Monitor black but turning monitor off/on flashes desktop for split second

Q: Monitor black but turning monitor off/on flashes desktop for split second

Hi, I have windows home 7, home built pc with Asus motherboard. Don't ask me further spec details cuz I have no idea about most of the specs (an ex built it and can't get in control panel due to monitor issue). I just know that it's supposed to be kick-*** with a 5.8 windows score.

The PC boots fine, gives you the option to start windows normally or leave it do its' thing... but either way I try, it makes no difference to monitor.
When it boots, the monitor shows all the usual details, the bios pic, starting... and as soon as it reaches desktop point (I think), it goes black even though monitor is still powered and no errors about no signal. If I turn monitor off and on, it will quickly show me the desktop then it goes black again.

I'd appreciate any help or insight.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, first thing I would try is to connect the PC to another monitor that is known to be in good working order. If the same problem occurs then we will know it is a problem with the PC, if it functions normally you will know it is a problem with your monitor.

For a while now I have a small problem with my desktop and it is starting to annoy me. The following things happen:
-When I start my computer and monitor then the monitor works for about 10 seconds before it turns black. Usually this is just after logging in, but if I don't log in fast it turns black at the login screen. It stays black for a minute and then everything is back to normal.
-Sometimes the monitor thinks it has no video imput in this minute and I have to restart the monitor or computer.
-When my computer has been on a while and I decide its time for a little break I turn off my monitor. When I turn it back on again after 30 minutes the same thing happens.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? It feels like a waste to have a computer that can start up in under 10 seconds and then have to wait for a minute before the monitor works properly.

is that when I first turn it on, it flashes to a black screen a few times; only after I push

Also, sometimes, these first few times it makes a sharp buzzing noise.

Any ideas about what could be the problem?

I connected my new Dell 27" monitor to my HP Pavilion laptop PC on Windows 10 and every few minutes the new monitor goes black for a couple of seconds & the comes back on.  Very irritating when does work or watching streamed programming.  I've tested with both the laptop screen along with the monitor and the PC screen stays on while the monitor goes black periodically. I've tried variations of screen options as well as resetting to factory default & changing the HDMI cord 3 times. Nothing is helping. Is it possible that my HP laptop isn't capable of sustaining the resolution demands of the new 27" Dell monitor?  Any suggestions on resolution would be greatly appreciated.  I've seen this 'blacking out' issue mentioned a few times on this forum & even tried some of the suggestions on those posts but nothing fixes this problem.

The issue started yesterday, I had torun to the store. When I got back I moved the mouse and the screen went black. Turned the tower off and back on, it flashed the vista boot up screen then went black. However I know the computer was running because I heard skype log in. I fixed it by pressing f8 during the boot up screen.

Well the problem happened again this morning, woke up, moved the mouse, black screen. However this time f8 didn't help at all. I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix this. I have windows vista.

I think I'm having a problem with my gpu and think it may be my driver for it but am unsure. When I boot up windows and I first see the desktop my screen flashes for a second (it goes black for about 1 second and then the desktop becomes visible again.) The driver I have for the graphics card is
Nvidia version dated 1/30/2015. I downloaded it from GeForce and they called it Nvidia graphics driver 309.08

I'm running a Gateway LX6810-01 with Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.34ghz processor, MCP7AM01G1 mobo, xfx gf6800gt gpu, Antec vp450 psu, 6gb RAM pc6400, and running windows vista home premium x64.

I'm not sure what that flash in my screen is all about and it seems to only do it that one time when i restart or boot up my PC. I just got this PC as a hand me down from a buddy and have been restoring it to the best condition I can get it to, but that initial flash is driving me nuts and I really think it's related to the graphics card or driver. This PC doesn't have onboard video and there is not any sort of vga or video hook up that comes off the mobo.. it relies soley on a graphics card that I have plugged in to the pcie slot. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A:Monitor goes black for a split second at start up

If I remember correctly, my Vista machine always did that flash thing on bootup. It might drive you nuts, but it might not be a specific problem. It might just be an idiosyncrasy of that train wreck called Vista.

Failing that, it could be a driver issue. Are all of your drivers up to date? Are all of your Windows updates up to date, as well?

