Q: My Laptop turns off (shuts down) suddenly without any warnin...

My Laptop turns off (or shuts down as in the case when laptop's battery discharges completly) suddenly without any warning. And I have to put my charger back to turn it on. When I turn on my laptop again it shows its battery is charging from very low level (approx 6%) but after 8-15 minutes its shows battery full status.Troubleshooting:-When I checked my battery staus through HP support assistant then it is showing ok so I updated its BIOS.

Preferred Solution: My Laptop turns off (shuts down) suddenly without any warnin...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey everyone,

My laptop, (it's an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7) recently started having this terrible problem. What happens is that I'm doing something totally non computer-intensive when all of a sudden the screen just turns black and a second or two later shuts off. It seems as though if I don't use it for a couple of days, and then boot it up, it doesn't have the problem. But once I turn it off and turn it on again, it happens.

For example, yesterday, after not using it for about two weeks, I had it on for about an hour or two before turning it off on my own. Today, I was on the internet reading an article, and had my virus software (McAfee) running a scan. I thought it was going to be okay, as if it was going to go black and turn off, it would have done so already. But, within 20-30 minutes of it being on, it did just that... it went black and turned off. I turned it on again, curious to see how long it would take to happen this time. I made it to the desktop before it went black and shut off after about 2-3 minutes.

Another thing of interest is that when it is on, it is very slow, much slower than usual. And another thing. A long while back, I had set my desktop so that it would change pictures every 10 minutes. I forgot exactly when this started, but the images don't change anymore. I thought it was just a mild annoyance, but I'm wondering if it's a symptom of the overall issue?

A couple other things: I had some system resto... Read more

This has happened to me a few times already. The first time was in February. Then it happened yesterday. Today it happened again. The symptoms are always the same.

The computer would suddenly shut off without warning. The power light would go out completely, but then it would turn itself back on. The computer would make a weird noise. Hard to explain. It's like it's trying to run something. But it's not the usual "whirrrrr" sound I typically hear when it's busy. I wish I could explain it better.

Looking at the Event Logs, I noticed this for each of the 3 times it blacked out like this:

ACPI thermal zone ACPI\ThermalZone\THRM has been enumerated.
_PSV = 323K
_TC1 = 4
_TC2 = 3
_TSP = 6000ms
_AC0 = 323K

_AC2 = 0K
_AC3 = 0K

_AC6 = 0K
_AC7 = 0K
_AC8 = 0K
_AC9 = 0K

Could this be an overheating issue? Or maybe a power supply issue?

Hey, can anyone help me out here? My operating system is Vista. My computer suddenly goes into a blue screen and says that there is something critical in my system, and will shut down to prevent data loss. So I let it shut down, I reboot in safe mode, and I find that Windows Security tells me that the entire Security System is turned off. I tried turning it back on but an error message pops up. I used Tune Up 2008, and did a system restore. I rebooted and it said that the system restore was successful, but then the next day, the same thing happened. What am I supposed to do?

February 2- 8:49 pm = I am scanning my computer right now, with my original ESET NOD 32 Smart Security, then Spybot Search and Destroy, then Windows Defender. I will post the results as a "found infection" or "did not find infection".

Please help me if you can, I don't thing this is a MAJOR thing, but I would love to not have to restart my computer every couple hours...

A:My laptop turns on then shuts off? I dont know

Sudden shut downs can be caused by a couple of different things, but the first thing you should check is your system temperatures. Are you able to boot up at all right now? If you can, then download and install the program to check your system temps:

If you can't get into windows, are you able to get into your bios? You can also check your temperatures in there.

Can you hear your case fans spinning?

i'm not exactly sure what is causing this but almost every time my laptop is shut down, the wifi disappears. the way i fix it is by running the troubleshooter for hardware and it says to restart so it can redownload the drivers but it's annoying considering i have to do this every single time it shuts off. plus, sometimes it gets so bad i have to restore my laptop to a different point in time because the troubleshooting doesn't work sometimes.i don't know if it's a virus or something else on my laptop that's doing this but i would really like for it to be fixed since it's extremely annoying and repetitive to be dealing with.

