ThinkPad Yoga 12 BSOD since 2018: "Attempted switch from dpc"

Q: ThinkPad Yoga 12 BSOD since 2018: "Attempted switch from dpc"

Since installing Windows Updates on Jan 2, 2018 my TPYoga 12 has been giving BSOD's when waking from sleep. The message is "Attempted switch from dpc". It happens at least once a day now. Sometimes the next boot is successful, and sometimes it happens a second time after the system tries to reboot which then shows a diagnostic screen. Choosing to boot as normal from that diagnostic screen then does boot successfully. This is on a system running Win10 Pro V1709 build 16299.192. I have seen one other user with a TPY12 report this recently (see post in german). Looking at many posts regarding this specific message over the years it seems to be related to a driver issue. Given the rather intense troubleshooting instructions for issues like these I'm hoping someone here has found a fix. Below a screencap of my deteriorated system reliability.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Some more searching led me to this post stating that it's related to the Synaptics touchpad driver. Windows did install four Synaptics items the day before things went bad. I have uninstalled the touchpad driver in Device Manager, re-downloaded the driver package from Lenovo's driver page, and installed it. Let's hope this fixes it, and let's hope Windows doesn't "update" the driver again. For the record, here are the updates that ran right before the problem appeared:

Hello everybody.!I would appreciate any help.Started getting BSOD(Attempted_Switch_From_DPC) almost every other day and I've paid attention that this usually happens when laptop is idle.My laptop is a month and a half old and it shipped with 8GB DDR4 ram soldered in MB(  base ram speed is 2666mhz but the real working speed that shown in Task Manager is 2400 because of CPU).So I decided put extra RAM and it turned out that my laptop supports up 48GB RAM so I bought 32GB DDR4 2666 module from Samsung and got 40GB in total. I'm not sure maybe it's coincidence but I started getting these BSODs after these things: installing RAM, updating BIOS, updating Windows system (Cumulative update), using USB type-C adapter with 3-USB and 1-LAN output.  I don't know who the culprit is.Here is the link to the DUMP file, data from Msinfo and Speccy -  https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjF0Y2tXlq21hAVSSnCL8_95zho4?e=rt8xuIMy laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad T590Records from Event Viewer:Log Name:      SystemSource:        Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PowerDate:          11-Sep-19 11:43:42Event ID:      41Task Category: (63)Level:         CriticalKeywords:      (70368744177664),(2)User:          SYSTEMComputer:      LAPTOP-1NK0CFUHDescription:Th... Hi! If you have a watt meter such as the one below, when you put your Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2018/3:rd gen under maximum load for long, what power consumption does it actually show? Personally I'm asking this because I'm pondering buying an Akitio Node Pro Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, which would work as laptop charger through the USBC-Thunderbolt cable's "Power Delivery" function, however it gives 60W while the X1 6:th gen comes with a 65W charger. I wonder if the 60W charger would work in the real world. Things you can do to maximize load on your laptop: * put your laptop on maximum load max   * CPU like calculating a zillion decimals of pi,   * read disk all the time like some disk benchmarking program,  * run something on the laptop's built-in display too like loop a video, and * plug in one or two 2.5" harddrives to the USB plugs and run disk benchmarking on it/them too. I think this the real world max watt consumption is very interesting for the world to know, also if you want to know how much you are really pay for your laptop being powered on, this is central for you to test. (I'm making a separate thread where I ask the same thing for X1 6:th gen) Thank you and most grateful for any followup!  https://www.amazon.com/TS-836A-Energy-Voltage-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00E945SJG

Hi, I recently ordered the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2018 with i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and HDR Display (Campus Edition). The first unit had two red glowing pixels and dust between the digitizer and the display layer. So I sent it back and ordered a new one - this one was even worse, much more dust under the screen (seen as dark black spots). See my other post for pictures.Yeah, I sent it back and so one and so one. In total had four devices. 3/4 had red glowing pixels. 3/4 had dust under the screen. That is not acceptable for such a premium device.

