Windows xp home missing internal speaker controls and volume controls

Q: Windows xp home missing internal speaker controls and volume controls

I recently tried changing my default audio back to my installed soundcard, I have used this soundcard on many occasions without any problems, when reconnecting my webcam it made itself the default device. After disabling the audio on the webcam, and disabling the audio on the internal Realtek soundcard and enabling my soundblaster soundcard, I saved changed and restarted my computer. When I went to the sounds and audio devices in control panel, it shows "no audio device" under volume, and under audio its showing "no playback devices" and "no redording devices" "no midi playback devices" and the dropdown arrow is greyed out so I can't set up my default device. I went to hardware, and it shows both the internal and external soundcards there and that they are both working properly. The media control devices were showing a yellow exclamation mark beside them before, but after uninstalling and reinstalling everything in the sounds aand audio devices hardware tab it was corrected. I have tried going to Device manager, and uninstalling the system speakers and then clicking on "check for hardware changes" and having them be reinstalled, but it has not corrected the issue. I have no installation disc to reinstall windows xp in repair mode..... Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem? Also my sound recorder is also missing. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

With a separate master volume, a WAV volume, an Line-In Volume, an nVidia Remote Control, a Creative Remote Control, Logitech Keyboard Volume Controls, a Sound Blaster Audigy Volume Control, and finally volume, and sound controls on the speaker system. . . Did I mention separate volume on Windows Media Player, Creative MediaSource and RealONE Player?

Let's just say controlling the volume on my system can get a little confusing because of all the different volume controls.

My simple question is this: Is there a way to lock any of the volumes on the Windows Volume Control (Such as the WAV Volume and LINE-IN Volume)? Some applications change these which makes it difficult for many of my peripherals and me as a user to keep track, and I'll suspiciously find myself blowing my ears out or not being able to hear the music...

I'd rather have everything locked at around 85% and just control the master volume.

THanks,
James

I am using a Xonar ST on Win 7 64bit......All of a sudden I noticed I was only getting sound on the right side. I reseated the card, reseated all of the connections, and changed the power connection from the PSU, and made sure on board audio was disabled.

I went into the control panel and balanced the audio....Left was set all the way down for some unknown reason. The volume on both sides will work at the proper level provided there is a separate control.....

The main system volume on the keyboard still only affects the left side. If I open winamp, the volume slider will control both left and right equally (provided the system volume is maxed out); turning down the system volume will leave the right channel at whatever level the winamp volume slider is set at.

I tried the latest driver, also tried the Uni driver. I also deleted the hsmgr file in windows/syswow64 that I saw people complaining about. I reinstalled the driver and hsmgr32 and hsmgr64 came back and are running at the same time. I unchecked them from msconfig so they do not start, but nothing has changed. Is this a driver problem or is there some other windows conflict. Since the programs seem to be able to individually control the volume I am thinking this is windows related. If I open youtube, the youtube volume slider controls both left and right. Does this have something to do with the soundcard exclusivity settings?

Is this a registry problem? It's like the volume is only monaural.

Try the Windows uninstall/reinstall. Go to the Device Manger, in the Sound section RIGHT click on the entry for the Xonar to highlight it and then LEFT click on "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This will correct any Windows corruptions with the sound card.

okay so this started back when i had windows vista, i thought upgrading to 7 would take care of it, but it carried over to the new operating system. here's the 2 problems i have, and i believe they are tied together or i wouldnt mention the browser one.

problem 1: volume control. at completely random times, the volume controller will just take over and turn itself all the way down or all the way up. any attempt by me to move it it just resets, if i slide the bar to the top it'll slide it back to the bottom, and vice versa. more often than not it turns the sound down. but once in a while it maxes my volume. the only way i can regain control of the sound is to reboot.

problem 2: i only mention this cuz it happens simultaneously with the sound problem so im pretty sure they're related. my browser will act normally until the problem kicks in, then it acts as if someone is hitting the "back button" and holding it down. i cant go forward a page, i cant open a web page, i cant do anything, it stays on my homepage forever. you can see it try to go to a new page but then poof its back on the home page. this makes browsing or using the internet impossible.

Do you have a volume icon in you start-up tak bar ? if so right click on it & open volume controls, put a markin check the microphone balance box, are all your levels adjusted right ? right click your icon again & check your Adjust Audio Properties are ok.

