I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have a Dell Latitude CPx 500Megahertz pc. I got it second hand and it has worked fine but recently the hard drive locked up and requires a password. I am trying to bypass the password and boot it back up. I do not have any internal floppy or cd rom drives, only a PCMAI card. I am currently running XP Pro on my system. If any one can help either with the password or to jump the motherboard and show me how to do so with a diagram of any sort. I would appreciate it. Thank you

I am loking for a bigger hard drive, and looked at one which the seller had in an xbox. He says the xbox locked it and I wondered what it would take to unlock it

A:locked hard drive

i dont think that there is anything physical different about an Xbox hdd, maybe if you ran a low level format on it, it would allow you to use it then, you will have to have the make/model ie seagate, western digital, etc. and d/l the makers disk utility to a bootable 1.44 floppy disk or burn an iso image to a cd.

My computer was shut down when the electricity went out a few nights ago. As the computer booted up in the morning, chkdsk ran. Windows Vista opened. I eventually discovered that "Access is denied" on one hard drive. I am, however, able to access the drive in Safe Mode.

How do I achieve access?

Thank you,

Is the drive the one with the operating system on it - or is it one used for storage?
If storage, it's a simple matter to take ownership of the contents of the drive:

Taking Ownership - Vista:
Right click on the folder/drive that you want to take ownership of and select Properties
Click on the Security tab, then on the Advanced button
Then on the Owner tab, then on the Edit button
Click once on your account name, then put a checkmark in the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" Then click on OK.
Click OK on the warning dialog about reopening, then click on OK 2 more times to exit the dialog.

Hello so before this problem occurred I attempted to transfer my main drive with Windows 10 on it to a larger drive using the western digital software. After this my computer restarted, and when I tried signed in I would get a flickering screen/black screen with cursor. I tried to boot into safe mode and I was given a white screen with and infinite dots would circle in the center, and blink black every minute. I couldn't do anything, so I attempted a refresh. Once I did that that the infinite blue screen with white dots continued. So I booted Windows off of my Usb and attempted to fix startup problems, and none were detected. Then I tried to refresh/backup, and I was given a message that said, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." At this point I went into command prompt and saw that my two drive were online, but I am unsure how to unlock them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

A:Hard Drive Locked

Sounds like you copied the partition improperly. If you still have the original Drive, use any old version of Paragon Partition Manager. Or any partition manager that boots off a disk or flash drive.

You will have to delete the partition on the new drive, then put both drives back in to the PC and then boot to the Partition Manager. Then you use the function that copies the whole DRIVE, not just one partition. See, if you only copy the Windows Partition, it will not boot, because you also have to have the small partition (100mb or so) that precedes it on the disk.

You can also use Mini Tool partition Wizard from Within Windows. Boot to your original drive, then download MiniHome Partition Wizard (free- Google it). Then pull that up, and tell it to copy the whole old drive to the whole new drive, make sure the new drive is unformatted.

It will start then it will force a reboot, just let it go and it will start the copy during the next boot. Keep your eye on it, it will take several hours. Don't let it complete the boot, shut off the PC after it finishes. Then pull out the old drive and put the new drive in it's place, and it will boot to the copied drive.

I have 2 problems. I have 2 drives, one with Windows and such, and the other with about 1,000 games that my girlfriend plays. She let her grandson on, unsupervised, and the next thing is a trashed system drive.

Unfortunately, there was no way to save it, so I did a format and clean reinstall of XP Home. Goback was on the drive, and there was no way to uninstall it before the reinstall. The reinstall went fine, but the GAME drive is virtually inaccessible. It doesn't show in My Computer, but does show in Admin Tools, Disk Management. However, the drive name is shown as F(F. It should either be D: or F: ( there are 2 optical drives). I can't change the name or drive letter. I get the error "the drive is locked".

I tried Partition Magic, and it will change the info, temporarily. Also, PM shows the drive as *.F It doesn't give any error message, and says the change has been applied, but it obviously hasn't.

I searched this forum for "hard drive locked" and followed suggestions that I had not tried previously.

The smiley replaced a colon; the entry should read F(F.

Sometimes I think I might know what I'm doing, and then I realize, maybe not.

