Write caching

Q: Write caching

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Write caching

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Write caching

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.
Hard drive speed boosts - Vista Forums
Also a tut on how to enable it with AHCI on, but I don't think it was relevant if you read all the comments in the tutorial.

But be notified that having it enabled has caused many to have a lower reported WEI score.

Hi guys, my USB HDD started showing the 'delayed write failure' pop-ups so I changed the properties to 'Optimize for performance' and enabled write caching (previously it was set to 'optimize for quick removal').

Now the HDD wont show up in any PC, not in explorer / disk management ......i have rebooted, unplugged and waited, opened the caddy disconnected HDD and put together again but nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, there is about 250GB of stuff on it lol.

With explorer. Copy a large, say 700mb file from folder a to b on a regular HDD, should take 10-15 secs right. If you watch resmon, disk activity, you will see write activity to the destination folder for almost a full minute afterwards. Anyone know what's going on here? I don't have restore (previous versions of files) enabled either.

I have all my external drives set to "quick removal" option, so I don't have to use the "safe-removal" option.

On my internal drives, I have it set to "Enable write caching."

It says that a power outage could cause data loss.
Since I always use the "sleep" option, is this option safe?

Thanks,

Unless you have power outages often, then I wouldn't worry about it set like that.

So, it's time I asked a question. I've got this awesome little 7eeePC you've probably read about as I babble on about it like a schoolgirl in many of my posts and I'd like to show of it's WEI score to convince folks it's not quite as castrated as some have insinuated. Only, the machine will not complete system assessment complaining about write caching not being enabled. I try to enable it but

A:Write Caching

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

On another thread I had stated that there will be a performance hit if you turn off write caching for a SSD. But on second thought, I am not so sure any more.

What write caching allows (in my understanding) is to accumulate records in a buffer so that so that they can be written to the disk in one big swoop. That is an advantage on a spinning disk because all those records are written during the same rotation - and there is also only one seek for the arm.

I wonder though whether that brings the same advantage to the SSD where access time to any place is the same - and it is usually only 0.1ms. There would be an advantage if the records were written in larger blocks from the buffer because the SSD's write performance grows as the block size grows. But if records are still being written e.g. 4K at a time, there may not be an advantage.

Does anybody know whether the blocksize for the write operations increases with caching?

A:For the write caching experts

Hi whs - I see your point about the "write caching" and the SSD. Actually I think SSD's do write smaller blocks of data even faster than large sequential blocks so you could very well be right.

It would be interesting to run a series of tests with the "write caching" turned both on and off- Checking the Windows Disk WEI and checking the results of some of the disk benchmarking utilities (like HD Tune and ATTO).

At the moment I have my "write caching" turned on.

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 200 gig Hard Drive, 8mb cache buffer, running on XP. with P4, 3.06. When I run Boot Vis, it says "warning disk write cache disabled". If this is enabled, won't my computer boot faster and run and load faster, in general?

It seems to me I have seen somewhere that it has to do with hyperthreading, it has to be disabled? If this is true, is there any advantage in disabling hyperthreading in order get the 8 mb cache enabled. Is hyperthreading reall necessary? I run mostly games on this computer.

SHOULD it be enabled, and if so how do I do all this, in the bios?

A:disk write caching disabled

Hmm.

According to this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=332023

Write caching may cause slower disk performance in 2k and XP. I haven't really experimented with write caching on my Maxtor drive (a 200gB) or my Western Digital (WD-800JB). In fact, I'm not even sure if they have write-caching enabled.

You might want to check out this link, which tells you how to disable write-caching (it's Device Manager-based):

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=259716

Of course, as I'm sure you know, be careful when doing things with your hard drives.

I would like to be able to disable Write Caching for both of my external drives. One HDD is a 1TB, FAT32 formatted drive which allows me to disable write caching whereas my 650GB, NTFS formatted drive has the option completely grayed out.

As you can see from these screen shots (click to enlarge them), the drives look very different and for whatever reason, the option to disable write caching on the NTFS drive is not possible. I'm currently running Vista Ultimate x64 and have updated all drivers and BIOS. If anyone has an ideas, I'd be grateful for any information about how to disable this.

