I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello. I've searched high and low for answers, tried many suggestions, but haven't had any luck in resolving.
1. OneDrive explorer won't display in Modern UI (tries to load, shows splash screen/logo initially, but in a flash, turns black / displays blank/black screen and just hangs there. however, OneDrive does appear in left pane of my Windows Explorer, and in
Charm/PC Settings/Accounts & OneDrive all settings appear correct, ie connected to my Microsoft account, shows Used vs Free cloud storage space available, etc...)
2. When I check onedrive.com, recent files created on my computer and saved to c:\users\[myusername]\OneDrive\etc... are not syncing/uploading automatically as they're supposed to.

Things I've tried:

sfc /scannowchkdsk /f /rControl Panel/Troubleshooting/ProgramsRan AppsDiagnostic.diagcab & onedrivets.diagcab tool/utilities

Hello maskin26,

Make sure that you don't have any media in the drives (cd,floppy, etc)

Was anything recently added before the problem?

Boot into the BIOS and make sure that the HDD is recognized by the system and check the boot order.

Yesterday I serviced a Win7 Toshiba laptop that was in tough shape: it's performance was terrible. A big part of the problem was that the computer was umpteen behind in Windows Updates plus the owner had just about every Microsoft Office product and all of them needed Windows Updates, both security and updates. OK that's not the first time I've seen that; however, the owner uses Google Chrome as his browser.
My questions are
Aren't Microsoft's Windows Updates supposed to be kept up to date even when a different browser is being used?
And doesn't Google Chrome or other browsers have a method for that to happen?
Fortunately the good news is the computer is back to running like new again.

A:Do non-microsoft browsers have a method for Microsoft's Windows Updates?

Only Microsoft products (and certain drivers pushed via Windows Updates) are being updated via Windows Updates. Other products and web browsers uses their own update process/program. Google Chrome uses the Google Update Program, while Mozilla Firefox uses the Mozilla Maintenance Service (I think). So no, Windows Update isn't responsible for the update of other web browsers, other than Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge (on Windows 10).

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

A:Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Wi

Try temporarily disabling your antivirus application and if you have a third-party firewall installed, enable the Windows firewall temporarily but disable the third-party one.

This has solved the same problem for many other people according to what I've read elsewhere on other forums. Seems to be a common problem with Net Framework updates.

If this solves the problem and the update installs okay, you can re-enable your antivirus and third-party firewall, but remember to disable the Windows firewall as having two firewalls running together is not advisable.

I own a Dell XPS 8900 desktop computer purchased in late 2015. It came pre-installed with Windows 10 Home. Just this past week, using a legitimate product key, I upgraded the OS to Windows 10 Pro.
However, I later realized (by way of some quick internet research) that whatever product key was used to activate the Windows 10 Home system that came with the host was actually injected into the motherboard. I did not obtain this information before upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.
My question is this...If for some reason I wanted to go back to Windows 10 Home (by re-installing it from scratch or using some kind of downgrading process), would I need to know what that original product key was or would my instance of Windows 10 be automatically activated due to the built in key in the motherboard?
Note: I tried to use a special utility to extract this key but I wasn't successful.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

Microsoft Suspends Windows 10 Builds to Prepare New Windows Update System

Microsoft has temporarily suspended the delivery of new Windows 10 builds to insiders enrolled in the Fast and Slow rings, as the Windows team is internally working on the new Unified Update Platform that the company announced earlier this year.

Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, said they are planning to internally test the new UUP system internally before shipping it to users who are part of the Insider program, so it?s not clear how long this is going to take.

What?s important to know is that users can no longer download new builds in the Fast and Slow rings for PCs. Mobile users are not affected.

?We are getting ready to start releasing PC builds to Insiders using UUP. To prepare for this, we are going to pause all PC builds for both the Fast and Slow rings starting this evening (Friday 12/2). We will begin flighting the latest builds via UUP starting with our internal rings first then to Insiders based on each ring?s promotion criteria. We?re excited to be able to release builds for PC to Insiders using UUP! Mobile builds are not impacted by this,? Dona explained.
What?s UUP?
For those who missed Microsoft?s original announcement on the Unified Update Platform, this is a new updating system that speeds up update checks and dramatically cuts the size of updates by only downloading the bits that you need, and not full new builds.

The delivery of large OS updates ... Read more

Microsoft Reveals How It Made Windows 10 ?the Most Secure Windows Ever?

Windows 10 Anniversary Update offers best security, it says
Nov 12, 2016 06:51 GMT By Bogdan Popa
Microsoft improved security features in Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and this helped the company achieve what it describes as ?the most secure Windows ever,? as not only that it fights against malware, but it can also prevent, detect, and remove ransomware.

In a blog post today, the company explains that it focused specifically on these steps in order to bolster security in the case of ransomware, so Windows 10 Anniversary Update fights against threats even before they reach your computer.

For example, Adobe Flash Player, which is one of the software solutions that are most often attacked by cybercriminals, runs in Microsoft Edge in an isolated container, which means that any successful exploit using one of its vulnerabilities cannot be expanded to system level. Furthermore, Microsoft locked the browser, so an exploit running in Edge cannot execute another program on your system.

Additionally, Windows 10 Anniversary Update fights ransomware with email protection using machine learning models and heuristics to detect links and email file attachments distributing infected files.

