Task Bar buttons

Q: Task Bar buttons

Hello,

Every time I boot I have to reset my task bar buttons: "Hide when inactive" "Always show" etc to my choice. The computer 'forgets' each time I turn it off.

Is there some place I can set these so they always are the same?

Thanks,

Bob

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Several times now, when I start my computer, everything seems normal. But when I try and click on the start button, a quick launch button or a task bar button - NOTHING HAPPENS. I just get a ping sound from my speakers.
Sometimes a restart fixes the problem and sometimes I have to turn the computer off and then on again to get it to work correctly.

Does anyone know what could be wrong and what I can do to fix it.

Thanks

I am using automatically updated Windows XP.

The buttons on the Task Bar which represent open windows have disappeared. Re-booting hasn't helped.

The only Task Bar Properties which are selected are KEEP THE TASK BAR ON TOP OF OTHER WINDOWS, SHOW QUICK LAUNCH, AND SHOW THE CLOCK.

I have made no recent changes to the Task Bar settings, nor have I installed or deleted any software.

This occurred, perhaps coincidentally but probably not, after I ran a video sent to me by a relative in an e-mail message entitled "A NEW WORLD IS COMING". The same video was run on a second system, and the result was that the system locked up and open windows were closed automatically when I used CTRL-ALT-DEL, costing me a document I was working on. That problem was resolved, but I still can't get the Task Bar buttons back on this first system.

Suspecting that this was a virus, I went to Symantec and ran an on-line scan. No virus found. I Googled under "A NEW WORLD IS COMING" just to see if anyone had reported a virus by that name and found nothing.

ALT-TAB rotates through open windows, thank goodness, so I can get by temporarily, and there were no error messages involved.

Hi, none of the task bar buttons show up on my task bar when I open a program. I'm not sure but this could be because of the 50 something language bars selected in the tool bars option when you right click the task bar, I don't even know how this is possible or how it happened. Anybody got any ideas?

i have a computer with service pack 2 that all of a sudden when you cntrl+alt+dlt to display the task manager the task manager comes up with no buttons or border what soever.to close it i have to select the taskmanager from the list and shut it down. its pretty odd. just thought some one might have some ideas

A:no buttons on task manager

This behavior can occur if Task Manager is running in whats called "tiny footprint" mode.

If you accidentally double-click the empty space in the border around the tabs, Task Manager switches to this mode.

To switch Task Manager back to its normal display mode, just double-click the top border of the window

Hello all, I'm new here and I have an annoying problem I cant fix.
Here it is, my task manager has lost all of the tabs (applications,
processes, performances, networking and users).
Along with losing all those I've lost the top blue bar and the file, options, view, windows, shutdown and help buttons also.
This has only happened on one of our logins, for our windows XP Home Edition. I really wouldn't have a clue how or why they dissapeared but they have and its quite confusing when things freeze up finding what to shutdown.
This problem has gone on for about a month now and I've had no luck as to finding out how to fix this.
Well thanks for your time hopefully someone out there will know how I can fix this
Cheers

Using Windows XP Pro with SP3. TSG SysInfo output below.

Yesterday, I noticed I noticed that when I clicked left or right mouse buttons on a particular icon in my task bar (or is it the system tray), nothing happened; no menu, no app. No problem with tool bar, nor desktop shortcuts. I didn't worry about it as I could access that app another way, and just thought the system needed to be rebooted. When I was done working on what I had been doing, I rebooted...to a totally blank (except my old desktop image); no tool bar, no start button, no desktop icons...nothing.

I decided to try to see what Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) might tell me. There were the usual 3 applications running, and the typical longer list of processes. Since one of the apps already running was Firefox, I right clicked it, and selected "maximize", did some poking around, and found the best thing at that point would be to do a system recovery. I did to a set point I made the night before, and everything on my desktop looked normal again. But still, the task bar icons were and remain dead.

I had been working on removing old, broken, or otherwise useless registry keys using PC Health Advisor, and did make a back up of the registry before starting the software; I had suspected a virus or malware (used Malwarebites Anti Malware to screen for these, not that I could tell you the difference between malware and a trojan anyway), and wanted to make sure it hadn't infected my registry. Hi,

is there a way to disable the window preview when hovering the task bar buttons? For example, if I have a task bar group with let's say five Internet Explorer Windows and I hover one of them, Windows generates a preview and shows the content at full desktop size.

The only way I found to disable this is to completely disable Aero.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. I've just noticed that most dialog boxes I open are blank (i.e., msconfig), as well as windows with tabs (i.e., msconfig). Even the date and time box! Everything! When I go to more prominent sites such as Facebook, even the buttons on the page are blank!

