X1 Carbon(with adaptive keyboard) speaker not work...

Q: X1 Carbon(with adaptive keyboard) speaker not work...

I cleaned the keyboard of my X1 carbon today, which inevitably involved pressing all keys on the keyboard randomly. Immediately after the cleaning, the speaker can't produce any sound. Headphones work fine. I checked the sound option in control panel, and everything seems to be working normally. The green bar that shows the changing volume of speaker perfectly respond to the system and browser, except no sound is actually produced. It also shows that the sound card is working fine. Does that mean that my speakers are broken? Is there any way to tackle the issue or check the status of the speaker? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,I have a 2nd Gen X1 Carbon (Model 20A8) My adaptive keyboard is not working as it should. The backlight is permanantly on, so I am unable to determine which mode it is in and therefore which button sequence is active. It doesn't matter how many times I press the Fn key, the lights for all options are permanently switched on. Can someone please advise how I can overcome this issue. I have already downloaded the latest drivers etc. Thanks

A friend has an 2nd gen X1 Carbon (20A7), purchased with Win 8.1 Pro, long since upgraded to Win 10 pro."BIOS" as they keep calling it, is latest, GRET54WW 1.31 Windows automatically updated, Lenovo Vantage Auto Updates on. A while ago she "cleaned" the adaptive keyboard, since when, she thinks, it does not work. It is "dead", not even lit up. Note, this may be coincidental. She says she used firm pressure, but I think it unlikely she physically damaged it. Since then on power up a message is displayed: "Flashing Adaptive Keyboard Firmware... Please do not power off!" This stays for perhaps 30s before booting continues. I cannot get to the EFI by pressing enter at this stage, (but can from the OS). Then, all seems normal except the non working adaptive keyboard. Searching the message in quotes, even just the first half: "Flashing Adaptive Keyboard Firmware" produces zero hits. Zero! Looking in Vantage / Lenovo System Update, I saw that around the same time, "ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Package Setup - 10 [64] - V.9.0.0.7" was shown as successfully installed. Suspecting this, I googled how to uninstall, and was led to n1wvu28e.exe. There is however no uninstall option in that package. Further, running n1wvu28e.exe told me that its default install is to C:\DRIVERS\HOTKEY. Although Vantage showed it as installed, this directory had only a single "setup.exe". I ran n1wvu28e.exe which populated C:\DRIVERS\HOTKEY with 21 items. ... Read more

Does anyone have a solutions to getting the FN camera button connected to the Lenovo Settings program from the Microsoft Store in Windows 10?  Since upgrading to Windows 10 when pressing the camera Adaptive key I get an error message that this key combination opens the Lenovo Setting Program.  You do not have the Levono Settings Program installed on your computer.  Well it is installed.  I have installed  the latest Lenovo Hotkey package, Dependency package etc and have never had this button work since upgrading from Windows 7 PRO.  All other buttons function as expected. X1 Carbon 20A7.Any ideas??

The adaptive keyboard on my 2014 X1 Carbon appears to be failing. It regularly registers phantom button presses near the right end that trigger (e.g.) the settings or keyboard backlight depending on which strip is active. When it launches the settings window, it happens frequently enough to interfere with use. I found many suggestions to update the bios, e.g.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-20A7-adaptive-keyboard-phantom-butt...I have installed all updates from Lenovo's System Update (the machine is running Windows 10), so the bios should be up to date. Are there any other software fixes I should try? If it is a hardware issue, is itsomething I can do myself? Based on my current usage I could survive with the strip entirely disabled, but I don't see a consumer-facing way to do that. Thanks.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Adaptive Function Room Keyboard.  It is my work computer, not my fave set-up.  Yesterday, I may or may not have attempted to clean the keys with a damp rag and wahla my key strokes are not anything like the keys they represent.  I have finally gotten into 'safe mode' but I cannot key in my password to reset or restore anything.  UGH.  After 12 hrs, it did work for long enough for me to draft 1 line of an email and then it stopped.  I've rebooted/shut down/etc.  The mouse works fine - as does enter apparently.  Please help.  This is awful timing...isn't it always?!  And the talking adaptive keyboard is simply dumb.  I brush my hand across at least 3x a day and the computer barks at me. Shaunti in Chicago

I am not a fan of the adaptive keyboard either, but some people like it.  It sounds like you got some moisture under the conductive membrane.  Sometimes that sort of thing dries out, but usually it doesn't.  If it really doesn't work, you might try a hair dryer on a low setting.  You might make it worse, but if it really doesn't work, there isn't much to lose.  I have replaced keyboards on those, but it is not a good job for someone who is not experienced.  You start removing things from the bottom, and need to take everything off.  The last part is the keyboard assembly