I have mine set to, Playback, Volume on the high side, Preferred device, Avance Sound Playback [F480] , Show Volume control on task bar box is checked. Recording volume on high side, Preferred device same as playback, preferred quality radio, put a check mark in use preferred devices only.

Hi all. I have a minor annoyance with my system settings and I'm hoping someone can help me out with it.

When I play music on my PC, I adjust the volume by using the Volume specific +/-keys at the top of my Logitech multi-media keyboard.

Here's the problem. In addition to controling the "playback" volume sometimes it also controls the wav/mp3 volume as well as the CD audio volume.

What I want is to be able to always have the wav/mp3 and CD volumes set to maximum and only have the playback volume adjust when I use the keyboard to control the volume.

I've attached a picture to be more specific...I've circled the controls I want to remain as-is.

I guess what I'm saying is that when I hit the volume keys on my keyboard I want it to only control the playback volume and not the other one's.

Any ideas?

A:Volume Controls

It actually depends on which media player you use. When you adjust the volume in both Realplayer and Musicmatch, it moves the wave and CD audio sliders, however WMP, Winamp and Quintessential have their own independent volume controls.

Experiment with the media players you use most often.

Hello. Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to read this.  I`m in a crux...

Here are my computer specs:
OS: Windows 7 64bit home premium (latest windows updates installed)
CPU: Intel i5 3570K (slightly oc`d to 43)
mobo: Asus p8z77-v Pro/thunderbolt
gpu: Asus HD 7850
sound card: none (using onboard realtek)
logitech mouse
cheap keyboard
speakers: logitech externally powered (two speakers 1 subwoofer - really cheap)

I put all the parts together myself and had the system running nice - before I moved.  At the time there were no problems with sound I also had a DAC connected via USB, so I was switching between headphones and speakers depending on the occassion.

Here`s where my prob started.  I recently moved.  I carried the pc by hand to ensure it didn`t get banged up or incur any excessive shock.  Aside from the slight bobbing motion of my walking I`d believe no harm was done to the machine.

I hooked it up at the new apartment, with the hdmi cable going from ati card to the TV.  The TV plays back the sound perfectly - running the sound through the speakers though the volume is nearly inaudible over the fan sound.  I tried to play sound through various software, youtube, windows media player, vlc, and others (ensuring their respective volume sliders were at full), but it`s still quiet.

When I hooked up the PC this second time the mouse and keyboard were most likely connected to different usb... Read more

A:Very quiet volume although all (?) volume controls are maxed.

As you say the sound over your TV is excellent, there is almost certainly nothing wrong with the performance of your on-board sound. Without seeing them, am I right in thinking that you take a lead from the audio out at the back of your computer to the speakers, and their internal amplifier drives the sound output ?  If so, and this may be very silly, is this lead plugged into the correct socket at the back of the computer ?

Failiing that, see if you can borrow some speakers from a friend, any speakers at all will do. This will enable you to determine if the problem is with your speakers or the sound output.

Make sure that none of the keys are sticking or that there is something between the keys so that more then one key is being depressed. Clean with compressed air. You can also try updating the driver. Try a different keyboard preferably a wired one to test.

A very elementary layman's question:

With computer sound, there are multiple and apparently independent volume controls: For example: Windows Media Player has a volume control, the computer sound card has a sound control, and my external speakers have their own volume control. Do these work in series and are they really independent of each other? Is it better to have a high volume setting inside the computer with low volume externally, or vice versa? I am a little naive about this. Would appreciate some learning about this. Thanks.

A:Multiple Volume Controls

usually the volume from your onboard sound device/card or an add on sound card volume control is usually sync'd with your system volume. Volume from your players, wmp, itunes, winamp etc are independent by default. I usually only use system volum controls to mess with sound, or you'll wind up changing your volumes for your player devices quite often. Some songs or media files may be louder than others.