This obviously was not the case before and has just started in the past 24 hours or so.

I've tried doing some simple research on my own but to no avail. I've found that in older versions of Windows others have had similar issues but seemed to be more isolated to specific programs whereas this effects most things. To solve their issues, they re-registered jscript.dll and that fixed their issue. I tried that, and even though it was successful, it did not solve the issue.

I just finished running System File Checker as well but it didn't locate any issues.

Any help on this matter would be most appreciative. If there is any info you'd like from me, let me know and I will get to you ASAP.

Thanks in advance!

When he opens the user account in the control panel, it's blank.

He is unable to drag and drop, copy and paste, double-click files and open them, and the only thing that you can see in the taskbar are the quick launch buttons. Program buttons appear above the taskbar only if u minimize them.

I have read a lot of other forums about scheduled tasks running twice, unfortunately the hot fix does not fix the issue.

Hotfix
I checked in C:\windows\system32\tasks, the solution is not here.
I also checked in the registry, was not able to find the duplicate task, I was able to find the task in /windows NT
This happens in a very specific scenario.  We have to update the time triggers for a specific scheduled task based off when a store closes.  They close later on the weekends so the 1st task "autoupdate" will look at an xml file to determine
if the store close time has changed.  Since the store close time changes, it then recreates the "store close" scheduled task with the new time triggers found in the xml.  Autoupdate does this by looking at a .config file we wrote.

Unfortunately this config file had an issue with the path to the store close task not being case sensitive.  When the Autoupdate task kicks off, if replaces the store close task with the correct time triggers, but now the store close task runs twice
at each time trigger
Example
We have a task folder \Hello World
The config file paths out to the task as \Hello world (notice the lowercase w).
This causes the time triggers to kick off 2 task, 1 for (\Hello World\Store close) and another for (\Hello
world\Store close)

I got this to trigger 3 times by changing the .config file to path out to \hello
world.  Now every time the time trigger... Read more

I have a task that launches a very simple command line script to lock the computer if it's been idle for 15 minutes.

I can click run and it activates without problem.

If I let it sit for 15 minutes it transitions from the "ready" state to the "queued" state and the history indicates that the task trigger was engaged and the task was queued.

The behavior is identical to a trigger based on a set time, and appears identically in the history, except that for some reason it queues and does not launch in idle, and will launch successfully with all other trigger combinations.

My task manager is unable to load task status/active tasks at startup.

I get the message: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

When I refresh I get the same message.

I checked and found that under Microsoft the problem was in the defrag folder. The same message recurs: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

These messages did not occur earlier. I can't help wondering if I changed the details of the scheduler through the disk defragmenter program and that caused some kind of conflict.

I tried turning off the schedule and then deleting it from Task Scheduler. I tried recreating it in Task Scheduler and ran into some problems (screen shot 5). All these things work fine until I reboot. Then the problem recurs.

I tried running system file check but there were no irregularities found.

I started using the Task Scheduler to defrag the local disk drives, by (creating task) & (creating basic task) from the scheduler console, That's (2) types of task to make sure it works.

Problem: The tasks do "trigger" after modifying settings, but at "irregular" start times and sometimes not-at-all.
I see the (Synchronize across time zones) check box at the (trigger tab), to wonder if checking the box will cause irregular start times.
Question: Is it necessary  to check mark the (Synchronize across time zones) box, to keep idle start times stable?
Example: A 5:00 AM scheduled trigger that starts at 12:40 PM, to say my OS has "bad" calculation to trigger the task.
Anyway, its been interesting testing (automatic defragmentation), even though I think Microsoft has to "perfect" the task scheduler performance more better.

I have two routers I usually connect to (work and home) and each have wireless access. That means there are essentially 4 network locations I have listed. I have merged each respective network location (wired and wireless) into their own singular network location - "Work" and "Home".

I also have set up two tasks; one is set to run only when connected to "Work" and the other, to "Home". The 1st maps network drives and the 2nd disconnects the drives. So essentially when I get to work and log in, the scheduler should attempt to map the network drives. When I go home and log in again, it should disconnect the mapped drives.

Currently if I plug in to a physical LAN connection this works...however if I'm running on wireless, the task scheduler doesn't trigger the scripts! I don't know if this has to do with the fact that I'm using merged network locations and it's only using ONE of the profiles or whether it has to do with something else.

So to summarize, the scripts themselves are working just fine - it's the "Start only if the following network location is available" condition that fails when using 1) merged networks and 2) wireless.

