I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have decided to build my own computer. I am not an extremely experienced hardware person, but I have decided to anyways.

I have read some magazine articles, etc., but have not come to a decision on what kind of motherboard/processor I want to start with.

I do know that I want a MoBo with support for at least a 1.4 GHz processor, a 4x AGP slot, on/off board sound (doesn't matter) and support for at least 512k of RAM.

I don't want to spend a tremendous amount of money, but I do wany my money to be well spent. Any recommendations on the processor brand and/or MoBo brand??

I'm leaning towards an Athlon XP instead of a Pentium IV, is that a wise choice or is it a matter of opinion?

Any recommendations would be well appreciated!!

I recently experienced electrical storm damage to my router, Intel LAN card, and mobo in the PC (even thou' I have surge protectors!)

The mobo is a Gigabyte 870A-UD3 and currently unavailable. OS is Windows 7 64-bit, which I really do like and I do have the original disc and licence number.

I think it's a good idea to renew the CPU whilst I'm at it, because the PC is reasonably old but runs extremely well 24/7 with no problems. It has a newish Corsair AX-860 PSU, 16GB of new ram, and a Samsung SSD. The PC will not be used for gaming - just for watching films and videos and photo editing.

I'm in the process of buying another PC but this will have Window 10. The damaged PC will be used as a backup, so it won't be in constant use.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a replacement mobo please.

Hello fellow techspot users. :haha:
I need some recommendation from users from have some backbone knowledge or experience about this kind of related question.

I am looking for a motherboard (perfer possibly with a integrated HDMI) that can handle a payload for my

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ that feeds off 125watts.
I also got a few sticks of 1GB 800mhz 6400 RAM.
9600GT graphics card.

I am Also looking for a **quiet** and good brand Power Supply Unit.

nothing too exaggerated or/and expensive.
but you can list your thoughts and opinions/product/brand names please.
Thank you everyone.

A:Recommendations on HDMI-capable Mobo, PSU

Consider Seasonic, FSP Group, Corsair, OCZ, and PC Power and Cooling among your power supply choices.
Do some reading on Gigabyte, MSI, and ASUS boards.... Look at reviews at such sites as Newegg.com, Toms Hardware, and others you will find with a Google search. Do searches here on TechSpot for the boards you find mentioned, as there are some good discussions already posted on good AMD boards.
By having already chosen your graphics card and memory, it is more difficult to post model numbers without doing the research ourselves... and you will benefit from what you learn from the work already done by others.

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm completely new to these forums, so hello! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the following problems. It's a doozy, and has completely gotten worse over the last few days. Please read on...

My computer at home contracted a particularly nasty virus. The computer initially ran slower than molasses (probably from spyware/adware/virus), so my wife and I have been attempting to fix this problem. It was totally *my* fault, as I went on a gaming website and it downloaded some content that's now choking the life out of the computer.

I recently attempted to install new virus protection. Now, the computer is telling me that the copy of Windows XP I have is an illegal copy (which is NOT true, it was legitimately bought), and that I need to validate the copy. My wife has the administrative privileges on the computer, so I could only get so far this morning in fixing the problem. Compounding problems are the anti virus program I installed is failing to initialize, and sometimes Windows Explorer crashes, and leaves me with just the background picture, but no desktop whatsoever.

The CD rom drive still works, albeit slowely (takes forever to load the contents of a CD). I am a complete newbie when it comes to these types of errors. We have a lot of stuff on the computer that needs to be saved, so a "do or die" reinstall won't be feasible, as we don't want to lose everything we have on the computer. I think... Read more

I've just been 'talking' extensively with the software side, & we basically came to the conclusion that my current ancient computer is on the outs & doesn't have long to live. It cannot be upgraded.
I'd like to build a new one from scratch. Although I'm a novice & have never tried this at home, I did take an A+ course last year so am not totally unprepared.
I've been browsing on Pricewatch.com...I'd like to buy a motherboard combo (P4, at least 2.0Ghz) w/ integrated sound (upgradeable), USB 2.0, DDR SDRAM, heatsink & fan, a case/power supply combo, a video card with at min. 64mb ram (I'm not a serious gamer) and a hard drive--at least ATA 100 & 40Gb. I'd just like any suggestions/recommendations/cautions from anyone who's done this before & really knows what they're doing, so I don't screw it up. I'd appreciate any tips anyone wants to give me on products, etc. Oh yeah, I'd like to keep my Win ME & load it on the new HDD, mainly because I resent the fact that Microsoft won't let me put XP on more than one computer (if this is a dumb idea, please tell me why) Thanks!

