Dell Screen Brightness Issue - (Fn11/Fn12 works, Able to Scroll Up and Down, but no effect on brightness)

Q: Dell Screen Brightness Issue - (Fn11/Fn12 works, Able to Scroll Up and Down, but no effect on brightness)

I have Dell Inspiron13 7000 series laptop.Everything was working fine until 2 weeks back.
Suddenly I wasn't able to use F11/F12 keys to controll brightness.Even if I clicked I wasn't getting the actual brightness bar.I checked some blogs and youtube videos, which helped me and it fixed my issue.
Suddenly after almost a week or so, I am getting another issue.I can scroll up or down the brightness however it doesn't change any brightness level.Right now it is too bright but I can't change it.
Has anyone been facing this issue or resolved this?
Laptop was in perfectly operating condition before.I have been getting these issues recently after regular windows update.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Another issue with my new Dell XPS 13 (9333 Model) - for some reason, while charging or not, the screen brightness changes without me telling it to do so (it just did it right now while writing this sentance!!).

Any ideas on why this is happening? It's kind of like an auto brightness thing on a smartphone but much more random! It's really starting to really wreck my head.

Any help appreciated no matter how silly it sounds!

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

I've heard that the dell xps 13 has an adaptive brightness issue that persists for many user and Its seems that Dell has provided a fix for the QHD version of the laptop but the fix for the FHD. I am very unhappy owner for a Dell XPS 13 computer (it is a *** computer!).
The latest issue, of many, it is not possible to change screen brightness. I have tried with on patch and one new setting (Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Display > Enable adaptive brightness) but it still does not work.
What can the problem be?

Read other answers

Here's the video, so you can see what I'm talking about. Basically, XPS 13 9360 QHD, has this issue when in a dimly light room, the brightness will be automatically set to the max, and won't be changed by either bios settings (you can adjust brightness level there for battery/AC), latest driver settings, or by keyboard keys.

It'd work normally, but then it'd start going bonkers, but then it'd go back to functioning normal.
Or just stay at max brightness.
I tried disabling DBC, installing latest graphics driver from Dell website, or Intel website using this method, installing latest bios, and other recommended drivers, disabling sensor monitoring service in "services.msc", didn't help.

When I bought my DELL 3521 some weeks ago, which came with OS Ubuntu, I remember the screen brightness was adjustable by using Fn keys ( F4 / F5).
Since I installed Win7 some days back the screen brightness remain very dull ( may be the lowest setting), which I do not mind for my day to day work. But for my photo and graphic work this intensity is far from satisfactory.
I have checked the internet on this and saw many of you also share the same experience. I followed almost all the advices given in there and since there was no improvement, I downloaded all the drivers from the DELL official website for Win7 and installed them.  Actually then one thing happened, that is now I could see the on-screen brightness and loudness control icons or symbols.  Incindentally the sound (speaker) control works fine (Fn/F10/F11/F12), while the screen brightness indication appears without any response to the keys ( actually it indicates the maximum brightness in the scale and when I try to reduce the scale it reduces by scale/point and stays and would not move any further).  However, this has no change in the brightness of the screen, which as I already told, is low.
I have not yet decided to contact the dealer on this matter which could be a small issue perhaps, which I am uanble to come to terms with yet.
I do not know how to solve this problem. Is this a technical issue or a manufacturing fault? Could anyone help me please. Must be very grateful.

I got my XPS 15 9550 with high end specs in August for which I paid a fortune and I have been having screen brightness flickering issue every time I upgrade to the new BIOS which as stated by Dell is an urgent update. The screen brightness starts to flicker every now and then. It is definitely the most annoying thing ever. Every time they release a new update I try to upgrade and see if they have fixed the issue or not but unfortunately, every time I am disappointed and eventually I just roll back to the original BIOS version 1.1.15 which fixes the flickering issue. The sad part is some of the other updates require you to have the latest BIOS in order to upgrade them. Does anyone know when Dell will be actually fixing this glitch?

OK, let me preface this by saying that I repair computers as a hobby, I do know that I'm doing usually.

Given that, I have an issue with screen brightness...

