Touchpad and mouse buttons not working

Q: Touchpad and mouse buttons not working

After having to re-install Windows 7 on my laptop I've found that the trackpad and associated mouse buttons are no longer working. The keyboard works fine. The touch screen works fine. When I inserted an external mouse, it automatically installed the driver and worked without issue.I installed the Synaptics TouchPad Driverbut that didn't make any difference. I also tried removing the battery, holding the power button for 30 seconds, re-instering the power cable (but not the battery) and booting up the latop. It was working fine before the re-install so I can ssume i's not a hardware fault and if the keyboard works the interface cable is also working... Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue and can suggest anything?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If anyone has acces to the connections/schematics for the M4600 touchpad/button assembly, I'd love to see them! For some reason both the right buttons have stopped working. Tried to disconnect/reconnect  the 14 pin "touchpad cable from the mainboard, but unfortunately this did not do the trick. Need to look a bit deeper - so would love to see the schematics or at least the pinout of the connector(s)... (It's a button - how hard can it be to fix... ;-)
Thanks and best regards,

I have a Inspiron 1500, model 3558, with a touchpad oddity. Only about the leftmost ½" of the mouse button acts as a left mouse click. The rest of the button acts as a right click. Since I left-click probably 100 times as often as I right-click, this is very inconvenient. Dell Tech Support was completely useless when I called in. Does anyone know how to adjust this setting, if it is adjustable?

A:Touchpad mouse buttons

You could try reloading the driver for the 3558 touchpad here and then try checking the settings using touchpad properties, but I am not aware of any settings that could change this.On your system do you currently have warranty? It might be that the palmrest needs to be replaced.Best regards,Brad

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 running XP with a few problems. Sometimes there is no display when Windows loads. It is just a blank screen. The same problem occurs booting into safe mode. Sometimes there is a display and sometimes not. It is the same using an external monitor. I can go into setup without any problems so the problem is when Windows loads.

Another problem - the mouse buttons do not work when I am able to see the display. I can move the cursor but I cannot click on anything. I also cannot use Ctrl Esc to access the Start menu. I cannot open any icons or right click to get the properties box. It is the same with an external mouse.

This computer has a virus, Spyware Guard 2008. When I was first given the computer to clean I was able to use the mouse buttons and could see the display. I was not able to run any executables when I tried to install some spyware and antivirus programs. I don't know if the virus was able to prevent loading those programs.

Someone else closed some processes in Task Manager. The problems with the display and mouse buttons may have started after that. Could there be something that I need to enable?

I currently have the laptop booted into safe mode and can see the display (intermittent problem). The mouse buttons do not work. I can move the cursor but cannot click. When I hover over the Start button I get an hourglass. I cannot open Task Manager.

I don't think this is a hardware problem.

Are there any suggestions? Thanks ... Read more

A:Display and Mouse/Touchpad Buttons Problems

I should add that I might take the harddrive out and connect it to another computer and access it that way. I should be able to run antivirus software on the laptop drive.

I'm still not sure how I would fix the problems with the mouse buttons and display accessing it from another computer.

ideally, i would like for any mouseclicks and menu opening commands made within X microseconds of a keystroke to be discarded, with the user setting the value of X.

for the record, i'm working on a laptop (2730p) which has mousebuttons and menu buttons quite close to the typing keys, and i have on occassion overwritten entire paragraphs and somehow even issued a close program command while furiously typing. needless to say, i would like a fix for this.

Hi there, first off, I'd like to say that I am using a Dell XPS l502x. Yesterday I was cleaning my keyboard and palmrest, and i think some liquid got inside the mouse buttons and the power button, because they malfunction now. The mouse buttons do not work, and the power button only works when I press it sometimes. When I do press the mouse buttons, sometimes the laptop will go to sleep or on standby. I'm thinking of buying a replacement for the palmrest because it contains both the power button and touchpad, as well as the mouse buttons, but I need confirmation so that I don't end up wasting money if it doesn't work. Is there anything I can do?

This is my first time posting here, I appreciate any help. Thanks .

A:RE: touchpad buttons not working.

What is the exact system model? Are both the left and right buttons not functional? Are these buttons mechanically functional or are they stuck? What is the current OS installed on the system? Does the touchpad register a click?
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A200-27Z. It is a fairly old laptop running Vista but there are no plans to get rid of it yet!

A couple of weeks ago the touchpad and mouse buttons stopped working. There was no lead up to this, just suddenly stopped. This lead to a second issue with my wireless connection which I eventually had to solve by re-installing Windows (I sought help in this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/1125652-wireless-password-not-accepted.html#post8906770).

