anyone know what's going on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good morning....

I am connected online using my dialup isp but when I click on the OE6 icon it immediately disconnects me from the internet and gives me a dial up connection pop up box to connect. HELP

How do I get rid of that dial up connection pop up and keep my self online with OE?

Just check this first, in internet explorer, click tools, internet options, connection,
Make sure the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" box is not checked. Then highlight your default connection in the same box, properties, settings, security tab, and also make sure "connect automatically" is not checked.

My Sent Items and Inbox folders became filled with emails on Tuesday and I was unable to send or receive emails until I removed several thousand old emails from both folders (which I did, then the system was running fine again as of late Tuesday). I discovered this problem when I attempted to send 3 emails with attachments, making the emails around 5 megabytes each in size (I did not realize that the recipient's system could not handle any email more than 2 megabytes - thus, my Outlook Express kept trying to send these emails every 1 minute for 3 hours until I discovered the problem). I had to delete around 100 email notifications that the recipient could not receive emails at that size and that my email boxes were full.

I corrected these problems and relocated the emails from my Outlook Box to Drafts (until the recipient can change his settings).

All day Wednesday (yesterday) I was able to send & receive emails without a problem. This morning I was sending & recieving as well, then all of a sudden, I was unable to receive any emails. When Outlook attempts to receive, I briefly see a box with the number of emails attempting to be received, then I get an Unknown Error message. I am able to send emails without any problem and my Internet connection has been stable all day.

I've rebooted, turned on & off Outlook. I even disconnected my Internet connection, then reconnected it. I've checked my Outlook settings and they are fine. I also turned off my ... Read more

Hi rherrygers

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you attempted to logon to your ISP's mail server to see what messages are still on the mail server along with determining the size of the messages?
Outlook Express may be timing out trying to download a message that is larger than normal.
Did you also send yourself a copy of the message with the attachment?

Can you post the exact error message please?
If the Send/Receive window is not appearing, you can make it appear by double clicking the area marked in red here:
When the Send/Receive window appears, click the Errors tab, right click on the error message and select Copy and paste the error message here.

Sometimes when I open outlook express and attempt to connect to get my mail, the password box doesnt fully refresh or something and outlook kinda freezes up, their is like a blank box where the password box used to be and the outline of the connection status box is open behind it but no connecting, and no dialogue, just a blank box. Also, when I try to click the X on the box to close it, my mouse dissapears when it moves over the box, however i can still click the x. Whenever this happens, I can usually reopen outlook immeadiatly after and it works like normal. Whats up?

A:Outlook express crashes... or something.

Outlook Express is closely integrated with Internet Explorer so sudden squirrely behavior of either one makes spyware the first thing to suspect.

If you haven't already, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder.

Please post back to let us know if that worked.

Nearly everytime I close Outlook Express it crashes. In fact there is a program named "msimn" (which I think is Outlook Express himself) which is still running when the program window is closed. Then it turns to "no response" and it can freeze my computer or most of the times my web browser.
I said "nearly everytime" because it doesn't crash everytime I close it. It's often when Internet Explorer is already launched.
This problem appeared some months ago but I don't know if it's consequent to any program installation.
My computer is two years old, 1Ghz, runs with Windows ME and has got 384 Mo RAM. It has got one drive separated in two ones of 22 and 15 Go. The first one is where Windows is installed and the second one is for documents. The first one has 9 Go free and the second one 3 Go.
My second problem is that I find it is too slow when comparing it to other 1Ghz computers. I think that it has to be infected by any small virus(es) that only slow it down and crash it sometimes. I give you here under the log of HiJackThis if you can find something strange in it.

Thank you !

I had the problem of Outlook Express 5.5 crashing when downloading my email. I used my laptop to download it and my desktop has been working fine, until now. It is doing it again, crashing on the fifth email each time I try. I have a Pent II with 64 Meg of ram. I suspect memory problems since I am having problems running scan disk and defrag. I get banners that pop up when I am on the internet with no message inside, just blank banners. I have a dial up connection and I have noticed the computer trying to dial up the internet when nobody was or had been on the computer for a few hours.

I suspect a cookie or program that is using up memory and trying to send info about me over the internet without my permission and in the process, making my computer run slow and now messing up my email.

Any suggestions?

Hi imjameshi and welcome to TSF!!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

I'm running Outlook Express 6 with Windows XP SP3.

When I click on a link in an email message, Internet Explorer fails to open and Outlook Express hangs, and I need to do a ctrl-alt-del to get out of it.

I've checked the problems listed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177054/ but that didn't make any difference, and I've also tried the advice I found elsewhere to go Start - Run REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL and reset Internet Explorer to default settings.

I've also found that the links to Windows Update in the standard windows Start menu don't work either.

