External hard drive suddenly not showing and unassigned

Q: External hard drive suddenly not showing and unassigned

Hi all,
I am at my wits end.
I stupidly relied on my Western Digital external to back up all my photography, and today its not showing in My Computer.

When I go to 'manage drives' it shows but is unassigned and when I right click there is no option to assign a letter to the drive. I should point out it does show in device manager.

I tried unplugging it, putting it in a different USB port and also tried it on my lap top and its not showing.

After reading a couple of suggestions I tried a programme called Partition Find and Mount, I didnt know what I was doing but it found the drive and asked me to mount it. I changed the drive letter and after a while it showed the contents in Windows Explorer, which leads me to believe that my stuff is recoverable (I pray).

Can anyone tell me how to get my drive to be recognised again?

I recommend downloading and trying SP Photo Recovery. It will help find and retrieve your lost files.

I've used it in the past to recover photos, music, videos, and other multimedia files, regardless if the file has been deleted, lost, damaged or corrupted.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/UDbKNE. (This link will open the download page so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, I have 32 bit Windows Vista, I use an external 250GB external hard drive that I have never had a problem with until last night. I was messing around on my computer last night, everything working perfectly, I went and brushed my teeth which took about 15 minutes, and when I came back suddenly there's a message that says windows cannot recognize this device, and a dialog box comes up and says that I need to reformat it. I pretty much stored everything on that(200 GB worth of data), not to mention i have a seperate linux install on there. I tried it another computer with the same results. I'm lost as to what caused it, and if there is anything I can do to save the data, Is there anything I can do? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

For the last 5 months, I've been using a Western Digital external hard drive that was given to me by a friend. I don't know exactly what model my hard drive is or where to find that information. Up until yesterday, it had been working flawlessly, but now it seems to have malfunctioned.

Normally, when I plug the USB cable into the computer, the drive ("G:") shows up in "My Computer" within a couple of minutes. Now, however, after plugging in the cable the drive never shows up. I googled for help on this issue, and most of the resources I found told me to look for the drive in the "Device Manager" or in "Computer Management > Disk Management," but it doesn't show up in either of those places, so I'm not sure what I should do. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, and also restarting my computer, but neither of those things helped. I also tried using a different USB cable, and that didn't solve my problem either.

The USB port that I plugged the cable into is functional; both my mouse and my laptop fan work when I plug them into that port. However, when I plug the harddrive into that port, I don't hear the "ding" sound that I usually hear when other devices, like a flash drive, are plugged in. The harddrive also seems to be properly plugged into my power strip, as there the green light on the harddrive is still lit up.

I'm currently using Windows Vista. Any help would b... Read more

A:External hard drive suddenly not working

The external hard drive could be failing, or there could be corruption (partition table etc...) It's possible that data recovery software can recover the files that are currently on the drive. Since the drive can't be detected at all in Windows, that may be your only option.

By the way, it's possible that the drive itself is still intact, but could have corruption of some type causing the drive not to be detected (for example; a corrupt partition table). In that situation, data recovery to backup the data is needed, then a re-format of the drive should return it to proper working condition.

I have restored an image created by Macrium from my external hard disk which became now unllocated for reasone I didn't now. After the restoration successfuly completed, I closed the macrium environement. Then, after my computer restarted I found that there is a window telling me this:
Windows Manager Boot:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1- insert your windows installation dis and restart your computer.
2-choose your language settings and then click 'next'
3- click repair your computer.
if you don't have this disc, conatact your system adminstrator.

I booted from Macrium Secure CD version 4.0, which has an option to fix the boot error. Then, I choose fix boot error.

Master Boot Recored
Unique Hard Code
Boot Database configuration

NOTE: I have run boot fixing while my external hard drive is connecting to my computer, is this the reasone causing my external hard drive became unlocated.

After fixing Boot, my system booted correctely.
However, I was shocked that my external hard dirve which mostly has all my very important data has been unllocated. So my system didn't recognised my hard drive.

So I recently purchased and installed a new hard drive in my PS3. To do that I had to reformat my Western Digital 250 GB hard drive to FAT32 format. Ok, so that's all well and good but I then decided to take my PS3, 60 GB HD (the brand escapes me, but it's a big manufacturer of hard drives) and put it in an external hard drive enclosure. I figured that it's a perfectly good hard drive so there was no sense wasting it. Anyway, as technologically impaired as I might sound after this (which I'm really not) I feel compelled to divulge that I actually did not know that two external hard drives shouldn't be too close to each other. As soon as I put one on top of the other, the 60 GB hard drive beeped and a message popped up saying it needed reformatting. So after reformatting everything a second time, I plugged in the hard drives and the 60 GB one showed up but my 250 GB one did not. It's showing up everywhere else (disk management, device manager) but not in My Computer. So I have no access to it at all. Also, I did not need to reformat the 250 GB HD since my computer gave me no message indicating that I should. I'd rather only use reformatting as an absolute last resort since it takes HOURS but if it's necessary that I'll have to break down. Throw other options at me first though.

If I lost you in the midst of all that jumble, tell me, I'd be happy to explain further.

I tried to find it in disk management, however, it is not found there either. I'm not sure what else to do to access my information.

