No known infections, puter freezes for every other second daily, fine after reboot

Q: No known infections, puter freezes for every other second daily, fine after reboot

Hello, the puter is my
DELL laptop Latitude D600, W2K SP4,
Intel Pentium M 1,4 GHz

It used to be my work laptop, but I saved it from beeing discarded. I no longer have access to the company network, but the company domain has still stayed as the login domain.

My problem is that once or twice a day the computer freezes so that everything lags very much. Mouse becomes erradic and moves for a second then freezes for a second, moves and so on. You can move it carefully and it will respond after the freeze to the movements You made during the freeze time. Difficult and frustrating. Same with keyboard. It will be fine after a reboot but even getting the reboot is frustrating because either by mouse or by CTRL-ALT-DEL the restart is a pain to achieve because of poor response.

I dont know what is hogging the system resources. I cannot find anything in the task manager information and I have no know security issues or threats.

I use AVIRA and ZoneAlarm free versions and I have CCleaner 1.36.430 running /auto with startup

Preferred Solution: No known infections, puter freezes for every other second daily, fine after reboot

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi there

Few days ago, was experiencing slow downs, and occasional lock ups. I scanned with my anti malware and anti virus. Anti virus spat out 2 trojans and anti malware program spat out 50 (half of which was only browser cookies). Just posting a HJT log to make sure that its clean. Thanks!

Running Vista home premium. Problem when the system locks up or is otherwise disabled, such as in a power outage, etc. In other words, when it is turned off in any way other than the standard system shut down button.

When this happens I cannot get it to reboot. Even if I unplug all power sources for 20-30 minutes and then re-establish, it will not reboot. It just simply does nothing at all--exactly like there is no electrical power to the machine. However the monitor will come on when power is re-established and then indicate no input signal and go to sleep, as it should.

Several hours later it still responds as if no power--I have tried as much as 8 hours later and nothing. However, wait until the next day and the scumbag will boot up perfectly as if nothing had happened.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi,
Have an office computer which bluescreens daily after a certain period of time, but then is fine for the rest of the working day.

BSOD shows CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION,
and bluescreenview shows plenty of ntoskrnl.exe+ 14e2a0

Any thoughts? I'm sure its relating to a driver but I have no idea how to go about finding out which one is most likely at fault.
Is there a website I can dump one of the DM log files into and have it bring up a list of outdated drivers?

Thanks for any help!

A:Daily BSOD after 1 hour, then fine for rest of day

Using more then 1 AV protection causes several problems, including performance problems, accessibility problems (errors when accessing a file for example) and possible bluescreens.

Remove either Avast or Bitdefender, I would suggest to remove Avast as Avast causes a lot of crashes.

Hey all. I've often used the information on this forum to solve problems by myself, but I'm stumped this time.

I started having frequent BSODs about the middle of the past week. After popping open the case, I noticed the fan on my graphics card wasn't spinning - probably the fan burned out, or possibly there were too many programs trying to control it at once (I noticed several different "performance enhancing programs" that had been automatically installed when I installed all the various hardware on my computer had fan control options). Anyway, two days ago I pulled that out and am now just running on the internal graphics card on the motherboard. Stability seems to have improved, except that these past two days I've had one BSOD per day about ten minutes after startup, followed by no BSODs for the rest of the day - and I tend to use my computer constantly from about 9 a.m. to midnight. Yesterday, after that first BSOD, I used the computer to edit multiple documents with five to ten browser windows open, watch a DVD, and play Team Fortress 2 for several hours with no problem. Then I wake up, turn on the computer, get the BSOD after ten minutes, and here we are again.

I've run the windows file integrity checker and the memory integrity checker and both came up clean.

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm using a homemade system, a year and a half old.

Also, System Restore doesn't seem to be working. When I try to restore, it shows a screen that says something along the lines of 'System Restore is initializing' and the mouse pointer turns into the blue spinning wheel and keeps spinning, but nothing happens and I can't even move the mouse.

About 10 days ago, MSE started finding multiple trojan infections on a daily basis. This required me to run full scans at least every day. I have tried everything I can think of and can't stop the ongoing infections.

List of trojans as follows:
Trojan:Win32/Yakad.A!plock
Trojan:Win32/Gheugent.A!plock
Backdoor:Win32/Simda.AT
VirTool:Win32/CeeInject.gen!KK
Trojan:Win32/Simda.S
VirTool:Win32/VBInject.gen!LE
Trojan:Win32/Miuref.F
Trojan:Win32/Anaki.A!plock
Trojan:Win32/Miuref.C
PWS:Win32/Zbot.gen!plock
Backdoor:Win32/Simda

I found that many of these infections corresponded to files located in the C:/ProgramData\Microsoft\Secure\Icons\Temp folder and were still there after MSE had "Cleaned and Removed" the infections.

