Weird security/permissions thing happening on XP

Q: Weird security/permissions thing happening on XP

Hopefully there is a simple answer to this curly one!

ALL (yes, I mean all) folders on the hard drive are shown as read only when i do a right-click properties. I uncheck read only, hit apply, and in most cases appears as if the folder and all it's contents are having read only status removed. However when i close properties and reopen it, the read only is back on.
Then when I go and look at the Security settings for a folder (any folder), the only user listed with access rights is Everyone, no Administrator, no Power User, nothing. And all the selection boxes are greyed out - so I cant change a single access setting for anything!!

If anyone has ANY hints at all, I would be most happy. If you need more info, please let me know.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a HP ze4420ca Laptop. This is the first laptop I have owned and until now it has been great, very useful. Yesterday it started doing something weird. I always keep it plugged with the AC adapter (I believe this keeps the battery charging?) anyway I noticed that the light on the front wasn't on (usually a yellow light when charging then it turns green when charged) I discovered that there may be something loose in or around the battery compartment, if I stand it a certain way the light will come on and it will charge it. But the computer is not acknowledging the AC adapter, WHY would this happen?? If I take out the battery the computer does not work at all. It also seems to be busy in the background when I boot up. I am running the Internet off a router. I am running Norton and I keep it up to-date so I am hoping that it is not a virus problem. Can anyone relate to these problems or have a solution or cause/effect. Thanks for any help!!

A:Weird thing happening

Sounds like a loose wire at the battery. Also could be an on and off fault in the cord.

Hey, I was just searching the internet, and something on my computer, I have no idea what it is, has added a link to my pages wherever it says the word "show". I dont know if it is a random word, but I know that the link is most certainly not there. I know this because I made the website. So I would assume that its some trogan or virus that is infecting my pages but only putting a random hyperlink on one word... but everywhere the word pops up, I get the same link to random pages. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance.

A:Weird thing happening on computer... help please?

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi, after a clean install i noticed weird names / groups on my slave drive security permissions after clean install.

There is three of them, with slightly different permissions and cant find any info on it anywhere.

They are:

S-1-5-21-1844237615-20000478354-682003330-1003
S-1-5-21-1844237615-20000478354-682003330-1004
S-1-5-21-1844237615-20000478354-682003330-1005

My admin, system and powerusers groups are there like before...but i dont know about these and if i can delete them.

I think its just the old grouping from the previous install and the unreckonized security descripters the way the new installs sees and sets the security permissions for this drive...there is three of them.

what are they?
can they be deleted w/o harm?

Also, while im on permissions. On the master drive and partition that the OS installs on, is the "creator owner" and the "everyone" group needed???
Im pretty sure the "system" group should always stay.

Thanks for reading

When I shut down windows the screen goes to the shut down page briefly, then back to the desktop. After this it then goes to the shut down window again and this is where it gets strange. It stays at the 'Saving your settings' screen for way too long and just before it leaves this screen the 'S' at the start of the word Saving changes shape, as if being loaded with a different font. I have tried all sorts of scanners, both installed and cloud based, but nothing shows up on the computer. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be and how to fix it? Thanks Skywatch.

A:Odd thing happening.....

Check in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Security Policy, Security Options that 'Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile' is disabled (default).

If enabled that takes a long time.

Also:

You can either temporarilly uncheck all Startup programs in Msconfig, then reboot and try a shutdown to see if one of these is 'hanging'.

If that doesn't help, recheck the Startup entries and under Services, check mark 'hide ALL Microsoft services' and uncheck the remaining non-MS services and try the reboot/shutdown process again.

If that doesn't help, download, install and use 'User Profile Hive Cleanup Service' from Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

My wife has a Toshiba Satellite computer, which has an Windows 10 OS.
Thing`s regarding a certain program on her computer, has us baffled, and this is why I am here.

When she clicks on to "File Explorer", and she selects a file from the folder, a small window appears, asking if 'are you sure that you want to move the file to the recycle bin?". Every time she clicks "no", the same window keeps appearing time and time again. It`s only when she clicks off the "File Explorer" window, that the messages stop. Sometimes, when she does open the file she wants in "File Explorer", it will start automatically deleting the document.

