HP Spectre x360 Stopped Charging/Battery Failure

Q: HP Spectre x360 Stopped Charging/Battery Failure

I've had this laptop a year and a half, no prior problems and I was using it yesterday. When I woke up this morning I put the laptop on the charger for thirty minutes before I realized it said "plugged in, not charging". I did some research, reinstalled battery devices through the Device Manager, no luck. Then I ran a battery test on the startup and found out that my battery is failing.Battery Check: Primary- Replace(42)FAILURE ID: PUSNKD-7KQ8A7-MFPWMG-C0CW03PRODUCT ID: L0Q52UA#ABA

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear Customer, After seeing the first instance of an HP Battery Alert message, you should consider replacing your battery with a new battery soon. What if I continue to use the battery after seeing the HP Battery Alert message? As with all rechargeable batteries, your battery will continue to gradually lose storage capacity with time and use. This loss of capacity will continue even after the HP Battery Alert appears, so continued use of the battery could result in an unplanned system shutdown How long is the battery warranty? Most HP notebook computer batteries are warranted for a period of one (1) year from the later of the notebook computer manufacture date or the date on your valid proof of purchase. The lap top charging led no longer lights up and the battery doesn't charge. About 1 wk after warranty expired (end of APril) i turned one the laptop and used it for a while when a warning poped up indicating low battery and asked to connect to AC. Once plugged in, I noticed that the led light did not come on nor the power icon indicated AC. Searched this forum and found Re: My HP Spectre 360 laptop crashed suddenly and won't charge.Just before the the battery emptied, I  managed to complete the suggestion including hard reset and UEFI hardware test. Which passed. Along the way, I noticed NO beeps or power led blinking. Also, used a multimeter to measured the output of the charger when plugged into AC which showed similar measurements as for another HP charger. Unfortunately this charge's plug won't fit the Specter. The laptop is now unusable. Am hoping someone can help me recover this laptop and my investement. Thanks in advance.

A few days ago while I`m working on my laptop I noticed that it stopped charging, there was a message: "Plugged in, not charging". I tried to charge it with a different( 100% working charger) and it didn`t help. After I unplugged the chargers I noticed that the charging led keeps lighting even though it shouldn`t.The next day I tried to go over the steps of a soultion that an HP tech guy suggested here in the forums:Step 1. Go to Device ManagerStep 2. Select BatteriesStep 3. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed thereStep 4. Click UninstallStep 5. At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driverStep 6. Shutdown the computerStep 7: Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in It seemed like the solution worked cause the charging led started to work properly and while the laptop was on there was the normal message: "Charging", even though it didn`t charge, I saw the battery drains as the percents go lower and lower every couple of minutes. Now, I don`t have any more battery left and when I plug it in nothing happens and the led doesn`t work anymore. Please help me. I really don`t know how it happened, this latop is less than 2 years old and I rearly use it so there isn`t any chance that the battery is dead.Thank you.

Went to work on my Spectre x360 today and the battery/power indicator showed 12% left and it wasn't charging...even though it was plugged in.  I quickly turned it off to try conserve power but now it won't turn on. I did notice that when it was on, the white light next to the power plug was blinking. Any ideas? Have never had this happen before.  Pretty frustrated.  I'm out of warranty but have only had the computer for about 18 months.

I recently purchased my laptop this past April and it has stopped charging.  I thought it was the charger since my guinea pig chewed the mickey mouse cable a bit, so I got a replacement in the mail.  However, replacing the cable did not solve the issue.  The partially chewed cable worked up until the day I installed Windows 10, coincidentally.  I'm just wondering if it's possible that installing Windows 10 could have caused some unkown bug to cause my laptop to stop charging.  I really don't think it's the charger since it is brand new.  Please can anybody help me?  Thank you. P.S. The laptop battery is dead so I cannot turn it on to check drivers or bios.

Made UEFI diagnostic which succesfully passed. Now I have no idea. Always use original charger only and with stable power supply. Condition of charger is new. Hi, I own the HP Spectre x360 - 15-ap012dx (ENERGY STAR), which came preconfigured from Best Buy with the UHD display and 256gb SSD. I have two questions about this device: 1. Can I upgrade the SSD to an NVMe PCI-e SSD such as the Samsung 960 EVO (which is an M.2 SSD). I know a recent BIOS update added support for new Samsung SSDs, but I want to make sure before I buy one. 2. Can I charge my Spectre via the USB-C port? From what I understand, it might support USB Power Delivery (it's a 3.0 port, not a new Thunderbolt 3 port) Thanks!