I started deleting these files but that has had no effect on the number of new infections. I am at wits end and would really appreciate some guidance.

Thanks for reading this post!

I began having trouble with sound when playing UT, but recently the trouble has affected all sound apps.

SYMPTOM:
Sound quits, but any app using the sound continues to run without sound. At this point everything is functioning, but without sound. When I close the app, however, my system is frozen. Ctrl-Alt-Del gets no response and I have to shut down manually. As I said, this used to affect only 3D games, but is now happening with alarming regularity when playing wav, mp3, or wma files.

WHAT I'VE DONE:
Reinstalled latest soundcard drivers

Reinstalled soundcard via add new hardware

Upgraded DirectX to v. 7.1

Reinstalled Windows 98se (no reformatting)

Attempted to change soundcard's DMA settings via System Resources, but unable to make these changes.

Startup with only Systray and Explorer

MY SPECS:
P3 733mHZ
W98se
128mg ram
ATI Rage Fury Pro 32mg Video
Yamaha DS-XG Soundcard

The video and sound cards share IRQ 5, along with the ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering. I think I want the cards to shore the IRQ, but what about this other?
Any Ideas?

Hello!!! Okay, a few days ago, I went to the windows update page, and I downloaded and installed all of the newest updates for my computer. Ever since then, my computer has been having like these little brain freezes every 7-10 minutes. I don't know how else to explain it. Like...I'll just be sitting here, just typing an email, or surfing ebay, and my computer will freeze for about 15 seconds. My mouse turns into an hourglass, and I can still move it, but I can't click on anything. And then, after about 15 seconds, it goes back to normal. It's REALLY annoying, but I can't make it go away. I've run scandisk, but nothing comes up. I didn't know if Hijack This would help, but it's worked for me in the past, so I figured it couldn't hurt! Having trouble with Windows 7 rebooting on a daily basis. Once acknowleding the reboot, I could actually get another reboot. I have never seen the machine do the actuall reboot while working at it. My first instinct is to take the System disc and reformat and start over again. Could there be a simple fix to the issue without a reformat?

A:Windows 7 Daily Reboot

Rather than reinstalling the OS it is generally better to find the cause of the problem. Spontaneous reboots are often caused by power issues or overheating. Be sure that all fans are operating, not clogged with dust, and external vents are not blocked. OEM computers frequently have weak and unreliable PSUs and this is a common cause of such problems.

Knowing what hardware you have would help.

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

Over the past several weeks I've been trying to figure out why my computer freezes daily at random times. When frozen the mouse and keyboard won't respond (even toggling num lock does nothing,) and if I have music running it repeats the same note that was last played. Sometimes it lasts a few seconds, and sometimes it doesn't recover so I have to force reboot the computer. If it does recover I start noticing issues with the mouse; mainly it's icon is wrong or just a pixelated mess of yellow, red, and green. This lasts until I restart the computer, then it's like nothing happened until it freezes again.

This freezing happens most often when the computer is under a light load, like when having music running and browsing firefox. I have had no issues while playing a game, however.

Computer specs:

Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 768MB Video Card
4 GB Dual Channel Patriot RAM
2 Seagate Hard drives (466 GB and 149 GB)
Corsair GS600 power supply

What I have done in an attempt to fix it:
ran a memory tester and found no problems
updated the graphics driver to the most current stable version
defragmented the hard drives
ran CCleaner to clean the registry (after the freezing began)

I stress tested the CPU, and it can run like that for extended periods of time without problems. However the power supply runs just above 11 volts when it's supposed to run at 12, and one of the hard drive plugs i... Read more

I have a 5 year old Micron Millennia running Windows98 (I know -- sounds pretty pathetic).

In the last week or so the screen will be grayed out (you can see everything, but it's very hard to see) on boot. If you reboot it several times, the screen will eventually come back and be fine.

I tried just not powering it down -- and that works fairly well, except the screen went dim while the computer was up and running, one time. We tried replacing the video card -- got a new GeForce NVidea 6200 (which is compatible with Windows98) and everything was fine -- for a while, then the problem cropped up again.

What to do? The monitor appears to be working okay otherwise. We tried plugging in a different monitor and the problem was just the same.

Thank-you for any help or advice that you can give.

as per usual, it is a problem that has seen me look for help and find this forum.

