Preferred Solution: ThinkCentre Tiny: add 2nd HDD, increase size of external HDD, 500GB Hard Drive Adapter (0A65638)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: ThinkCentre Tiny: add 2nd HDD, increase size of external HDD, 500GB Hard Drive Adapter (0A65638)

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit (about 100 bucks) can only be used in the the ThinkCentre Tiny Storage Unit Kit which is an external drive enclosure that must be purchased separately (about 40 bucks) that will accept a CD/DVD drive, or a hard drive caddy ( the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit). I would imagine you could replace the 500G 2.5 inch SATA drive that comes with the Adapter kit/caddy for a larger drive, but if you goal is to just add an external HD, It would probably be easier (and cheaper) to just buy an external USB hard drive like this one. [below is the mail i fired off to western digital's tech support]

I have a 'My Book' Essential Edition 500GB external Hard Drive

My WD device is not being properly recognized by my PC [xp]
[it has been working fine since the 5 months i bought it from newegg]
It was working fine, today morning when suddenly a file upload terminated, and i was unable to access my drive.

I got an error message [pic attached]which claimed Drive I [WD] is inacessible. I also notice, that my drive was listed as 'Local Disk ' instead of the usual - '[email protected]_TB XT ' [my given name]

It had happened once before, but as soon as i made sure the usb cable and/or the power cable was firmly attached, it used to work normally.

In this case after the above procedure, there was no improvement. I tried a reboot, but windows did not load [i know ur knowledge base says tweak bios, but i neva had the problem, it always used to load with windows] (western digital's knowledge base)

Windows actually mentioned that my paging file was too small while it was stuck not loading... That was weird since around 8gigs of my C drive is set as a paging file, neways after resetting the paging file settings, i noticed that my pc STILL doesnt recognize my WD.

I have always disconnected my WD using the correct method and b4 today had no reason to comlain. What should i do? I have around 300gigs of invaluable data..[i don think its lost, just inaccesisble i guess.] an... Read more

I have an older Lenovo all-in-one that's reaching the end of it's tolerable life. It's slow, limited upgrades, only supports one small hard drive. But I love the all-in-one form factor. I see the newer iteration ThinkCentre M910z supports SSD for the primary (horrah!) and includes a second 2.5" hard drive bay. What I can't find is what the largest supported storage size is. Can it support a 4TB-5TB drive like the Seagate BarraCuda ST4000 and ST4000? My goal is to have a SSD for OS and apps, big 2nd drive for archiving large video as opposed to having to have an external USB drive perpetually tethered like with my current all-in-one.

Hello. Recently I split my 500GB into two volumes halving it into 250GB for each volume. One volume, which is the G:, is a FAT32 format, and the other "H:" is NTSC. I performed this on a XP, then recently I got my new computer I tried plugging in the external but it only read the FAT32 one. And on disk manager it shows both of them, but the other one is not readable. I then tried it on my other laptop which is also a Windows 7, it didn't show either. I have really important files in there. What can I do? Please help

A:External Hard Drive 500Gb Kingmax Question

Hello tygster, welcome to the forum

I have no idea why this is happening

You could use a live linux CD to allow you to copy the data across to the linux desktop and then format the NTFS partition to FAT 32 before copying the files back to the disc.
Warning because this is a live cd you will not be able to turn your PC during this operation as all files on the linux desktop will be lost.

Got a bit of a strange one im looking for help with please.

Had my WD 500GB external hard drive for over 12 months.

Latley when I go to windows explorer, right click on the drive and left click on properties i get a reading says free space is 273gb. when I try and past something in there, a movie for example, i get an error saying there isnt enough space left. File of the movie is roughly 3gb.

To trouble shoot i tried to past a small picture file and that worked fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

A:Strange problem with WD 500GB external hard drive

Ok been working on this problem since posting question with a friend.

Confirmed its a FAT32 error

opened cmn and ran CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v

when it asks for what drive use My Passport

if it asks for dismount i selected yes

i then received an error saying the volume has inconsistencies so i ran chkdsk e: /f

when that finished i ran the CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v which worked and im now filling up my external hard drive once again!