Any solutions? Thank you

I will buy the spectre x360 if I can confirm it supports my setup: I need to connect 2 external monitors (both with thunderbolt 3 to mDP cable). This is possible, right? Then, and that is what i cannot confirm anywhere, is there a way to charge the spectre without disconnecting one of the screens? I am OK if that requires a special adapter (I have seen thunderbolt to hdmi atapters where you can connect a USB-C charger ). I just really need to confirm this setup is possible, as my setup require 3 screens (2 + spectre's)  and don't want to disconnect a screen to charge the spectre. One battery charge is not enough to last me the whole day.

A:Spectre x360 2 external monitors and charging

The Spectre x360 has two USB Type-C power connector and Thunderbolt ports. You can connect them to two displays that has a USB-Type-C connector. You will have to disconnect one to charge the Spectre. It is an ultrabook, and not chargeable with the single USB 3.0 port. Displays with thunderbolt portshttps://www.google.nl/search?q=LCD+displays+with+thunderbolt+ports&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-... The main battery in the Spectre 360x is stated to provide up to 15 hours of use.  There is an accessory http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-powerup-backpack available that will provide plenty of power for your ultrabook.

I have three different original power adapters and I have the same issue with all of them. I have also tried to disable the keyboard baclighting since I read that could cause issues previously. I don't really want to send this one back too since I think that the third laptop will have the same issue. I just bought the new (KabyLake) Spectre 13" x360 and I like the machine in most ways but I wonder if I have received a unit with unusually "flaky" charging / USB ports or if this model in general is built like this? When charging one has to really "push" USB  C contact into the port in order for it to start (the LED to light up) and if I just move the machine or the charger slightly about it stops charging. At work I have an Elite X2 that also has USB C charging port but it is much more "solid" in its operation and is not experiencing this problem... So any experiences - is this an issu with the model or with my machine only?

With my new Spectre x360, I have 3 powered USB 3 ports. I need to disable having power going to one of them. My Garmin 3597 will not be recognised on this notebook when I connect my device, for upgrading the maps, unless it is a pure data port..."no charging". Is there some way to be able to disable having power go to one of the USB 3 ports. Would be a great feature if I could do this. I know you can disable the charging of the ports when in sleep mode, hibernation mode and off in the BIOS, but how to disable 1 or if not possible, all , when powered on. Any one have any ideas ?

This laptop will not charge. It does not even recognize that it is plugged in. I have tried multiple wall outlets and adapters and none of them work. The orange light next to the charge port never comes on or flicker or anything like that. Everything with this laptop is in perfect condition and i have used it lightly. I have seen from others that this is either a charging connector issue or a motherboard issue? What chance do i have to fix this at reasonable cost? Will HP help me out because this is clearly a manufacturing defect even though I am out of warranty? I bought it in 2015 and the warranty expired a few months ago.

Read a lot of threads on this forum that it is not repairble. i have spent $1800 on this, and cannot give up just like that. Please help me with a solution.

A:Spectre x360 charging issues - dead laptop

Please do not be upset, and lets figure out whats wrong with the charging first.  Firstly try to change the wall socket and, do not use any surge protectors in this process.  Now remove the battery, if it can be removed, and remove the AC Adapter and the devices connected.( if battery is not removable, continue without removing it ) Then press the power button for 1 minute and then reinsert the battery, and the charger.  Check if there is any LED on the charging port.  If white/amber its charging.  Now, try to power on the computer.   Reply back if this helps. If no LED indicator, the power supply could be bad, else the adapter.  Check with another charger(if available), if not, you will need to get in touch with HP support.  Thanks.