Some time ago, after the installation of some program or accidental modification of system settings (I'm guessing), I lost the volume nob control and the mute button control on my HP One Touch Multimedia Keyboard. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling the drivers from the HP Support Disk I recieved with my computer but now in addition to the sound controls, I've lost control of every other one touch button except for the standby button. This includes: internet, shortcut buttons, cd/dvd contol, etc. I searched around my system and the drivers are there: I can go to the Keyboard Manager and change settings, but the buttons don't work. I've searched through the entire forum but no solution applies directly to me. If it helps, I'm running win98SE on an HP 9680C computer. I'm not sure exactly what kind of keyboard it is (I don't know where to find the model #), but I'm guessing it is a USB obviously because it has a USB port in each side. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a HP dv7-3069wm with Windows 7, 64 bit. My laptop has a touchpad above the keyboard for volume, play, stop and wireless. About a week ago, they stopped working.

I downloaded and installed the drivers and nothing happened. In hindsight, I don't think I got the right drivers. I think I downloaded drivers for the regular touchpad and not the one up top.

I read that taking the battery out and putting it back in would solve the problem. I did this. Well, before, I still had a light for mute and wireless (mute on, wireless off). It didn't affect the volume as I could still control it from the desktop. As for the wireless, I guess I'm lucky to have an ethernet cable around. Now, those lights are gone. All I have is the slidebar for volume (still doesn't work), forward, back, play/pause, and stop (none of these started working either).

I've also done virus scans and can't find anything. I also tried a system rollback and nothing.

The touchpad drivers aren't for the stuff above the keyboard.
In most HP's that's called something like "Quick Launch Buttons".

Hi all,

I'm running XP on an HP Pavilion media center m7580n.
Recently, I noticed that the computer was no longer responsive to the volume control keys on my MS Natural keyboard Pro, connected by USB.
I switched the USB port... no change.
I tried updating the driver, I had the current driver.

So I hooked up my wireless hp multimedia keyboard 5187URF.
Similar problem.
The other hotkeys work, like internet, email, play, eject, sleep.
But when I try to use the volume control keys, I get the onscreen volume bar, but no response. It neither increases or decreases.
It simply says "Increasing Volume" or "Decreasing Volume" and disappears after 1 second, whether I'm still holding down the button or not.

When I hit mute, it says "Mute Off."

I updated the driver, but no change.

This seems to be a common problem, but I can't find a solution.

Any help?

Does the volume change when you right click the sound icon in the task bar and use that to adjust the volume?Do you use speakers? Have you checked to make sure the speakers are plugged tightly into the speaker port? Are they turned on? Power cord (if your speakers have one)plugged all the way into the outlet? Do your speakers have a volume control? If so is it turned up? Do you have another set of speakers you can try? I'm asking the basic questions because I have had people complain about no sound and it turned out the problem was related to one of the above. If checking the things I mentioned don't work it's possible that your sound device has died since you said you used 2 different keyboards and neither worked to control the volume. It's also possible that your speakers have come to the end of their useful life.If you haven't checked Sound properties do so.Start menu/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume tab.Under Device volume click Advanced. Make sure nothing is muted. If it is unmute.edit to add: My Microsoft multimedia keyboard does not say "Increasing Volume" or "Decreasing Volume" when I use it. I get a small graphic in the lower right corner that shows the progress with a green bar. I was hoping it would say increasing or decreasing so I could see if it disappeared after a second or two.

Hello to anyone has knowledge of, or has a good PC fault-finding background
on how to fix this problem:

Somehow I have lost my advanced volume controls in Windows XP - Professional SP1, 2002).
The controls I am talking about have the following fields of 'Volume Control', 'Wave', 'SW Synth', 'CD Player', 'Line In', under a title bar of 'Volume Controls'.
If the volume controls are selected from the quick launch icon in the system tray to the right of the task bar - by right clicking and selecting "Open Volume Control'; or from Control panel, the volume control application will appear in the taskbar, and from there I can right-click and elect to move, minimise, restore and maximise the volume controls, but regardless of my actions the application does not appear on the desktop.

I have ensured the volume drivers are ok and the speakers are appropriate for the system (this is a Toshiba Tecra Notebook). The only cause I can think of is that I have been using dual screens, but I have tested to make sure the application is not trying to appear on the second screen. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the SoundMAX driverusing the Toshiba startup disks, and verified this by losing and gaining sound, but this does not help the volume controls problem.

I have also tried to run the application from Windows, Sys32,sndvol32.exe but get the same result.