Using FN and F10 does not increase brightness (swap FN with CTRL is disabled in my bios - FN is FN)
The screen brightness indicator when I use the FN F10 key indicates the screen is at max brightness, yet at minimum there is no change in brightness.
My ambient light sensor is disabled so I COULD use the FN key to adjust brightness
I have reinstalled my chipset drivers, flashed my bios and tried damn near everything to get my brightness up.

Currently, my brightness is at minimum, despite my power options saying its full and the onscreen indicator when FN is used telling me the same.

At bootup and in the BIOS I am able to adjust the brightness and it DOES get significantly brighter (and dimmer) when I use the FN keys.

I have scoured the internet and have found nothing relating to my issue as of yet, hopefully someone here can help me out

Side note: I have a Compaq 8710w with Vista Ultimate x64 on it (yes, a legit copy)

All windows updates are done, I have even done what I normally refrain from doing - installing all of the HP / Compaq base software garbage that they like to preload in hopes of remedying my issues with the screen brightness level....

Anyone have any idea what I should do next?

I have been facing an issue with my HP G6 1200TX notebook. Currently I am using O/S Windows 7 Ultimate (64bits). There are two buttons in the keypad, one is for lowering the brightness and other is for increasing the brightness of the screen but when I push any one of these two buttons, it shows an image in the center of the screen as "Sun" shaped having a bar however, it is not lowering or increasing the brightness at all. It seems to be intact. I am really wondering why these two buttons are not functioning though it was working fine earlier. I have checked or read so many articles to fix this issue but did not able to reach up to the correction or final solution. I request you to please let me know what exactly happened with these two brightness buttons. Your any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Having an issue with my main rig with screen brightness. I have a pair of 28" monitors, one connected with DVI and one connected with HDMI. Both run into my primary videocard, which is a EVGA GTX560ti. I have 2 of those as well, but they are normally NOT running in SLI.

The issue is that my primary monitor is much brighter than my secondary monitor. The secondary is so dim that often it is difficult to read things on it. Now obviously I could easily resolve this by increasing the brightness on the secondary monitor, but here's the rub. I dual boot this rig with XP home 32 bit, and in that OS both monitors are exactly the same brightness. Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi, I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 7559 for school, my first laptop ever. It took me about 6 months to finally decide on a laptop, and I'm very happy with it...it's beautiful. But, I've had two problems with the display. First, there is some slight yellow discoloration on the right half, not a big deal, just my ocd, probably just some backlight bleed or something. But the big issue is that the screen brightness flickers constantly. I can only really notice it on the lower brightnesses, but I use those so its a problem. I've tried EVERYTHING. Tons of driver fiddling, power option fiddling. I cant tell if it flickers in the bios screen or lcd bist, but I've disabled both NVidia and intel HD graphics drivers and no matter what I do, it still flickers. This makes me think that this Is a hardware issue. If anyone has some insight, I would really appreciate it. Should I send it in for repair, or just wait a bit as I read online somewhere that the lcd backlight needs to "settle in" for it to stop flickering with takes a decent amount of screen on time. Sorry for the long post, but this is my first pc and I'm a little bit picky about the function of my things. Thanks.

Ok, basically here is my problem.

My screen brightness won't go above 70 on the brightness bar slider.

The reason I know my screen can be brighter is because this JUST started happening recently. (well like three months, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now)

And anyway- heres 'symptoms'

The Windows Mobility doesn't allow the slider to go more than 70

Doing FN + F7 for screen brightness to increase using Toshiba hotkeys thing it doesn't go brighter. (it works but not more than 70)

Right as I am restarting right as it boots up it is much brighter then after like a minute it goes to the 70 brightness mark.

It hasn't always done this.

Is this purely hardware issue with Toshiba? Is this like preventing the screen from being 'too' bright?

How can I get it to 100? On restart right before it dims the screen is much much nicer / brighter... It would be nice to have it brighter all the time..

I could do a system re-install... but I'm right in the middle of my school year and I don't really have time at this time...

Thanks for ideas and help.

