forcing a browser to cache images

Q: forcing a browser to cache images

Is there a way to force a browser (any of them, I have IE6, Netscape7, firefox1.0.4) to cache images only? I dont want to cache a page, because then I would have to refresh. But I dont want to have to download things such as avatars and pages of thumbnails over and over.

Preferred Solution: forcing a browser to cache images

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, it's been a long while since I've posted here because thankfully I've been (mostly) problem-free for the last few years. Much thanks to those who assisted me back then.

Lately though, I've been having an issue I would describe as "consistently annoying" or "annoyingly consistent". This is a Dell laptop and every once in a while (feels like every two weeks roughly), I'll wake it from sleep mode and my Google Chrome browser will immediately close out. I will open it again and it will within 10-15 seconds close out again while trying to "restore" my session. Repeated attempts will also close down without fail, but in quicker intervals (sometimes 3-5 seconds).

This has happened three times and each time I didn't know what it was. I tried a quick scan and nothing came up. I checked my add/remove program list and didn't see anything out of the ordinary that might be a culprit. Instead, to resolve the problem I merely did ... Read more

Hi,

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

AOL's browser Cache is like the Internet Explorer Temp internet Files. All it does is help make pages that youve already been to load a little quicker...not really worth the hassle because trojans and Virii can live there too!

I say dump it and that'll make 52 MB more space to store your porn! j/k

Anyway, if a user is at a kiosk and opens an allowed site and enters his credentials and later closes the browser and leaves then everything is fine. But, if there happens to be more than 1 browser open at the time then the next user can log into the previous
users site because it saved the credentials.
Need to keep credentials in that browser session only.

Yesterday my network speed started crashing and my ping times went up to 500ms using Speedtest.net

I assumed that my ISP was throttling me and I went on the phone this morning to see if I could flush them out.
They put me through all the paces of rebooting modems etc.

Then they asked me to clear my Chrome cache.
I of course rolled my eyes, thinking how it wouldn't matter.
Surprisingly, after I cleared it, my speed -- of my entire network, all devices -- went up to normal and my ping time went down by a factor of 10!
What kind of malware would be in my Chrome cache that could be causing so much difficulty and what could it have been up to?!

I have recently run a scan at PCPitstop. Everything checked out okay, except they pointed out a browser cache overrun. I have my cache set at 25 megabites. PCPitstop said I was using 52. This is somewhat perplexing because I have my browser set to empty Temp. Int. Folders every time browser is closed. Also, I delete my cookies every night.

Questions: How is it that I am using 52 megabites under the above circumstances? PCPitstop alleges that IE is notorious for browser overruns. Is this the experience of others using IE? And what do those reading this post use as their cache setting?

Thanks,

Hi,

I need help with a technical problem. It is a little complicated. I have been living with my girlfriend for the past two years and I have noticed her engaging into suspicious activity during the past few months. I suspect that she has been engaging in fraudulous online transactions. Especially since, she has been hiding her bank transactions from me and not allowing me to look at them. We both use the same computer, which has Windows XP and Firefox 8.0.1 installed. I know she does not save her username and her password on the browser. Do you know of a way I could uncover her username and password from her cache, or her cookies since I am not very knowledgeable about all this. I really need to know this so that I can find out for myself what is actually going on. I know this is a little bit dangerous, but I am trying to salvage our relationship.

In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 10 and 100 megabytes.
Click OK to accept the changes.

I'm posting this here because I've concluded my problems stem from networking issues, having said that I've no idea how to fix this because, well, I'm no good at anything relating to networks.

I'm encountering this problem on all of the browers I can access in my home -Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, on any one of the four computers at my home, running either Mac OS X 10.4 or Windows Pro or Home - they all have a browser issue that's making web developing a nightmare;

CSS files refuse to update properly. It's a real headache because at first I thought I was having cache problems with my browser, except I'm not. Unless all four computers and all of I.E, FireFox and Safari are having a bad day on each. I modify a css file, I save it, ftp shows the correct version while my browser comes up with the previous save, or worse. It varies across platforms.