The fresh install of Windows fixed my wireless issues but strangely the touch pad and buttons still don't work at all. Given that I just installed Windows with all the drivers does that mean this is a hardware fault? And is there a way to fix it or do I now have to rely on the USB mouse?

Thank you in advance for any help,

A:Touchpad and buttons not working

Since you re-installed Windows with fresh install of drivers for the touchpad, chances are good that it is a hardware failure.

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

A:Touchpad and Trackpoint buttons not working

Hi whitehouse87,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.
As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure
I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Yesterday the left and right buttons on my touchpad started to mess up. Clicking the left button sometimes wouldn't do anything and sometimes it would bring up the right-click menu. I would have to right-click something first before I could do anything to it with the left click nearly all the time. The right button sometimes won't bring up the menu and sometimes it will but only for a second. There are also random times where the menu will pop up when I just barely touch the right button.

I've already checked the mouse options and they're all set correctly and also reinstalled the correct driver from Vaio's website and nothing works.

The only thing that's happened when the buttons started messing up was that my computer was badgering me about restarting to complete a few updates. I also watched a movie too though that was about a day or two before, so it might either be something from the update that my computer can't handle anymore or a virus, least that's what I think but I don't know anything so I'm asking you guys.

Hi, My TouchPad buttons are not working anymore. I don't know if the problem is a hardware failure or that the buttons maybe have been disabled by mistake.I have checked the UltraNav settings in the control panel as reset the values to default without any luck.Furthermore I have checked the bios settings which were set to the default values. I'm not using a mouse or any other pointers. Does any one have any suggestion before I return the T410 to the dealer for repair. Has anyone else had an issue with the P50 and the synaptics driver?  If we install the driver from 2016 then the buttons do not work only the mouse cursor. If we delete the driver and let the 2015 driver install then all the buttons work fine.  Install the newer driver from last week and the buttons break again.   All 6 of our P50 machines are doing this that we just got. Hi, whilst on my laptop today for no apparent reason my touchpad decided to stop working properly, it will still move the mouse around the screen, however does nothing when I double tap anything. The left click button has also ceased to work at all, click and nothing the right hand button is working fine.

I have reinstalled the drivers and I am currently using a mouse via the USB port which is working fine. I have also checked the options to make sure that the left click hasn't been assigned to another button or something odd like that. I'm afraid I really am at a bit of a loss as to what could be wrong.

If anyone could please point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks guys

A:Satellite C50-B-189 touchpad and buttons stopped working

Hi, this is due to the pad driver (which is bugged), just kill the process using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC AND THE TAB plus DOWN ARROW to navigate to the target process. I have to do this each starts.

From tomsguide (november 2014):

These fixes don't help, all that happens is, after some time, the touchpad fails again. While Toshiba works on this, I have figured out a quick, effective workaround. This is for my new Windows 8 Toshiba.
Press CTRL ALT SHIFT to get your processes to come up. Find the Touchpad "enhancer" process. End the process. Your touchpad will work fine until next restart at which point just repeat this step.
If you are struggling to end the process without being able to use your touchpad, I found a curious thing out. If you hold a mouse click down, you can move the mouse arrow with the touchpad just fine. Its a bit... inconvenient...but all you need to do this for is to end that process and after that you can use the touchpad normally.

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

I have just upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. everything seems to be fine till now apart from the touchpad.
The problem is that every time I press a button on the keyboard the touchpad stops working for about 4 seconds.
another things is that most buttons do that, but for example the ctrl, function, alt and windows keys don't cause this problem.

Any Idea what can cause this? and do you know any solutions please??
I tried updating the drivers for both keyboard and touchpad, but that didn't solve the problem.
It's very frustrating and I'm considering to goback to windows 7!

Many Thanks :)

I've had my XPS15 for over a year now, and I recently noticed that my touchpad is starting to life off the palm rest area of the machine, and the buttons no longer work. I'm not exactly sure when this happened because I'm a staunch mouse user and hardly ever use the touchpad. Is this an item that can be repaired under warranty? Also, is this a commonly reported problem with this model?