Hi people.I have been wanting to charge my 2016 spectre x360 (15 inch) laptop with a usb charger since i bought it. I know hp sell a usb charger that should work but i want to use an aftermarket one. Mainly because i want to use a 2 pin power cord so that i can use a folding uk plug with it. (UK plugs are chunky for those that don't know). Also would like the option to charge from any compatible usbc charger i come across along with battery banks etc) I know the 13 inch model got a bios upgrade last year to fix this but even though i did a bios update on mine i cant get my charger to work. Its an Anker A2053 USB-C power delivery power port thing. nothing happens when i plug it in. not even an error message. i have the bios upgrade for this from the 26th october 2016, there is nothing newer that i can see. has anyone got this model working with an aftermarket usbc charger? cheers Rob

Could not be more upset with HP. As I search the forums I am seeing so many people with this problem and looks like me the college student is the next on the list. My spectre x360 is just over a year old, shocking just past it's warranty, and the motherboard fried itself. I paid nearly 1400 dollars for this laptop as an investment in college. Now I'm only praying a local repair shop can salvage the memory. I'm left without a laptop during exam month and have lost all my college work. I was then asked at tech support to pay them nearly 700 dollars just to look at my laptop. I will honestly never buy from HP again, I paid good money I saved for college on a laptop I loved and it is now gone with HP refusing to help me out in any way. I took care of this laptop like a child had protective casing and everything not a dent or scratch to be seen, clearly a problem with HP and they won't fix it. So dissapointed.

Before starting graduate school in August 2015, I decided I was done with the few mediocre laptops I had during undergrad and saved up all summer to buy a $1100 Spectre 360x with the Core i7 processor. Approximately 6 months later in January 2016, my laptop abruptly failed to turn on with zero warning signs. I called HP technical support and, because I was under warranty at the time, I was able to send my laptop in to get fixed free of charge with no problems (minus the 2 weeks I had to go without a working laptop while being a full time graduate engineering student). Once I got the laptop back, everything worked fine and I was only told that their was a "problem with motherboard" and no further information about the defect.  I wish I could say that this was the end of my problems, but this week (now a little less than a year and a half after initally purchasing the laptop), the same problem has occured AGAIN. With no warning signs at all, the laptop fails to turn on. To make things even worse, this happened to happen during one of the worst weeks it could have - I was in such a bind that I had to pay $150 for geek squad to scrape my harddrive for a number of documents I needed that afternoon and then another $170 for a cheap Lenovo laptop at a local Best Buy so I could finish the work that I had to be completed that evening. After the debacle, I called HP tech support, only to find out that I would have to pay $715 to get the laptop sent to HP tech s... I have a problem with my HP Spectre x360. The computer had always been very relaible, fast, and showed no signs of any system failures. I was very satisfied with my choice in the HP Spectre x360. Then while I was web browsing, out of no where i hear a light pop sound and the everything including the screen, keyboard leds, and charging led went blank. The computer did not respond to hard restart or to plugging into the AC power adaptor. I am very dissappointed that a such a high quality and highly priced device failed after just 1 year and 8 months!
This could not have been any worse timing as there are only two weeks left in the sesmester and I have projects, presentations, and notes all saved on the harddrive. Seeing that there have been numerous other customers with the exact same issue I would assume that there is some sort of defect in the motherboard that should have been recalled.

My HP Spectre x360 was a super awesome computer. I really enjoyed the design, the keyboard, the touchscreen response and it's overall processing speeds. I enjoyed it so much that I even recommended it to friends as a college student, and those friends then went on to buy this laptop. All was well until one day my laptop crashed. Thinking it was the battery dying, I tried plugging in my AC adapter. Unfortunately, it didn't charge my laptop. After borrowing my friend's charger that I knew worked on my laptop, I found that this also would not charge my laptop. Running out of options, I sent my computer to certified HP service center and apparently the problem is with the motherboard and the DC in port. I was very disappointed to find the the cost of these replacement parts would be upwards of $650, which is more than 50% of the cost of the laptop itself!! This was incredibly disappointing news to hear especially since this laptop is only a year and a half old (conveniently outside of warranty) and is supposedly a higher end model. One would think this laptop should last for at least 3-4 years. On top of that, I now have friends and family who got this laptop on my recommendation and will likely suffer from the same fate. As a college student, this is a major inconvenience. Not only do I have to juggle borrowiong laptops and using public computers to finish daily assignments, I am now expected to pay hundreds of dollars for a replacement part that should not be mal... Hi,  I was not super sure as to where to post this so I put "Notebook Video, Display and Touch".So I bought this new HP Spectre x360 about a week ago during the cyber sales in preparation for classes at University next semester as I was wanting something small, lightwieght, and with a long lasting battery that could get me though the shcool day. I love everything about this laptop except it seems to have a very short battery life. When I bought it, all the tech reviews and the official HP website claimed an 11 to 12 hour battery life, however I cannot seem to get more than around 4 or 5. Perhaps the battery is bad?I do not know too much about computers so I had my brother help me choose the model. I have the i7 6500u, 16gbs of ram, and a 512gb SSD. My brother said with these specific components, the battery life could be effected a little bit but was under the impression that it would still be able to serve me at least 8 hours while at school. Should I contact HP support about the battery life problem? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