I have used Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, to see if she has anything that is not suppose to be there, but both have come up with negative results.

Can anyone inform me as to what is going on?

Thank you.

I am running windows XP, and lately strange things have been happening on my PC

Desktop icons just up and disappear. The only one I have noticed doing this consistently is my shortcut for internet explorer (IE). When this happens, it the IE shortcut is also removed from my start menu. I believe other icons have disappeared from my desktop as well, because every so often I notice an empty space on my desktop where an icon look like it used to be. It it hard to tell which ones however, because by the time I notice, they are already gon, of course.

My computer also seems slower than it should be at times

I know this all sounds like I have some sort of spyware or virus running on my system, but I have run numerous system scans with Ad-aware and Norton, and come up empty handed.

This is kind of worrying me, so if anyone knows what might be going on, please share the wisdom!

A:very suspicious thing happening on my PC

Try this:

1. Open the Control Panel (Click Start then Control Panel. Now make sure you are viewing in Classic mode). Double-click the Display icon.
2. On the Desktop tab, click on Customise Desktop
3. Under the Desktop Cleanup option, remove the tick from the box which says 'Run desktop cleanup wizard every 60 days'
4. Finally, click OK

Or this:

When you close a window and the computer hesitates while windows "refreshes" all of the Desktop Icons, it is because the ShellIconCache file has reached it's limit of 500 entries.

To stop this run Regedit and open the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and create a new string value. Name it MaxCachedIcons and then set the value to 2000.

Howdy,

I have been having a problem the last few days when I start my computer. Under normal circumstances when I start the computer the Dell logo will appear on the screen and then immediately after the screen will turn blue and both of our user names will appear. I would then click on my user name and Windows would load.

Now what is happening is after the Dell logo appears the screen goes blank except for a small rectangular blinking white light that appears in the upper left corner of my screen.

If the click the mouse nothing happens. After 5 to 10 minutes go by the screen turns blue and the user accounts show up and I am able to load windows.

I have not downloaded any new programs within the last few weeks.
I use Norton Security 2006, SpyBot S&D, Ad-Aware, SuperAntispyware, Windows Defender, Avg Anti Spyware Free, Spywareblaster and Spywareguard as my defense against "monsters". I update and run scans everyday. After today's scans the only things that was found were 2 tracking cookies.

Windows XP Home, SP2, IE-7
Can anyone help me with this dilemma ?

Thank You for your time,

Dennis

I'm trying to figure this out! I run 5 networks that are experiencing the same problem. 4 are with comcast and one is satellite -a company we deal with recently switched to a https server and when a user on my network logs on one time they have no problem but when they go back to that site later they get a page cannot be displayed message until I change the internal static ip address to a different #. This will only work until they log on again then the same cycle starts over. Some pc's are immuned to this in some of the locations. ALL are WinXP home or Pro with SP1 on them. We cannot upgrade to SP2 because of a issue with a vpn software package we use.
Any ideas are appreciated.

A:https:// >interesting thing happening

When you do what you said, does the user 'log off' when they are finished with the https site? Those sites only allow one logon at a time and I'm guessing the site thinks you are still logged on.

On downloading several small files today and saving them to the default directory, the "Save As File Type" box contained, in addition to the correct file extension, a string (obviously the title of an adult movie) with underscores for spaces and a curly bracket thrown in for good measure. I've never had the movie or anything similar on the computer or even seen the title before (honest, Guv!).

The downloaded file scanned OK with with Avira Premium and Spybot, as does this machine, and appeared to be perfectly normal in every other respect but this event worries me. Has anyone come across something like this and is it down to malware?

First in response to CCleaner:Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries require... Read more

Hello,

Okay, so, I have a very frustrating problem. I don't even know how to start explaining it. Just, everything is wrong on my PC. For example, icons will just stop appearing. When I make a new file or folder or something it just won't show. Yet, when I restart the computer it's there. A restart usually fixes it, sometimes it doesn't. Programs won't run correctly. For example WinRAR freezes when I want to extact something and I get "not responding" and can't even close it through task manager in processes. Many other programs are misbehaving as well. I try to run a game and it won't run, but it worked just earlier this week. Same with programs. I try to reinstall them and that doesn't work as well. Installation gets stuck or I get an error or something like that. I really don't know what to do about this, but it's really frustrating. Please help.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack 1. And the weirdest thing is, I formatted just 2 weeks ago.

