Windows Live Mail - Crashes During Delete

Q: Windows Live Mail - Crashes During Delete

I have two separate computers where I am having the same issue with Windows Live email. About one out of every four times I delete an email, Windows Live Mail crashes and restarts. This happens sporadically when I have an email open and try to delete it by clicking the red X delete button. Seems like a software glitch since the exact same thing is happening on two separate computers (laptop and desktop with Windows Live Mail 2011 and 2012).

I have performed the repair several times with no success. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Should be in the "Sent items" or if failing then it should be in the "Outbox"

Hello all, I've been using "Windows Live Mail" now for about three months on a Win7 HP. No problems at all -
until yesterday when cleaning out my Inbox, all of a sudden, while trying to delete messages, I received an error "An Unknown Error Has Occurred" and I cannot delete the message. every once in a while, a second pop up box appears titled "Windows Live Mail" and it states it's deleting mail, however it just keeps running without doing anything, until I shut it down. I have also begun to have problems opening mail as well!

Re starting the mail program and re booting the pc has not helped the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Windows Live Mail won't open or delete mail

Hello Bret,

What antivirus program do you have installed?

If it includes a email filter, then test by either temporarily disabling the email filter option or the entire antivirus program to see if that may be the cause. Sometimes certain brands or features of antivirus program will interfere with email programs.

One of my computers has 3 or 4 emails that dropped into the junk mail folder in my Windows Live Mail for Windows 7 and I cannot seem to get rid of them.  I have tried to repair it in the control panel, and have tried a couple suggestions and steps from the internet, but I still cannot get rid of them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get rid of it?  Should I just delete the Junk folder all together, and then create a new one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Need assistance to delete junk mail from Windows Live Mail for Windows 7

Nevermind,

I just figured it out by accident.

there was a little 'x' to the right of the junk mail box on the left hand side of windows live, I hovered my mouse over it, and the words, "empty this folder" came up.  I clicked on it, and like magic, the junk emails disappeared.  Woot!

Never encountered this before. Have a friend who works for Northern Trust (financial company). Sent me a couple of e-mails from his NT e-mail address -- which he has done before and I have never had any problems with them. But for these last two e-mails, if I try to reply to or forward either of them, it crashes Windows Live Mail (WLM). I have NEVER seen this happen with WLM before and I've been using it for almost 3 years.

To confirm that it was WLM, not NT's problem, I installed Thunderbird, imported my Inbox from WLM, then tried to reply to one of the messages from Thunderbird. Works fine.

Has anyone who uses WLM or knows someone using WLM that has also run into this problem, and if so, did you/they find out what was causing it?

This is one of the strangest issues I've ever encountered. My e-mail client is Windows Live Mail (WLM), ver. 2009. I use ver. 2009 because later versions (a) convert embedded pictures to attachments when you forward the e-mail and (b) have FEWER features; for example, M$ removed stationery from newer versions and I support a sight-impaired friend who needs that in order to see e-mails.

In any case, I've been using WLM for 3+ years with no problems. . . until a neighbor went to work for Northern Trust. E-mails he sends me from his office appear to have ~4pt. text (barely large enough to read) and if I try to reply or forward them, WLM crashes. Messages from his Northern Trust office are the ONLY e-mails that crash WLM. Below is a copy of the source information in the hope that someone can postulate what's causing WLM to crash. As the red, italic text says, I removed his and my e-mail addresses for confidentiality reasons:

Have a friend who works for Northern Trust. If he sends me an e-mail and I try to reply or forward it, Windows Live Mail (WLM, ver. 2009), my default e-mail client, crashes. Another oddity: The text in his messages come in at about 6pt -- so small they're barely readable. He tells me that's not the way it looks on his screen.

If I open and reply using Thunderbird, no problem. Only happens with WLM.

So what's causing the e-mails from this single source to crash WLM?