IMPORTANT - to ensure you dont loose any valueable data on your drive backup before trying this, this worked for my and I cant guarantee this will work for everyone.

Hope it helps someone out there.

My seagate external drive has stopped working. I looked in device manager and it is there and saying its working properly. Its also listed in disk management showing as RAW and read only. I've tried numerous recovery software with no success. Teskdisk reported read error and found no partitions. Easeus wizard recovery scanned for hours and found no files. I have a lot of precious files on the hard drive which I would hate to lose. I do get a window up saying the drive in question needs to be formatted, I know that if I do this I will lose all my data. In desperation I clicked ok for this but even the format was not successful. I have also taken the hard drive out of its enclosure and is now plugged into a hard drive docking station. This made no difference.

any helpful advise?

A:hard drive woes seagate external 500gb

If both TestDisk and Easeus have failed then you may be out of luck. If the data is truly important then sometimes its best to seek assistance from a data recovery firm as sometimes accessing the drive only makes it worse. You could try one of these for that: http://hard-drive-recovery-services-review.toptenreviews.com/

When a drive fails sometimes data recovery is not possibly at all or only through data recovery companies.

This is why backups are so important and why you should invest in a backup drive or online backup in the future.

Hello all, I am at my wits end and i wonder if anyone can help. I have a 500GB external iomega hard drive. I had only used it a handful of times to back up such things as holday snaps and my itunes music and video library. This was basically to free up my laptops memory.
I then plugged into the usb port on my PS3 console and found it was in FAT32 so dragged game saves across to do the same thing for my PS3. I then used it to drag music to my iphone and left it for a week, however now the PS3 wont recognise it and nor will my computer , and i have no idea why not.
There is power to the hard drive via external 12v power source and the blue light on it shows that power goes to it, but when plugged to any other console or laptop it does not show signs of being read.
Any one able to shed light on this and help with an answer?

Hi there,

I recently bought a LaCie Starck 500GB external hard drive in order to transfer some files from Windows to a Macbook Pro. However, I can only put some of my files onto a small section of the hard drive. There are two folders: LaCie and EXCHANGE. The LaCie folder has something like 460GB of free space, yet the EXCHANGE only has around 30GB. Also, I cannot transfer new files from my Mac to the folder LaCie on the hard drive.

So, the two problems: EXCHANGE only having a small portion of the free memory; and the inability to transfer documents from my Mac to the folder LaCie on the hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

I can browse this forum for data recovery methods, but before I jump into that, I want to explain the events that led up to this terribleness.

I've been running this external hard drive on my XP desktop for a little over a year and have had no problems. I've plugged it into numerous other XP computers, several laptops running Vista, and even a few Macs. There have been no problems and I've been able to take files on and off with ease on all these different computers. Today though, my friend just bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista, and with my successful history I plugged it in without any doubts...

...got the "installing new devices" thing, then the statement saying that the device is ready to use. But upon trying to browse the device, we get a long loading process that's halted with a "This device is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?". I've read other people's posts of their similar predicaments, but it seems that it's more of a "I just plugged this into a Mac and now I can't access it" thing. I know Sony has a tendency of ruining everything, but I really have a feeling there's something else involved. Something seriously needs to be done about such a ruin-everything process.

If I was a freaker-outer, now would be the time. Years of work gone to waste.

I have a very frustrating problem and hope someone can shed some light on the situation for me.

I purchased a Maxtor Basics 500GB external Hard Drive STM305003EHD301-RK a while back and after having some niggling issues with it for the first couple of weeks it had been working perfectly, no problems at all. I had formatted it and the drive was recognised everytime it was plugged in. I'm running it on my Acer T650, P4, Win XP Media Centre Edition SP3.

This weekend I was visiting some family and wanted to take my drive with me so we could watch some films and listen to some music etc. Nothing out of the ordinary.

So the drive would have been unplugged for the duration of the journey. (It is not the first time the drive has been unplugged.) It was wrapped in a towel and in my rucsack so it was protected from knocks/impact etc.