Any hints?

Hi, I am running Windows XP Home on my PC and have two user accounts. When I change user to the "administrator" account and go into "Open Volume Control" (icon in tray at lower right), it opens up the "Volume Control" screen with 5 different settings. The second one, "Wave," keeps going all the way down to the bottom, even though I keep pushing it all the way back up to the top. This causes a problem for me while I work (signed in as the other user) since I am a medical transcriptionist and need that volume to hear my dictators!

I have tried shutting down the PC after changing the setting in the hopes that it would "save" it to no avail. I have tried creating a new user account with "administrative" powers and saving it there to no avail. (I Googled this problem and came across a forum post about this, and that was the suggestion under the theory that the "administrative" user account had been corrupted somehow.)

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated before I snatch myself bald! (Pulling my hair out.)

Could be due to the keyboard using the default Windows keyboard driver, that and as far as a Logitech driver goes it uses the older iTouch which isn't supported under Windows 7. There is one thing you can try and that is Setpoint,

Download SetPoint 4.80 - FileHippo.com

and see if it will recognize and work with your keyboard. If it does that should get your volume keys working, as well as allowing you to use the rest of the extra function keys that may not be working.

The above is for the previous version (4.8) as the latest (6.0) has a tendency to be buggy even on mice and keyboards that support it. It is also for the 32 bit version and if you need the 64 bit version, let me know and I can upload it for you.

Could this be a software conflict between PCTV and my Microsoft wireless keyboard and/or between the keyboard and the remote control? If so, what do I need to do to fix it. If not, what else could it be?

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Hey, I have the same problem on my HP desktop. It's weird. Sometimes the volume goes away and then just comes back. The oddity is that if I double click on the windows defacto speaker icon it says no device is installed. I have the media center deluxe wireless keyboard and mouse combo, and never had this problem with my Logitech wireless one. It HAS to be something with either the keyboard program or the audio chipset. What kind of audio card are you using?

Hello everyone. After much googling and my own attempts, I'm still having difficulties with my mic. It works some of the time, and when it does it's super quiet although I have all the volume controls all the way up.

I own an Asus Eee Pc 1001p. It has Windows 7 Starter, Intel 82801 PCI Bridge 2448, and also the lovely Realtek HD software crap that seems awful from what I've read. The mic is built into the laptop.

I've turned up the volume, checked to make sure boost was on in just about every place: windows controls, skype controls, and realtek controls. The mic will work sometimes, but like I said it's pretty quiet when it does. And sometimes it doesn't even work at all.

Thank you for reading

A:Mic not working after checking all kinds of volume controls

Do you mean when you speak into the mike the sound that comes out is quiet, this sounds to me like it could be a sound card problem have a look in the device manager to see if there are problems devices.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post my thread, but here it is:

There's a problem where, the volume buttons to turn the volume up and down, on my Keyboard and Headset, stopped working. This happened a while ago, but now it's started to bother me since I simply want to adjust the volume when I'm ingame, and I don't want to click the volume button on the taskbar, then adjust it, blah!

If anyone knows how to fix this, thanks, and I doubt it's a problem with the keyboard and headset itself, since both are affected.

I'm using a Logitech G15 Keyboard, and a wireless Creative HS-1200 headset.

A:Keyboard/Headset volume controls not working?

Check your manual. Do you have a key or set of key strokes that deactivates the speakers?

Check drivers.

Another problem can be with the headphone jack itself

The headphone input jack is stuck, there is a small switch inside the jack which shuts off the speakers when headphones are plugged in. When the headphones are pulled out, the speakers turn on again. Determine which jack you are using and use the other.

Hello,

I have a Qosmio G35-600. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure my volume control use to have advanced controls and I had access to the input monitor, which is now greyed out. I reinstalled my SigmaTel Audio Driver (qg600audiox.exe), but that did return the advanced controls nor give access to the input monitor. The volume control is Microsoft volume control version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_odr.101209-1647: Service Pack 3).

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance

A:Qosmio G35-600 - Advanced controls of volume control

Hi watson123,

What input monitor you mean exactly?

On the right side of Qosmio G35 you have the volume control wheel to adjust the volume. Using this wheel you can increase or decrease the volume of internal speakers or headphones but it doesn?t offer more options. It?s just for controlling the volume.

