Q: USB C Thunderbolt Dock Issue, asking for firmware update

Hi, i have a T470 that connects to a UCB C Lenvo thunderbolt dock, occasinly it requires the firmware to be updated (i done this last month) however it is erroring again saying i need to conncact my pc manufacturer for new firmware, i have just checked and there is no new firmware on the lneovo website, i installed all the latested packages that were there, does nayone know where i can get the new firmware and if there is any workaround? The dock is not showing as connected in the dock software window, however the dock light goes from yellow to white when i polug it into the laptop, so it does see the connection they just cant talk to each other. I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Dear all, having just updated my the firmware of my Ultra Dock (40AJ0135EU) via Lenovo Vantage to V5.0.6.1, there is now something truly wrong with the power supply; on startup, I am greeted by the famous "low wattage" screen and when using windows, the battery is slowly drained (Lenovo Vantage claims that a 25 W USB-C adapter would be connected instead of the 135 W one). The issue never occurred prior to the firmware update and consistently shows up for any other power cable (trying several ones, including 90 W). So while the "low wattage" screen is annoying, the more severe issue is the constantly drained battery which makes using the dock basically impossible over time. Any ideas? I did not find a way to undo the firmware update - or is the recommendation to wait and hope for yet-another firmware update that (may) solve the issue? Maybe someone has a similar issue and a better / working solution Thx!

 By chance did airplane power mode get turned on? The only way I know to check this is in the Lenovo "Vantage" tool

I am using a T480 with the TB3 dock and 2 external monitors.My problem is my screens go black for a couple of seconds every x amount of time. I've updatad all drivers found under the Display and Video graphics section Drivers T480I remember when updating to Intel Thunderbolt Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad T480, T480s, X1 Carbon Gen 6 - 1.41.565.0I received the following screen:(I did get 2 Thunderbolt SW apps in my start menu and uninstalled the one which was visible via add/remove programs) These updates did not resolve my monitor issue.I later on noticed there is a new TB3 Dock FWWhen I wanted to make the update I got the message the TB SW had to be above 17.4.77.400. (the version insalled and active was 1.41.565.0) I reinstalled TB SW 17.4.78.500 and performed the TB3 dock FW upgrade. Now I am in the situation I do not have a Thunderbolt SW application to allow/select TB devices to connect.V1.41.565.0 seems to be a new DCH driver. reverting back to the legacy driver 17.4.78.500 is not somethig I should have done.It seems the DCH driver came with it's own Thunderbolt SW application, which is no longer available. Is there a procedure to completly reinstall the DCH driver including the Thunderbold SW or revert back to the legacy driver with Thunderbold SW (which now states the application is not in use anymore) Thanks!

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.

Hello,the thunderbolt on my X380 Yoga completely stopped working. As I try to connect a P27h for instance, the laptop charges but does not recognize the monitor or USB Hub.I installed every update available on system update and tried to update the Thunderbolt Software and Firmware. The software installed fine but upon updating the firmware the following promt appears:    When I check the version inside the Thunderbold software, this is what shows up:    I am running Windows 10 Home 1803. Any idea why this is not working? Is my thunderbolt controller not working properly?Thanks

There is an issue with the update for the tunderbolt firmware when updating through the system update utility. This is a known issue that the Engineering department has been working on. The only known resolution to this issue so far has been to replace the system board. Im sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. If the device is still under warranty i would speak with the support center to have a tech install a new board.

I just got my X1 Extreme yesterday. I updated the BIOS to 1.15 and also updated other drivers. The one pending thing is the Thunderbolt firmware update utility. The first pop-up says "do not connect any Thunderbolt device", but then a second pop-up right before the firmware update says "connect at least one Thunderbolt device. I cancelled the update for now due to the conflicting pop-up messages. Note - I do not have any Thunderbolt devices connected to my X1E laptop. Can I upgrade Thunderbolt firmware safely with no Thunderbolt devices connected, or?

I note a new P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ) Thunderbolt Firmware update has just been posted on the support drivers page (24 Jul 2018) which is great news, but it's release note refers to Thunderbolt driver / software version 17.3.74.400. The Thunderbolt driver software currently available on the P51 20HH, 20HJ support drivers page is version 17.1.64.250, which is quite old. Please would you also put the latest Thunderbolt Software on this support drivers page. BTW: The P51 (models 20MM, 20MN) support drivers page does has the latest Thunderbolt Software (17.3.74.400), so I assume this could be installed on a P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ), as all models use the same Thunderbolt controller - ID 15D9 (Intel JHL6340).