I have installed windows 7 on a laptop that is a few years old (fujitsu amilo v2035pro).
I thought all was fine, i used the xp gfx driver for the video which is a via s3g unichrome igp pro.
It asked for a reboot, which i did and the video came back great at 1280x800.

Trouble is, everytime i reboot the resolution goes back to 640x480 and i cant change it. I have to unistall the device, reboot, reinstall and it is fine again.

Talk about frustrating. When installed the machine works great but why the resetting of the resolution? It makes no sense.

Any help seriously appreciated as i am going insane

A:Cant change resolution after reboot, fine before!

I'm not sure why you would install a video driver meant for XP on a Windows 7 system, or even how you managed to do this. Did 7 not install a driver by itself?

Good day All,

To cut a long story short, I had a virus/s which Bleeping Computers was helping me with when suddenly my computer was wiped.
I used the recovery disc and did a re-install. Everything fine until I restart the machine and I get a message saying that a file is corrupt or missing. The file in question is:-

Windowsroot>system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I have reinstalled three times and get the same problem each time I restart the computer.
As usual, all and any help appreciated.
George.

My PC may have had malware/virus/spyware in the past so that may have been the reason for the significant reduction in speed. Refer to this thread for background info: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic149117.html

However, the assister presumed my slow PC wasn't due to the cause of having malware because the logfiles were clean in the end. Nevertheless, every time I start up the computer it can take up to 5 minutes for me to begin opening new programs like IE, but then I would have to wait for maybe up to 4 minutes until the program finishes opening up and wait a little while more to be able to click the address bar and start typing. Generally, before I may be able to start a new program, the computer freezes for a little while.

I've recently deleted all the unnecessary documents, music, pictures to free up more space and manually deleted infected-SmartShopper files (see thread) but the PC has gotten even slower. If my PC has a capacity of 111GB and 68.8G of free space, my computer shouldn't be running too slow. I have SP3, should I delete some Windows XP updates, if so, which?

Also, the PC freezes up every time during a HiJackThis scan so it's pretty impossible to provide a logfile.

Hello, I regularly look on this site for issues and 9/10 someone has already found a solution to the issue I am having but this one seems to be more machine specific so I was hoping that someone out there could give me a hand.

Basically when I switch my computer on it works perfectly fine for about 10-15 minutes before freezing, I have no choice but to switch the machine off and for the rest of the day it works perfectly fine. However recently I have been getting blue screens rather frequently, particularly when browsing YouTube. It could be any random video and suddenly my browser (Firefox) freezes for 2-3 seconds before the YT video flashes green and refuses to go back to normal. Audio is still playing by the way.

A few seconds after that (if I don't close Firefox immediately most of the time) the computer completely crashes and goes to a bluescreen.

I read in other places on the forum to try using something called BlueScreenView which I did and three items came up red: dxgmms1.sys USBPORT.SYS and watchdog.sys

If you could help me with anything I would be incredibly grateful, I use this machine quite a lot and would be quite upset if I had to replace it.

I would also like to add that I'm not massively computer savvy so if you could be patient with me I would appreciate it greatly, thank you for any assistance.

Dave

Update your video card drivers. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. Software license management, IT asset management, cyber security audits, and more. - Belarc Advisor
SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala - System Information for Windows

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them back:

How To Roll Back a Driver in Windows 7

Or if you installed the latest Nvidia drivers, uninstall them and install the older ones that worked. Nvidia keeps an archive of older drivers. I don't know if ATI does. I don't see anything offhand but someone else who has an ATI card might know.

Hi,My laptop will suddenly freeze halfway through usage and will not respond to any commands input from the keyboard or mouse. This problem has persisted almost daily for one month already. I have to do a hard reboot of the laptop by pressing on the power button until it shuts down. Then I can press the power button again to restart the laptop and it will restart back to normal as if nothing has happened. The freezing will occur again the next day.Hardware diagnostics showed no problems. This laptop is not even 6 months old. Please advise.  Thanks. Ken

Hey! I'm the happy owner of a normally well-working PC. But since, I don't remember when, (Probably more than one year) I've getting BSOD and Freezes random, I'll explain more detailed.

For a long period, I've been getting one freeze once a day, everyday. It usually happen after a short while after I've turned on the PC and logged into my account. (It doesn't happen if I just let the PC do nothing, but if I transfer, or anything it will most likely happen within 5-30 min) If I press ALT+CTRL+DELETE a blue screen will pop up and say "Preparing security options, please wait" (Or something like that, I'll upload picture in the following days, when I find my camera) I've no idea what is causing this issue, but I've been having it for almost a year. Until now I've been dealing with it, but it's been too annoying.