I have a feeling it is something to do with the windows anniversary update and a driver that has been installed (if I had to guess something to do with intel rapid storage technology as I had to have a custom version running before to avoid bluescreens, however I cannot remember the version number and am unsure if windows updated it.)

*Edit* Windows has not updated intel rapid storage, it is the same version I was using before.

Anyway, it was happening as I was playing Gears 4 and I have attached the perfmon and information asked for within the thread. (also perfmon is showing devices that are not recognised and detected, I am aware of these, one is an xbox 360 controller which does not have drivers and the others are my wireless device which I have disabled as I am using ethernet.)

A:BSOD, cannot peg down what is causing it (Attempted switch from DPC)

Please disconnect the xbox 360 controller from the system and uninstall it's software. The earlier versions of these devices are known to cause BSOD's on some WIndows systems. As for the disabled wireless device - please re-enable it, then update it's drivers.Once the drivers are updated, then feel free to disable it again. Your UEFI/BIOS (version 4206) dates from 2013.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and that outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating. Please uninstall the Corsair Link soft... I'm getting Blue Screens of Death everytime I use Firefox v40.0.3 and it ONLY occurs when I'm using Firefox.

Code: 0x000000B8
Attempted Switch From DPC
Faulting Driver ==> HAL.DLL
Every BSoD has the same error data.

Windows XP SP3 all latest drivers and running stable eccept for this problem.
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.33GH
4 GB memory
SATA 320GB WD drive
nVidia Quadro FX580 latest drivers
HP xw4600 Workstation

I've tried everything I can think of, like turning Hardware Acceleration on/off
Makes no difference what other programs I have running at the same time nor what I'm doing. It ONLY occurs while Firefox is running even if Firefox is loaded in the background but I'm not actively using it.

I tried using IE v8 (the last one MS offered for Win XP) extensively and it worked fine. No BSOD and this was for several hours. Started Firefox in "Safe Mode" still get BSoD. Ran virus scans with no hits.

I have a near identically setup of XP on a second primary partition that I can set active on/off hidden/not hidden. Firefox works fine on this second partition. It obviously has the same hardware and all drivers are the same too.

I have attached one dumpfile output listing by BlueScreenView. Every BSOD dumpfile is the same except for the date/time.

Does anyone know if it's possible to install the new TrackPad with the buttons from the TPY 12 in the old model? Or will there be hardware/driver problems?I'm sure many have the same question for their machines, for example the T440, how about those? Thanks!

Hi folks, I have a ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 20DM003RGE and I suspect that a switch or sensor is defective. In the BIOS the keyboard works without problems and when installing Windows the touchpad also works. After installing Windows 10, neither the keyboard nor the touchpad works in Windows itself. The switch or sensor that deactivates the keyboard in tablet mode is obviously defective. Now I'd like to know how to disable this switch in Windows so that the keyboard and touchpad work again. In other words, the keyboard should be enabled in notebook mode and in tablet mode. Does anyone know which registry entry disables the keyboard and touchpad in tablet mode? Or how can I reactivate these components?I'd also like to know exactly where this switch is so I can replace it later. Best regards

Hello there, i'm new around here, I've recently encountered a BSOD out of the blue while the PC was idling. So far it only happened once, but I don't want to take any chances.

The affected driver was commonly known as the ntoskrnl.exe, it happened a year back but the affected was associated with some other drivers that I known, so solving it wasn't that hard. But this time it doesn't associate with any other driver ( I may have been wrong ). Anyway, this issue occur right after I've updated the AMD Catalyst Driver, which may be root cause of this issue, but I just gotta make sure.

I've attached my recent dumpfile below, if I've made any mistake on posting, or miss out any information required for debugging, please let me know.

Many thanks

I started getting this error and BSOD after the last major update (Anniversary update?). My PC starts fine and is OK for hours, then suddenly falls over. It never did this before the update.