Hello, I am trying to use a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (StarTech brand) to connect my P50 to a Resident Audio T4 Thunderbolt audio interface. The device is briefly detected and then disappears. I have been doing some research to resolve this issue and a few users have said that updating thier Thunderbolt NVM to 18 add compatibility with the adapter.  Would it be possible to get an upgrade from the current NVM16 to NVM18? Current P50 firmware (NVM16) link here:http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50... I have already attempted to install the NVM18 firmware straight from Intel but it looks like the firmware is OEM specific. Thanks!

Anyone see this issue before? 

When I start the update, Thunderbolt doesn't appear in the device list. When the update starts, I briefly see the device in device manager, but then the update fails with this error. Then, Thunderbolt disappears from Device Manager. It's almost like Thunderbolt isn't turned on. I've tried disabling and reenabling in the BIOS to no avail.

Lenovo Vantage updated the T480s BIOS on 8/9. I immediately started getting a Thunderbolt error when starting Windows 10 64, which says to update the Thunderbolt firmware. I downloaded the current firmware from Lenovo (n22th06w) but I get the following error when trying to update: 0x20D SDK_INVALID_OPERATION_IN_SAFE_MODE What's the solution, Lenovo? Thanks.

For some reason the firmware for thunderbolt won't update on my p70. I've tried installing from a command prompt and using the installer. Either way it seems to work but the firmware version doesn't change. I have the hdmi cable connected to a monitor and have the thunderbolt software running. I've rebooted and tried again. I've booted into safe mode then rebooted and tried again. I've uninstalled the thunderbolt controller and tried again all to no avail. Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry to hear the Thunderbolt firmware installation was unsuccessful.
 
Lenovo is in the process of publishing a Service TIP that includes step-by-step instructions on how to check the Thunderbolt firmware version as well as a comprehensive guide to installing it.

So, brand new WD15 connected via USB-C to an Inspirion 7000 7278 laptop under Linux. No complaints with the display, ethernet or USB-ness. I did notice, however, that there is a newer firmware available. No biggie, I boot into windows and attempt to flash the update. And then I get the 'no thunderbolt dock found cannot flash...'
So, just how are we supposed to flash firmware on the dock if we don't have a thunderbolt connection?

Hello I hope someone might be able to help me. I have been trying to run the Thunderbolt Firmware Update Utility - 10 [64] - V.1.0.12.0-N23TF13W.  When I run the update I get the following error from the Thunderbolt firmware update utility: "Error: 0x224 SDK_NATIVE_MODE_MISMATCH Native/BIOS-Assisted mode mismatch between the controller and the image file". Below is the about from the Thunderbolt Software.   Thanks in advance for your guy's help!

I've read numerous other posts in this thread on ways to remedy the situation, but none are working for this system.The computer is running Windows 10 64bit 1903Thunderbolt Controller 15BFThe computer has the latest version of the Thunderbolt Software Installed (17.4.78.500)The firmware Version is currently the version previous to the last. 17 01 No matter what method I have tried, all fail.  I tried using Gigabyte updater and select the TBT.bin from Lenovo.  Doesn't work.Tried the administrator silent install, doesnt work.Uninstalling the device, uninstalling the software and reinstalling the software doesn't work. I'm just stuck and don't know what to do.  We have somewhere between 30-50 users reporting error messages from the Thunderbolt software but cannot get the firmware to update!  Hello Lenovo!

I have a T470S type 20HF running windows 10 (version 1703) that suddenly the Intel Thunderbolt Driver was updated and gives me the error "A Thunderbolt controller has experienced a problem and cannot connect to devices or other computers until new firmware is installed." The computer is connected through a usb-c cable to a dockin station which has two monitors connected through display port cables. I tried uninstalling the Intel Tunderbolt Software (ver. 17.4.78.500) and reinstalling it.I tried installing thinkpad thunderbolt 3 dock and usc-c dock driver v10017.I tried to install new firmware with the file N1WTH07W but it says "cannot find correct bin file" I still get the same error and cannot use the monitors connected to the docking station. Please help.

On my P52, I was prompted to install an update, Thunderbolt Firmware Utility - V1.0.12-N2CHF10W. However, it did not install, and I thought I saw something on here about people having issues with that. What's going on? Should I bother trying to install the update? Hi, Lenovo recently released a firmware update in the Lenovo Vantage app for the thunderbolt port on my 5th Gen X1 but the update seems to fail. Also tried the update by downloading it direct from Lenovo support website but getting the same error.  Any suggestions? Cheers

Today, I noticed that my USB-C docking station was no longer passing video from my T470 to my monitor. The monitor's HDMI cable is plugged into a docking station that is connected to my T470 via USB-C. It's been working fine for more than a year. All other connectivity via the docking station works (e.g., keyboard, mouse, ethernet, power). The docking station, including video, works just fine with another (non-Lenovo) PC. My first thought was to check Lenovo Vantage or the support website for Thunderbolt software and/or firmware updates. The most recent software is several months old and already installed on my machine. I can see that there's a relatively recent firmware update on the website, but it's specifically for Windows 10 1809 or older. I am running 1903. When trying to install that firmware update, I receive an error message (can't find suitable bin file). Vantage does not find any updates for me to install. I did see this post, which mentions HDMI output not working as a symptom (among others). However, it recommends the Thunderbolt software that has been installed for several months as well as the firmware that I cannot install. I have two questions:Is anyone else having problems with HDMI output via their T470 USB-C/Thunderbolt port?Is there any news on when there will be a new T470 Thunderbolt firmware update for Windows 10 versions newer than 1809?