Before anybody says, "Update to WLM 2012", I won't do that. WLM 2012 (a) removed the stationery function, which a sight-impaired friend needs in order to read e-mails, and (b) converts e-mails with embedded pictures (when forwarded) into photo e-mails, converting all the photos to attachments, leaving empty picture place holders and the text under them in the body -- totally destroying the e-mail. Ver. 2009 has the stationery feature and does NOT convert embedded pix to attachments. As has often been the case with Microsoft, newer does not mean better.

Thanks.

Hi pageyboy, it should be possible from 'settings'. As you have a Live Mail address, it would have been easier using W Live mail (signed in) then access Gmail with it using POP3.

I'm a borderline tech Luddite esp when it comes to email.

I use two different email names in Hotmail, and I'm satisfied with how Hotmail works.

But I apparently have told my computer to use Windows Live Mail also, under certain circumstances. If I'm looking at a website and it shows me someone's email address as a link, which I click on, to send that person an email, WLM automatically launches. And in particular it automatically defaults to the one of those two names which I almost never really want to use!

What I want, instead, is for the computer to automatically just connect me to my regular Hotmail account and let me type in the message from there.

Obviously, I can just cut/paste the address that shows up as a link, and launch Hotmail myself in a new window, and do it all that way. But I'd prefer if at least part of it were automated, the way the computer seems to automatically launch WLM now.

Is there a way for me to delete WLM entirely (using the usual control panel process, which I know how to do) and just use Hotmail all the time as my email program? Or would deleting WLM have the effect of wiping out my Hotmail stuff also?

A:Are Hotmail and Windows Live Mail the same or can I delete WLM?

Hotmail is the browser version of Windows Live mail, Windows Live mail is what allows you to click on a link and send an email.

You can change the default email account you send from, under options, email accounts.

Anyone know how I can remove them from my email contacts list without removing them from Skype also.

A:Can't delete contacts in Windows Live Mail

somewhere in the settings of skype you allowed WLM to have access, go back into the skye settings and see if you can fix it there.
If not, you might have to remove the contacts in skype, then they should remove from WLM, then just put them back but you still have to go into skype's settings and see where you have a check mark to allow Skype to put your contacts in Wlm and remove the checkmark

Had a buggy issue with Windows Live Mail since I've installed it...the program works fine until I exit out of it. Then it could be a minute, or could be 2 hours, but I'll receive a notice that a Windows Live Mail .dll has crashed.

I had read somewhere that it was due to the feature in Live Mail where the option below was checked.

Upload larger images to the Web when sending a photo e-mail.

According to the post, simply unchecking the feature stopped the crashing...I haven't been as fortunate.

I'm still having issues with it every time it closes. I can leave it minimized and it will work ok, but I like to close it down when I'm not around.
Anyone else experience this and have a fix?

Thanks,
Mike

I use WLM on my Toshiba laptop (see specs below). Yesterday, it started "partially" crashing. I say "partially" because there is no error message, it looks fine on screen, I can read any message I want, and can click reply or forward to open a response or forward. But after entering the addressees, I click send and THEN get an error message telling me the message cannot be sent because there are no addressees in the To, CC, or Bcc boxes. But there is, and it's a valid address selected from my contacts.

I tried repairing WLM. Did nothing. Close and reopen it. Does nothing. The only way to make it work is to reboot the computer, whereupon it may work for a while, but sooner or later does the same thing.

Today a new wrinkle. Was forwarding a message, and wanted to remove the addressees from the original message before sending. Put cursor on first letter of the lines I wanted to delete and held down the delete key to "suck up" the lines. Didn't; instead got an error message that "An error has occurred. . ." Welcome to Seven Forums Uncle Gus. This is often caused by the mail scanning portion of various Antivirus programs. It's possible an AV update caused this. You could try disabling your AV temporarily to see if it "fixes" the problem. You might also have the ability to just disable the email scanner.

I've given up fighting Windows Live Mail [the client-side version] many bugs and have moved on. But I need to get the Contacts, and then the folders/Messages. Every time I attempt a .CSV Export of the Contacts WLM crashes [hangs, spins up CPU, does not resolve itself]. Anyone know the cause or cure for this?