A:Something weird is happening with my PC

Sorry for the double post, for some reason I can't edit the post above.

Here is some additional info that I just found out:
It some sort of delayed response or something. If I wait long enough (like 5 minutes) doing nothing, everything that I did will happen and then the computer will go back to being normal. That going back to normal happened a bit after I disabled my anti-virus. I'm not sure that was it, but I'm also not sure it wasn't. I will give you more info when I do some more testing.

I'm sorry if all of this sounds weird, but I just don't know how to explain it well. So to recap:
My PC starts acting weird, programs don't respond as they're supposed to, windows explorer doesn't show icons, task manager doesn't want to close programs and other problems. If I wait long enough, all of what I did happens, but it also may be because I turned off my anti-virus.

Did a HJT scan...(posted below); did adaware and spybot; did MS Anti-spy Beta scan; Norton scan; and Spysweeper, with nothing to show...
What happens is this. I freeze when using Internet and my Office Outlook. My task manager will not respond and I can't shut down through that. My Zonealarm keeps telling me I have a systems error and I have to re-boot and my startup says a change has been made and if I agree to it. Then it starts working and internet is ok...What could be causing this? Ok, my friend has recently had a bad run in with some addware and viruses. her computers performance has slowed down dramatically making it hard to do much of anything. Slow loading webpages, slow startup for the computer and other applications, also I ran into problems trying to get Msconfig open (I can get it open but then it shuts down right away...same thing with the taskmanager)...I have run Ad-aware, CW-Shredder, And Norton on it. The Ad-aware found like over 700 addware problems and fixed them; however, there are still a quite a bit left whenever I run the scan. Another problem that is going on is that Norton has found viruses but can't fix them even though I've done the liveupdate right before I run it everytime. So I am posting the Hijack this log on here...! I hope someone can help! Thanks A lot!

A few days ago, I was just playing a game on my pc, and then I went into an IRC channel. One of the power-happy moderators kicked me from the channel, so I just left altogether. Anyways, after that I went to check on the status of my Alienware pc, which I couldn't because there was an error, I then found out I was disconnected from the internet. I thought the moderator might've used some sort of script on me, such as a DDoS or something, so I reformatted my computer. After I restored everything back to the way it was, the connection still didn't work.. I was connected to the router, but I had no access to the internet. Also, there is this annoying pop-up that keeps coming up. It says, "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components.", but I had no idea what that meant, so I just dragged it below the task bar. And when I tried repairing the connection, the message it gave me said, "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed:
Renewing your IP address

For assistance, contact the person who manages your network.

Also the status is "Limited or no connectivity". I tried repairing several more times, but I have no idea what's wrong with it. The wireless network is a public one, but only a few people are on it. It also says "This problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer." Could someone help me get through this prob... Read more

First of all, when my computer starts up, it always asks to either boot in Windows XP or Windows Recovery Console. If you leave it alone it goes on but i press F8 then go down to Start Windows Normally. I'm pretty sure it's not suppose to do this. Also, I got a message about a corrupt or missing file but it was shown too quick and I could'nt catch it. It also takes quite some time to load everything once its turned on. After all the security stuff loads I see a svchost.exe in the Task Manager take up 100% of the CPU Usage thing for a few minutes. Do I have anything to worry about? I saw this on other threads so I thought I should too so I put the results of that HiJackThis thing along with this. I scanned it in Normal Mode if that matters lol. And Thank SOOOOOOO Much for the help. I've been very worried about my computer lately =[

Ok My mom has a dell computer. What I did was move the computer from one location to another. And all of a sudden the video card (ATI Radeon 9250) stopped working. It turns the monitor into power saving mode. So when I plug the monitor cord back into the onboard video card. An intel video card I believe it works fine. Is there a setting that might have effected this or what?