A:Fix a monitor that's flashes black red blue green and white

Hello @Jaybird69, Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that your display is flashing in colours. I am happy to assist you with this. When it is shifting colours are you still able to see what is on the screen or is it a solid colour?Have you tried connecting to a different device, or used a different connection or input on the display? Looking at the HP Pavilion w2338h Monitor - Product Specifications, your display supports VGA and HDMI (version 1.3). You can also check out this document for some troubleshooting options: HP and Compaq Flat Panel Displays - Display Quality Issues It would also be useful to check whether the same thing happens if you connect a different display to your computer. Also, please post the full product number and operating system in use on your computer. See the following, if you need help with that information. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit? Please let me know if any of that helps, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Tonight when I was going to load the program FIXIT got it free with my turbotax. I noticed that a new icon that I can not tell what it is, is on the task bar. It flashes orange, when I click it the screen goes black. This icon will not let me open it. If I click on it, screen goes black, click again screen opens up. If I do not click it the screen goes black. I have no idea what it is except annoying. I am using an older dell and monitor. Thank you for your time.

Uninstall the "free" program which in all likelihood involves a registry cleaner that will end up damaging your machine.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my monitor turning black. It seems to happen when watching movies/playing games but it's happened randomly a couple of times just by minimizing a window etc. The monitor isn't actually turning off because it's still bright and the light is still on. My computer isn't crashing as I can still hear sound and If i turn the monitor on and off it fixes it for a few minutes. I hooked up a second monitor and set it to duel view and the second monitor doesn't turn black when the other one does. It seems to be really random. Sometimes happening every few minutes when watching a movie and sometimes not for an hour. I tried reinstalling video drivers but that didn't help and I figured it wouldn't because the other monitor doesn't turn black.

What do you think, anything I can do or is my monitor on it's way out? Thanks.

Hello! When I connect my Yoga 900 laptop to my Samsung external monitor using a USB-C/HDMI adapter, the laptop screen flashes black and the external screen does nothing. Between the flashes I can see my desktop background goes blue and every program/file that is open begins popping up and closing on repeat. Nothing ever shows on the external monitor. The only fix is to unplug the two, but if I let the laptop flash for more than about a minute it eventually goes black. When this happens, unplugging it from the monitor does nothing and it has to be manually restarted using the side button. As noted in other forum solutions, I manually updated all video and chip drivers.I have tested the monitor's HDMI port, the Yoga 900's USB-C port, and the HDMI cable itself. I have also tried a different brand of USB-C adapter. Pressing Windows + P doesn't seem to do much, as I can see the menu between the flashes and click "expand" but nothing happens. Any idea what else I can do? Thank you.

I recently changed the Catalyst Control Center settings (can't remember exact changes) and now my screen goes black for 2-3 seconds at a time randomly. I removed the display driver and Catalyst Control Center and let Windows Update install a new version on a reboot. I've had the card for many years with no problem like this before.

How can I erase the entire video driver/software configuration and re-install it to get back to normal?

Thanks in advance,

A:Monitor flashes black screen randomly with Raedon HD4670 video card

Assuming you have the current Catalyst driver downloaded for your "legacy" HD4670 and ready for use in a reinstall, one clean way to remove all existing AMD software and drivers guaranteed is to use "Driver Fusion" from Treexy (this used to be called "Driver Sweeper").

It comes in a free version, and there also is a non-free premium version. The free version is sufficient to remove everything for the supported audio and video vendors, including of course AMD, nVidia and Intel on the video side.

You click on "Maintenance", and then "Driver Family", then "Display", then "AMD". Follow the "delete" process from there, and when it completes you reboot. You've now completely removed every trace of AMD, including from the Registry.

You can now reinstall your Catalyst driver from scratch.

I got the following email from a friend and have never heard of such a thing..nor can I find anything about this particular problem when I search the net.

"It looks like my monitor is about to go out. At the 2 upper corners, it's just black, and they keep getting worse by the hour. Now I'm getting the same problem with the bottom, it's like a 'creeping' that turns the screen just black at the edges and works its way in. At this rate, it will probably be unusable within the next couple of days."

What might be the problem? He has a Dell LCD. Not sure of the model or how old it is. I'm wondering if its the video card or something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can tell him what to check.

A:monitor turning black at edges

As a representative of Dell, I can safely say your friend should contact hardware warranty support to see if that monitor can be replaced. If this hasn't been taken care of, you can have him use my team's support email here, and have him put ATTN:John in the subject line. I can then check the warranty status on that monitor and see if we can replace it.

The monitor is a Sylvania Pd-80A Flat Panel LCD monitor. It does this behavior even if it is not connected to the PC. I press the power button and it flashes for a second and goes black. The power button light goes from green to orange. I got it used from a friend so I'd rather not spend $50 to find out, "Yep...it's broke!".