Hi ladies and gentleman...

I'm fairly confident in that I'm not the only one who is wondering about which fans are reliable and whether or not they truly make a difference from one another.

I was just wondering, which 80mm fans, which 120mm fans, and which 92mm fans people recommend...

Thank you.

A:Fans - Recommendations needed :)

i may not have recommendations for 80 and 92mm fans but i just want to say a few things.

try and get a fan that has low dBa but high CFM. higher CFM is usually accompanied by higher dBa (more noise) unless its a 120mm which runs on lower RPMs but provide more CFM for the RPM because if its bigger fins.

on avg, i guess a 28 dBa is silent enough for most people (esp me) and dBa:CFM ratio arent so good on smaller fans compared to 120mm fans persay
avg dBA and CFM on 80mm fans are 30 and 34. having a few of these in ur case can get pretty annoying (maybe its jus the ones i had, they were ghetto fans by sunbeam)

sleeve bearings vs ball bearings
sleeve is quieter but less life
ball is bit more noise but longer life. its all up to u n ur preferences.

in terms of brands, im not so sure, jus dont pick a 2$ fan. u get what u pay for.

anyway im not sure if any of what i wrote make much sense... i need to go to sleep now lol gnight

I currently use a Seagate 5TB portable drive to store basically everything (my Lightroom Catalog & photos, my videos, documents, music etc), so this means very little is stored on my Mac HD, and doesn't slow it down, especially when doing post-production on photos or video. The drive was formatted to exFat when I bought it, and this means that when I was travelling between home, work and college I could plug my drive into any machine (Win or Mac) I can access my LR catalog and edit my work anywhere.

However, the drive is almost full, and I wanted to upgrade to a larger portable drive (at least 8TB). However I am finding it difficult to find an 8TB drive that doesn't require an external power source. It's not a problem at home just plugging the power lead into a socket, but in work or college there often aren't accessible sockets within reach, so it's vital that the 8TB drive can do the same as my current 5TB drive and take its power from the Mac itself.

I did order the following: https://www.photospecialist.ie/lacie-porsche-design-p-9233-8tb-drive-usb-3-0#group5315
It seemed to fix the bill, because it's USB 3.0, although it has a USB-C socket, which I've not seen on any drives before. I think it's meant to suit people connecting to their Macbooks or phones. However after I ordered I discovered that the drive needs an external power source, and also I found a lot of reviews online on Amazon where people were complaining about the... Read more

I've built a couple of computers, troubleshot them when their was problems, had probably hundreds of hours of maintenance/gaming on them, and have loved every minute!
Building a computer is too much fun to consider buying one complete.
But it has been a few years since I have done this, and I am having some problems ferreting out the new boards, etc., and would appreciate some advice.

I am building a computer not for anything specific, but need it to have enough power and RAM to be able to play with pictures, and video if desired.

I was thinking about getting an Asus with an AMD processor, 3000-4000 processor, 800 MB front side bus, and 1 GIG of DDR RAM. I didn't know if the different types of sockets made much of a difference, these days. I have always run AMD, and don't know about the different kinds of Intel processors.

I have been told to get a hard drive, SATA2, at least 160GB, with a minimum of 8MB cache, I assume 7200 RPM minimum.

Case/power supply combination, I don't know how many watts is even considered normal these days.

DVD Burner- don't think this is a biggie as to which brand, but may want a multi-layered one for backup purposes

Along with the normal modem, there is a chance that this may be set up a a server for a network at my house, eventually. So, if I didn't get the components as an integral part of the motherboard, I would need enough slots to expand.

Finally, I know that I can make a real screamer for over $1000, but ... Read more

Could anyone recommend a reasonably priced (preferably free)knowledge base with the following requirements.

