Frozen Video Calls in Skype

Q: Frozen Video Calls in Skype

Hi all,

I been using Skype for a long time now, but have only recently started using the video call feature. I find it quite useful. The problem is that the video freezes after a minute or two when I make video calls. I then have to restart to unfreeze it. I can be a hassle. The video freezes on both sides of the video call. One minute my video would freeze then the other side freezes as well. The audio is fine. There is nothing wrong with my webcam.

I have a Microsoft Lifecam VX 1000. Windows XP Professional. Service Pack 3.
I have version of Skype

How can I make video calls that don't freeze?

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Frozen Video Calls in Skype

My experience has been that if I have too many extra's turned on the camera, it might freeze. I have a Logitech cam, and it has a feature called Low-light boost that sometimes has given me problems. (also accessed through Skype at Tools>Options>Video Settings. Then click on the button that says Webcam settings>Advanced Tab).

Other possibilities:
*Double check your camera driver for the latest version.
*Bad internet connection (double check firewalls, anti-virus etc.)
*Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX
*Make sure the camera application software is running at the same time as Skype.

Good luck, hope this helps.

The latest beta of Skype 5.0 for Windows introduces the new group vid-chat feature, with no word on when Mac users will get the same as yet.
"The second beta of Skype 5.0 brings a number of changes both outside and in ? most importantly, you can now make group video calls with up to 10 people," the company announced on its website.

I have been waiting for this feature. Video conferencing for free should attract a healthy following from many corporations.

Update: It's not free.

During audio calls, the person I am speaking with says that they can hear all audio created by my computer. This includes their own voice, audio from videos I might play, any movie we're watching, etc. Typically, I can hear their computer's audio as well. This happens when using Skype, Facebook Messenger, etc.

What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop running Win7 at work, and when I use SKYPE with my Logitech USB headset I have to quit and restart the program after each call in order to hear any sound through my headset. My clients can hear me, apparently, but I cannot hear them.

Same with incoming calls, I cannot hear them unless I quit and restart SKYPE in between each one.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SKYPE, I have tried playing with the sound settings. My headset is set as the default everywhere.

Please help!

Hello everyone.
I tried this post on the Skype forums, but the forum feels a little dead, so I figured iŽd try my luck here instead:

I have a little question I was hoping you could help me out with.
I live waaaay out in the fields of Denmark, and my cellphone reception is non existing.
I constantly get "No Service" on my Iphone, but then I got an idea!
Would it be possible to forward my Iphone to my skype, so whenever someone cannot get through to my phone, they will get directed to my skype account and I will be able to pick up my phone there?
If that is possible, is there a way I can pay for something like "Pay as you go" kinda plan? I dont call a lot so I figured that would be the best plan for me.

Thanks in advance <3

A:Forward calls to Skype

Your phone company would need to forward the calls from your cell phone number to the Skype number. This may be more of what you are interested in: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/features/allfeatures/online-number/

I've been using Skype for quite a while now and recently whenever I use it, the person on the other line is always breaking up like it'll cut off for a good 5 seconds and then the audio will just continue as usual. I'm not sure if it's the Internet connection or the device I'm using (both ipad mini and phone have the same problem tbh, dont use a laptop to skype) but I did get a new router about 20 days ago. Do i have to change some settings ? What do I do ? Ps. I'm really not good with technology. Help is much appreciated <3

A:Skype calls keep breaking up ?

You could start here for a VoIP simulation test.

Choose where you are then choose (lower right) VoIP, then start when it fires up.

You want very low jitter and hopefully ZERO packet loss. For MOS anything above 4 should be good.

Might have to open some ports in your router.

Just moved to my company staff house where I've been using skype on a wifi router BT broadband without problems for several days.
It's now been a week that I can't have a decent connection with skype: the calls are dropping all the time, every minute the call ends.
Could this depend on how many people are connected and downloading?
Where do I start troubleshooting?

Recently (or so I've noticed), Skype has been using up nearly all my bandwidth during calls. When I'm in a call, web pages take forever to load and a quick email sync takes 3 minutes instead of 3 seconds. The quality of the Skype call itself isn't too good, either.

Here are some Speedtest.net results from during and after a call:

Before and after:
Ping: 43ms
Down: 12.90Mbps
Up: 1.08Mbps

During the call:
Ping: 278ms
Down: 0.58Mbps
Up: 0.05Mbps

Why is Skype using up so much bandwidth during calls? Anyone got any idea?

A:Skype hogging bandwidth during calls

Probably not Skype itself. What version are you running? Often a driver will become corrupt requiring frequent data re-sends causing the bottleneck.

Latency is often caused by a driver, run this (free) to check. DPC Latency Checker

If you have the current version I might try a Skype re-install

I have been having poor quality calls with Skype and I see that while Skype may be running around 30-50%, DPC is quite high too. Total CPU usage is just below 100%. My CPU is a P4 Celeron 1.8 GHZ and I have high speed internet.I have ran malware scans and everything is fine. I also looked at my HIJACK log and that is fine too. The high DPC and CPU usage is only apparent when running internet telephone or Skype type software. I have run Skype with only essential services only and it didn't make much of a difference.Any ideas/suggestions?ThanksModerator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

If you are not a trained HJT log evaluator it would be very easy to dismiss a malware entry and a legit proccess. If you have not done so, I would recommend you have one of our HJT Team members take a look at your HJT log.