Hello, I have purchased this week the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation dock. It work well until today. Yesterday (Feb 1st) evening I ran the Lenovo Vantage update which updated a bunch of things. Interesting ones: Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware Utility and BIOS update.Everything seem to work fine. This morning, first issue: after docking the PC, the Ethernet controller from the Thunderbolt dock didn't seem active. Other attached devices (monitors, mouse) were OK. My reflex: "restart" the dock, i.e. disconnect/reconnect the power cables. And then the dock ceased to work. It looks like if it's "bricked". The power led is on, but pushing the button (or long press) doesn't do anything. Relating to the updates from yesterday, I'd say that it's somehow related to them. And/or maybe an issue with the Thunderbolt software/drivers on PC? I tryed to uninstall/reinstall the Thunderbolt software on the PC. I find curious that:immediately after install, "Attached Thunderbolt Devices" shows "Port 1", "Port 2". By install I mean I open Lenovo Vantage and do a "Check for updates". It doesn't tell me that it had installed something, but it triggers the download and install in the background.Also I see in Device Manager: Device Manager/System/Thunderbolt Controllerafter restart, the list is empty, and in Device Manager there is no more "Thunderbold Controller"  Have you got any hints? Thanks in advance,Cristian.

I have a T470 20HD running Windows 10 Pro. Both the operating system and all Lenovo updates have been applied. Attached to thos is a Plugable-brand USB3 dual HDMI docking station that's been driving a pair of Dell SE2417HG(HDMI2) screens. Or did, until I did the Integrated Firmware of Thunderbolt Function 1.0.12.0-N1QTF16W update, at which point it now only drives a single screen. Windows sees both displays but now can't use one. I've tested both displays and they work fine otherwise, and if I unplug one display the dock will "fail over" to the other display without an issue.Is there a way to roll back this firmware update, or am I basically out of luck?

Hi all Recently got a Lenovo X1 Carbon (gen 6) and today got a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock, part number 40AC0135AU . I have two 1080p monitors plugged into the dock, however, when the laptop is plugged in via the single TB3 cable, the laptop's fans constantly spin-up loudly for about 10 seconds, then turn off. It repeats this constantly. I have run all Windows Updates (on 1903), Lenovo Vantage updates, and updated all firmware and drivers (that I know of), but it's still doing it. Has anyone got any experience with this, as I can't focus on work with the fans constantly interrupting I don't want to send the laptop and dock back, but it's not suiting my requirements as is. Appreciate any assistance!

Hi, I'm using the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock which came out with the P52 with my P1. So far it almost works fine when you boot up, but whenever I disconnect the machine from it after sending it to sleep or hibernation (like overnight)  and plug it in the other day the mouse and keyboard are not detected.I need to reboot the laptop to use them again with the dock. Thats really annoying. I thought it might be a driver issue but after updating to the newsest drivers from lenovo the problem persists. Has anybody a solution for that? Of course all other updates from Lenovo side are in  place..and I'm still using windows 10 1803.the mouse is a razer deathadder and the keyboard a Filco majestouch 2.Is that the typical glitch of a new product we always have to face as beta testers :-) Merci A

Sometimes the right one, after restart the left one a.s.o. - I changed cables from DP to HDMI and VGA: ever the same- Ive tried the second thunderbolt port of the docking station Once even the laptops display itself showed the wrong colours but it now works fine again.Im not able to get the tweo external monitors working together with the right colours. Neither including the Yogas display nor when Yogas display is turned off. What to do...? Best regards!

A:Yoga 370 & Thunderbolt 3 Dock monitor issue

Solution: Settings were changed in the Intel graphics settings AUTOMATICALLY for one display - one colour value has been set to a wrong value. As Im the only one working with this machine its kind of weird - Ive nevr been to the additional intel graphic settings before.

I Just bought TB15 and stated using it.
The problem, however, is that my XPS 13 becomes pretty hot when it is connected to the dock.
It becomes hot and operates fan even for normal light uses like web surfing or listening music.
Is it normal issue that all the user have or abnormal?

Additionally, when i connect intel realsense camera to TB15, all devices connected to TB15 is disabled and does not work. The laptop must be restarted to be operated normally.