I'm using ESET Smart Security 3.0.669.0 but nothing in the firewall log shows no connections blocked, and I disabled all protection options when trying to get this problem solved and it made no difference.

My daughter and I both have compuers, using the same phone line (not at the same time).

I just reinstalled WINDOWS in a better one for her, and also set up OE (IE 5.5 and I have IE6) The computer she had before had been given her and I don't think anyone set up OE (at least for her).

I thought at first we would be getting the same mail in, (both computers) but it seems like whichever is plugged into the phone line at the time gets the mail in? And shows the outgoing/sent, etc?

We both have our own Yahoo mail and use this mostly.

But, I get in newsletters, like daily horiscope in OE mail (from my Earthlink ISP address) and I've noticed that it's not coming in to my computer but coming into hers. Maybe because she went online when it was coming in?

I know Earthlink gives separate email addresses to sign in for, through their home page (I think) I never figured it out.

Also, I think there is a way to make another mail (besides OE) the default mail on a computer, but I can't figure out where it is.

I can find in OE where to put another return address in, like to "reply to" if something is sent via OE.

But I mean when you click a "send to" and a compose box comes up, it would come up from my (or her) Yahoo mail instead.

I'd have my Yahoo as default on my computer and she'd have hers on hers?

But I don't know about Outlook, just whoever happens to be online at the time gets the mail in on theirs?

1. It used to be that after I booted up I could go directly to a website by double clicking its icon on my destop. That would give me the connection window, which, in turn would connect me to chosen website. My recollection is that at one time I had to do something to choose the option of going directly to a website other than the default home website, but I don't recall what or how. Now, since the latest revision of MSN, I invariably go to the default home website I have chosen, which is my case is Hotmail, even though I have chosen to open in another website. Is there some way I can arrange things so that I can go directly to the chosen website, rather than first going to Hotmail, closing it and then going to the chosen site? The present situation is particularly bothersome when I have gone to another website and am using it, and then get disconnected. When I reconnect, I lose that website and instead am given the Hotmail website.

2. Ok. I have booted up and connected to MSN and, as noted above, have been given the Hotmail website. I go to the desktop and double click on Outlook Express's icon. I get Out... Read more

Hi, my parent's computer has started acting up again this morning. My mom was on the Internet and everything was fine. Then she opened Outlook Express and it disconnects the computer. The connection box then opens. When I looked in connections from the options tab, it doesn't show any of the 3 connections available.

They are running Win XP Pro. I don't know how to check the version of Outlook Express without it disconnecting me. Also, I ran Norton LiveUpdate and it's a different update box than I'm used to. Have they changed the usual update screen?

A:Outlook Express disconnecting connection

this is just a long shot, but worth a try...

extracted from this page

Disconnects occur after opening Outlook Express
This may be caused by Outlook Express attempting to get Windows to dial when a connection to the Internet is already present. Try the following to resolve the issue:

- on the Outlook Express toolbar select

tools | accounts | mail tab | properties button | connection tab

- check mark the "always connect to this account using" box

- select Local Area Network from the dropdown list.

- click apply and ok

This will cause OE to use the existing connection and not cause a disconnect by trying to dial when a connection already exists.

Running: Windows 98
ISP: Freeserve via Outlook express

My Father’s computer has been set up by a computer ‘expert’ so that when I power up the machine, the start menu fires-up a dial-up network box ie. The machine attempts to connect to the ISP server straight away.
If I allow the computer to connect to the Freeserve server, I can start outlook express, then send and receive mails on-line with no problems.

If I then disconnect from the ISP, to work off-line, ie create the mail then press send, no dial-up box appears but the following error message appears “An error occurred while establishing the dial-up network connection”.

This error also appears when I select the send and receive icon when off-line.

1. I want to remove the dial-up box from the start menu, so the connection is only fired when entering outlook express if desired. (what is the best way of doing this please?)

2. I want to set the computer up so users can work off-line, then send & receive when they are ready to connect to the network.

If I remove the ‘dial-up’ box from the start menu, will this resolve the problem?? Or are there other tick boxes within outlook that need switching on or off?

Any help would be appreciated before I start clicking and poking around and making the issue 10 times worse!!!

Just below that you will see a drop down box "If my computer is not connected at this time:" Select Do not connect.

In the Connection tab, press the Change... button. Select the "Never dial a connection" option.

I have a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 300m laptop. I run Win XP, IE, OE, Firewall, and Office. The few other programs I run are pretty basic, common stuff. I use my laptop mainly for email and internet.

When I connect to public, open, Wi-Fi hotspots, most of the time I can get on the internet and send & receive email with no problem.

However, at about 30% of the hotspots I connect to, I can get internet and receive email but cannot send email.

At about 5% of the hotspots I can't connect at all.