- have multiple search criteria(ie. can narrow down a search with in a search.) and modifiable search fields
- allow multiple users to modify and access at the same time
- be able to search through e-mails and attached documents
- uses a database which can easily be extracted to Oracle
- GUI interface
- simple implementation

I've found a couple which looks like it'll provide what I need but I would like to get some opinions from many of you who might have implemented one.

Ones that I'm looking more closely at currently are:
- ThoughtTracker = but have no idea about the database export options
- Web Board = kind of costly hope to find something cheaper
- Forum = need a closer look
- KB = heard it's pretty good
- Personal Knowbase = ??? yet

I know almost nothing about editing videos and get confused when I see the menus and controls in editing software. I don't even understand the terms. For instance, I don't see anything that looks straight forward to me as to how to open a video for editing. Instead, I see something that says "Open a Project" and I don't quite understand what to do with a video even if I do figure out how to open it in a "Project".

So, I'm kinda lost.

Here are some of the things I would like to do:

Join two videos together
Take out uninteresting segments that may be several seconds or several minutes long
Compress time, meaning in an instructional how-to-disasemble/reassemble video speed up time through repetitive identical processes, like maybe the removal of several screws.
Convert a larger MTS file to something much smaller so it can be easily downloaded and viewed, or attached to an e-mail
Remove a single frame from a video file to save as a still image
Brighten a darken a video
Color corrections

These are some of what I would like to do and if I am going to buy a software that will do these things and then learn how to use it, what would be a good one under $150? I've read a little about Adobe Premiere Elements and it looks okay; but, for someone who understands little about what he reads, I would like to have some advice from those who actually do this work regularly.

Then her e-mail access is restored.

Frankly, I don't know the exact details of all she has to do as the last time I helped her with it was several months ago.

Hey all, haven't visited the site for awhile, due to me completely forgetting the name, and when i did remember the name i gave up-as i went to the PCworld techguys. Big sigh.

But now i've found you guys in a time of need and i desperately need some guidance, on a matter what will probably bore you all to the bones.

The issue: I'm in the lookout for some upgrades to my PC, specifically my CPU and GPU (so i can play Metro 2033, not high settings, maybe medium or med-low)
Here is what i have at the moment:

9800GT Nvidia
Intel duo core 2.66ghz E7300 (512mb if that helps?)
MOBO:Micro-star MS-7387 (PCI-express 16x version(if that helps)) If i need to upgrade this, please let me know.

Now i'm not too good with compatability issues, so i was hoping if you guys could recommend me a quad core and a very good GPU for around the £400 range, with a bit of give and take obviously. I'll also replace my MOBO with different *emergency* funds if needed.

Thank you very much guys, i sincerely thank you even if you look at this, as i fully appreciate the help and support i've had from this site before.
I hope you are all patient with me also haha, i'm not the most technologically minded guy around.

Got a really nice new case today, but forgot one little thing. My mobo is full size, and the case only takes a micro atx- doh!
Anyway, looking for a recommendation for a new mobo. As it stands, I need;

Socket AM2 (for an athlon 5200)
SATA compatible (4 sockets min)
at least 1 IDE and preferably a floppy socket
DDR2 memory compatible with 4 slots ( can go to 2, but prefer 4)
AGP slot

onboard sound is useful, but I can stick a sound card in if i need to- havent really thought too much about it, and its not an issue.

It needs to be a UK available model, and preferably not too expensive- I am using th eold mobo for another build, but with the number of rigs I am running now, its a lot easier to keep it cheaper!
OCing on this one isnt an issue, its a stock runner.

is there a motherboard out there which will allow me to have a dual (or possibly a quad) core CPU while keeping my AGP graphics card??

A:Mobo Help Needed (skt 775 + AGP???)

Sure, there are plenty of AGP-based motherboards still available, and cheaply, but this is older technology. Search for boards that have AGP video graphics slots, but to find a board with dual core or quad core CPU capabilities AND AGP will be right close to impossible, as most suppliers would not want to handle such a creature. Get an older board, or take a leap forward to PCI-Express video graphics. You may be surprised at how much better they are. In my opinion the change to PCI-Express is more important than the Dual Core or Quad Core, and well worth the extra cost. Keep the old AGP system as a backup computer.