Having issues with updating Thunderbolt firmware.  Now that the new version of the FW update tool is out, I've verified that I'm on the latest driver version, but when I run the detect tool, I receive the following error: Capturing Current NVM Version.....Capturing Current NVM Version failed!Error: 0x20B SDK_NO_CONTROLLER - If I run the update tool itself, I get a popup stating that no controller driver is found and I need to install the software and connect a Thunderbolt 3 device, then click OK to proceed or click Cancel to cancel the firmware installation.  The problem is that the only Thunderbolt 3 device I have is my docking station, which doesn't work, because of the "botched" firmware update tool that was released in early September.  Seems I'm in a catch-22 with no way out.

I was attempting to download the latest Thunderbolt 3 NVM firmware update for the ThinkPad P50 as a result of  following the guide here -> https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/SF16-T0051    However, when attempting to download the firmware update itself via the link provided within the text -> http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-P-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-P50... It results in a page not found error. I could have sworn this update was there a short time ago and I can see from other forum posts that it worked in the past. Is this just a glitch or is there a newer TB3 NVM update available? Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

Hi, I  got Yoga 920 with Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock that is connected to two 4k Samsung monitors. Just recently when I put Yoga 920 to sleep the monitors will switch off, but in 10-15 sec start looking for a signal.Basicaly screen goes to black (looks like monitor is off) and then in 10 sec it switches on a show blank screen with input name on (DisplayPort) and than it goes off and in 10 sec on with input name ..... this keeps cycling on and off. This is happening on both monitors. It's strange as it used to work fine untill recently (apropox 1 week ago). Im on latest bios with Yoga 920 and latest firmware for Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Lenovo Vantage says my system is up to date. The windows recently updated to Windows 10 (1709), not sure if that is related. Any help how to fix this issue?

Hi all, We bought about 10 HP X2 Elite 1012 G1 along with Thunderbolt Docking station. I setup the laptop then installed the drivers for Intel Management Engine and Thunderbolt dock. Updated the firmware for Intel chipset as well. Since we setup these laptops user complain about the dock not getting detected by laptop. No matter how many times they restart. I went through each laptop and observed the following issues: 1- When I open the Thunderbolt software, it shows multiple HP docks in the attached devices with cross sign (which means the device is disconnected). It seesm that the Thunderbolt software creates multiple entries of the same dock then fails to detect it 2- When the laptop goes to sleep mode, the dock gets disconnected and then it doesn't get detected at all, even after reboot.  So far the only fix is as below: (which worked 90% of the time) 1- Uninstall both Intel management Engine driver and Thunderbolt Secure connect driver2- Install both Intel management Engine driver and firmware + Thunderbolt Secure connect driver BUT, this can't be a proper fix because in a corporate environment we can't go through this every single time. It's a total waste of time/money for a corporate. On top of that, users get frustrated by this issue that is ahpenning constantly. HP PLEASE FIND A PROPER FIX. Hi there, my Helix laptop (purchased a few years ago) is giving me the "Keyboard Dock Fan Error" at startup. I am then unable to use the keyboard and mouse pad. I previously had this same error a couple of years ago and had solved it using the Firmware update.Now I tried:- BIOS update. Done updated to the latest BIOS version.- Tried doing again the firmware update (although I had done it a couple of years ago) but now I have Windows 10 and the firmware update executable on the Lenovo site says it is for Windows 8 or below. I tried it anyway but it gave an error saying: "This tool and EC firmware mismatch, or communication error is happened.".  Your help is much appreciated.- Najib

I have a W541 and it always worked well with the dock and dual external monitors, that is until the firmware was updated by Lenovo System Update to the Latest Version: 2.33.000 about a week ago. Now when you boot the laptop in the dock, the post shows on the two external monitors then they go black and seem to disconnect as the power saving icon shows on both monitors. If you undock the laptop at this point and immediately re-dock, the two monitors light up and no more issues. While this isnt a huge issue, it is very annoying since it always worked properly before the update. Any suggestions on a possible fix are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I wonder why Dell do not communicate this at this way. After that myTb15 works almost perfect. Please let me know if this is also with you guys!

The latest BIOS, drivers and Firmware can be downloaded at the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Dell highly recommends installing the following BIOS / Drivers step by step in the prescribed order to ensure optimal performance. Failure to install BIOS, drivers and Firmware in this document may result in undesirable performance.
1.       Connect the AC adapter to the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) and then connect the Thunderbolt™ 3 (Type-C) connector to the computer.
2.       Search your system model name under Select a Product selection or enter the service tag of your system to locate Drivers & downloads page on the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Change the OS to view all available updates for your system.
3.       Flash the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) available for the system. This is posted in the "BIOS" section.