A:Locked Hard Drive

What OS is on this computer? I am not familiar with any software/mechanism to lock out the hard drive. If Win98, create new user and password. If XP, safe mode may not be protected by password. Create admin login in safe mode. Programs exist to crack passwords. Good luck.

So, I was trying to salvage files from my friend's computer when it caused my Windows 8 laptop to crash. It crashed so badly in fact, that I had to pull out my recovery USB. Except none of the recovery options work.

Refresh tells me the harddrive is locked. Reset tells me a partition is missing. I can't use system restore, I don't have a system image (and even if I did I'm sure I wouldn't be able to use it), and startup repair tells me it can't fix my machine.

Now, I'm a wee bit familiar with DOS. Enough so that I feel kinda okay with using some basic commands. Chkdsk by itself says the volume label is Boot and the file system is NTFS, and errors detected in the uppercase file (no idea what this means). Chkdsk /F tells me the drive cannot be locked and it is write protected. However, chkdsk c: says the file systen is FAT32 and there are no issues. (so far it seems somehow the OS system of my friend attempted to transfer itself to my harddrive...?)

List disc says I have two discs. 0 being 931GB, 1 bein 31GB. (I'm assuming 1 is my recovery disc?) Setting disc 0 to active and then entering list partition tells me there are no partitions on disc 0.

So... What to do? Again, I'm a wee bit familiar with DOS. This is about the extent of my knowledge in fact, and most of this I had to look up and research.

I've got a hard drive from an ancient pc of mine with a lot of music on it. I was planning on pulling the drive and giving the computer to a friend, but during the process of cleaning it, I must've damaged the board. The thing won't boot, but I'm not super concerned about it.

The only problem is, when trying to get to my music from my new pc, the old account holding the music was password protected. I can get into the guest account fine, but I lack permission to look at the old admin.

I could just get the board on the old one looked at, fix the problem from there and then unlock the account, but it's a bit worthless for a pc I'm not using.

So, anyway I can get into the slave drive?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

A:Locked out of hard drive

If you pulled the drive as you say, then attach it to your new computer, either as a Slave drive to the Hard Drive that boots the computer or in an external USB Enclosure/Adapter. You do not need to log into an account to access the music that is on an external drive.

Hello, everytime I start my laptop it shows an all black screen with the hard drive model and asks for my password. I know the password and enter it this is no problem but how can I get it to stop asking me for a password everytime I start the laptop? I went into BIOS and it does not let me highlight the hdd password to change or delete it, so I am guessing it is not in bios. Laptop works fine no problems at all just don't want to have to keep entering the pw every time I turn it on. Not sure if it matters but I am using windows 7 ultimate and it's a Gateway ID49c laptop. Thanks

A:Hard Drive locked

it does not let me highlight the hdd password to change or delete it

Possible reason, there may be 2 different bios accounts\passwords, one for general users (with restrictions) and one for admin (with access to all settings).

How was the hard drive locked? Knowing that is likely the key to unlocking it.

If you use an unlocked hard drive you should be able to use your Recovery disks. A Windows 7 installation DVD would find your current hard drive to be just as locked as anything else does.

I don't understand how this is a Web & Email issue, but don't know which forum would be "correct."

Something terrible happened to my computer today. I'm honestly not sure exactly how, but my hard drive locked itself. I was trying to install FL Studio 11, when it kept saying I didn't have write permissions. I thought that the installer might be corrupted, so I downloaded it again. It still had the same issue. I thought maybe it was an issue with Windows 8, so I burned it to a USB and connected my iPhone to iTunes to try and sync some music to it before I restored Windows. Not only did the driver not install, but iTunes closed and said I either don't have read/write permissions or iTunes is on a locked hard drive. Frustrated at this point, I turned my computer off and booted from my Windows 8 install USB. Windows 8 will not install because it says that my hard drive is locked so I can't install Windows 8 on the hard drive. I tried installing it again and the installer said that the temporary installation files could not be copied to the hard drive. I can't boot into Windows now, it just stays stuck at the flashing symbol (I've left it there for about 5 hours now, still nothing). I have a lot of files that I really need for making my music and a lot of unrecoverable pictures, so I really need to get this computer fixed, can anybody help me? I was surprised when Windows 10 was being uploaded last Thursday morning. I was still not sure about 10 and decided to stay with Windows 8 so I declined the upgrade. My Dell started to reload 8. I made a BIG mistake and shut the system down and found out that my unit is now not working. I did not download the Windows 8 disk when I got my Dell and it is out of warranty. I have a friend that works with Dell and he gave me a recovery disk. I can now boot up to the advance options mode. However it will not recover as I am getting either a hard disk lock and or a disk partition error. When I try to do a complete 8 reinstall from the disk it requires a key. My Dell did not have the key listed on the box as I have been told that it was loaded to the bios on the mother board. Dell support has been no help as they had me run a diagnosis and all checked out. They told me to run the reinstall from my recovery disk. When it asked for the key they said my hard drive must be replaced?