I have that ram, it's pretty good stuff for the price(In US anyway). I can't really help too much on price, I have no clue if 122 punds is good for the cpu.

How good do you want your graphics. If you only do 2d stuff, then you may be overkill, if you do 3d gaming with the newest games(farcry, doom3) then it will not really suffice. A 9550 can probably run many games at low/med. detail at 1024x768 or lower screen res's.

Here's my situation: I have a pretty old machine and I need to upgrade some of the hardware. I'm pretty sure the motherboard is busted so that is priority number 1. My processor is almost 5 years old so I'm looking for an upgrade there to go with my new motherboard. I'm looking for some recommendations on motherboard/processor combos.

Here's the catch: All my hardware is relatively old, so I'm not sure how hard it will be to find a new motherboard that is mostly compatible with my old stuff, or at least easily/cheaply adaptable. I'd like to spend under $400 total for this upgrade. Also, I'd like to stick with AMD processors because I've had nothing but success with my old one.

Current setup:
PC Chips M848A motherboard
AMD XP 2600+ Processor
ATI Radeon 9550 video card
2 IDE HDDs and an IDE DVD-R drive

I'm mostly concerned with the IDE drives, as well as an AGP compatible video card. Are good adapters out there? Do quality motherboards exist that support some of the older technology? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am trying to find a suitable mobo as a base for a computer i am building and i have more or less gotten stuck on these 3 choices.
The computer i will be building is mostly for gaming and is meant to last a while. It doesnt need to be a monster or i would have gone with the mobo supporting DDR3, it just needs to be compatible with future upgrades.
I doubt i will be overclocking anything in the near future either so thats not really a detail in my decision.
An intel e6550 is probably going to be my first CPU until prices drop more on the quads.
going to be buying an 8800 Graph card later. For now using a cheaper model for same reason as CPU choice.
Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, X38, Socket-775, ATX, Silent Pipe, DDR2, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16
Most expensive of the three. Highest FSB. Looks great. cant find much else review wise on it though...

ABIT IP35 PRO, P35, Socket-775, ATX, Silent Otes2, 2xGbLAN, DDR2, 2xPCI-Ex16
I have heard and read about a lot of problems people have been having with this but same goes for all the positive things i have seen.
Also somewhere i saw people having trouble installing Graph cards which take up 2 slots cause of the lower middle onboard heatsink. is this true?

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 iP35 4DDR2-DIMM 3PCI 4PCIe SATA Raid Audio GB-LAN Socket775 ATX
Heard this one is stable. easy to overclock if i ever do decide to try that. and the cheapest of them. while still having a FSB of 1333.

I dont use many USB ports.. 2 - 4 max.
I dont need external sata etc... Read more

Hi all;

I'm having to replace the system boards on a few older systems that have
PATA hard drives, along with DVD+RW drives. Obviously, I need
motherboards with a pair of parallel IDE sockets. Everything that I've seen
so far has only one.

Does anyone know of any boards that are still being manufactured with
two IDE sockets?

A:Advice Needed on Mobo

I'm thinking about putting together a computer for the first time, and needed some advice on motherboard selection. I'm using a few older components I have salvaged, in particular a dual core pentium D 925 3.0Ghz. I want to be able to fit this as the processor in my new build, but also plan to upgrade to a quad core in the near future, and wanted some advice on choosing a board that will have a decent chipset that will allow this. My other specs for the board (ATX) are not particularly demanding, just a decent amount of ram capacity, I also only require a single PCI-e slot, not SLI/crossfire. Also ideally it would be DX10 compatible.

Any advice on a decent board that would handle both processors would be great.

Hi to all.

Just upgraded my ram from pc 6400 4gb to pc 8500 8gb on a EVGA 122-CK-NF68-BR mobo, and with all the tinkering with the settings I cannot achieve a stable system near the intended speeds of the new ram.

Any ideas on a good mobo to run this ram ?.

My other hardware 1200w PSU
QX6800 Extreame CPU ( could be looking at uprade on CPU )
2 x 8800 Ultras
2 x HDD Raid
4 x Corsair Dominator pc 8500 ddr ram .

Cost no problem.

Thanks Adrian.