And last but not least, machine learning is obviously playing a key role in prevention, with Microsoft saying that it?s investing massively in identifying and blocking malware more quickly.

MICROSOFT HAS CONFIRMED that being a Windows 10 Insider does not guarantee a free copy of the operating system.
The company is using the Windows Insider programme as its biggest ever beta test for what is being billed as the final or definitive version of Windows, or Windows-as-a-service.
But Microsoft has made it clear that its generosity stretches only so far, and that being a beta tester is an honour in itself.
Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users when it launches later this year.
Windows 8 has reached end of life, and customers will need to take the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 first, which is still subject to holdouts totalling 5.88 percent of the OS market, according to this month's Netmarketshare figures.

Over the last couple of weeks, Microsoft began advertising Windows 10 to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Those who are regularly up to date via Windows Update should now have the option to reserve a copy of Windows 10 via the system tray, which will put you in for pre-downloading Windows 10 before July 29th. Earlier this week, Microsoft released another update for Windows 8.1 users, which puts reserving Windows 10 at the forefront of Windows, literally during the Windows 8.1 setup process and even before reaching the desktop.

This new update allows users to reserve Windows 10 within the OOBE (out of box experience) when first booting a new install or setting up a newly purchased PC. The ability to reserve comes after you setup your account, but before you even reach the desktop. This means that new users who recently purchased a Windows 8.1 device simply can't miss the chance to reserve Windows 10. This also appears if you clean install Windows 8.1 with November Update roll-up and are connected to the internet.

Microsoft really wants to make sure people are aware of win10. I guess they need something to brag about when win10 is finally released.

Microsoft Re-Issues Windows 7 Patch Preparing Windows 10 Upgrade

Microsoft has re-published a Windows 7 and 8.1 update that in the past has been associated with the company?s aggressive Windows 10 push, this time trying to focus on providing users with a smooth transition to the new operating system.

KB3150513 is an update shipped to systems running Windows 7, 8.1, and Windows 10 versions prior to 1703, and its purpose is to prepare the computer for the upgrade to Windows 10.

On April 21, Microsoft rolled out the 10th revision to the update, so users who are yet to upgrade to Windows 10 are once again being re-offered the patch.

Smooth upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update
With the Windows 10 Creators Update now available for download, it more or less makes sense for Microsoft to provide a new compatibility patch to users, especially because a smooth upgrade is needed for those making the move from Windows 7 and 8.1, but also from Windows 10 TH1 or the Anniversary Update.

?This update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions will help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system,? Microsoft explains in the KB page.

?Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results.?

I started having this issue today and have had no luck solving it. Anytime I start up windows and log on to a user it'll Blue Screen with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I'm not sure if my computer is/was infected, if I have/had a corrupt user profile, if my HDD has problems, and/or other?
I just checked task manager since the HDD light is on constantly and Microsoft Windows Search Indexer is using ~90% CPU.
My computer problems started a few days ago with device unrecognized messages coming up and I was not able to save files. I restarted my computer and was not able to access C drive (it showed up in Windows Explorer, but not device manager).
Steps I've gone through since the problem started:
- I started my computer in safe mode and was getting an error window that Windows Help and Support couldn't start
- I tried running the system file checker tool and got the message that Windows Resource Protection couldn't perform the requested operation
- I tried running chkdsk and got a bad image error saying that c:\windows\SYSTEM32\fsutilext.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error (Error status 0xc000012f)
- I tried to run chkdsk again from command prompt and got the messages that it couldn't run because the volume was in use by another process so I scheduled the volume to be checked the next time the system restarts
- Next I right clicked on my C drive and clicked Properties to check, I then got a message saying that MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it. I pressed unload and got an exception error.
- I checked that Windows Event Log Properties (local computer) was running... Read more

Welcome to BC...
Though your problem(s) seem more than adware and malware...use the programs below to find and remove both.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

Just wanted to add that in the article it says
This upgrade has been made available since March 28 and comes as a recommended update, which means that you’ll have to manually tick the update to receive it.Click to expand...

By default recommended updates are treated the same as security updates & is installed automatically so most people already have the windows 10 downloader. If you don't want it you'll have to uninstall update KB3035583 then go to windows update & hide the update so it doesn't get reinstalled.

If the rumors are true, Microsoft is about to ditch Windows 10 S. After struggling with this unmanageable operating system recently, I say good riddance.

When Microsoft released Windows 10 S last May, I was as skeptical as anyone. In fact, I called this weirdo operating system variant "the future (but not the present) of the desktop PC."

I'm going to speculate that the S stands for someday. Because this new Windows edition is probably not one you want to run today, but it is clearly version 1.0 of something we'll see in two or three years.
[Y]ou should consider Windows 10 S, in its current state, to be a not particularly sophisticated version 1.0.

As introduced on the Surface Laptop and, much later, on a wave of low-cost third-party PCs aimed at the education market, Windows 10 S was basically Windows 10 Pro, with a locked-down configuration that prevents users from running any apps that aren't included with Windows 10 or available through the Windows Store.Click to expand...

That's not a bad concept, but it was terribly executed. And so, nine months later, it appears that Microsoft is about to kill off Windows 10 S the operating system and instead turn it into a feature: "S Mode on Windows 10."

Good riddance.

That change might deal with the fatal flaw of Windows 10 S as introduced. The point of this operating system variant, I observed last year, is to solve "the biggest problem in personal computing: the clueless PC user... Read more