Failing a cure of this yet-another-bug, where is the Contacts store? Anyone know its file Extension? how to safely copy until I can figure out how to extract and use?

Apparently WLM does not like any copies of OE on a system... it monkeys with Outlook Express system files when it cranks up - I guess they share stuff under the hood?.. dunno. Attempts to get answers to these various issues on "Microsoft Answer" are time-wasted, in my experience.

I've been using Win7 64 bit with Windows Live Mail for years. I've sent many emails with photos using the SkyDrive Photo Album feature. On about 6/25/15, WLM started crashing whenever I tried to use SkyDrive. It just disappears, no error message. When I bring it back up, the email with photos is visible in the Outbox, but in a few seconds WLM vanishes again. If I can delete the email in the outbox in the few seconds before it crashes, WLM stays up fine.

I can send the photos as attachments, but of course I have to resize large photos before attaching, quite an inconvenience.

As I said, there are no error messages.

I am logged into WLM.

I scan with multiple anti-malware programs every day. Always clean.

Hi guys, I've searched high and low for an answer but can't seem to find one, so I'm hoping someone here can help.

In Microsoft Outlook, if you open an email you've received and click on the "delete" icon, the email window just closes and takes you back to the main Outlook window. This is an option that you set in the preferences, but Windows Mail either doesn't have it or I just can't find it.

What happens in Windows Mail is that when you click on the delete icon, instead of closing the email and going back to the main window, it just goes to the next email.

Has anyone figured this one out?

Thanks

When you try to delete WLM messages you get this error
"An unknown error has occurred"
and the message cannot be deleted.
People with this problem, often need to delete multiple messages or entire folders. That error appears because WLM only thinks it has that/those message(s), but actually that message is nowhere to be found in the the Windows email folders. The message exists no longer, but WLM still shows it as being in its own folders and you simply cannot delete it using the normal procedure.

For the easier way, one can drag the unwanted and non-existing emails to the Deleted Items folder, one by one. However, that is crazy when you have to get rid of hundreds or thousands of them (yes, I had that situation!).

This is how to trick WLM if you want to delete multiple emails giving you that error:

1. We try to simulate forwarding multiple messages. Select multiple emails by clicking on one and then using SHIFT to click and select multiple concatenated messages. Do that screen after screen (scroll down/up). Stop when you see the FORWARD button has become grey. That means one email is even more stubborn and doesn't even want to be forwarded.

2. Hold the SHIFT key and click the messages up and down until you find the culprit. It will be just outside your selection, when your selection manages to un-grey the Forward button.

3. With a lot of messages selected and concatenated, click on the Forward button. You'll get another error message

I cannot find an outbox, but get a message that there is unsent mail in the outbox. The mail was unsent because of a bad address. I am not sure but that a recent windows update did not change my live mail options.

A:How Do I find and Delete unsent mail in live mail 2011 outbox

Open the Outbox and delete. Outbox is common for all accounts and can be reached by scrolling the left pane as it is at the very bottom.

I've been comparing Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird for several months now. Thunderbird provides a junk mail setting whereby it deletes everything in the junk folder after X days (you set the X). I can't find any option in WLM that does that. Is there one, and if so, where is it?

A:Solved: Set Live Mail to delete junk mail after X days

there isn't one in WLM or in outlook
you do it manually for safety reasons, in case a genuine email gets redirected to junk

**** BACKGROUND INFO ****

My e-mail client is Windows Live Mail Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.0206).

I've used various versions of this software for several years. I use it only to handle e-mail from four different hotmail.com e-mail accounts.

I have set the following safety options:

(1) Safe List Only

(2) Report junk e-mail to Microsoft and its partners

(3) Bounce the blocked messages back to the sender (when I click the "Delete and block" link on messages)

(4) If the e-mail is a mailing list, unsubscribe me from the mailing list (when I click the "Delete and block" link on messages)

My PC is a TOSHIBA laptop (P100-ST9612) running MS Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3, current with all critical updates. Intel Duo-Core CPU T2600 at 2.16GHz and 3GB RAM recognized out of 4GB RAM installed.