Having troubles with my laptop's cooling system. I noticed the fan completely stops working after a few minutes of running the system and then rhythmically tries to power up on its own after every 3-5 seconds yet it never really comes on, not until I restart the system entirely. This causes the system to perform an automatic shutdown due to overheating. I have some level of expertise with regards to disassembling the system and I have cleared out the possibility of dust causing the problem. Although I am unsure whether the cause is hardware or software related because the fan seems to work fine until it completely goes off on its own.My System specs are as follows:HP 630 NotebookWindows 7 32-bitIntel Core i3(If it helps, the system is about 4 years old)

A:My laptop suddenly shuts itself down

My first question to you is this: do you notice any intense heat coming from the underside of the computer? Try playing the game in your lap, and feeling for heat (don't get yourself burned though!).

Also, what type of laptop do you have? (brand and model #)

In the past Sony Laptops were very known for overheating.

I'm from India. I bought a HP 15-ay106ne laptop through my uncle in Abu Dubai on 01-01-2017.After a week I noticed that it didn't charge to 100% it reaches 99% only. After 15 days I noticed that it suddenly shuts down when the charging reaches 15% without any notification about plug-in. After few days it shuts down in between 15% and 20%.Now it's shutting down in between 36%-40% of charging. I found that the battery backup is also not good. Original backup is 10 hours but my laptop gives 5 hours of battery backup.I gave my laptop in to a HP service centre and they said it has a hardware problem. In India the spare parts are not available so please go to Dubai with your laptop.I preferred to buy it in Dubai because of its international warranty. But now they are not going to help me out of this problem.Please help me to get my laptop in good condition. And suggest me how to decrease the cycle count.

Hey Techspot, I'm hoping you can help me out with a little problem I've started experiencing. I got a Lenovo G555 just last year, and everything's been going great with it so far. However, as of about a day ago it decides to start shutting down without any warning whatsoever. It seems that this happens at random also. Some times I can keep the laptop on overnight (I like to have videos playing while I sleep) with no problems, and other times it snaps off after not even 5 minutes. Thus I can't really finish a scan with avast! or malwarebites. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary either. I don't know if it's really overheating because I keep it in a similar environment as my Toshiba laptop that has remained on around the same amount of time with no overheating whatsoever. I'm running Windows 7 on my Lenovo.

EDIT: I thought that my problem was in fact overheating, so I cleaned the fan area with some compressed air. That seems to help a little bit, but my computer still has a tendency to shut down randomly, just a lot less frequently. I checked the temperature with SpeedFan, and upon startup my core temp is as high as 80C, then cools off to about 60C when I'm doing nothing. The thing that worries me is that SpeedFan can detect no RPMs from my fan. Fan1, Fan2, and Fan3 all show 0 RPMs in the program.

I was recently having issues with the LCD backlight on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. So I took it to the tech guy who fixed the backlight issue. But, now I get sudden shut downs while I'm working on my laptop. The screen goes white for a second before it shuts off by itself. Could it be an issue with wiring inside which the tech guy messed up? Or maybe the heat? because I notice the shut down when mostly my laptop is resting on a wooden table for about half and hour. Any advise?

Does your laptop have the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT installed? If so your problems are very likely a result of the nVidia Defect (I have recently had a refund on a laptop I boughgt in 2007 because of this), have a look here http://www.nvidiadefect.com/ for info, it's a very helpful website.