I have 3 hard drives, A 500GB InternalA 250GB InternalA 500GB External (USB)On Hard-drive 1, I am running Windows 7. On 2 I am running the Windows 8 Dev Preview, and my external is a backup. I was switching from my Windows 7 to Windows 8 to do some software testing, but missed the bios, so I just held the power button and hard-reset'd the computer, went into W8, did what I needed to do (Even went into my W7 drive and grabbed a file). But when I restarted it went into Start-up Repair and checked for disk errors, it did that for about 4 hours, restarted and just locked up at the stage between the Windows Boot logo and the login screen, (Black screen with a cursor). I left it for another 5-6 hours and nothing happened, so I turned it off and went back into W8, now I cant gain access to my W7 drive, when I try exploring to it, I get a Access Denied warning, when I try to navigate to it using command prompt, I get a Access Denied message. The hard-drive is visible in Disk Management, and the Properties window is usable (Shows actual stats, unlike the properties in Windows Explorer that shows nothing)What can I do to unlock my drive? I don't need it to boot, just would like the have my latest files as opposed to the backup.

Going through a frustrating time. I bought a new better faster system but I had a niggling problem since I had it. It wouldn't auto lock numbers on my key board. Phoned the company up and told me to update BIOS. Simple enough as the Gigabyte Motherboard had a software on the disk. Also I couldn't load Linux on. It was the first time I had come across a computer that didn?t accept .

After trying for hours to load linux and not winning I gave up. This morning went to start windows up and nothing. Just told me the boot was missing. So put in the disk for windows 10 and tried to repair the boot. Told me the disk was locked and for me to reload the disk. After trying different ways and fixing more with command didn't work. I followed this site info http://www.thewindowsclub.com/the-drive-where-windows-is-installed-is-locked
No good and then had a brain wave. I have three hard drives. One I had tried to put Linux on so I started to install Windows 10. I had the same message ref windows hard drive locked even though I had just loaded windows. Why would this hard drive be locked too? I had reformatted the drive. So at a loss as to where to go now. Remember I have been going good through all the repairs and command to fix MBR and reload windows. At a loss where to go now. I will have to contact the company Monday morning but if I can resolve this myself it will mean I will not be without a comp.

Hello everyone

On Thursdy night I saw a popup from PC cillin about a virus. I thought it had taken care of it and I ignored it. I usually leave my computer on and only shut off the monitor. When I got up Friday I heard a few clicks from my computer. There were 17 web pages open and the hard drive was almost full. I shut it down. Later that day I did a search of the Cryp Tap-2 virus and came up with this site.

I followed another posting to get rid of the virus but to no avail. It was a three step procedure with Vundo fix, SD Fix and another program.
The programs said they fixed or repaired but after the last boot the virus was still there.
I also tried these programs in safe Mode, again no luck.

I did another search and ended up at Symantec's site and they said that it spreads through shared files over a network or DSL, and recomended turning off the DSL and not sharing the hard drive. I did that and still no luck with their program either. Their programs said they fixed or repaired but after the last boot the virus was still there I also reran the sd fix program with no sucess.

After the Symantec program did nothing I noticed I could not access any of the files on the lower half of the directory. As of a few hours back I could not access any of the files on the directory.

There are no shortcuts or guarantees when it comes to malware removal. Sometimes it takes several efforts with different tools to do the job. Even then, with some types of malware infections, the task can be arduous. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be successfully cleaned or repaired. This issue will require further investigation and probably the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum. Before that can be done you will need you to create and post a hijackthis log. Please see the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". You may have performed some of these steps already. If you can't perform a step, then skip and continue with the next. In step #9 there are instructions for downloading HijackThis and creating a log. If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator. When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. It was promising as the poster was having the exact same errors as me fro the people recommending fixes as me but in the end it turned out he jut had a faulty piece of software. This is what I have done so fa an had no luck with.