I need to replace this board Gigabyte GA-M61PM-S2 but this one on eBay is the only one I can find. Is there another board I can use instead? If so, which would you recommend?

A:Replacement mobo needed

You can replace it with any AM2, AM2+ socket motherboard. I'm partial to ASUS motherboards with Nvidia chipsets. I'm sure everyone here will have a differnt preference but that's what I like. Just go to a site like Newegg/Tigerdirect direct or the UK equivalent and find one in your price range with the features you want.

I am building a mediacenter computer with an Antec OvertureII case and Asrock 775Twins-HDTV mobo, but my surprise comes when i push the power on button, and nothing comes out. After a couple of tests, i realized that the problem is caused by the Antec psu,( with other psu the mobo starts ok, and this psu works ok with other mobo ,so.... I think that the motherboard checks the -5V signal, but the SP450 ATX v2.0 Antec PS does not have that voltage(there is only 19 pin in the 20 atx connector).

Any ideas?.

Would anyone here know which driver I'll need to install for my PC,

I only know ones that are a must would be the
-Intel chipset driver
-Realtek audio driver
-Sound blaster X-FI MB2
-Intel USB 3.0 driver
-Intel LAN driver

not sure what the rest does

Many thanks again.

A:Which Asus mobo driver is needed

I would just install all the ones except for google chrome; and google toolbar. Those you probably dont need. Anything that is marked as a driver you definitely want to install as those are probably used to help the system board identify devices attached/plugged into it.

We just had a power outtage, and the pc I was using will not boot to a useable state.

I get 1 beep ... then, I believe 9 beeps.

It looks like the pc is actually booting to the desktop, but the display indicates 'No Connection.'

I'm assuming this means the video card is kaput ... but does anyone have a beep code list for my mobo :

Asrock 939 Dual SATA-2. ?

I Googled for such a list but found nothing pertinent, and emailed Asrock with a request for the same - but won't hold my breath waiting for them to answer.

Any links / tips appreciated.

A:Asrock Mobo - Bep Codes Help Needed

As a follow up ... I've just done another Google and found that 9 Beeps commonly relates to Bios / Checksum errors.

Does this mean the Mobo is shot ? I ask this because the drive lights on the front indicate that the boot sequence completes, merely with no display.

ok, so a friend of mine bought a Compaq Presario 5000T... it's a pretty decent computer P4 1.6ghz, 512mb of PC133 memory. we are trying to put all the internals into another case. the problem, however, is that we can't find pinouts for the front panel stuff (i.e. power/reset buttons/USB/HDD lights etc.) I've tried calling hp/compaq but all they did was send me a survey and try to sell me a warranty to a computer i dont own. if anyone can help me find a front panel pinout for this computer/motherboard i can give you the motherboard model number if you can tell me how to find it. i will paypal the first person $5 that can provide me with the pinout so i can put this board in another case. will provide pics upon request. email: [email protected]

Hey peoples!

I have recently discovered that there might be a fault with my mobo and so will send it back to it's manufacturer. I was however considering buying a new mobo anyway as this does not meet all of my needs.

Specifications for my new mobo should include:
Able to handle my i5-2400 sandybridge CPU and be able to handle an upgrade up to an i5-3570k Ivybridge CPU.
4 RAM slots (DDR3)
2 GPU slots supporting 2-way SLI

I am on a budget so any good suggestions?

I also have 1 x (996768 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666 9-9-9-24 Silverline (Dual Kit)) and 2 x (XMS3). Would it be viable to use these with the mushkin in slots 1&3 and the corsair in slots 2&4 as they are the same voltage and timings?

A:Advice needed for new Mobo purchase

Most likely you can mix the Mushkin and Corsair, but you'd have to actually try it to confirm.

Regarding the motherboard, I'd just go to major suppliers and look for a mid-range board socket 1155 board from Asus, Gigabyte, or Asrock. Add Intel to the list if you aren't likely to overclock. Look for the features you must have.

You need to just take a shot and have a bit of luck to avoid DOA and RMA. All of the brands have a certain failure rate and you can't do much about it. I'm using a Gigabyte on an i5-2500, but you can have good luck with the others.

In the USA, a mid-range board is in the $140 to $200 category. Don't know about the UK.