I have updated all my drivers and also run a scan and repair on the registry using the Registry utility in Advanced System Care, but it's still happening.

What else can I do without just rolling back to a restore point (which would presumably just try to update itself again...)

Thanks,

Hello,  i unboxed a new ThinkPad P1 and installed a fresh Version of Windows 10 Enterprise. I just now saw that it doesnt charge the internal battery or does any signs of detecting that i plugged in the ac adapter. It also doesnt turn on if ac is plugged. It runs fine on battery only but it has only about 30 percent left.  Im new to Lenovo so my question here is which troubleshooting approach should i go now? Can this be a Software issue caused by my fresh install of Windows?  Ive read many confusing things about the Emergency Reset Button on the backside of the device.  Any comments are appreciated.  Kind regards, Ingo

In the beginning of March 2018, there was a critical BIOS update, which I ran... Prior to the update my system's CPU tempratures, while ideal, where very stable and around 55 degrees celsius. After the BIOS update my CPU temprature reads are all over the place. While ideal, the sensor can read 55c and instantly jump to 82c, back to 64c, upto over 90 degrees celsius and so on [you get the idea], with arbitrary temp reads, without any apparent reason...  Has anyone came across this issue?Should I be worried about this?Should I rollback to previus BIOS version? Could I ,even? Thanks

It seems Lenovo just rolled out new plans for  Thinkpad customer to choose their warranty add-ons. It moved from old optional plans with different extent of bundled products (e.g. ADP, KYD, Sealed battery) into an a-la-carte item model for the customer to choose. I compare Lenovo online sales website in HK, JP, SG and US and have the following findings: 1. Not all countries have rolled out the new warranty options scheme yet (e.g. Lenovo HK and Lenovo JP is still using old "bundled" warranty plan option) 2. Inconsistencies on the choice of additional warranty services available for Thinkpad customers (For Levono SG, Seal Battery, Keep Your Drive are not available as add-ons if the customer chooses Depot Warranty plan, while Lenovo US offers these add-ons to both Depot and Onsite Warranty. Meanwhile, Lenovo US customer need to buy an add-on for international warranty but Lenovo HK, SG offers the international warranty to all new Thinkpads they sold. 3. Lack of transparency on warranty add-on pricing. I noted Lenovo SG priced Seal Battery Add-on for T480s at SGD330 but same Add ons in Lenovo US is only quoted at USD$26. Can Lenovo explain why such discrepencies happen? And welcome you all share your findings on the Thinkpad warranty add-on offerings in your home country.

Hi! We have a number of ThinkPad Yoga 11e, most of them are about 1.5 years old and we're currently updating their Windows 10 image and BIOS. Imaging process completes fine, but updating the BIOS has caused us a lot of issues. When updating BIOS from within Windows with the latest BIOS Update Utility (1.26) from Lenovo's website the laptops crash with a blue screen of death (BSOD). We then tried all previous BIOS versions (from 1.10 and up), but they all crashed too. The current BIOS version on the laptops is 1.10, but even that failed. We initially ran the installer from our network drive with the installer file renamed for easier identification. We have since tried renaming the installer file back to the original name and running it locally. Have also tried running it only with wireless enabled, running only with Ethernet enabled. At one point we thought there might have been another installation process running in the background (drivers, Windows Update), so made sure that had all completed. The BIOS upgrade still crashed the laptop. We have been unable to pinpoint any of the above scenarios to be the culprit, as now some of them work randomly. Two machines side by side, one will work and the other one will fail. We're pulling our hair out with this one. Has anyone else had this experience and have you found what steps need to be taken to successfully complete the BIOS upgrade every time?

Hello!I bought this 2018 Yoga 730 15.6" just 2 days ago and I'm thinking about upgrading the ssdbcoz I've got only 256GB (M.2 SSD / PCIe 3.0 x 4) which feels quite insufficient. So I'm wondering if it's possible to add another M.2 SSD to my laptop, so that I could use the additional SSD as a storage drive. I don't think this laptop has an empty 2.5" ssd slot. If I can't put another ssd on the motherboard, then buying a bigger M.2 SSD and replacing the existing one would be the only way to gain more capacity? Could someone enlight me pls!