**** MY ISSUE ****

When I click the "Delete and block" link on an e-mail message, no e-mail address is added to the Blocked Senders list.

The Blocked Senders list remains empty.

I've discovered that I can manually add senders' e-mail addresses to the Blocked Senders list using the following menu selections.

Actions > Junk e-mail > Add sender to blocked senders list

Security wipe of hard drive, followed by restoring known-good baseline image via Linux boot disk and drive-image software

A:Windows Live Mail "Delete and block" Feature Seemingly Broken

Perhaps, this issue is a function of Microsoft's hotmail.com service versus a glitch in the Windows Live Mail software.

The "Delete and block" link has added e-mail addresses to the Blocked Senders list in the distant past.

I never ever had this issue with Outlook Express. Suddenly, after I tried to delete some messages, I get the above error. I tried to move the messages to my deleted folder, nothing. I tried to move the store folder to another directory, nothing. I even uninstalled and uinstalled Windows Live, same thing. No success.

Any ideas? Workarounds?

I think you have to wait until you get a piece of junk email that was put in to the Junk email folder automatically by WLM. Then open it and choose that option which appears at the top.

I just installed Windows Live Mail. Before the initial start, it imported all my emails from Vista's Windows Mail.

When I wanted to write my first email, it froze as soon as I clicked on the address line. It froze before I even entered the first letter. I restarted and tried to click on the contacts icon left to the address line. It froze and crashed again. When I try to access my contacts directly, it freezes and crashes too. What might be the reason for all that? And what should I do?

Thank you!

Have new HP Win 7 laptop. E-mail client is Windows Live Mail (WLM). Starting perhaps 1-2 months ago, it crashes the system when I click the closing "X" in the title bar. The characteristics of the crash are that WLM appears to stay open (remains on screen) and icons and gadgets from the Desktop randomly appear on top of it. If I try to close it with Alt/F4, get a Win 7 message indicating Win 7 will shut down.

AV is Avast!, but e-mail shield is disabled (does not scan incoming or outgoing mail because am using encrypted [SSL] ports).

Anybody have any idea what's causing this?

Importing messages into WLM creates a "Storage Folders" account which can't seem to be deleted.

I really want to get rid of this and it's sub folders, would uninstalling then reinstalling WLM sort this out?

Any Ideas?

Thanks

A:Unable to delete Storage folders from Live Mail.

Hello ElBeasto,

In Windows Live Mail...

Click on View on the menu bar (Alt+M), and Layout. Next uncheck the Show Storage folders option under folder Pane, and click on OK.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

So November 10th, 2014 I began working with Naathim to clean up the cryptowall on my computer. The only files it got to were my emails so I was quite lucky. After cleaning, I worked with a great guy at Carbonite backup who restored my emails from a backup they had from October that had not been infected. They are an amazing group, even got together a special team to deal with the ransome virus because so many of their customers were being affected. Anyway, I don't work for them but for about $50 a year it is so worth it!!Ok so I have all my restored emails in a folder but I can't remove the emails that are stored on Windows Live Mail. I have two 2 email accounts that Mail downloads to my computer. I was able to delete all the damaged emails from that account but it won't let me delete the ones from the other account. I have tried moving them, deleting them from the original folder where they are stored. When I hit delete, I get an error message that says"A problem occurred while trying to open this message.A problem has occurred. Please try again"I hit OK and it doesn't do anything message is still there. Is this still because of Cryptowall? Is there anyway to remove these messages? There are about 400 that I had saved with info...now I immediately store that info in the right place, LOL!!Any insights or fixes?Original post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/555655/i-may-have-the-cryptowall-20-on-my-computer-please-advise/page-3

There is a lengthy ongoing discussion in this topic: CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense Support & Discussion Topic.Since your original topic was closed months ago, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in that topic discussion.ThanksThe BC Staff