The battery life on the Spectre x360 that I got two months ago is absolutely dissapointing. Running the default installation of Windows, I'm lucky to get 3.5 hours of battery life using the HP Recommended powerplan while browsing the internet on a stable WiFi network. I have been working with this computer for two months now and after two hours I have to plug it in. Is there anything that I can do to fix this issue or would my best bet be to contact HP directly? I bought this laptop solely based off of the claims that it could get up to 12 hours on battery and the fact that I'm lucky to see a third of that is upsetting.

I bought a brand new hp spectre x360 last December 2016 because I was amaze of the features being advertised at Best Buy Station Square Burnaby, CA store and they order it for me. When I got my order which I'm expecting it's brand new product, however after 2 weeks of using it I observed that the battery life has short period of time to think that I fully charged it. Because of these I return my laptop in the store to give complain regarding this matter. The store took it for repair and until now it's almost a month I haven't received any update regarding the status of my laptop. And I'm paying for the laptop which I haven't use. Kindly address this issue and hoping to hear from HP company soon.

I recently bought my Spectre x360 and overall I am very happy with my purchase. However, I am a bit concerned with battery life. For my version (i7 processor and UHD screen) I am only achieving about 5 hours usage from each charge. I had expected nearer 9 hours from the adverts for the model. Reading messages from other users I seem to find that to achieve nearer 9 hours i should lower screen brightness to about 50%. Surely the main reason for buying a notebook with a UHD-4K screen is for the display to be bright especially when watching videos (Nertflix, iPlayer etc).Any suggestions about improving battery life please

My x360 QHD Spectre has a low battery life in the beginning it has a 7 hour life with medium brightness then it's like 4:30 hours with Battery Saver on mode and I already removed bloatware and I only watch movies on it but when I game it's 2:30 hours (Fan gets loud and laptop gets hot) I'm pretty sure the battery life should be 10 hours

Today after installing windows update (synaptics-pointing drawing), my sound has stopped working on my HP Spectre x360.  I tried looking at the drivers but there are no drivers listed. All my sound keys on my keyboard are dead, it's as if there's no sound installed anywhere on the laptop.  My laptop information is as follows:  Product Name: HP Spectre x360 Convertible Product Number: N1R85UA#ABA In device manager I have Conexant ISST Audio and Intel Display Audio listed under sound, video and controllers.  I think I saw another user had an update pushed to his laptop, I'm hoping there's a similar easy solution for mine to get it up and running again. Please advise.

A:HP Spectre x360 Sound Stopped Working

Hi, Try the following. Download the Conexant HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp77501-78000/sp77502.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Conexant device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72025.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Conexant installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

[Re-posting after the first one mysteriously disappeared] Have any Spectre x360 owners experienced motherboard fallures like the one illustrted below? This Best Buy purchased unit is a 1.5 years old. A capacitor appears to have melted down (see RED box), causing the until not to power on (nor will the Power LED light with an AC adpater connected).

hello, I have a brand new HP Spectre x360, and am very happy with it. However, the battery is getting drained when the laptop is shut-off (not in sleep mode, but really shut-off, by using the windows start button). From 100% to 90% in one week time, and even down to 0% if left for some weeks.I'm wondering if this is due to a problem with the battery (or some other manufacturing issue), or if itīs caused by some kind of setting that causing the computer to not completely shut down for example. Could the farst start-up have anything to do with it? Is there any setting I should change?  Would really appreciate your help as this doesn't seem normal for a completely new computer... Thanks!