After getting to our destination I unwrapped it and immediately plugged it in ready to go. The green light came on as usual. After plugging it in to my brother in-law's laptop (he was running Vista) it loaded up, only to say that we needed admin access rights when trying to go into the music folder?!?!

Ok, so we tried the movies folder. It let us in but wouldn't play any of the movies! But it let us copy one of them over to his laptop which then played perfectly.

After removing it safely I thought it might be an XP/Vista compatability problem and tried it on the home desktop they had.

This time, nothing happened at all. No green lig... Read more

I recently purchased a Samsung 2.5" 500GB USB external hard disk on eBay, and received it just this morning. After a bit of testing I decided I wanted to separate it into two partitions (one for data and one for my Wii games). When I tried to do that using Windows XP's disk manager, it went formatted 99% then returned a plain "Format did not complete successfully", with no additional info. Then the hard drive just disappeared. Windows explorer will not detect it (it will make the "USB device connected/disconnected" noises upon plugging it in or unplugging it from the computer however), and neither will the disk manager, which means I can't simply delete the partition and format again. The blue LED indicating connection between the drive and the computer does blink when I plug the drive in, and then it remains static until I unplug it.

Any help is really really appreciated. I'll gladly provide additional information to the best of my knowledge.

Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... A:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

Hello, I seem to have run into quite a problem. I have a WD external hard drive that uses a power adapter. The power adapter quit working, so I came across another one that had the same input, but a different output. Being in a hurry, I didn't look at the output. I simply plugged it in and the hard drive powered up. About five seconds later it powered off as if I had simply unplugged it. The output for the original adapter was 12V_ _ _ 1.5A. The one I tried using was 20V_ _ _2.0A. I have an identical second WD external hard drive I was running(which is why I tried to find another adapter since this second drive was in use), however I decided to unplug the second drive to use the adapter from it to test it on the drive that stopped working(since it was the right adpater and it was functioning). When I plugged it into the drive, I still got nothing. Could I have damaged the drive? If so, is this fixable? Thank you for your help.

Hi all, here's my problem:

I recently bought a new Lenovo laptop after spilling a little water in the touchpad/keyboard of my old Toshiba Satellite. I think it fried the Satellite's keyboard as I couldn't get the keyboard to respond and the computer was stuck in BIOS mode. As far as I know, the broken laptop's hard drive had no water damage. I took apart the whole thing and inspected everything and there was no water inside the machine (imagine my disappointment when it was dry inside but still broken...)

Anyway, I bought a USB to IDE/SATA adapter with the hope of recovering the data from the broken laptop. Unfortunately I cannot get Windows 8.1 to access the hard drive. It registers the drive in Device Manager and says it's working properly, but no autorun will pop up when plugged in. I checked in Computer Management -> Storage which also shows the drive, but when right clicking it, every single option is greyed out except Help. I can't assign a drive letter, open it, explore it, etc..

The drive is listed as Healthy (GPT Protective Partition). The drive also had a Windows 8.1 install on it. It's a 750gb Hitachi SATA drive.

I tried using the adapter on ANOTHER Toshiba Satellite (not the broken one - a slightly different model) which is running Windows 8 (not 8.1) and I get the exact same problem - device shows up in device and storage manager, says it's healthy, but again, every single option is greyed out and I can't browse any of the folders or access it in any mean... Did you try setting the bios and try to boot off the "bad" drive? If it works, just copy the info you need onto another backup device. Reinstall the info on your new HD after rebooting. You can change your boot order back, but it isn't essential as long as no USB device is plugged in.

Hi broomelodge,

In order to increase your harddrive size you need to get a larger harddrive, or an additional external harddrive. If that's what you mean..

If you have several Partitions (C:\, D:\ etc) you can shrink / Remove partitions and make one larger partition, however you can never exceed the total HDD space without getting a larger harddrive.

Running Windows 7 Professional SP1 on a Dell 1764.

My hard drive is partitioned as follows: C:\ = 99.9gig with 20gig free, D:\ = 365gig with 312gig free. Seeing that my laptop is a Dell, another partition exists with the operating system which could be used to put the computer back to factory settings.