I assume there is a setting somewhere in XP or IE that will fix this problem but I can't find it.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Merry Christmas everyone!

And just when I need to get to send/receive all my Xmas messages, OE starts playing up!

Running Win ME, with IE/OE 5.5.

When I double click on the OE icon it would normally bring up the 'Connect to..' dialogue box and would see a connection made. Now that dialogue box does NOT come up. I am having to connect via double clicking the Internet Explorer icon, get a 'Connect to..' dialogue perfectly normally, and get a good connection. Then I can send/receive okay.
On a few occasions when no dialogue appears I have clicked on Send/Receive on the Tool Bar in OE but this seems to cause a lock-up (Ctr-Alt-Del does not show any programs 'not responding') which clears itself after a few seconds. Again, sometimes when no dialogue appears I click on the Close button for OE and the darned dialogue appears allowing me to connect!!!! But then sometimes when I try to open OE a message saying that OE did not shut down properly on the previous occasion will appear.

Also, when I exit from OE and/or from IE the 'Disconnect' dialogue box is not coming up, so I am having to manually disconnect via the System Tray icon.

All in all OE connection/disconnection is a pain in the proverbial!

I have double-checked my Dial-up Networking connections and Internet Options; done a Scan disk and Defrag; run a full virus scan (Norton AV bang up to date); cleared out Temp and TIF folders and Recycle Bin; tried umpteen re-starts; checked MS... Read more

I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP because I was having some problems and I just needed a clean slate. Everything has gone swimmingly except I've noticed that whenever I put my computer into standby mode I am unable to connect check email using Outlook Express. I have no other problem connecting to the internet (I'm writing this after just having come out of standby mode), and Windows is completely up to date as far as I know. I never had this problem prior to reinstalling XP, so it's obviously connected to that. Can anyone help?

Details: Outlook Express 6, Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP, cable modem (Toshiba PCX100U).

EDIT: I just tried shutting down OE before going into standby mode, and then opening it again when I resume and it works fine. That's obviously a temporary solution to my problem, but I'm still curious what's causing the problem.

A:Outlook Express/Standby Connection Problem

Have you checked the mail server address and port settings? In my opinion OE6 is obsolete and you should use Mozilla Thunderbird which is better, more secure and free.http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

IM using windows XP..............

This just started about an hour ago

When I am online, happing surfing (as you do) with Netscape and decide to open Outlook express 6 I get "you arew currently working offline, would you like to connect now" If I click yes, it disconnects the modem and reconnects after a password prompt.

Likewise - if I am using Outlook Express and decide to use IE, the same thing happens

I only have one connection shown in my networks connections window, so Im assuming it is something I have set wrongly in Outlook and IE. Likewise, all the programs are connecting using the connection name.

Any Ideas?

A:Outlook Express and IE insist on opening new connection

It has been a while since I used either of these, since I stick with Mozilla, but you might want to check your settings in OE: Tools/ Options/Connection.

I had dial-up. So I erased the account that I had. I went through the wizard steps of changing to Roadrunner. But everytime I click in to see mail. I get the log in form. I went to tools and clicked on accounts. Then properties in "general tab section" I have Mail account mail.rochester.rr.com. User Information my name, E-mail Address my address. The include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is checked off. then in the "Servers Tab" My incoming mail server is a POP3 server. Then Incoming Mail (POP3) I have mail.rochester.rr.com and in the outgoing mail SMTP, I have SMTP.rochester.rr.com. Then in the "Incoming Mail Server" the Account name has mine and the password is the one they gave me. In the "Connection" section nothing is checked. Should that box be checked and something be in that line. Because it says "Always connect to this account using". It has Local Area Network,roadrunner,rochester.rr.com. In "Security" there only something in "Algorithm this what's in it "3DES". Then in "Advanced it has server port numbers, "outgoing mail SMTP" the number is 25. In the "Incoming mail POP3" the number is 110. Nothing is checked off. News connection I don't have any account put in there. Everytime that login pops up also and I cancel it says that either you are using the wrong password or server name. So what can I do. Because the POP3 trys to scan the mail and sen... Read more

A:Outlook Express Changed Computer Connection

Hi Mary

You may want to double-check your Mail setup with Roadrunner. Phone support is included in their service. The POP3 incoming mail server here in Southern California is simply named pop-server.socal.rr.com --- if Rochester follows the same naming pattern, they should be pop-server.rochester.rr.com [Update - I just checked, and yes, Rochester's incoming POP3 server is named pop-server.rochester.rr.com --- and the SMTP out-going server is named smtp-server.rochester.rr.com]. Your previous settings aren't quite right just yet.