Hi guys! Please help me if you have some experience/thoughts with this weird screen issue. From day 1 (when I bought the laptop), there was a brighter triangular region in the low left corner of the screen, starting from low left corner of the screen. In this region, all the pixels were 50% brigher, but--it was a relativly small region (5mm x 5mm) in the corner of the screen (just above Win start icon), so I wasn't proactive with servicing it and just left it as it was. However, the "brightness region/crack" slowly started growing, and, month by month, now it expands from lower left corner to top middle edge. It is a very "geometrical" and triangular region, but some months ago, another independent region started forming more to the bottom center of the screen, which is more circular and doesn't have straight edges. So this has been slowly progressing for the past 2 years. I' ve finally sent the laptop for service, but the guys there said it is a "result of a liquid spill", which is like totally unacceptable for me, well since obviously a) I haven't ever spill anything over it, b) it was there from day 1, slowly growing in size -- would that happen if it is a result of a spill? It seems to me that liquid spill issues are more "organic shape" spots (more circluar, not triangular), and that they are more-or-less fixed size over time, while this one is triangular and grows with time.Obviously if this can be the result of some liquid spill, then I'll have... Beginning today, I opened my laptop from sleep and noticed the display was at its lowest brightness setting. I then tried to restart it to see if that would solve it, no luck. I did some googling and found out it could be a problem with the graphics driver. I then disabled it and enabled it. Now the brightness is at its max settings.

The function (FN) + F4, F5 (the keys to adjust the brightness settings) do nothing. The brightness status will show up on the screen and only change 1 or 2 notches.

I then realized I should have a way to adjust the brightness via the Power Settings in the Control Panel. I even confirmed this with a friend. I should have the sliders to adjust the brightness but I do not. It's very strange.

HP Notebook - TOUCH, ENERGY STARModel #: 15-ac113clWindows 10, 64-bit As of the last couple of days, my laptop's brightness has seemingly been changing by itself. It's been increasing so much that it almost looks like it's in grayscale. The brightness fluctuates every 3-4 seconds or so, becoming extremely bright, and then slowly returning to normal. This happens both while the laptop is plugged in, and when it is not.  I have Googled this using every phrasing I could possibly think of, and have yet to find anyone else with my same problem. I have seen some forum posts about fluctuating brightness, but the responses all said to either disable Adaptive Brightness, or to disable Power Saving Technology in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. In my case, both of these settings were already disabled. I have downloaded both a new screen saver and a new Chrome extension in the last few days, and I removed them both, thinking that one of them HAD to be the cause of this problem - no such luck.  Some comments I've seen have suggested that it might be the battery. For context, I sent my laptop in for repair about 2 months ago and they replaced the battery, repaired the charging port, and sent a new charger cord. I've had no issues with any of the replacement parts. Also, I've done 2 battery tests in the last ~48 hours; the first said everything was fine, and the second said that the battery was functioning properly but needs to be calibrated, whi... Read more

Does anybody else here have a weird issue with the Auto setting on the keyboard backlight where it only works when the auto-SCREEN brightness is disabled?  If both are enabled, the screen will auto change correctly, but the keyboard stays off all the time. It still works with Fn-Space for off-low-high, but no auto enable. If I disable the Auto-Screen Brightness in Windows, the keyboard auto will start working correctly. Enable both, shine a flashlight at the top left of the screen and watch the brightness go up/keyboard turn off. Turn off flashlight and screen goes down, but keyboard backlight doesn't turn back on. Then, turn off the screen auto-brightness and shine a flashlight. The screen will (obviously) stay the same, keyboard backlight turns off. Turn off the flashlight and the keyboard will fade back on within a few seconds. Doesn't matter what version of the Intel UHD driver is installed (23.20, 24.20.100, etc), it does the same. Newest Intel sensor drivers, newest PM driver, etc all installed. SIF has been reinstalled multiple times. Does it in both Win10 Pro/Ent 17134 and 16299. Reflashing the BIOS and ME has no effect, full CMOS clear has no effect, hooking a debugger to the light sensor data stream shows it's changing accordingly to brightness.

Follow the steps below to turn off adaptive brightness:
1) Go to your power settings by left-clicking the battery symbol at the bottom right of your desktop
2) click power and sleep settings
3) click additional power settings then click "change plan settings" next to the power profile you are using
4) then, click "change advanced power settings"
5) Scroll down to Display (click the plus icon) --> Enable adaptive brightness --> then turn it off using the pull down menus.