I don't know what other information to include except say that I'm not behind a firewall...what do I do about this? Is this the right forum even?

(Note: the network didn't just suddenly screw up, I moved - network already in place)

Thanks for looking into this. This is killing me.

I understand how the browser cache works and what function it serves. What I don't know is at what point do objects cached in memory get written to disk during the "lifetime" of any given browser instance?

Also, is it possible to adjust the browser cache size to reduce the amount of memory the browser will use for caching or is the amount of memory the browser will use for caching independent of the size of the disk cache?

Thanks!

Many suggest that we should delete browser cache/temporary internet files to increase system/browser speed. They explain that browser cache causes fragmentation of system drive very fast. So deleting this on regular basis will enhance drive performance.
But I am afraid if this really increase browser performance. I guess browser cache/cookie helps to load webpage faster because the browser downloads this files when we visit them.
Also deleting browser cache after each browsing session will affect those who have limited download option. Because once i experimented that extensive browsing ~3 hrs will increase the browser cache size to ~80mb.
So, please help me out of this. Because if it really affects browsing speed in a negative way I would prefer to defrag system drive after each browsing session rather than deleting cache.

I don't get it. I'm on a page. I click a link. I only stay on the new page for maybe 5 seconds. I click the Back Button. I get "connecting" like the word will change in 5 seconds? There's like zero efficiency. I think there should be a setting.

I'm currently on Waterfox 24.0. Pretty nice browser. But it's bizarre that something built for speed makes you wait on every Back Button press.

A:Why don't browser Back Buttons use the Cache?

Hi MileAhead,

I think the real problem may be that some of the newer browsers try to use too much caching, and in some instances, they actually use a "cache ahead" technique with the assumption you may be clicking forward instead of backward; however, if this technique is deployed, you may have to click that browser back button multiple times to actually get back to the page you last visited.

This just recently started happening. Before, when I loaded a web page it would automatically fit itself into the open browser window, now I have to scroll to the right to see the entire web page. Is there anyway to "force" IE to fit the web page to the browser window?

You know the deal. You've collected tons of bookmarks over the years. Created a beautifully curated knowledge bank, and then one day you look up a bookmark, and the page it refers to is not there any more (and instead you see an ad by GoDaddy asking if you'd like to buy the domain).

For instance, I have a bookmark to an explanation of C pointers that's hosted on someone's home server. It's absolutely the best explanation of C pointers out there. And yes, I've downloaded the relevant pages as HTML files. But downloading HTML files for each and every one of my thousands of bookmarks will be really tedious, and very difficult to sift through later on.

It would be really nice if I could find a mechanism whereby: when I bookmark a page, a cache of the page is backed-up somewhere. So that, in future if I try to access that page, and the page is gone, I can use the same bookmark (and perhaps a combination of a keyboard shortcut) to refer to the cached backed-up version.

In fact, given the large number of super-smart programmers out there who I'm sure have faced the same issue, I'm 100% sure there is such a mechanism out there.

What would you recommend?

(I've found a single option called Diigo, but it's a premium feature and needs to be paid for. I would love to hear feedback if anyone's used it.)

(And yes, Internet Archive works in a pinch, but someone can ask IA to remove its cache of that page.)

A:How can I cache the full pages for all my browser bookmarks?

I did it a while ago with HTTrack. You need to import a list of links, one line per link, and if you just want the bookmarked ones, turn off site crawling.

I maintain a very simple web page that is updated once an hour. When someone returns to the page they typically have to manually initiate a refresh to see the most recent update. I have a similar problem with professionally maintained web site that I look at several times a day. This initial presentation is taken from the local cache, and I have to reload the page to see the latest data.

Yet, when I visit very frequently updated sites (a news page for instance), I get the latest version immediately. In the case of my own page, I found a way to force a refresh from from the server side, but it causes some objectionable artifacts. And when I visit the other site, it gets pretty annoying to have to force a refresh every time.