I have a two year old Dell Inspiron 15R. Today while adjusting the screen in a normal fashion, I noticed something putting upward pressure from below the top right part of the keyboard (it was actually 'pressing' the quick launch buttons that are there because it was pushing up from under them). Later, the screen hinge on the bottom right burst out of the laptop encasing. Since it was sticking out, I could see that the hinge had become dislodged from where it is screwed in, so the hinge was pushing up whenever i moved the screen back. I opened the case to check it out. I saw that the cylinder that the hinge screws screw into had cracked and broken so that the screws were just hanging off the hinge. There was one lone screw that still had a spot, but it must have slipped out from constant moving. I took the free screws out and screwed in the lone screw as a temporary fix. I also unhooked the ribbon cable that connected the three quicklaunch buttons to the mobo, so that they couldn't be accidently pressed anymore (this laptop shipped with win7, and when i updated to win8 those buttons become mostly useless)

I then closed the case thinking everything would be fine since I fixed the hinge for now. After a couple mins of computer, I botted up civ5 and before the game started, my computer suddenly flickered off. I let it rest for a bit because I didn't know what could have happened, but a few mins later i started it up again and it started without problem. I tr... Read more

Hey everyone, so I recently got my laptop (ASUS G53JW) back from the ASUS service centre and that was to replace the DC jack port as the pin broke off in the port from the charger. They didn't change the motherboard, just the port as it was a defective part and caused the pin to break off.

I have no idea what they did to my laptop at the service centre, but since getting it back (yesterday) I have an issue with the laptop....I have started to get random shut downs without any warning at all. I am just sitting browsing the internet or playing a game and the laptop powers off without any blue screen, error, or warning. It boots back up right away, except for the latest time where it powered off (shortly after I plugged in my iPod) and then it kept shutting down in the boot screen about twice. I unplugged the iPod cord (and thus the iPod itself) from the USB port and that seemed to allow it to boot back up. Funny thing has started to occur as I changed what USB port I plug the iPod into, it randomly starts charging and then stops (but the cord is still plugged in)....

I checked event viewer, as I don't get a BSOD or anything and this is what I keep getting every single time these shut downs occur:

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask about this, but I thought I'd give it a try. I bought an ASUS N56VJ laptop in February of this year, 2013. It has suddenly shut down about 12 times. This happens very randomly and with no pattern that I can see. It's not an overheating issue as I'm monitoring the temperature with ReatTempGT (and it often happens after only being on for a few minutes). This happens while running the computer with it plugged in. I managed to find an error when I checked the event viewer. I'll post the information below. If anyone can explain what's going on I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

Two or three things have happened recently that make me believe that i am infected and hence am requesting help in this forum

Last night my laptop shut off all of a sudden - and i mean all of a sudden (did not boot down or warn me) like somebody flicks off a switch and the lights go out. At first I though it was the power but i was well plugged into the electricty socket and i also had battery back up.
This has happened twice before say a month back and three months back respectively but i did not give it a too much thought attributing it to freaky power fluctuation. Further, the time gaps between occurences were far and random
When i rebooted win 7 (64 bit with SP1 and completed up to date) asked me do a startup and system repair whcih i did and after a long wait i got a report saying

A:laptop suddenly shuts off without warning or boot down

There are only about five things that will cause a spontaneous shutdown. Overheating, bad power supply/adapter/powrer source interuption, flaky NIC, motherboard, or very rarely the processor. I'd check to see if it's overheating first and move on from there. Does it feel especially hot? Have you blown out the heatsink and fan area? Is your adapter making a good connection? Will it run on battery alone, is it holding a charge? Does it tend to happen when you are on the internet or accessing a network? The start up repair is normal, since the laptop did not get a chance to shut down properly, so I wouldn't worry about that, although it isn't good for it, of course.

My mom took my PC away from me, I got it back and it is retarded now.
I start the PC, the fans come on, lights are all good, then about 2 -10 seconds it shuts off and then comes back on by itself.

When I turn the power on, the monitor does not show anything at all.

I have tried many of different things:

Different PSU ( problem is not the PSU )

D/C the CD ROM / HD ( so it can't be one of those as a failure )

1 stick of RAM ( my memory is fine )

Checked ALL of my cables, they are connected properly ( checked many of times, unconnected, then reconnected alot )

Replaced the grease between heat sink / CPU ( can't be my CPU or overheating problem )

Heat sink / Fan is properly mounted ( not loose at all and is flat )

All of the aluminum capacitors on the mother board are perfectly fine ( not leaking / and are on proper )

Reset the mother board a few times....

well thats MOST of the stuff I have done, there is probably more but I can't think of what else I have tried at the moment.
And BTW, can't access BIOS so don't ask if I can get into it.