This has been happening alot since skype 5.8. When I get into a call alone with somebody sometimes my skype goes offline for them for about 15 seconds and the call ends for me but the call for them stays open and says "There is a problem with this call". This is also random, sometimes i could be in a call for 5 hours with somebody and then the call will just end. When this happens my friend told me it shows my skype going offline when clearly im still online, I have to either call them back or wait afew minutes for the call to reconnect. My internet connection is fine/fast, I have no problems with my internet. Sometimes when I'm online It shows me offline to all of my friends on my contacts. Wiretapping Skype calls: virus eavesdrops on VoIP.

Some computer viruses have a crude but scary ability to spy on people by logging every keystroke they type. Now hackers and potentially law enforcement have another weapon: a virus that can eavesdrop on voice conversations that go over computers instead of a regular phone line.

Trojan Attacks Skype on Windows - eSecurity Planet"What we're looking at is something that could be considered the first 'wiretap Trojan,'" Symantec's Intel Security Team wrote in a blog post. Symantec's analysis found that the Trojan, which it dubbed "Trojan.Peskyspy," can record audio on a computer such as Skype calls, store the file locally as an encrypted mp3 and then relay it back to the hacker. Trojan.Peskyspy is designed to beat Skype's encryption, Symantec found. "Since the Trojan listens to the data coming to and from the audio devices, it gathers the audio independently of any application-specific protocols or encryption applied by Skype when it passes voice data at the network level," the company said. The virus can attack the Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 operating systemsMore if you click the link.

Hi all

just when I decided to invest in a smart TV and looking forward to using Skype to video call - Microsoft in its wisdom has decided to pull the support for the app and quick as a flash Samsung - the maker of the TV I was going to buy say it will no longer be available on their new smart tvs from June this year (2016). So now I'm totally confused as to what is a next best option to do video calls on a TV.

I know there will be other options and ways round this but I want the next best quality option without too much fuss when I want to use it. Would it be better to go back to HD and link the TV to a pc either via cable or wirelessly - can I use Chrome cast. Whatever I do it needs to be easy to use on a daily basis - I want to use this to teach online. In particular, does anyone have experience of using Google talk on a TV ??? please share
I realise I may have to get another monitor for my pc now to make this happen but I want to persevere with having a TV option too. ANY help and advice welcome but please use plain speak in any replies, thanks in advance.

I'm trying to use the latest version on Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8089.726) to make video calls. I have a working webcam and microphone setup already. The problem is that the option to start a video call is faded out, therefore meaning I can't click on it. All the different ways to start a video call are faded out, which means I can't click on it. All the setting under "Tools" -> "Set Up Audio and Video" are correct. I am running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. I have a Microsoft Lifecam VX 1000 (includes microphone) that is working perfectly fine.

What can I do in order to get video calls in Windows Live Messenger?

I'm wondering if just an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium would solve the problem with choppy and frozen video on my PC from video I imported from my new Nikon 3100 digital SLR. Nikon said, "This happens whenever the computer does not have the proper drivers to playback high definition videos". And they said a fast processor and a lot of installed memory- but even that may not be enough because there are "...a lot of factors that determine system performance". Or would it be better to buy a new computer. Thanks, David in Milwaukee

A:coppy and frozen video on my PC

I just read your comuter specs and see that you have 1GB Ram. You cannot expect very good perfomance with 1GB of Ram. Most of that is needed just to run Vista. With Home Basic, you are using half your Memory just for the OS.
You may want to test to see if your computer is powerful enough for Seven.
Dont forget, this test will show if you have the minimum requirments and not if your software will run well.

My sister is running Windows XP Home. She likes to watch the eagles at Norfolk (www.wvec.com). She has a total of about 10 different nature streams that she watches and all of the others, including one from this same site, work fine. But this one (her favorite, of course), appears to be frozen at a frame from last Friday (3/30, date/time stamp at bottom of frame). I'm stumped on how this one can malfunction while all her others work. This one works for all her friends and for me, as well, so it's not the site. We've tried clearing temp internet files and cookies. Ideas?

A:One frozen video stream

Try a Scandisk and Defrag on her system AFTER deleting the temporary files as has been previously done. It seems likely there is a "corrupted" image file trapped within Internet Explorer or whatever program is used to view the streaming video.

Also, when she goes to the website she can try the <Shift> key + <Reload> button in the browser to "force" the reloading of page content regardless of previously cached site / page data.

Let us know if this resolves the issue.

My sister and I recently installed Logitech QuickCam S550 and downloaded Skype. We are able to hear each other but a Video Call fails. something about camera in use. We see the black screen with rotating circle which quickly disappears.jLogitech help did not solve the problem just a repitition of a help instruction. We both have Vista Home Premium Sp1. Has anyone solved a similar problem. We would appreciate a solution. Thanks, GordonHS

A:Skype no video

To answer my own question; We started the Logitech Webcam first. We should have started the Skype program and clicked "Start Video". Now, all is well. GordonHS

Hello All:

I am using the latest version of skype and when trying to use video, I get the error that says it can't start the video renderer...

I see the cam light go on as if it is trying to work, but skype does not see it. If I use the video calling feature in GMAIL, it works perfect...skype is the only one who can't.

I am using version 9.0c of DIRECTX onb my system..

Any ideas on how to correct this?