So, how does a browser determine whether to just display whatever is in the cache vs. refreshing from the site? I suppose I could set the cache size to 0, but that doesn't really solve the larger problem.

A:Solved: How does a browser determine whether to refresh from the cache?

One way to control if a browser should cache a certain page is to use a cache control metatag in the the given web page.

The current version is 48.0.2
I ask it, because Firefox doesn't have those buttons and options. Or, I can not hardly understand about what kind of buttons you're talking about.

But it is true that if you have a cache enabled, by default the cache files are saved in the  AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox folder. However, can disable cache at all. And as well, you can send cache files to any place. It is your choice.
And it is also true that the default location cleans Ccleaner perfectly, but if You change the location, then You must write also new rule for the CCleaner.
And it is also true that there can be a lot of files. By default it is and an infinite number of files and the size is 358,400 bytes, but you can change it if you want. You can set it beginning from 0 to what ever You want. These files are used only during one session  and then they are already obsolete.

I wanted to know, why is it that every time I try accessing the 3D online anatomical atlas on the http://www.visiblebody.com site I have to start downloading the necessary files again, even if the site itself (in the "slow connection?" paragraph) states that to help people like me on a slow connection, the atlas will stay in the browser cache (I use Firefox, since I can't seem to make it work on Internet Explorer) so you can visualize it without loading it until it is deleted manually.

The complete atlas (not just the head region demo) can be used only after a registration for a 7 day trial and clicking the green "launch visible body" button. After that the require a monthly paid subscription thus they have interest for you not using it offline, but after you go through the "launch visible body" button online (and probably get a random access code), it should load quickly if the files are in the cache still, why often isn't that the case?

I recently installed xp sp3 over a messed up xp home edition. I had no way of backing files up first, so did not do clean install.

All is working good except images, buttons, (yes even those annoying ads) will not load in Firefor OR Explorer.

So I'm guessing it's a windows thing since neither works.

I've reinstalled drivers. I've searched the internet over.

Tried to register on other sites I found first to get help, funny thing is the security code image... LOL I couldn't see it to be able to type it in... therefore could not register.
Glad this site allowed me to see the image!!!

Pulling hair out here. How can I get images in web browsers to load???

Thanks for ALLL help.

p.s. I'm a truck driver, so WHEN I get help, thinking positive here, I WILL thank you. Just not sure when I can log back on.

A:Browser images will not load

On some websites I can see images perfectly fine, and on some they are not showing up at all, then if i close down my comp and start it up again they appear.

I reformatted my comp thinking something was wrong, but its still happening, worse than b4.

Is there any way I can solve the problem, ? I don't know what's wrong so I have no idea where to begin trying to find a solution

oh and by the way, I've tried emptying out my cache serval times, and still no luck

And another thing (sorry I keep forgettin stuff cause i'm frustrated).... I'm running winxp, ie6.0 (incase u wanna know)

It was working fine till a week ago, and then i got a virus (a downloader virus apparently) and that's when the problems started, but i reformatted completely today and the problem is still there with my IE

I have no firewall installed on my comp either

A:IE Browser problems (with images)

When you formated did you do a quick format or a full one, because a quick one wont get rid of viruses only a full one will do that, and second GET A FIREWALL INSTALLED, Zonealarm is a good one and the basic version is free.

Hello all,

this is my first post. im having some very frustrating trouble viewing some images on my ebay site.

If you go to here: eBay UK Shop - cotton-love: leather jacket, mod, xs you'll see a banner going across the top of the page with facebook/blog/mypsace/contact etc.
That's the image which isn't showing up on my browser(s) (im using IE 7 and flock).

I've tried deleting cookies/temp files etc. It's also not showing up some images in my ebay descriptions too.