With only 20gigs of free space on the C:\ drive, my laptop is running slow. I've been told the only way to increase space on C:\ is to wipe the drive, re-partition it, and reinstall everything.

A work colleague mentioned that he had used Partition Magic to transfer space from his D:\ drive and add it to his C:\ drive.

Any recommendations would greatly be appreciated.

A:Increase size of C:\ drive

Your system is running slow because the minimum recommendation for Windows 7 32-bit is 16GB of HDD space rising to 20GB for Windows 7 64-bit, while it's thought you need nearer 40GB for a normal installation.

What you would need to to is reduce the size of the D drive on the left-hand size of the drive instead of the right, and then extend the C drive to take up the resulting free space.

Unfortunately, Windows 7's disk management tool is too basic and won't allow you to do that.

You need something like Acronis Disk Director, Paragon Partition Wizard or Easus Partition Manager - just do a search on Google for them.

You might want to check through the tutorials here on WSF as they are a mine of information.

A word of warning, before you start, backup everything including a complete system image before you start.

The properties show a wealth of information about the drive (manufacture date, etc.).
I did the original NTFS partitioning on the XP computer.
I reformatted again under XP (where they still work fine) and still Vista won't accept them.

My two older, 160gb Ezquest external USB drives work fine in Vista, it's just the
two 500gb ones that are not recognized.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi all new to the forums,

I recently installed windows 7 on a 1TB hdd. When I went about downloading programs from the internet and stuff i noticed my harddrive was partitioned badly in that I have 80 MBs of free space on my C drive that has 7 on it and the D drive has the rest of the space.

There doesn't seem to be any way of increasing the C drive using windows tools, I tried unallocating space from D and increasing C but the option is greyed out for C.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I am using a AMD Athlon XP 1.4 GHz with 480 MB RAM tower. I have purchased a 500GB external hard drive. It does appear as the G: drive when I "plug and play" . I am using a high speed USB port. I am trying to drag and drop music files into it and it works for about 30 seconds and then my whole system "Locks up". The drive light stays lit bright red and the computer is unaccessible even after I shut the drive off. I returned it to the company that I purchased it from and was told that it bench tested "OKAY". It still doesn't work. This unit was formatted NTFS. Any suggestions?

A:500GB external drive locks up

I have had this case on my 250 GB external hd. Best thing to do is NOT write anything else, to it, backup the files to DVD or some other location. Re-format it again and copy the files back.
A corrupt file or filesystem may be causing the lockups. I would NOT try a repair unless you want to risk loosing all files on the disk.

Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

Hello there, and thank you for viewing my thread!

After formatting my PC, I have made a fresh back up of all of my data onto my external hard drive (as you do). The problem I have, is that the external hard drive is showing as pretty much full, but there's nowhere near that much data on it!

I did a little bit of digging, and noticed that when I right click a folder on the external hard drive and go to 'Properties' that the size of the file shows as one value and the size on disk value is significantly larger in most cases.

In some cases, both values do not reflect the actual size of the file on my desktop.

The ExHD is in ExFat format, and I'm assuming it's something to do with the way it's formatted, I just don't know how to fix it. I've tried it a couple of different ways, with different 'Allocation Unit Size's, but for how long it takes to complete the back-up's each time I'd rather just ask for help and find out where I'm going wrong.

If anyone could help me sort this out I'd really appreciate it.

I edit a lot of home movies of my daughter, some video files are as large as 10GB so I cannot use the 4GB file size maximum given by NTFS.

Thank you so much!

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

running out of c:\drive space on a 1TB drive that has 5 partitions, would like to move space from 1 partition to increase c:\drive

A:How to increase h/drive partition size in win7

There are a variety of ways to do that - depending on your disk layout. Why don't you post a picture of your disk management. Than we can give you a more intelligent suggestion.

PS: there is an easy way and a hard way. But the easy way requires to run with a free OEM program from a CD. Do you think you could handle this - download the .iso, burn to CD, boot from CD ?? We would give you the links.

It isn't getting enough power, I've seen that happen on connecting some externals to laptops with weak USB ports. Try it on a different computer, but if the same thing happens, you are screwed.