Now for the blue screen.

Blue screen has been more of a mystery it comes once everyday, for a month, and then nothing the next month, and keeps on like that. I've fixed other peoples BSOD, (Which was pretty easy) but I can't seem to get of rid of this one. It creates no DMP file, and doesn't give me a driver name. I've no photo of my BSOD, but I've written it all down, and I'll upload the photo later with the freeze. I'll give you the entire summary here. (I've tried to update my drivers, and the most common stuff.)

Hi

For the last months (4,or 5 not sure exactly how many) I have had my PC freezing and rebooting itself at random times, regardless of what I was doing (sometimes it even froze while it was idle)

Anyway, I didn't mind just letting it restart on its own or me restarting it when it freezes but lately the issue has become a bit more serious when it wouldn't even log in to Windows anymore. Sometimes I would just restart the PC and then it would get stuck on the loading Windows screen (that dark screen with the WindowsXP logo and loading bar, if you know what I mean).

What's more, over the last couple of weeks I have been always asked to click on my user account icon before I could log in to Windows. While this is not something to whine about, it surely is something misplaced since I have never set anything to ask me for logging in by clicking on my user account icon. There definitely must be an application or something that changed the settings or something in the configuration of my OS.

And speaking of applications there is a file called winappp.exe that I have googled for some info and it seems like a spyware or something that bothers lots of folks but that no one knows how to get rid of. I use AVG as antivirus and my antivirus won't even detect it. I can see this winappp.exe file clearly in the "Documents and Settings>John>Application Data" folder and I could easily remove it but I don't know if this is recommended or of any use. T... Computer ran fine in the am. Shut down and restarted in the pm. Boot to windows was no slower than normal. When you click on any executable, program takes forever to load. For example, after clicking Outlook 2007, about 10 minutes later I can actually see my emails. Move the mouse to click and open an email, cursor disappears then reappears about 50 seconds later. Maybe 5-7 minutes later, the email message will open. The same scenario occurs for Task Manager, Windows Explorer, Firefox, etc.

Machine: HP Pavilion dv5000 (laptop), AMD Turion 1.79GHz, RAM 2GB.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (All current updates installed)

In Safe Mode, machine seems to be operating at normal speed. Reboot to normal Windows, it's still ridiculously slow.

From Safe Mode, ran Webroot, Spybot, and Malwarebytes. Only thing found was some cookies.

Earlier today, managed to run a few things from normal Windows.
Using BitDefender 2010; defrag accomplished, registry cleaner, cleaned cookies/temp files and virus scan (none found).

CHKDSK and rebooted. No disk problems found. Currently running WD Disk Utility.

Last program installed (5 days ago): Updated iTunes program

Ran msconfig and turned off any unneeded start-up programs.

Installed the CPU Speed gadget and noticed the CPU going to 100% on several occasions.

No improvements made so far.

A:WIN7. Fine before reboot. Now extremely slow.

First, try this to see if Task Manager can identify the hog:

Task Manager:
Also, you can monitor the system for excessive resource consumption. To do this, open up Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then select the Processes tab.
Then select the "Show processes from all users" button (in the lower left)
Then select the View menu item, then select "Select columns"
In the Select columns window, place checkmarks next to I/O Reads and I/O Other.
Click OK to accept the changes.
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see the most of the columns.
Wait for the system to freeze.
Look at all of the columns to see if there's anything that looks excessively high - if so, let us know the Image name of the process.
FWIW - System Idle Process is supposed to have high CPU readings - anything else with high CPU readings is an issue.

If that doesn't work, we can try XPerf (more info here: http://www.carrona.org/xperf.html ).

That would typically indicate a hardware issue. If there are multiple sticks of RAM present, try only one at a time. You may also want to try a different video card if possible, or test the current video card in another system.

Specs:
- PC Chips A15G mother board, BIOS just flashed with the 2008/08/12 update
- 2x Western Digital WD10EADS 1TB hard drives set up as a RAID 1
- Fresh install of Windows XP using the F6 function to install the RAID drivers, updated to Service Pack 3
(I can provide more system information if it will help)

I just upgraded my home-built desktop from a single 80G IDE hard drive to a RAID 1 with dual 1TB SATA drives with a fresh install of XP using the F6 option and installing the required RAID drivers. The system runs great but it would not power down after shutting XP down. After flashing the BIOS with the 2008/08/12 update, things get weirder.