Why not redo your account from scratch. It's not a problem to see a login screen when you first start Outlook. Things are a bit more secure logging in each time. In your Internet settings, however, make sure that any dial-up connections leftover in the "Connections" tab are fully removed.

I noticed you had a malware issue in the HiJack This forums here at Tech Support Forums -- make sure to follow up on that: malware infections will attempt to modify your connection settings & attack your systems security setup. If unsure how to proceed, here's a link to the 5-Step Security Checklist process --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

Best of luck

Is the incoming mail server specified correctly? Has your email provider been experiencing any problems with their server(s)?

I really need some help. I am happy to donate to your favorite charity or this website if I can get these problems solved. First problem is with Outlook Express. I can't send or receive. Error message is :Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes are server problems, network problems or long period of inactivity. I've checked with my high speed internet provider (Cox) and the problem is in my computer, they can't help. My daughter has a separate log on with this computer and I attempted to delete her old OE account and set up a new one on her screen. It appeared to work but when I logged onto my screen, my email no longer works. We're both getting the same error message or a popup asking for a password that just continues to pop up every time we enter the password. There was a message screen about Outlook 2000 during the process of adding the new account and that may be what's interfereing. I believe I removed all of Office 2000 from this computer but not sure. I'm sure the new account is now setup (I did it on Cox's website and used their automated OE setup program) and actually got messages on both our accounts before it started with the error message again.
Second problem is my Lexmark X83 printer. No longer getting a connection to computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times, last installation using the driver from Lexmark's website instead of my disks. I am continually getting a errro messag... Read more

Does anyone know the procedure for configuring outlook express on a proxy connection so that I can acess e-mails from hotmail, yahoo, rediffmail and others?

A:configuring outlook express on a proxy connection

Set Outlook Express to use HTTP as its mail protocol: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/.../oe/setup.mspx

You will need to create a new Account for each mail server.

It is a heck of a lot easier to just use IE.

However, your proxy settings are set in Internet Options, Connections. Tell OE to use your default LAN settings.

I have encountered the following report for each of our email accounts on Microsoft Outlook Express this morning (Here is one of the error messages):

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '[email protected]'. Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number 0x800CCC0E

I can check all the mail accounts via web access, so the problem evidently is with my Outlook Express. Am I right? What can be done about it? Can you help? T H A N K S !

A:Error Msgs - Outlook Express - Server connection

I've moved this to Web and email for more response

Take a look at this:

Even though that's for MSN, where it mentions smtp.email.msn.com see if changing it to smtp.mail.comcast.net. It may/may not work, so you may have to change it back if its doesn't.

Is this just happening when you try to receive emails, sending or both?

Four days ago, when attempting to check email on my computer ( IE ver.
6.0.2; outlook express), my emails stopped loading at the count of 20;
it still stops at 20; with the date of those emails 4days before.
Message says *your server has unexpectedly terminated connection*
with *possible causes* being *network problem*,*server problem* and
*long periods of inactivity*. I am not on a network and I check email
various times thoughout the day, therefore not inactivity. The old Jan. 24th emails prior to #20 still load on OE, but are repeated 4 times. I went to the cox.net webmail site but they do dot have the file I want to delete. Tried changing load time to 5 minutes to create less *inactivity*, but still got same message. I would appreciate any information or guidance on how to get my email going properly again.
Thanks a lot,

Hi Everyone..

Well, I have a friend who has a DELL 4600 with Windoss XP SP2 installed. They're email was working fine then it started coming up with this error:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity......"

Well, I thought it might have been the Nortons Internet Security 2005, that they had running, so I uninstalled the program, which came off fine with no errors or problems. The system seems very responsive now, but I still get the same problem? I can recieve email fine, but I cannot send out email, I still get that error? I still think it has something to do with Nortons Internet Security update or something.. I checked all my settings and they're all correct. I also tried to create another identity in Outlook Express and still have the same problem. I also tried to use ThunderBird and still get that error. There's no Router between the computer and modem (cable) and I ran Nortons before I uninstalled it to check for any virus/trojans/spyware etc..all clean...

I'm thinking that port 25 in Windows itself is closed, as when I tested the modem on my laptop with my friends email settings on my Outlook Express eveything worked great (on my computer)..I could send and recieve. So I'm sure its not the modem or mail server...

Is there anything that can be done to fix this short of blowing Windows out and reinstalling?? Would d... Read more

A:Solved: Outlook Express - Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection

Well, I think I figured this one out...hope this will help others also...

What I did was after uninstalling Nortons Internet Security 2005 from system, I rebooted computer and then disabled Windows Firewall then tested a sent email then re-enabled Windows firewall and email was still able to get sent out , simple as that...I did not re-install Nortons Internet Security, but instead installed NOD32, Zone Alarm, MS Antispyware and I Hate SPam...

Hope this helps someone else down the road..