Is the sound card listed in device manager properly and do you have any yellow exclamation marks or unknown devices?

Hi All..
A bit of an odd one that i've not seen before!! I have a Satellite Pro L450D-12X here that has a niggling issue with F5/F6 buttons and (FN)1&2 buttons (for volume) that are reversed.. ie up is down and down is up!!
Seems like a firmware issue as this issue exists even before OS is loaded.
I've taken a look at downloads but can't find any bios downloads. Current version is Phoenix 1.30

Any help would be appreciated

This is gonna be a lame question, and I'm not sure where to post this question, but this problem is driving me crazy-

Everytime I play my songs in Winamp, the Wave Balance on the volume controls goes all the way up and it starts distorting the sound. I'll move the level to the half way mark, and it will remain there for the rest of the song, but once the next song comes on, it shoots right back and distorts the sound again. I just got a new hard drive (p.o.s Seagate) but with the same sound card (Sound Blaster).

What is the problem and how can I rectify it permanently??

Thanks..

When I double-click on the Volume icon in my system tray, the volume control panel opens, but the Advanced Controls window is grayed out and inaccessible. I am thus unable to access any tone controls. In the record mode for the volume control panel, I CAN access the Advanced Controls, BUT the treble and bass tone controls are grayed out and thus inaccessible.

Can anyone tell me why this is? Is there a setting to fix this? Do I need to reinstall a part of Windows to fix this?

Any help or recommendations would be appreciated!

Guess what guys ? I have a new problem ! Imagine that.I've googled for answers and closest I came was the Dell quickset app. But,after downloading 3 versions (the last one actually installed) my problem is not solved. It's a small issue really.But,annoying....

The problem is when I use the keyboard buttons to either raise/lower/mute audio volume levels, the buttons work BUT...no level indicator is being displayed onscreen.Anybody else ever have this problem and how did you solve it ?

This is mommas laptop and any help much appreciated. The laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400.I'll be back in about 30-45 mins.Gotta run to the grocery store for her.

A:No Level Indicator When Using Keyboard Audio Volume Controls

Have you tried this?

Quote:
Look on the taskbar and see if you have the Dell Quickset icon there. It's in the shape of a blue Q with a yellow tail sticking out of it. Click the icon (on some versions you must right click it) and uncheck 'disable onscreen volume meter.'

If the icon is missing look under Start/All Programs and see if you have the Dell Quickset program. Follow the arrow to the word 'Quickset' and click on it and the 'Q' icon should appear on the taskbar.

Disregard model, quickset is the same for all models.

If the Q icon keeps disappearing check "notifications" Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons to force it to remain visible.

Morning,

Bit of a weird one here...within the last week - I installed a fresh copy of Win 7 x64 SP1 on a new office workstation. I am using the Logitech K800 keyboard and J.River Media Center for media playback.

NOTE: I am using the Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard and it's onboard Realtek Azalia HD audio chip. I am NOT using the Realtek drivers (more on that in a moment) - I am using the built in Windows 7 HD Audio drivers.

Long story short - I discovered some conflicts with the internals of the motherboard where the front panel headphone jack of my case (Antec P182) would exhibit static in the phones if moving the mouse on screen. Traced that to some weird issue with the USB ports so I had to install a separate front panel insert into the case and attached JUST the audio cable so I could get static free headphone listening.

Now the issue. When using J.River Media Center (and WASAPI Event Style from within Media Center) and I select "speakers" under it's Device Output area - I am able to use the Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down hot keys on the K800 to control the audio level that comes from the speakers.

But - if I change the Device Output to Headphones - using the exact same audio device - suddenly the three audio buttons (upper right of the keyboard by the Calculator button) suddenly do not work.

Couple things - I cannot recall in any previous build whether or not these button were working or not OR if I just decided to try them for the first time with headp... Read more

A:Volume controls on K800 Keyboard do not work with Headphones

In most cases the vendor's (Gigabyte ) sound driver should be used. The Windows installed HD Audio Codec are a "basic function" sound driver.

I would start with the proper sound driver and work from that. If the Antec front panel headphone/mic connection has an HD Audio connector use that, otherwise use the AC97 however that may be some auto detect functions that won't work.