Any help would be appreciated.

If not do that.

Also, have you tried disconnecting all HDD; Floppy; CD data cables (from the motherboard end (actually I'd do case fan too and front USB connection to motherboard)
If this works, you will need to put one back in at a time, until you find the problem

A:HP Window 7 turns on and shuts off. Shuts off before starting up.

if the computer is staying on but the screen is shutting off; it sounds to me like there could possibly be a loose connector inside the laptop or possibly something going on the with the power supply. If you are not ok with taking the computer apart i would take it to someone to have it looked at. But if you want to try and fix it yourself; i would carefully take out the screws that hold the top cover with the keyboard on it and take off that top cover and see if you see any loose cables or connectors.

Sometimes, but not all the time, when I am able to get it to boot again, it says it's over-heated. Other times it will Say "Overclocking Failed". other times after turning it back on it runs completely normally. The first thing I think of with that symptom is your power supply.

Now normally I would suggest that your power supply could be failing, and that might still be the case, but when I saw that you have only a 450W supply and the components you are trying to run off of it that raises the possibility that the power supply might be just too small for your system. And the older that supply is the more of an issue the size becomes.

Go here: eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and fill out the form to calculate the size your supply should be for your system. The most important box to fill out accurately is the "Capacitor Aging" at the end. That is where the age factor gets worked in.

Hello there,

My firewall I think turns off after a few minutes online. I would navigate to START/connect to/show all connections/....and then I would see the status of my firewall. At the first few minutes, I would see the monitor icon with "padlock" icon with it and along with it saying "connected-firewalled", but then after a few minutes if I would check it again, it then has no "padlock" icon and the "connected-firewalled" status together with it is also GONE????? Does this mean, my firewall if off? I have installed ZoneAlarm recently hoping that my issue about this firewall would be resolved, but still no chance relief, I am still having this problem. Before when I still did not installed ZoneAlarm, I would still get the same "disappearing padlock icon", but if I would check on the Security Center, the status of my windows firewall is turned on. Is there anybody there experiencing the same problem I have? Please help!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks and regards

Hello jzach28,I see you have a HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum.You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system.At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. hello, i have installed 2 case fans to have to air flow. and when i booted the pc couple of mins later, it suddenly turns off. i unplug both of the case fans and did the same thing.

A:computer turns off suddenly

It does sound like a heat issue but just putting fans in the case may not help. It really sounds like the Processor is overheating. So check the fan on the heatsink, make sure it is working, spinning, and try blowing out the fins on the heatsink.

I only had the Internet pulled up and was filling out a form online. And all of a sudden my computer just turned off. This never happened before. I unplugged it and back in and still nothing. I moved it to another outlet and still nothing. My husband tested the power supply with a bolt meter and the power supply has power coming through it. What could be the issue? Could it be the motherboard??

The comp is windows vista, Dell

Someone help :/ cant even do my papers...

also quite recently, ive had 3 blue screens, took it to best buy and they said it might be something with the driver/ram... but idk. just today it said i needed a driver update but when i tried to update... it said that the software could not be found. but idk if thats whats causing the problem.

A:Computer shuts down by itself and turns on by itself

If this is a laptop, remove the battery and use only the AC adapter. See if this fixes the problem. If this is a desktop replace the power supply first...

I've had this problem in the past, but i seemed to fix it each time, but this time i cant get it to work. I was trying to put a cable in my pc the other day and when i moved my pc forward a little, my pc shut off right away. Now when i try to hit the power button, my fan lights will flash on, then turn off. This has happened to me in the past, where i would go to turn on my pc and it wouldn't put no power.