The machine still doesn't power down when I shut down XP, but will shut down if I hold the power button for 3 seconds or so. However, if I press the Reset button on the front of the case the machine shuts down instantly, but does not reboot. When I select "Restart" from the shut down menu, the machine shuts down instead of rebooting. Even further, if I go into the BIOS menu then exit, the machine shuts down instead of rebooting.

The XP install is new this weekend so if I need to do something major it isn't a big deal. Is there some sort of BIOS setting that I have wrong or is something corrupt? The machine ran completely normally with the 80G IDE drive.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jimal

A:Computer works fine, but will not reboot when requested

This appears to be a RAID issue, try disabling RAID and pulling one of your hard drives see if that changes anything.

Hey, first of all I want to re-introduce myself. I've earlier had problems with this pc (actually the same as I have now) And you can read about it on the old thread. Random BSOD and freezes daily.

I would very much like you to read this thoroughly due to the problem is quite unique.

To enlighten about the problem, I will start from the very beginning.
Since as long as I can remember having this pc, there has been some issues on it. I basically put these issues into 3 different categories. The first is freezes, the second is random BSODs and the third is the dump/dmp files.

1) First issue, the freezes. This happen one time, after the PC is turned on, no more, no less. but it will happen at least one time. The thing that does seem to trigger it, is using the pc, on a level just above idle. If I e.g. start my pc, log on, and try to install something, it would instantly happen. Here it how it goes. when it freezes, I can't do anything but move my mouse, nothing will work, only my music played in Windows media player keeps on, until it hit the next song, then it stop. If I try to press ALT+CTRL+DELETE what happens may vary, but the most common is it turns over to a blue screen saying "Preparing security options" it might also just turn black, where after it show the message that it could not go to security menu, where after I press OK and the pc run normally until I turn it off, or it crashes by a BSOD. I suspect this to be linked to my SSD, and the BSODs that ha... Read more

Hi,

Ever since i got my laptop ive been plagued by blue screen freezes often and seemingly randomly. doesn't matter what i am doing. Several times a day it happens. I used to get kernel inpage errors and ive been trying to update all drivers and a few solutions i found online. Finally reduced it to pretty much daily freezes and mostly the correlating event is
CRITICAL PROCESS DIED
Kernel-PnP event id 219 The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ACPI\INT3400\2&daba3ff&1. -> what is this exactly? and why?
My searches so far show the driver for that error is a Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control Driver. There is no 9550 windows 10 driver available for it. Any suggestions?
Can anyone please help? is this a hardware issue?
i updated to new BIOS 01.02, have the latest Dell drivers for everything.

Anytime I do a reboot the system hangs with a black screen right before the Windows XP splash screen. No blinking curser on the screen and no hard drive activity but all of the other lights on the computer are on. I can turn the computer off and back on and it boots up fine. It doesn't even hesitate at the point where it hangs during a reboot.

I recently had to visit the Am I infected? What do I do? forum to get rid of a google redirect problem but this was happening before that. It is just starting to irritate me because I went through the process of updating everything and I can't just do a reboot during the updates anymore.

I downloaded the hard drive diagnostics check from western digital and the drive checks out fine. I'm not familiar with any of the utilities mentioned in the pinned posts so I'm afraid to run them without help and specific directions.

Operating system is Windows XP Professional (64-bit) Service Pack 2.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jo Ann

I wonder if someone in the forum can help me with an intermittent problem I'm experiencing with my Windows 7 / Linux Mint machine. This is been going on for approximately 4 to 6 weeks I can't relate it to the installation of any updates from Microsoft, or any new software installations, because there haven't been any new programs added. I have most of the MS Hotfixes but most of the ones pertaining to Win 10 I have removed or blocked with GRC "Never 10"

The problem starts with the monitor flickering momentarily, it then goes to a black screen with the message "no signal found." Initially I thought this was coming from the operating system but in fact that message is being generated by the ViewSonic monitor. Without doing anything else, letting the machine continue to run, I plug in a spare monitor into one of the two available graphic ports I get the same result, a black screen. If I reboot the machine of course I get a message saying that Windows wasn't shut down properly, which makes sense because I can't see the screen. Plugging in the spare monitor eliminates the monitor being the problem and the DVI cable since it's a different cable.

Inside the box, all seven of the cooling fans are clean and operating. I've taken out the Nvidia 8800 GTS graphics card, cleaned out the PCI slot that it occupies as well as the power input cable from the power supply. Initially I thought I had solved the problem but yesterday without warning, the monitor flic... Read more