W530 laptop with latest recommended Synaptics driver (, Windows 10. I occasionally play games on my laptop using the touchpad and mouse buttons. Thanks to these forums, I learned that I needed to disable PalmCheck in order to be able to use the touchpad at the same time as the keyboard. Everything works great for my (default admin) account. I set up an account for my son to use so he could play Minecraft with his brother. Though I have more than quadruple-checked the Ultranav settings from my son's account, the mouse buttons refuse to operate when a key is pressed. Interestingly, the touchpad itself DOES respond, it's just the mouse buttons (both R & L) that insist on waiting until all keys have been released. So in summary:* Works fine on my original > 4-year-old account that I migrated from W8 years ago;* Does not work on a separate account I created a couple of months ago. Any idea where to begin with this one? This smells like a funky setting in the registry for my son's account.

I have a Steelseries Ikari Opitcal Gaming mouse. It consists of left, right, 2 more buttons near the thumb area, the scroll wheel (which can be clicked, middle mouse button) and another button just behind the scroll wheel which changes the sensitivity between low and high for the mouse itself.

I have installed the latest Ikari drivers, but let me detail when the problem arose and what I've done as well as what I'd like the final result to be like:

The problem first came up while playing a game, Magicka. As something worth mentioning, comodo antivirus announced that the game wanted to inject input8.dll file or something of the sort. I naturally allowed this, expecting no problems would happen. This may be a key point to the problem, although I can't be too sure.

While playing the game, the middle mouse button stopped working, and that's a fairly core aspect of the game, and for some reason the keybinds can't be changed, not sure why, but oh well - I'm stuck without a middle mouse button and unable to do much about it...

The sensitivity changer is out of the picture as well, sadly. I can't switch my sensitivity back to high, it's stuck by default on low.

Another thing I noticed while this problem was going on was that when i started up i could move hte mouse but click nothing. Even though I'd move the mouse over the taskbar icons in Win7, the icons wouldn't highlight, and the mouse, aside from moving the pointer was virtually useless. I had to open Task Manager to ... A little over a week ago I spilled some water on my Elitebook 840 G2.  I previously had an Elitebook 8470p and spilled water on it several times with no problems at all.  Ever since the spill, my C, D, P, 0 (zero), and ] keys no longer function (kinda sounds like the half-wit brother of c3p0). Also, all 4 mouse buttons don't work (left/right click for both the touchpad and the little pencil eraser mouse on the keyboard).  I can click by tapping the touchpad, and I can right click by tapping touchpad with two fingers.  I'm using a USB keyboard for typing. I have taken this thing apart, including removing the keyboard and the touchpad itself.  Checked it, reconnected it, no difference. My question(s): Suggested parts to fix this would be keyboard and touchpad? Is there a common denominator that would cause those particular keys to go out, along with the mouse buttons (ie, a particular circuit that is damaged)Is there anyway that replacing the keyboard will fix the touchpad? (like do the touchpad buttons have a circuit through the keyboard)?Although I removed the touchpad I never did attempt to get into the touchpad housing or remove the buttons - to clean inside it.  Would that be suggested?  If so, how can I remove the buttons and do that?Aren't these Elitebooks supposed to have spill resistant keyboards?  Thank you!

PS: In case it matters. The Mouse and Keyboard hotkeys did work on my prior PC.

A:Mouse & keyboard hot buttons stopped working

The first thing I'd try is uninstall & reinstall the drivers. Instead of using the disk to reinstall from, download the latest ones from the Logitech site.

Hi, i returned a Dell Studio 16 for another Dell Studio 16 with some lighter configurations. One thing I didn't expect to go missing was the ability to "middle click" and open firefox links in new tabs by pressing both mouse buttons simultaneously.

When i went to Dell's website to update the driver, i was informed via a pop-up that the driver i already have was newer than the one i was trying to update with. so i didnt "update" the driver. The device says "Synaptics TouchPad V7.2 on PS/2 Port" and the Driver Version is I am running Win7 64bit. Thanks.

A:Solved: Middle-Click via pressing both mouse buttons not working

i "updated' to the older driver and it worked.

Have a Dell e6420, running Windows 7 pro.
Mouse in Devices only has PS/2 Compatible mouse, installed automatically.
Touchpad is working, although there are no settings for it in the Mouse options. Impossible to increase sensitivity, and it's really slow. Attempted to download drivers from Dell website, tried touchpad drivers version 6, 7, and 11, none worked.
New mouse was installed, driver installed, Steelseries rival gaming mouse was recognized on the Steelseries application, but no response on screen, and error in the device manager. Indicates missing driver for Rival Gaming mouse. Auto-update doesn't produce anything but continues running, requiring shutdown through task manager.
I'm not sure where to look anymore, any advice would be appreciated.