A:Task Scheduler failing to start task with merged network locations

Try recreating the tasks. Sometimes task scheduler glitches. So, just try recreating and post again.

Okay so this problem happened slowly.

First I just recently got internet the day this happened.

Then my computer starts slowing down.

Then applications are not running, saying (null) and that they are not win32 compatible programs.

Then I can't access the task manager, it says it's been disabled by the administrator (Which is ********).

Then my logon screen changes to just a black screen with a plain prompt style logon screen.

Then when I log in it's just my desk top background with no icons or task bar, and I can't do anything, and most times it just immediately logs back off.

It does the same thing in safe mode. I can't do system recovery.

As soon as I logged in I smashed a bunch of keys and got the task manager to pop up and I've been running things through that. I downloaded HJT and have a log here.

This is very urgent, as I have some pretty pricey software on here. I'm a graphic design student with alot of homework and I'm really stressed out right now and would love to get this problem resolved.

Hello.

The attached logs are locked, meaning a password were set on them and therefore I cannot view it.

Anyhow, please run the following tool.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Close any open windows, including this one.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I have a simple .bat file to Robocopy folders and files to an external shared drive for backup.
The .bat runs ok if I launch it.
It does nothing if I launch it with Task scheduler.
I get this error in event viewer. I don't know how to interpret the error.
Any help?

Task Compatibility module failed to update task
"User_Feed_Synchronization-(90573B48-7F1A-49EB-B0E2-630E54FB2F9A).job" to the required status 0.
Additional data error value 2147943732.
Thanks
Frank C

A:Task Scheduler Compatibility module task status update failed

Task Scheduler Actions tab > Edit Actions > Program/Script entry must not be surrounded with quotes It is if you use the Browse button to find your file to be executed.
Mine looked like this:

"C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\System Tools\CopyTask.bat"

I renamed System Tools to System-Tools. I removed the quotes. Now it looks like this

C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\System-Tools\CopyTask.bat

and it works!

I am now trying to get the wake-up user logged on or not combination to work

Hey,
I'm trying to automate some actions on the Internet during night, I got my program written just fine, but one problem still exists. It wakes the PC from sleep mode fine, but never starts connecting to the Internet. It starts connecting when I open the laptop lid, the little blue ring on the connection symbol starts moving. But I need it to connect when I'm not around to open the lid or do whatever it takes. The program is in Python, if I can solve the problem in the beginning of the program.

And second one, how can I make a task based on the event of waking up from sleep? Currently I have it based on the system event of Power-Troubleshooter, event ID 1, which in my opinion gets as specific as it can, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe it's linked to the previous problem, because I want it to wake up in the middle of the night, run the program and then go back to sleep mode.

Main problem is still getting the Internet connected, once the PC is woken up. Thanks!

Hello, I've been seeing a popup in Windows Task Manager the past few days I was wondering if someone could help me fix; When I open Task Manager I get a popup message that says "The Selected Task (0) No Longer Exists." To see the current tasks, click Refresh. (There seems to be 2 tasks because I am clicking the message twice to get rid of it.) When I click Refresh, I see "Reading Data Failed" error messages in the "Task Status and "Active Tasks" sections, and the messages pop up again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

OMG I got this very thing about 2 weeks ago on this "IT" guy's computer. It took some time to figure out but here is the guide I used to help me. Note it takes a lot of trial and error to narrow it down but it's doable.

Hi
I am new to how the task scheduler works. I want to be able to tell the computer to sleep at say 5pm on weekdays and only wake on weekdays from 9am. Between 5pm friday and 9am monday to sleep say after 30mins of idle.
Any help on the above would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A:Creating a task from task scheduler to get the computer to sleep and then wake

Thanks for that.
I found an article that was helpful. Without setting up a batch file.
http://www.howtogeek.com/119028/how-to-make-your-pc-wake-from-sleep-automatically/
The only problem with this is that you have to open a program rather than using a command to suspending sleep. So I may look into using batch files in the future.

I would like to disable Task Scheduler's running of tasks that missed scheduled triggers.  What currently happens is: if the computer is in standby at 7 PM and a task is scheduled for 7 PM, then when I wake the computer up later (for example, at 8
PM), then the task runs.  The task's settings tab does not have "Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" checked.

Is it possible that I use Vista's Task Scheduler as an alarm clock to wake me up? Say if I create a task that instructs the system to play a particular song at a particular time, will Vista wake up from sleep mode, log on my account ( there are two accounts ) and run the program (windows media player) ?