My computer is going completely crazy..

OK.. here is a basic outline of what happened...

First off.. i have a very old computer. It is a 850 mhz AMD with 128mb of RAM -- with an old graphics card -- top of the line about 5 years ago.

a couple weeks ago my monitor died which was also old -- a Sony E500 21" trinitron -- about 5 years old I believe. It wouldn't power up all the way and flashed a light that means it was not working. I tried it on another computer in the house and it still didn't work.

I then got the cheapest Gateway monitor I could find and tried to use this on my old PC. It worked.. but the graphics were really low quality.. and it switched to classic windows style rather than XP.. and the resolution and colors wouldn't go beyond 800 - 600 resolution and 4 bit color. Images would barely display at all.. but you could read text and still use the internet.

THEN after a short time.. Iw as on the internet.. and left the PC for awhile.. came back.. and the montior was in standby.. then I moved the mouse and the montior was even more garbled and seemed to be malfunctioning.. but still somewhat legible... and there was a message displayed that said "mccafee has detected a virus"..

So I shutdown my PC and tried to restart it.. and it seemed normal.. but I could no longer go on the internet. And there was a small error icon that said my cable connection was unplugged... and there was a zonelabs message that said zone abs was trying to a... Read more

Hi charlie1138..

Sounds like you have some Spyware infections.

Do you have any anti-spyware software suck as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware SE Personal Edition? (Both of which are free to download and use)

If you haven't i strongly suggest downloading and installing and running a full system scan in order to locate the dodgy files.

Also, may be an idea to run Hijack This and post a copy of the logfile on the appropriate Hijack This message board so a Spyware expert can have a look at it.

Hijack This can be downloaded at the following website:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Spybot S+D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Adaware SE Personal:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

As you have another PC which works fine, be sure to update the software with the latest available updates before transferring the files across to your 'poorly' PC.

Hope that helps :-)

A:Help please, weird things happening with msn.

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

A few days ago my computer just randomly started opening up programs and windows searches with "///////////////" in the search bar. I assumed it was my keyboard. When I unplugged it, it all stopped. I checked to make sure none of the keys were stuck, and even took it all apart and cleaned it really well. It worked fine for a few hours and then it started doing it again. I would unplug it for a few minutes, and when I plugged it back in, it would be fine for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours before it would start opening up random programs.

I installed malwarebytes, spybot, and hijack this and all scans came back fine. So today, it started doing it again. Even after being unplugged, it would start as soon as I plugged it back in. So I unplugged it and tried using the on-screen keyboard. It was still doing it. I noticed that if I push the F key, the windows search box pops up, and certain other keys would open other programs. So what in the heck is causing this to happen? I'm not able to do anything and was getting ready to replace my keyboard, which I'm glad I didn't waste the money on since it's clearly not my keyboard dying on me. I don't know how to figure out what is causing this to happen. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I know that when you press the windows logo button and the <f> key, the windows search dialog box will display. As well as other programs with other letters. Maybe check and see if the Windows logo button isn't stuck.

I'm having some weird things happening to my computer (Windows Vista), can someone please help me with this? Here are the symptoms and steps I took:

2 days ago - Computer running slow and seems to have a bit of Harddisk activity.
- Did a CTRL-ALT-DEL and opened Task Manager, saw a process named <user>.exe running.
- Tried closing but couldn't not unless you run admin rights.
- Ran Windows Defender and looked at Software at Startup, seems like this file has No Publisher and is located in C:\Users\<user>\<user>.exe. Went into the folder, couldn't find the file. Removed the file from startup using Windows Defender.
- Rebooted computer - file is still there in Task Manager! It reactivated itself on Startup!!! Suspected Trojan/Virus.
- Ran AVG Antivirus. No complaints other than cookies and trackers from websites.
- Ran Spybot. Found some trojan/malware but I can't remember the name. Removed it.
- Rebooted computer. Acrobat Distiller crashes on startup. Dr. Watson crashes on startup. Now there isn't any <user>.exe but now it's tzguuf.exe! Same characteristics as <user>.exe. Same location, but can't find the file.