I've tried it on 2 pc's with the same result.

Does this sound like a familiar problem to anyone? Fixable?

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

This morning, when I turned the PC on, the monitor only showed a black screen. It was working well last night though. Th PC seems to work normally as it seems like it reaches the desktop part with start menu and all the short cut Icons. I know this because after waiting for a while, I press the windows button then press "U" two times(it's the hot key for shut down and turn off). The light around the power button of the monitor keeps on blinking instead of a consistent light(this thing usually happens after turning the PC on while there's still power on the monitor until the AVR is turned off). There were no beep sounds and such when turning the PC as it never had those kind of sounds even when things are okay.

If this helps, the fan for the video card is still working as other fans as well.

What could be the problem? Video Card? Monitor? Monitor to PC connection? I probably just need to know which is the problem for now.

EDIT: I'm not very knowledgeable on hardware terms and I'm not very good at this stuff as well so I probably won't try to do changes on my computer by my own.

I recently bought a new graphics card to update an old desktop (Dell Optiplex GX270 Mini Tower) with the hope of a mediocre home theater PC. After much research, I bought a HIS ATI HD4350 512MB DDR3 graphics card. However, I'm having trouble getting it to display video.

The power supply is just the factory Dell 250W max unit (14A on +12V). The graphics card company recommends a 300W supply, but everywhere I have read has said that my power supply should EASILY handle this graphics card. I have read about several people using much less (watts and amps) and having no problems. I wish I had an extra power supply to test the computer with, but I don't have one. So this is the next step unless there is something I'm missing (hopefully).

So basically what is happening is that the computer has no problems if I use the integrated graphics and associated VGA output. However, once I put the AGP card into the slot, the monitor acts like it is not getting a signal from either the graphics card or the factor VGA port. The rest of the computer is getting plenty of power and I'm pretty sure that it is fully booting into windows, but the monitor is blank. As far as the card, the fan is spinning and it seems to be getting power but there is just not video output. I've tried the VGA, DVI, and HDMI inputs. I've adjusted the AGP aperture in bios and nothing changed. I've also tried disconnecting everything but the PSU, fan, hard drive, and video card, but... Read more

Hello again.

I recently purchased my parts and monitor about a few months back. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 226BW. It is in good condition and when it works, it works very well.

However, there are times when I start my PC, my monitor will only display content for a few minutes until it just turns black (and other times pink). The power button on the monitor says it's still on and not hibernating or turned off. I would then have to restart my computer to bring back the display. And it always works the second time I start my PC if this problem occurs.

Also, when it turns black or pink, I blindly type the restart sequence (windows key -> up arrow -> left key twice, ctrl+alt+delete doesn't restart my PC). Once it starts to restart the computer, often times the mouse arrow appears in front of the black/pink screen. Just thought it was unusual.

Does any of you have an answers for this? I updated my monitor driver but I forgot if I updated my video card driver to the most recent update. I am going to do that now. But I really want to know if there are any other solutions?

fter upgrading to Win 10 Home from 8.1 and even after clean install of Win 10 Home, I get intermittent almost black screen without cursor. Bought this desktop about 6 months ago. It had been working well for a few months and then a number of issues turned up. Keyboard and mouse would not response at all and monitor is off after the computer wakes up from sleep or fresh restart; wiif is disconnected and no wifi network is shown; the monitor (Dell P2715Q) would suddenly flicker constantly (one second black and a few seconds normal display). These problems can go away if I restart the computer, sometimes once, and sometimes a few times.
I can't remember if this had anything to do with BIO upgrade. My feeling is that it has no connection.
These problems are very ignoring. I shall appreciate suggestions to resolve these problems. Thank you.

Please help!

I have purchased a new graphics card, its an nvidia 8600GT (from novatech) and would like to use it on my LCD tv.
The card works perfect with my monitor but when i plug the lcd tv in, the boot screen apears, and works, until the first windows xp loading screen "should" apear, then goes black, There is still sound through the tv from the pc as the well known windows theme starts and windows should be working fine and i should see the desktop, but its still black!
The tv is a Philips 26PF4310 LCD TV and has Supported display formats :
640 x 480 @ 60,67,72,75Hz
800 x 600 @ 56, 60,72,75Hz
1024 x 768 @ 60,70,75Hz
via a DVI-I
The tv works fine with my other older pc which has an older graphics card, so i know the tv isnt broken.
To make things weirder, the lcd tv did make it into windows desktop at first with the 8600GT until I installed the drivers, and still works when I uninstall them but not to its full potential, as I have to uninstall direct x.