Hi

I have several 2TB WD My Passport and a Toshiba USB 3.0 external drives,
but none has the option to enable Write-caching policy under Policies tab.
I need to do this because my TB transfers between two drives is way too slow, about 58MBps average speed, only !!

I have another (new) 4TB Seagate USB 3.0, that one has the both options:
*Better performance (default)
* Enable write-caching on the device

So is there anyway I could enable Write-caching to speed up those drives as they should be?
My Laptop and all the external drives are USB 3.0, so it can't be this slow, no?

Please see the screenshot attached:

Any HELP is highly appreciated.

Hey All,

This is probably a pretty nooby question but I can't seem to find any answers online.

I used to use VMware Workstation, but I've since switched to Hyper-V as it's built into Windows 8.

I was setting up a server from scratch (2008 r2) and I added the role of Domain Controller to my server, which all went through with no problems at all.

I decided to check through the warnings given in the event log and I came across the following message:

Active Directory Domain Services could not disable the software-based disk write cache on the following hard disk. Hard disk: %1 Data might be lost during system failures.

(ID: 1539)

I've tried to manually disable write-caching, but I just get the following message:

This device does not allow its write cache setting to be modified

Does anybody know how to disable the write caching? I can't seem to find any documentation on this and I'm not sure if this is just standard behaviour of Hyper-V?

Cheers all,

Matt

Dear Forum Users,

I have two HDs in my system:

1. WD Caviar Blue 500GB (OS Drive)
2. WD Caviar Green 1TB

I've read that enabling write-caching may speed up drive performance. I checked on my 1TB drive, it was already enabled. On my 500GB drive though it was disabled.

So I then decided to enable write-caching on my 500GB drive. I proceeded to do so without any apparent problems. However after doing a system restart I saw that it went back to being disabled again.

I've tried this several times already, same thing each time!

Enable write caching restart write caching disabled again.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? How to fix this?

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I've noticed this strange behaviour where, after I have un-ticked "Enable write caching" for the main (only) drive in my laptop (Intel 240GB SSD) the setting keeps getting turned on again every time Windows wakes up from sleep. I turn if off again, and then it's on again after waking up.

What could be causing this, and is there another way (eg. group policy or registry setting) of forceably, permanently, disabling write caching? Or could this be some sort of driver issue? I wouldn't have thought turning a feature *off* would be a problem though.

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

A:can cortana write an email or can i use to write with microsoft word?

Cortana is essentially a search tool. It's a bit of a toy (my personal opinion!) which attempts (sometimes) to give a slightly intelligent answer to a very limited range and format of questions, otherwise simply opening your browser and launching a search.

It can recognise speech as well.

It can also search your indexed files and folders.

It also gives some sometimes amusing answers set up by MS to silly questions.

So no, it's not a word processor, nor is it an email client.

If you're worried about the age of your office suite, I wouldn't particularly, unless there's a particular document type you need which it doesn't support. You can always use one of the free office suites, or one of the many free word processors if you prefer.

I almost never prepare text for emails in a separate word processor, unless it's to be attached as a document.

Hope that helps.

I have a Gateway Computer running Windows 98. MY problem concerns a Philips 3610 Read/Write - Write CD. It has always been a problem i.e. - balky. I am using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.5 software. I can burn a CD but it is only readable on the Philips. I can't get it to initialize on the other CD drive on the computer or on the drive in my wife's Compaq laptop. I had to transfer a 5MEG file to her computer and finally had to install an old Zip Drive to do it. Sometimes (sometimes not) I get an error message after the CD is burned, but it reads OK in the parent drive.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Also, went to Philips website to try to find new drivers - It's lousy!

I trust you have the updates from Adaptec/Roxio.

Try the Sony CD Extreme software: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dlag...m/dsonyweb/cdrw/SonyCDExtreme1.3.390Setup.exe It should work fine with your burner. If you just select “data” in the opening wizard it will record session at once, close the session so it can be read and leave the disc open so you can add more stuff. Very robust software – make sure you don’t use a formatted CD. If that still doesn’t work I suggest trying some different blank media.

If you are recording to a formatted CD then you are packet writing and it can’t be read on any other computer until you install the reader for it from http://www.roxio.com

I don't have any kind of burning software, and am forced to rely on Windows XP's built in Write-to-CD software. The problem is, even with a rewritable CD drive, re-writable DVD drive, and re-writable CD's and DVD's, any material I put on them with the built in Windows XP writing software, becomes write-protected, making it impossible not only to remove the material at a later date, but also to add anything to it. A CD can have over 675 mb of free space that is absolutely inaccessible because of this problem.