I'm literally copy-pasting space to type this, and every time i backspace, it turns my volume down. That's because I accidentally dripped some water on my Adaptive Keyboard Strip this afternoon, and now my Fn key is still stuck on, on a hardware level. (I wiped it off mmediately when it happened, shut it down and left it alone, and now it's still like this.)  I know it's probably either busted or it just needs more time to dry out. I'm planning on upgrading to one of the newer Carbons next month anyway (one without this annoying strip!)so i'm not looking for a permanent fix. But my friend and i were going to play some games tonight and i'm worried i won't be able to now. Is there a way to temporarily disable Fn or something? I know you can't remap it the way you can most keys, and i have tried going into BIOS with F10 when i restarted once but i couldn't use the arrows to navigate-- it kept jumping around and i think the stuck Fn might have been the reason. Ialso  tried making sure stickykeyswas disabled. so it's definitely the hardware and the water. thank you!

Hello, I just received a 2nd generation X1 carbon as a gift from my brother (his old work laptop). It was running Windows 7 without issues. Since I'm mostly studying Linux development, I immediately wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Now the adaptive keyboard is firing random key presses (keystrokes) all of the time. It's really quite unusable (WiFi turning on and off, audio on and off, and random function keys getting pressed). Since it wasn't doing this before, I'm confident that this is something I did when I set the machine up for myself. What I did was to wipe the entire hard drive. I removed all of the partitions including the windows restore and other partitions (I can't remember what they were all called, but I seem to recall that they were factory partitions from Lenovo). Once I started Linux, the crazy behavior began (about 5-20 random key presses per minute). But the crazy thing is that behavior also exhibits itself even before Linux boots. If I boot into the BIOS setup, the adaptive keyboard will continue to fire off the phantom key presses (I can tell because I see the keyboard icons changing as well as the computer beeping every time it randomly chooses an "illegal" key). So, that implies to me that it isn't Linux that is causing the issue directly (it may have triggered something, but it isn't, say, an actively malfunctioning driver). A few more data points. If I reset the BIOS (sometimes I have to ... Update:I wiped the drive again and this time installed Win10. The keyboard *seems* to have settled down.I say *seems* because at one point it appears to have registered a screen grab? The system beeped and a moment later it was asking me where to save the screen grab. Beyond that, no random keyboard presses that I am aware of.Of course, the adaptive keyboard doesn't do anything at all now either. I can't get it to change from the default function key row.I took this opportunity to update the BIOS which was on 1.17 to the latest 1.31.I'm going to re-install Linux alongside Windows now to see how it behaves.

Instead it has physical keys... Is this a specific model or done through after market modification? Appreciate your inputs.Thank you.

A few days ago I was prompted to install an urgent BIOS update.  I followed the screen prompts and the system rebooted and flashed the BIOS.  Our company laptops all have Sophos encryption, which requires a separate login prior to booting the OS (Win7).  I've always been able to enter user ID and password information on that screen using the USB keyboard connected to my OneLink+ dock (which is connected to the laptop). Following this BIOS update, I can no longer use the keyboard or mouse (also USB) connected to the OneLink+ dock until the OS boots.  I have to open my laptop, enter my Sophos ID and password on the laptop keyboard, then close the laptop.  Once the OS (Win7) boots, I can use both the USB devices fine.  Interestingly enough, the monitor attached to the OneLink+ dock functions just fine before the OS boots up. I checked BIOS settings and couldn't see anything there that looked odd or out of place.  I also checed Device Manager to see if there were any warnings or issues, and didn't see anything. I tried to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version, but once you are above 1.23 that is not possible.  I did flash to the latest release - 1.27 - but that did not fix the issue. So I'm stuck with a rather awkward login process which was not an issue until this BIOS version was installed a few days ago.  I've reviewed other post for similar issues but have not found anything that points at a solution thus far... Hi there, I have a X1 Carbon purchased last month and predominatly use it on a docking station and thus use external speakers connected to the docking station. When away from home, I usually always have head phones in to listen to music; so I only noticed this problem recently when I was trying to play a slideshow for a presentation without any spearkers connected. My issue is that the left side internal speaker does not work -- nothing plays.  Only the right speakers work, with weird "crackling" sounds when playing.  It uses the Conexant Smart Audio...and I have reinstalled the latest driver, and also made sure that the audio levels are not only set to the right speaker -- I can put 100% for left audio, and make right audio 0% and absolutely nothing can be heard--it's only the right speaker that anything can be heard. Help?  Thank you in advance.

Hi all,
I have a 3rd gen x1 carbon, about a month old.  I am not sure whether it has always done this or not, but when the computer goes to sleep mode with my external bose speakers plugged in, they buzz.  It's the same buzz that comes from the speakers when, for example, I touch the cable contact with my hand or against a piece of metal, but this is the first time a computer has ever done this when it is in sleep mode- the very same speakers did not have the problem on another computer.  And obviously the sound stops when the computer boots up, and no buzzing at any other time.