Yesterday ago - Had to go to work.
- Took my Flash-Drive from my USB port and went to work, where I was using a Mac. Opened it up and saw tzguuf.exe in it (and some other files). Panicked, deleted all those files. Now worried if my Mac is infected??? How do you clean macs???

Most of the processes in Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in XP's Task ManagerCommon system processes found in XP's Task ManagerTop System ProcessesDetermining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process sometimes depends on the location (path) it is running from. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location (folder) than where the legitimate file resides and runs from there. Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. I first became aware something was wrong when I was playing a game and every 5 or so minutes, the game, for no clear reason, would minimize.
I rebooted and ran a virus scan with Norton 2006. Nothing. Still happening.
Another thing I noticed is that it's almost as if my computer will select something outside of the application I'm in, greying it out until I click back on it.
I downloaded Ad-Aware 2007 and found 159 infections. Yay.
So I attempted to get rid of them and the program crashed. Tried again, same thing, crashed.
So I downloaded an earlier version and it only found 59 infections.
Ran Spybot and found 49.
Then I was looking at the Windows Task Manager, and for a while it was spacing out CPU usage spikes like this:

___/==\______/==\______/==\______/==\___
Sorry for the bad illustration =P
Now it seems to be running at 100% usage.
I look now and netcmd.exe is the culprit.

Fluffy,
Have you checked for any updates on your graphics card lately?
Do you have the same problem using another monitor?
Check all cables and then do the above....

Hi there everybody.

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire gaming laptop with:

16GB RAM
INTEL CORE I7-4702MQ 2.2GHZ WITH TURBO BOOST UP TO 3.2GHZ
NVIDIA GEFORCE GT750M
1000GB HDD

It's specced perfectly for gaming and I couldn't wait to use it. However, my FPS in Team Fortress 2 and World of Warcraft are appauling on the highest settings when I was self assured that with all the latest upgrades it would work perfectly fine with minimal frame drops. This as especially annoyed me because the price of the laptop wasn't cheap at all so any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty sure that this definitely shouldn't be happening. In fact, I'm positive!

Yours,
Jamie.

A:A weird problem. Should this be happening?

Is there a link to the machine?

To begin with, "gaming laptop" is almost a contradiction in terms. Though they can certainly be optimized for gaming, and the powerful ones will work the best for gaming, the space problem will preclude a laptop from being a major gaming machine like a desktop could be. You will always be under-spec for a great many games, especially newer ones with a lot of graphics.

Do your machine and software meet the game's stated requirements?

And also remember that no matter how powerful, a machine that is busy doing something else will always be slower accomplishing what you are trying to do. Make sure that memory is not filled with services (not a problem for you), things aren't happening in the background, and that the drivers for your hardware are optimized. That does NOT mean to use somer crappy online driver "updater" but to get good drivers from the manufacturer or reputable sites. In the case of many laptops, that means the manufacturer exclusively because of graphics being designed and modified for a particular machine, making the standard drivers useless or inefficient.

Sometimes, too much RAM can slow a machine. Some boards use a different addressing scheme when more RAM is added and those are almost always slower than the original scheme. You could try removing half the RAM to test it. Check to see how much you actually use. You will probably be surprised.

With new machines, though they may be capable of som... Read more

Ever since I bought my Lenovo Yoga 920 laptop, I've been having this weird problem, where my screen blurs out, and this weird colored lines appear on my screen, and I don't know what's wrong. I'm worried that it might be some sort of screen defect or something... I attached a picture to this post. Please check it out and let me know what I can do to fix this.

A:Something weird is happening to my screen!

That's a panel issue, I believe. Time to send it in.

Almost every time I turn on my PC there are things changed, like the size of default font for my computer, or like my MSN was missing from my all programs list, and things in my MSN are missing like my offline list. Its really weird. I'm pretty sure the cause of these things is because of spyware, but how am I supposed to get rid of it?? I have already done spyware scans with windows defender but it didn't find anything. If anyone could help me that would be great!!

A:Weird things keep happening

The first thing you need to do is install http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html

Then you need to post your log in the security forum. If you have spyware, etc. it will yake a lot more programs to get rid of the stuff. If you need more help...ask