Is there any way to reformat these CD's or otherwise remove the write-protect on them? Some of the data on these CD's is not the kind I'd like anyone else to see, meaning that if they are absolutely absolutely ***ABSOLUTELY*** untouchable forever and ever and ever, I would be forced to destroy them altogether (likely breaking them in half or something) and dispose of them as trash (environmentally unsound or not) rather than submit them to a recycling center and risk some noseybody reading what's on them before recycling them.

--NYC

A:Windows XP Write-to-CD: Write-Protect blues

All CD's are read-only and the contents cannot be changed. Some use packet-writing, but those only erase the previous version and write a new one, so they can't be changed, either. Space is less and gets used quickly.

The best way to have read/write access to data is to use an external USB drive or thumb drive.

It is best to stick with the standard ISO format. Save all your changes to a folder untill you are ready to burn the final copies to CD.

I'm trying to understand how fast a DVD burns, I mean in minutes it takes to burn data to the disk. What I want to burn to DVD is actually just data for storage, not movies.

Let's say I want to burn 4.7 Gigabytes of data to a DVD. The way I calculate it, if I burn at 2.4x, it should take about 27 minutes to do this, once the burn is started.

Is that about right?

Hey all,

I am having an issue with a Western Digital 320Gb SataII drive that I purchased a little while back. The store I purchased it from insists that there is nothing wrong with the drive, but I think there has to be?
The first time it happened, I was downloading files from a P2P application. Failed to write to disk on the partition and something along the lines of G:/$mft kepy popping up(I guess to do with the boot table on the disk?). Figured that there was just an error, so I ran a chkdsk, but it didn't find anything. I rebooted the comp, and tried chkdsk again, but this time it couldn't access the partition. I had a couple more errors or problems with it (tried partition magic, but that wouldnt even open because the partition table was screwed up or something), so I decided to backup and then format the partition. Great, everything eventually worked again, and I copied everything back.

A couple of days later, I was copying some files over, and I had the same issue again, random popup saying something like "failed to write to disk - delayed write failed" and then my system crashed and I rebooted. Couldnt access the partition when I tried to chkdsk again. However, I still cannot find any bad sectors on it when I finally managed to get chkdsk working again (after a couple more reboots). It also took me three reboots/tries to get an image of the disk because it had problems reading it.

Well what you need to do is get a copy of Diskeeper. Go to www.diskeeper.com and get a trial version. Then you open that up, and analize the drive your having trouble with. Soon you can go into your options and run a program in there called Frag Shield or something like that. That will change your MTF size to a proper size (Cheoose Recommended settings) and the problems will go away. I had the same thing happen to my old 250 GB drive. But that should take care of everything.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Hey,
I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

Guys, hoping someone can help me out...

I'm experiencing a problem when I'm browsing, in that there are Mbs & Mbs being dumped into my temporary folders.

I normally use IE8, but have also used Google Chrome and they both react in the same manner.

Approx 10 mins of browsing, plus a round of Tiger Woods Online can see as much as 150 Mbs be left in either the Temporary Internet Folder or Internet Cache (depending on the Browser used).

I have to run CCleaner on a regular basis, to stop slowdown due to this.

Has anyne else seen this, or can anyone assist in rectifying?

Thanks in advance.

A:Caching Issue

There is an Advanced>>Security option under IE Tools>>Internet Options to Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder when closing the browser. Alternatively, you can reduce the space allocation for the folder under General>>Browsing History>>Settings.

Hi

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on 192.168.0.7 and 192.168.0.9.
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

I have update accelerator running on ipcop proxy server set up and it is set to cache windows updates, sp3 and few other updates never completeley cache and just get bigger and bigger long after the offending PC has finished updating.

the extention of the updates with the problems is *.spf

A:Caching SP3 for Xp on proxy

Kept deleting and re-caching sp3. Finnaly worked ok. Same for some of the other *.spf updates. With others the problem is ongoing but I'm sure if I keep deleting and re-caching they will work eventually. If anyone has a more reliable solution I'd love to hear it.