I don't use my Spectre X360 daily but I find it strange that every time I want to use it, the battery seems completely empty. If I power down the device and store it for 5-6 days the system won't even switch on as the battery is dead and power button no longer responds. One time I left it untouched for almost 2 weeks and I could not even get it to charge using the usb-c charger supplied with it. I had to keep it connected to powersocket, wait 10 minutes and then boot and then let it drain below 10% before it would re-charge again when switched off. The powericon showed 15% battery status and connected to mains but kept displaying "....not charging"Hybernation is switched off, the power button is acting as real power down and I have modified energysettings several times but nothing seems to solve my poor battery life. Is this normal behaviour ??? If so... the device is completely useless as it won't even last 1.5 hrs simple browsing behaviour and it goes dead when switched off. A mobile device that needs to be connected to main power all the time is not mobile but acts as desktop. If I would need a desktop I wouldn't have bought an expensive HP Spectre for sure.... How can this issue be fixed ?

I have a RavPower external battery pack that doesn't have a connector tip for my Spectre X360 laptop.  Does anyone know the size of the tip on the end of the power adapter, or better yet, where to buy one that will work?

I know this question has been asked already but I too need a solution to the HP Spectre x360's very, very poor battery life. I struggle to manage 2 hours on this, with brightness at the max (I need it like that). I've seen other people managing 5-6 hours and thats all I really need. If someone could tell me how they managed to get that, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

I just bought the Spectre 360 and am having the same overheating issues as above.  One of the main reasons for the purchase was the hyperbaric cooling system so the laptop would not overheat.  This one is so hot to the touch within an hour of turning it on that it burns my leg if I am using it on my lap.  When on a table, the bottom vents are covered but the side vents are not.  This is a laptop, it is not built to carry around a cooling table, it is meant to be portable.  Mine is less than 12 hours old and I feel as though I need to return it too.  Any updates to this issue before I do that? Thanks.

A:Spectre X360 battery life issue!

Greetings for the day dqthehoang, Regarding the battery life and battery backup that has been mentioned here, when the unit says battery upto 12hours, on a idle situation the battery life is upto 12hours or when you are using minimal applications, There are certain applications which would use more battery power, check when you are using any particular application if the battery drains, try updating BIOS through HP.com and Try running battery test through HPSA to check the functionality of the battery, Perform battery calibration on a timely manner to keep the battery in good shape. Regards,Zoan  Please click ?Accept as Solution ? if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.Click the ?Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say ?Thanks? for helping!

I bought the i7, QHD version of the Spectre convertible laptop two days before Christmas. Overall, I think it's a great product - which makes it even sadder that I'm thinking of returning it.The advertisements said 11 hours of battery life. Now, obviously that's not going to be accurate for normal everyday usage, but the salespeople in the store (and common sense) said that it would probably still get at least an eight hour, more like nine hour battery life on a single charge. Nope! FOUR HOURS. That's ridiculous. That's just over a third of the advertised battery life.I thought (and still think) it might be an issue with the battery itself, as the computer runs really really hot - it's basically impossible to put this thing on my lap at times. Which is annoying. But I did the HP Support Assistant battery check and it said it was fine, and then I did the BIOS battery check and it passed. And then the HP staff member I was chatting with on the support system had the gall to say "4 hours is actually really good". NO, IT IS NOT REALLY GOOD. Similar laptops in this category get about 7 hours of real time use. I bought this computer in large part because of that puported long battery life, and all the reviews said that the battery life was pretty great - none mentioned being four hours. Were reviewers sent different computers? And this four hours is not playing video games on full brightness settings. No. This four hours is on 25% brightness, power saver mode on, battery saver mode ... Read more

A:Spectre x360 Battery Life and heat

Hi there @jamiethehornsby?,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums. I wanted to reach out to you and help! I understand that your HP Spectre x360 Notebook PC is overheating. I would like to address the overheating before dealing with the battery. You said that you had run battery test's and they passed. Do you have the Notebook ventilated? What do you sit your Notebook on when you are using it?Have you done any updates using Windows Updates or the HP Support Assistant? Here is a document for you called Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating.  Please follow the troubleshooting steps to see if it reduces the heat (and in turn that should help with the battery).  Updating your Notebook BIOS has been the solution for some, stopping apps from starting when the Notebook powers on for others. Some people have found that the Accepted Solution was simply doing another Windows Update. Some of the steps that you need to perform are in the following headings: Updating your Notebook computer BIOS - This document provides step by step instructions for you to follow. Using Windows Task Manager to identify corrupt processes: Services that you do not use (other than Microsoft services) can be shut down to minimize CPU usage. Other st...