Would greatly appreciate any help anyone has to offer!

many thanks,

nigel

Recently only some jpegs online have become distorted in my browsers. I have yet to check IE9, but this is happening in firefox and chrome. As you can see, saving the image from the browser retains its distortion. Refreshing does not fix this. Clearing cookies and cache can alter the distortion. I'm quite worried due to this happening in multiple browsers. Could this be a graphics card problem? What's causing this and how can it be fixed?

I have no idea how to begin troubleshooting this.
Let me know if you can see the attached image.

A:Distorted images in browser(s)

kaidance,

Welcome to sevenforums.

Do you recall what software you installed and ever thereafter you had this problem?

One alternative is to restore your system to a point in time before this problem surfaced.

RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT

WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE |ENTER | NEXT |
check Show more restore points (lower left)|
Highlight the desired restore point |
Scan for affected programs (lower right) |
make a note of affected programs |
CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH

WIN is the key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top.

why is it that everytime i want to save an image, i right click and save image as and it always only saves it as a bmp?

even animated gifs, they save as bmp
anyway i can change it so i can save the images as what they are

A:Saving images in browser

When posting, always state your OS and version numbers along with names of programs involved in your problem. Always better to post too many details than not enough.

Sometimes it is as simple as keeping your Cache empty.

Internet Explorer->Tools->Internet Options->General Tab.
Click Delete Files and Also Delete All Offline, unless you save offline for a reason.

Also, here is a MS article that might apply:

There could be more, depending on your OS and versions.

A:images not display all browser ......

I got the same for IE and Firefox. You shouldn't get any problem with Chrome though.

I needed all browsers to work. Ejay, in this forum, simply put Off the Contrast in win7 setting to solve it.

It didn't work for me. His initial solution worked for me though: I created a new Admin User.

Found this thread : Images not displaying properly in any browser (The image in the first post I get occasionally, particularly long images).
I also sometimes get images similar to that displayed in post #12 in that same thread.
Most of the time when the images don't display, I just see the place holder. Although sometimes I don't even get the placeholder (Although rarely)
This happens on numerous sites.
If I right click on the place holder and select "View Image" sometimes it shows the image, other times it shows no image but says "<filename here> can't display because it has errors (Or words to that effect).
But I can got on another computer in the house, on the same network, (running Windows 8.1) and using Firefox and it displays the image fine. Both computers are wireless.
And followed all the tips listed in the above URL
I've run my AV (ZoneAlarm), Anti Malware (Anti malwarebytes), Spybot, CCCleaner, Refreshed Firefox, cleared cache, deleted temp files, did SFC /scannow (Which did not report any problems), I don't have ASC either.
I had Adbot Plus (?), and thought that may be causing problems, but disabled it to no avail.
But since the refresh, its no longer installed and the problem still remains.

This happens on Firefox, Chrome, and IE.

Thanks

Edit:
Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium
Gateway NV55C

Intel HD Graphics
All drivers up to date

Edit2:
I get these occasionally too:

Very strange problem that I've not seen before cropping up here - I wonder if anyone has any ideas?

The site in question is this one. If you click on the link "Xox Snack" on the left hand side it should display a page of thumbnails of products. For some reason the images are all marked as broken on one particular computer and I cannot figure out why.

The settings in Internet Explorer are all correct in relation to displaying images and there are no such problems with any other sites. An identical computer can read the site without issue, as can every other computer on which I have tested it. I have installed Firefox and the problem manifests itself in Firefox too, despite it using a different browser engine and security settings.

What on Earth could cause a single page to fail to display on a single computer using too different browsing engines but be fine on all other computers on the network, irrespective of the O/S and browser being used? There are some oddities on some of the images on the page (for example the source code for the site refers to a JPEG but if you try to save the image on one of the working machines IE and Firefox both interpret the the file format as PNG, but that's only the case for some of the non-displaying images, and the problem affects all).

System in use is IE6 on XP Pro (SP2) but as stated the problem affects Firefox in the same way so does not appear to be IE related. The problem is unique to that site with both IE and... Read more