Hello!

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:SSD SRT caching question

hmm; Personally I've never seen CACHING to be configurable.

Placing the pagefile.sys entirely on an SSD would seem doable . . .

Hi,

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.
Does anyone have any ideas?

For reference, the WPAD.dat is (edited of course):
//
// Start of Script
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{
// Convert everything to lower case
var lhost = host.toLowerCase();
host = lhost;

This is the problem I have:

On Windows Vista Business machine.
I have created 4 identical CDs. They all have the same volume label.
I'm not sure about any possible serial number that I have heard people talk about.

I became uncertain about whether they had all been created properly and decided to check them one at a time in the same drive.
After doing a file comparison of the 1st CD against the same set of files on the hard drive, I put the 2nd CD in the drive and did the same file comparison.
Instead of it taking a couple of minutes, it took about 10 seconds, which makes me think that Vista is caching the CD contents somewhere,
and when a CD with the same volume label is inserted it assumes it is the same CD and just uses the cached contents.
If I reboot the machine and try the 2nd CD again, the file comparison takes about 2 minutes again, which you would expect, since rebooting is going to clear the cache.

Although Googling this gave me a couple of people with the same problem I can't find any info on the caching, and in particular, on how to turn it off.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "Write Caching" which I did find in the DVD drive properties.
Does anyone know how to turn this caching off?

Many thanks in advance....

Some months ago, I sent an email message to someone from Outlook, and the text of the message was simply "It works!"

I have several blogs I administer. They are wordpress sites. Sometimes when I try and access them, I get a blank screen with only the words "It works!"

I have tried a cache cleaner called CCcleaner, and done all of the other memory dumps that are available thru Windows.

This problem occurs across all browsers, I have seen it in Flock, Firefox, Chrome, Safara, and IE 8, so its definitely a problem within my system.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

hey there my laptop came with a seagate hybrid hard drive which has 20GB SSD... recently i did a clean install of windows but now i can't seem to figure out what caching software came with the seagate hybrid drive.. any help would be appreciated.. thanks!

A:what caching software does seagate use

It may not have come with any such software, I've never had to install any when going to a new drive. Have you checked with Seagate or the maker/vendor of the Notebook/Laptop? Basically put, cache is a memory module on the interface board on the drive, holds data temporarily while writing to the disk/s.

the superfetch feature has seemed to stop caching as much...

ive had fresh install of vista ultimate for 2-3 weeks now and Superfetch was filling the 1.5Gb spare RAM with cache data (as it does) , now its seemed to have stopped even though the service is still running...

right now its saying 450Mb cached and 900Mb free ???

Now i was testing it on and off when i first installed Vista to see what the fuss was about and most of the time when it was OFF it would still cache to about the same figures as above but most of the time it would end up filling all 1.5Gb cache (yes even when off)... NOW its been on 2 weeks running and filling up the cache quicker than normal (as its learning) but then from yesterday its stopped filling it right up??? why is this???

I did install Firefox Pre-Loader and have uninstalled it due to problems with firefox actually NOT opening - I doubt that would have affected it

THANKS

Hi all,

Quick question. I have a spare Agility 2 64GB SSD doing nothing so I'm wondering if I can use it as a pagefile drive for my OS drive which is also an SSD drive.

*NOTE*

All the threads I've read about this have all been about using the OS drive whether it be an SSD drive or HD for pagefiling. I want to use a SPARE SSD drive to pagefile FOR my OS drive.

Is this even possible and if so, how do I do it?

A:Using a spare SSD for Pagefile and caching

Yes, it is possible.

The general advice is not to do it, since it can shorten the life of the SSD because the pagefile is written to often and SSDs have their limitations in regards to that.

But things have gotten better: Taking a Hard Look At SSD Write Endurance - Slashdot

It's for you to decide. I say better to make sure you have enough system RAM (8 GB is starting to get into the "a lot" zone for 64 bit OS - on a 32 bit OS, 4 is "a lot".)

I see you have 24 GB of RAM installed. The pagefile still does certain things, but will be used much less than a system with say 4 GB RAM.

If you do it, make sure TRIM command is active in Windows.

All you would need to do is tell Windows to set the page file to the drive, while deleting the current page file. Nothing difficult.