Im guessing its just the settings, but i dont know what and where!
If someone can please help it would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I need some help. I have acomputer monitor that is roughly 10 years old. THe monitor last night decided to suddenly turn off and the power button started blinking. I unplugged the power to the monitor and let it sit overnight. This morning I went and plugged the power back into the monitor and pressed the power button on it. When I pressed the power button the button started blinking again. I have never had a monitor die like this and I would like to know why it died and if it can be fixed. Some more info is that i had only been on the computer for less than 2 hours. I have not spilled anything on the computer, the vent is completely uncovered, and the computer is in good working conditions according to the mannual. I need to know asap please. The tower still works perfectly fine it is only the monitor.

If you could try the monitor on another PC, that would confirm the monitor is faulty. In any case if the monitor is bad and considering its age, it would be best to just replace it. It would not be worth fixing.

Hey There! Welcome to the forum!

I believe you possible mean remote desktop (Microsoft Terminal Services Client) however i dont think you can drag files between windows.

The best way of doing it with both pcs on the network would be to open my documents and type in the address bar "\\OTHER-COMPUTER-NAME\C$" that will give you access to the c drive on the other pc depending on Firewall settings.

To find your PC name right click on my computer and click properties. Then click the computer name tab. Your computer name will be shown next to 'Full Computer Name:'

The problem:
Check the example picture I attached (Welcome_screen.JPG). This is my best recreation of the problem using GIMP
When I turn my computer on, the loading and welcome screen are jumbled blocks of pixels,
parts of the loading screen will be copy across the screen, so that the loading bar is in two or three places.
The welcome screen is even more pixellized, and right before the desktop appears, the monitor goes black, it does not turn off, it just goes black.
I can use the keyboard to turn the computer off.
In XP I can use: (Windows key) -> Up -> Enter -> Right -> Enter, to turn the computer off.
The screen has randomly pixellize like this before, (while I am on the desktop or using Wordpad or Notepad , never in a game)
sometimes minimizing the current program fixes the pixellization and other times
the screen would go completely black after pixellizing, but the computer is still on and working, so I have to power it off.

The parameters:
Desktop - Dell Dimension 5100
OS - XP Home, Media Center Edition, SP3 (updated from SP2 about four months ago)
GPU - Radeon X300, and integrated graphics which are disabled I can't be enabled unless I can see the screen, which I can not.
PSU - stock Dell, 305W

+12VA = 18A
+12VB = 18A

I take it your system has a dedicated card while your motherboard has integrated video. Is the integrated video disabled in the BIOS? If not, do so. My question is based on what you gave: "May not use onboard video with add in video device."

Also, that pixillation is information that either the card is overheating or dying. But do the above first.

It's working fine like 10-20-30 minutes and then it's turning off (for no reason) while the cumputer is running and the flash/button goes pink. I don't know what's this colour stands for. Blue is when the monitor is active, yellow is when the monitor is turn to sleep and when i shut down my computer, but PINK? What's that, anyone?

The monitor is turning OFF, not in a sleep mode or something.
I must remove the cable and push back in every 20 minutes. That's wrong.

Maybe it's the cabel, maybe something with drivers and stuff...i don't know.

please anyone....it's my moms monitor and she's gonna kill me, i blew it up.

The monitor screen is black. From the internet, it might be following issue:1. RAM not working correctly.2. CMOS setting issue. Need to flash BIOS. However, I had tried the following ways but it was not working.1. Exchange the RAM with another same model desktop. Another desktop is working fine with both of the RAM.2. Exchange the power supply. Another desktop is working fine with both of the power supply.3. Exchange the harddisk. Another desktop is working fine with both of the harddisk.4. Press F1 to get into the Setup Utility page but not able to do so as the screen is empty (Black)5. This just fixed it for me 10 minutes ago:https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/solutions/ht077504    1 Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the system.  Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the system.    2 Remove the system cover.    3 Locate the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper on the system board.  See ?Locating parts on the system board?.    4 Remove any parts and disconnect any cables that might prevent access to the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper.    5 Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3).    6 Reinstall any parts and reconnect any cables that have been removed or disconnected.    7 Reinstall the system cover and reconnect the power cords for the system and monitor.    8 Turn on the system and then insert the original POST and BIOS update (flash update) disc into the optical drive.  The recovery session will take two to three minutes to begin.  During this time, a warning message will be displayed and no action is needed from the user.    9After the recovery session is completed, there will be no video, and the system will automatically turn off.    10 Repeat Step 1 through Step 4.    11 Move the jumper back to the standard positi... Running XP. Dell Monitor P991. Monitor will flash to black, you can barely see the desk top in the back ground. You can see it jump from side to side as if it is trying to center itself on the screen them it will come back on. It will do this about every 3 or 4 seconds. The desktop lacks about a quarter of a inch filling up the screen. Sure could use some advice. Thank You.