Dear Lenovo-Community,my Thinkpad S1 Yoga change into tablet modus not only when I fold back the monitor but also when I have closed the lid normaly and than reopened it or sometimes by slightly moving the monitor or a minor percussion of the table. That is very annoying, because than I have no access to keyboard or touchpad while beeing in the laptop-shape. I can revive keyboard/touchpad by folding back the monitor and than back to the normal laptop shape, but this works only one time! After that I have to send the thinkpad in the energy saving mode and wake it up, to get keyboard/touchpad back.I think it is a problem with the sensor, but does there a software setting exist so keyboard/touchpad keep unlocked in tablet-modus? Or a way to switch off the tablet-modus completely? I can live without the tablet-modus and the thinkpad is probably too old to be worth a great repair. My system is fully updated. Any idea out there?

Reports looks the same, but have different codes and problems. Thanks for any help.

I am going to upgrade my laptop very soon.  I really like the X1 carbon but also fancy the Yoga.  I will be buy the highest performance available for my needs.   It appears the Carbon and Yoga can be purchased with the same i7 and ram configurations.   Ports are the same as well?  I need at least 1 thunderbolt connection.  Am I missing any performance differences between them a the high end? It would appear the biggest trade off is the extra size and weight of the Yoga?  The Carbon being more svelte?  I would not use the Yoga in tablet/pen mode but it would be nice to have and perhaps I find more applications for it. I am in IT admin - I wish they still had real Ethenet ports...  but I get the form factor will not support it. Thanks in advance for any all/help.

My two cents: If you don't need the tablet/pen mode, the X1 Carbon is svelter. If you want the sveltest machine with a real Ethernet port, look at the T480s.

X1 Yoga 2018 model Technical specs says this: 4-in-1-cardreader (MicroSD) (SD, MMC, SDHC ja SDXC) But I don't see any place where to stick my SD cards, except the MicroSD. Hi! If you have a watt meter such as the one below, when you put your Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2018/6:th gen under maximum load for long, what power consumption does it actually show? (I'm making a separate thread where I ask the same thing for Yoga 3:rd gen) Thank you and most grateful for any followup!  https://www.amazon.com/TS-836A-Energy-Voltage-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00E945SJG

My Lenovo Yoga 460 notebook is unable to boot and continuously turns itself on and off in loops, with only a black screen. This happened immediately after installing the 27/Dec/2018 BIOS update given here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/au/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-YOGA-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKP... Is there any way I can make it boot again?

I had real trouble finding a straight answer to the question of whether there were still problems upgrading to Windows 10 on the Yoga 2 Pro three years after it was released (I upgraded in August 2018). This post is just to add my positive experience so that others might find it when searching instead of having the usual problem that only negative experiences are reported. So, basically I was moving from Windows 8.1 64 bit to Windows 10 Build 17134 and the short version is that absolutely nothing bad happened.  I did have all my firmware/drivers up-to-date, so I didn't even have to make any changes there. The only problem I have encounted is one that I already had, which is to do with Bluetooth cutting out maybe because of WLAN interference (seems to vary with intensity of use). So overall I am happy with the result.  Especially as I successfully used the tool described in this ZDNet article to perform the Windows 10 upgrade for free even though officially it stopped being offered on this basis years ago: https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

Yay, another major windows update... another round of driver problems! Fun! After yesterday's big Windows update (Windows 10 version 1803, aka the Spring 2018 feature update) the Synaptics fingerprint reader doesn't work. Uninstalling and re-intalling the driver didn't fix anything. Device manager says:This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful. Has anyone found a work around? Thank you. setup:YOGA 720-15IKB Signature EditionWindows 10 1803 (OS Build 17134.1)newest fingerprint reader drivers straight from the website