It's a minor annoyance- I walk away for twenty minutes and realize it's buzzing like crazy and unplug the speakers- but I'd rather there were a fix of some kind.  Does anyone know of one?

HiI own a X1 Carbon Gen 2 thinkpad and wonder if it is possible to replace the current keyboard with a X1 Carbon gen 3 keyboard (with proper mouse buttons), or if it will not fit?I have tried to check the manuals and the connectors seems similar although some things, such as the fingerprint reader, seems different. I have no problem "loosing" the adaptive keyboard and fingerprint reader if I can have all the functionality of the keyboard and trackpoint on the new "keyboard" (i.e. the gen 3 frontpanel).

A:X1 Carbon Gen 3 Keyboard on X1 Carbon Gen 2

I am interested in this exact topic as well. Looks like the Gen 3 keyboards lack the adaptive keyboard - that clear stripe on the top that changes. The FRU for these X1 Carbons seem to be the whole keyboard, adaptive part, trackpad and bezel - they go for 150 USD or so. Problem is we don't know if it will work given the model year differences. A nice alternative would be just to replace the trackpoint. They came close with this one, but it is no macbook in terms of tactile feel of the pad. I really am having a hard time with it and it's been about a month.  Lenovo please help!

I am not certain I've identified the part correctly, but this looks like the French Canadian keyboard for the X1 Carbon Gen 3 (MT-M beginning 20BS or 20BT). If so, I believe the part you need is FRU 00HT302 or 00HN947 (the two are equivalent, just made by different manufacturers). You should be able to find a supplier online - I'd start looking on the Lenovo site for options in your country (click).

Hi, I have a version of Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with really weird keyboard. The left Shift key is smaller (half of the regular sized Shift in other Lenovos) and between the left Shift and the "Z" key there is another button marked with two arrows (arrow ">" on the top corner of the key and arrow "<" below), however it's function is identical to the slash key placed next to the Enter (the one doing "\" and "|"). Rarely I use the slash, and I have never used the "|" line, so I don't need two buttons doing the same thing. But the left Shift I use frequently and it's too small for me. I'd love to remap the useless key with arrows and make it the second left Shift key (so no matter which key, left Shift or the useless arrows key I hit, I get the same effect - Shift effect). In the attachment you can see pic of the keybord, so that you know what I mean. I have no clue how this weird arrows key is named and why the keyboard have two keys with identical role placed in different places and marked with differeny symbols. Please, please, please tell me there is a way to do it. Because user experience now is extremely painful. Thanks

We've purchased about 2 dozen 4th gen x1 carbons, machine type 20fb, and have been having some intermittent keyboard issues with multiple laptops.  At least 3 different units have had problems where the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all.  After power on, we press F12, F1, or Enter to try and access different functions, but they have no effect.  Once windows loads, we still can't type anything.   The first time my tech ran into this, he rebooted a few times and was still experiencing the same issue, he set the laptop aside for me to look at.  When I turned it on, they keyboard was functioning normally.  Later, after loading our image on the computer, he was preparing to deploy it to a user when the keyboard stopped working again. I fired up a new laptop this morning, fresh out of the box, and had the same issue, a non-functional keyboard.  In this case at least, the touchpoint/touchpad didn't work either.  I rebooted, tried to get into UEFI config, and after a couple of more reboots I tried pxe booting, but nothing I pressed on the keyboard seemed to help.  I turned the laptop off and put a note on it that it had a bad keyboard, but when my tech came in and turned it on a couple of hours later, they keyboard is working fine.   I've got one in front of me right now that was working this morning, but now the touchpad/point aren't responding.  Keyboard is working though.  L... I have a new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen.   Every time I turn on or wake up the computer, the keyboard backlight is off, even if it had been on when I had previously shut it down or put it to sleep.  I don't understand why this one feature seems to have no memory and resets to a default of "off" every time.  I can't imagine anyone would want the default to be off, rather than the last setting.   I looked in the Lenovo Settings and the User Guide but found nothing.   Does anyone know how to fix this?   Thanks.

Is it possible to enable this function when low light is detected?  I think a similliar feature is available on other laptops but not sure if its available on the X1C? I know FN + Spacebar will manually turns the backlight on.

AFAIK there's no light sensor so that function isn't available. I agree that it's a good idea. Maybe in the next iteration of the new keyboard.

Hi, i am facing a small issue with my x1 carbon which is the keyboard back-lit. The keyboard back-lit is disabling it self randomly plus when i make restart or shut down the laptop. Is there any solution to keep it lighted on permanently !