A:Monitor Flashes off & on

Have you checked the connectors and made sure they are tight?

Also try another monitor to determine if the problem is with the monitor or the graphic interface, which may be a card or on the motherboard.

for a while now my monitor has been constantly turning off for `1 second then back on again but does so repeatedly to the point where it is a major pain to use my computer for even simple things like email and Word documents. sometimes it even stays off and i have to restart the computer to have the monitor work again. just recently, after flashing on and off a few times my comp restarted itself, i dont know if thats related. i wanted to know how to fix this or do i need a new monitor. sometimes it seems to be linked to the software because when i open new windows or do anything really on the comp the flashes begin. how do i fix this? any help would be much appreciated

You give no computer specs, monitor specs or o/s. It sounds like the monitor is losing sync.

This is my first time on this site. I have a DELL 4550 .. I have had numerous
Blue Screen crashes over the past 2 months .. DELL replaced my hard drive..
and the crashes continued. after formatting and reinstalling my WIndows
6 times, and after going over the edge a bit DELL replaced my motherboard,
Video card and memory.. ( and that was only because they really didn't know what the problem was). I have not had any severe crashes but my
monitor is flashing on and off a few times a week for a second or two.
I do not have the patience to call DELL support at this time could anyone
explain this.
Further to this.. my system is very clean .. I have a firewall, router,
antivirus and 3 antispyware programs , I update and run this daily.

My monitor is set to power off after 20 minutes of inactivity (via Power Options). After moving the mouse to "wake it up" the screen usually flickers on and off several times until it stays on 1-2 seconds and then stays black. After that, I usually hit the monitor power button to turn it off and then on again and it usually repeats the flickering process until I kill it and restart it again. Usually it works by the third time, sometimes not.
After the monitor remains on for about 5 seconds it usually stays on. It's always after "waking it up" that the monitor flickers. It still does it if I physically shut the monitor off after it's done being used. The monitor power always shows it as being on.

I have been running a dual monitor setup for several years without issue. I was using a 28" Hanns G 16:10 1920x1200 via HDMI & an ASUS 27" via DVI. They were connected to a Zotac GTX 570 and then later to a Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB graphics card.

About a month ago I substituted a 30 Inch Monoprice 16:10 2560x 1600 monitor connected via DVI for the Asus monitor (both MP & HG still connected to GTX 770). In the last two days, the Monoprice monitor has gone black twice. When this happens, all programs that were visible on the now black monitor combine with the programs on the visible monitor. When I open up the control panel, it only lists the Hanns G (still visible) monitor as detected and the Monoprice (black) monitor has to be re-detected. After clicking on "Detect" the monitor returns to normal. This happened once while gaming (Left 4 Dead 2) and once when I wasn't gaming...can't remember exactly what programs were open at that time.

I updated my graphics driver between the time it first happened and the second time it happened. I also used device manager to see if there was an available monitor driver update available, but windows claims that the most current driver is installed and that the graphics card and both monitors are working properly.

I would really appreciate any assistance that can be offered. The 30 inch monitor wasn't cheap and I am hoping that the monitor is not the issue. I have not yet done any trial and error measures such as ... Read more

I am working on my sister-in-law's laptop attempting to connect a 2nd monitor.  I have just replaced her RAM to 8 GIG (factory was 4 GIG)  and thought it would be easy to just hook up this second monitor.  We purchased a DVI to HDMI cable, hook the cable up to the monitor. Make sure there was power to the monitor.  Then I change the display settings to mirror the displays.  The second monitor turns on and shows the display however it in a split second turns black.  Power is still on for the 2nd display however it just displays black.    The graphic card I have in the HP-15 touch screen is the amd radeon (tm) r4 graphics.  I am wondering if I turn off the touch screen ability would it work or if anyone has any tips to get this second display to work please let me know.