Then i would rest the cmos on the motherboard, a few times, and it would boot up. This time, i went and bought a new 500 watt power supply and the same thing happened. Now i put the new power supply through my power supply tester, and i couldn't get the -5 v to light up, but my old power supply would light up all green. So I think either both power supplies are bad, or the motherboard is shot, or I think some piece of metal is hitting the case, and is causing a short. If the short problem, will my pc work once i fix the metal piece or screw that might of fall behind the motherboard. I think i should take the pc completely apart and plug everything in and see if it works, if it doesn't boot, then I duno what to do. What do you guys think could be the problem?

A:PC turns on and shuts off in tenth of second?

I think your new 500 is broke, it always suprises me how many defective power supplies make it out of the factory.

I've seen computers shut down like that before due to static discharge, but usually letting them rest with no power for a bit (minute or 2) and they will come back on.

I really doubt your motherboard is toast. What I'd do is return your bad 500W and possibly get another one, stick the power supply in, reset cmos, and try to boot up. If that doesn't work, remove and reapply the heatsink on the processor (reapply thermal paste) I'm not sure it would shut down that fast if it wasn't getting a good connection but it might be worth a shot. If that doesn't work, remove the motherboard, make sure you are using the motherboard offset (spacers) so none of it is touching the case. Make sure none of them are missing.

If its still broke you could try minimal booting by disconnecting all but the absolutely essential components (ram, hd, vid card) and adding things back one by one.

Did you try the old powersupply after unplugging it from the wall for a bit and resetting the CMOS? Or did you just get the 500W when it didn't work.

Hello, I really hope someone can help me. This is what happened:
I left my PC on and returned to it 3 hours later, the monitor was asleep as it should be, but when I clicked/moved the mouse and pressed buttons on the keyboard to resume the computer - nothing happened. The PC was on (lights and fans working) but monitor wouldn't turn back on. I held my PC's power button for 5 seconds and it shut down.

When I started it back up again my mouse wouldn't move so I used my keyboard to log onto my admin account, mouse left click and movement were not working, but (weirdly) Right click was working. I decided to plug my mouse out of the USB port and re-connect it to see if that would fix it, but as I pulled it out of the port, my computer shut off instantly.

I tried to turn it on 3-5 times after that, and it would get to bios and restart again by itself, every time. So I pulled the power cord out of the PC and left it for 12 hours. When I came back I plugged it back in and tried to turn it on, now this is the problem I have:
When I press the power button, my PC turns on for half-a-second (fans and lights start working) and then shuts down right away, 3 seconds later it turns on again (by itself) and shuts down again after half-a-second. This would repeat until I either hold the power button for 5 seconds, or just plug it out of the outlet.

I hope someone knows what this might be. Thank you.

Hi all...thanks for reading and hopefully helping.
Dell XPS L502
So when I plug in my ac adapter into my laptop the lights come on for 1/2 a second.  If I unplug the laptop and let it sit for a minute and plug it in again, lights come on for about 3 seconds then shut off.  No fan or anything...yet, keep reading plz.
I have tried the following:  Swapped chargers, swapped batteries, attempt start up without battery, held power button down for 30 seconds, replaced CMOS battery, pulled ram and attempted to start up with one ram(moved them around too), swapped hard drive with my old one that I replaced 3 weeks ago, nothing.
However, when I replaced the CMOS battery it did turn on long enough for keyboard lights to come on, fan to come on and then immediately shut down....maybe 5 seconds.  And, during one attempt of swapping around the RAM it came on with 4 beeps then shut off, indicating a RAM issue.   Don't anticipate that being an issue, but figured it was worth noting and will try RAM from another laptop just to be extra sure.
Last thing that is odd... When I plug in the AC adapter it attempts to start up and then fails as noted, but,  cannot hit the power button to attempt start up again, I have to remove the ac adapter and then reinsert it.  Battery charging light does not stay on with AC adapter inserted.
I assumed it was a power issue since it lit for only a second, but not sure if I should rule that out since replacing CMOS ... Read more