If not, are there any recommended software that does that job?

Thanks in advance !

Hello

Hello all, im hoping that im able to get an answer for this as its been driving me crazy and I cant seem to find an answer anywhere online. On Saturday my PC was turn on, and once logged into Windows Ive found that all that happens is my windows loads into a blank wallpaper that I have. I have no icons, no task bar and I am unable to bringup the task manager (ctrl-alt-del doesnt work).

After leaving for a full hour, it still hadnt loaded and still unable to acess task manager. I tried a load into the last good config and it still loaded into the above. Ive tried loading into Safemode and safemode /w netowrking and its the same story. The only place I have any acess is Safemode /w an active command prompt, although there isnt any icons or taskmanager.

The last resort is to try a repair via the XP CD which i still have, but before i risk messing anything up, id ideally try to fix my PC. Is there any ideas on whats happened? Its Windows XP with Service Pack3. I dont recall installing any updates but I do have it on auto-install anyway. All help is gratefully welcomed!

A:Loading into blank wallpaper. No task bar / icons/ Task Manager

At the blank desktop press CTRL+ALT+DEL start the Task Manager. Go up to File/New Task (Run) in the Run box type explorer.exe and press enter. If that doesn't work at the Run box or the command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and do a System Restore to a time before this happened.

Hello everyone,

I need to have a task run that will move the contents of a folder from one computer to another over my home LAN. Files get downloaded during the night on one computer and then need to be transfered to another. Usually I am doing this by hand, but then though maybe I could get the task scheduler to do it for me.
I understand how to create a task, however I am having trouble with the action tab. I was thinking that I should start windows explorer (where is explorer located for win 7 x64 machines?) under the action tab, but once I do this I am not sure how to tell explorer to check the source folder, select all the files in it and then move it to the target folder.

I took a look through the tutorials of the forum, but didn't find what I was looking for. If you can help or just point me to more resources that would get me going I would be thankful.

Thanks in advance.
Steve

A:Need help creating a task scheduler task to move files over a network.

So you have two computers, A and B.

A gets the downloads and they are in C:\Downloads (for example).

The name of computer A is CompA and the name of the share for C:\Downloads is Downloads.

You want to move them to computer B in C:\Otherfolder (for example)

If the folder names will always be the same then you can use the move command directly from the scheduled task. You set this up on computer B.

Open Task Scheduler
Under Action, Create basic Task
Name: Move Download Files
Description: Move files downloaded overnight from Computer A to Computer B
Click Next
Select Daily
Click Next
Set date and time
Click Next
Select Start a program
Click Next
In Program/Script box, enter: cmd
In the Arguments box, enter: /c move /Y \\CompA\Downloads\*.* C:\Otherfolder
Click Next
Check the results then click Finish

When this runs, a Command Prompt window will open, the move will take place then the window will close. If you want it to stay open so you can see the results, change /c to /k.

If you want this to run when you're not logged on then under the General tab of Task Scheduler, select Run whether user is logged on or not.

You could also set this up on Computer A by changing things a bit.

Read more

I have a secondary computer in the network, which is supposed to stay in sleep mode most of the time. I always wake it up when necessary and put it back to sleep when it is no longer needed. I don't want it to fall asleep by itself during the day, so I set the sleep time to "Never" in Power Settings. However, I want it to automatically fall asleep at 9PM (if at the time it is not sleeping already).

So, in order to satisfy these requirements I created a .bat file containing the following line

Code:
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Standby
and I added that .bat file to Task Scheduler, asking it to run it every evening at 9PM. I made sure that "Wake the computer to run this task" flag is cleared. I also made sure that "Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" flag is also cleared.

However, the next morning when I come to that computer and wake it up for the first time, it wakes up and then immediately falls asleep again. Then I wake it up again and it stays on. Looking into the Task Scheduler reveals that Task Scheduler actually decides to run this task immediately after I wake up the computer, thus putting it back to sleep.

Why does this happen? I believe my set of settings is telling Task Scheduler not to try to run this task if the original scheduled time (9PM) is missed. Why then does it attempt to run it when I wake the computer the next morning? What else do I need to specify ... Read more

I have a Task Scheduled to run at 1am (backup data to a network drive). The first night after I created the task, it ran fine. But then the following three nights, it failed and indicated that it couldn't connect to the network.

I've found this after getting up in the morning and started my laptop up. The network connection is fine when I get up.

Why would it be unable to connect the past three nights but it worked fine the first night and also works with no issues when I wake up in the morning?

TIA!