I was running windows 10 but im currently running it from a USB stick.

So I was able to stick a memory stick in my PC hoping to reinstall windows on my second hard dive, but I noticed that my first hard drive wasn't dead after all as it wasn't letting me re format hard drive #2 for what ever reasons so I started browsing the tools.

I have gone through countless forums and tried all of this:

A lot of the forums recommended doing these commands, I got to the last one and it always said this:

I also tried resetting my PC. When I choose to reset my PC but keep the files it says

And with deletng the files

Ive also tried running chkdsk C: /f /r /x and the result was

Though I was able to browse through all the folders on my disk

The latest downloaded thing on the machine was a game, otherwise nothing before that.

Massive thanks in advance,

Tried to do a refresh and the error said it was unable to do so as my hdd is locked.

I am having problems with a Dell Optiplex GX270. There are no add-on cards in the PCI bus or AGP bus. The O/S is Windows XP Pro SP-3 with 512MB RAM. The PC has been operating normally. I shut it down and replaced the two 256MB memory modules with two 512MB modules. The BIOS correctly reports 1024MB of memory. On the next bootup of Windows XP the PC crashed with a bluescreen. After another bootup try with the same result, I reinstalled the original memory. The pc continues to bluescreen on bootup.

The bluescreen reads as follows:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error, restart your computer. If this screen re-appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software in properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you may need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use Safe Mode to disable components, restart your computer, Press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, then select Safe Mode.

So you can't even connect that drive to another computer with a USB to SATA adapter? It blue screens out?

Can you get back to that recovery console and run the command prompt? If so check for errors on the drive.....

Is that a pretty old computer? Reinstalling Windows is always an option. I question the health of that drive. You'll have to get a new drive if it can't even be connected without a blue screen.

I recently upgraded from windows 8 release preview to windows 8 Pro, i did this successfully but after a windows update i tried to boot my computer but it fails. and error code shows up on the new windows boot saying that the hard drive is locked and it cant boot from it. I am unable to refresh or reset the operating system. Luckily my computer also runs windows 7, on a separate hard drive, which i am able to assess the windows 8 hard drive from to get to my files.

Does anyone know what has happened here and how i could fix the problem. I could upgrade windows 7 to windows 8 but i like having a back-up OS for these situations.

Forgive me if I posted in the wrong section, I wasn't sure if the "Crash" section was the right place. Here is what I posted on microsoft and no one has helped me there.

Hi all,

My laptop suddenly turned off because the battery was drained and I didn't have the power hooked up. Upon restarting windows, I got this message

screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/RH3WP.jpg

so I clicked on the troubleshoot option and selected "Automatic repair" and then got this message

screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/GoBqq.jpg

I went back to the main screen and just shut my laptop down again, only to be met with the same "trouble shooting" screen. I then tried to do the "disc image" option and got this message

screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/dlNNd.jpg

since that didn't work, I decided to try the "refresh your pc" (save all files) option

and got this error message

How can I get my laptop working again? I downloaded the upgrade to windows 8 online so I don't have a disc. I can't clean install it, I have a 10 page paper I've been working on for two weeks, that needs to be turned in tomorrow. I can't lose that paper! Please tell me there is hope??

*I really feel like crying, this had to happen at the worse time.

I did a really stupid thing. I loaded a security system on my pc (winmagic) and I failed to write down the password. I was so sure I would remember it. I did not.
when it boots up I can only get to the screen that asks for the password.
If I  hit f1, I  get to some screens I do not really understand about booting from a cd.
I want to wipe off the hard drive assuming that will wipe off the security system that has locked up my hard drive. HOW do i do that? I'd like to wipe the HD and reuse it and then properly install the security software.
I read about dban but that would mean I could "see" the prompts and the wizard. All I can see is the page that asks for my password.
Any and all help gratefully received.

If the computer is an OEM like HP or Dell, they usually have a recovery partition that will take you back to a factory state by pressing a key while booting the computer. What is the make of your computer?