Hi everybody. I have a problem My 3TB Western Digital Hard Drive is not showing up on any PC I connect it to. The light on the drive itself is on, but no where on the PC does it register.

I am pretty sure the disks aren't spinning either, but that is probably because the computer isn't picking it up, and no vice-versa. Any help with this?

A:External Hard Drive not showing up anywhere

Please fill in your specs.
Some motherboards require that you configure the BIOS to accept larger drives (2, 3Gb>).
If you're positive that the disks aren't spinning, then that's a red flag as to why the computer doesn't see the drive.

My entire life is on my external hard drive - it's supposed to be my back up. Now I have an issue with that.

I'm running XP with all updated security profiles and the latest SP. I have an external hard drive that has been working fine on this box, but recently, the computer isn't recognizing it. It gives me the whole "driver not found" scenario. But it can't find the driver anywhere on the net, my computer, or anywhere else.

It's a Western Digital hard drive, and I think it's called a Passport drive. Apparently, talking to my dad, they're ****ty little drives. Which sucks. All my music, pictures, and writing (freelance and published fiction writer) was on this drive cause I was going from one box to another.

Help! Please tell me that my data is at least salvageable!!!

I'm having quite a problem here. My external hard drive (Astone - 2Tb) isn't showing up on my computer - or anybody else's. I lent it to a friend, and I believe he may have been rough with it (The base is missing 2 screws), and after receiving it back the following day, I plugged it into my laptop. It came up with "Installing device driver software" which is odd, since I've used it on there many times before. Afterward, it would flash in My Computer for a second coloured grey, then disappear. It does not appear in Safety Removal Hardware either. I've tried this on several computers, but with no difference, and the blue light still works. The problem is definitely with the Hard Drive, since thumbdrives still work fine. Reformatting isn't an option, because there are important, irreplaceable files on there. It does, however, show up in control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. I still can't access it though - When I right-click and go to browse files "Removable Disk (D: )" is written in grey. Is there anything you tech geniuses can do to help? I'm really getting desperate here...

A:External hard drive not showing up on my PC

Hello there,

There are a lot of different reasons for an HDD to stop showing. A few things you can try are:

Try using a different USB cable, make sure it is as short as the original one, or even shorter. This is important it terms of providing enough power for the drive to function properly.

Try connecting it to different USB ports.

Try connecting it to a different PC.

Sometimes the drive can misbehave due to insufficient power even if it appears to be spinning make sure you connect the HDD directly to the USB port and not through a USB hub.

Check if you can see the HDD in Windows Device Manager and in Disk Management. Good luck.

I usually use the hard drive with the desktop, however the other day I plugged it into the laptop, it was running at the time, and was accidentally unplugged, since then it doesn't seem to be recognized in either computer. The laptop will make the noise when I plug in the external drive, and it shows up in device and printers. It does not show up in computer management though. I have tried the chkdsk, but it wont work, I am pretty sure I have the right letter, but says no volume. Please help.

Just an add on, the hard drive does light up, but does not spin. I did try installing it in the desktop, but it was not recognized when I tried that.

After awhile of being plugged in the hard drive shows up in disk managment, however when I try to Initialize it, it says I/O Error

A:External Hard Drive not showing up.

Hello jimithing33 ,

Getting an I/o error usually isn't a good sign as often it's related to failed hardware. I guess you already tried using different USB port and cable. What model is this HDD? Is it power fed through the USB cable? You could run the manufacturer’s diagnostics tool to see if it will detect it.

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Hi guys. About a week ago, a weird msg started popping up about my external (F:) hard drive, after which nothing inside of it would show up anymore.
If I clicked on a folder, there'd be nothing in it. Then if I unplugged, and re-plugged, it would all be back like nothing happened.
Yesterday, the D: drive disappeared from the population list in My Computer altogether, and no matter what I do it doesn't return. I've only tried plugging into different ports and restarting, but that's all I know how to do. I was going to system restore and see if that helped, but this message came up on the screen:
"Changes made to drive(s) D: after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from system restore monitoring, or was turned off or removed"
I have no idea what to do. Literally everything is on that drive. Any suggestions? And thanks in advance for any help, it'd be appreciated.

Hey, so I've done a series of things to my computer over the past couple days, and my own impatience and naitivity led to some pretty devastating results. None of which I can understand leading to my external hardrive malfunctioning, however the timing of it deciding to stop working is coincidental enough for me to be curious to see if anyone here can give me some insight into my situation.

A lot of this probably has nothing to do with my hard drive going to ****, but I'll just start from the beginning as to try to not forget any important details that might suggest some solutions to my problem.

Anyways I bought this Dell 1537 laptop earlier this year for school/recording purposes, as well as just a general/portable upgrade from my home desktop computer.

This computer came stock with Vista 64-bit OS, Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU T3400 @ 2.17Ghz, 4 gigs of ram, 250GB hard drive, etc.

Overall the performance of the computer was quite nice and worked well for most of what I needed it for. However Vista was not handling my recording software very well (I think it was mainly the drivers not working well with my firewire recording interface). Long story short, I decided I wanted to have the computer boot Windows XP, which happens to run the software flawlessly. Hey everyone, I've officially got THE worst luck with technology EVER.

Today, my Western Digital 500GB External HDD has stopped working. One minute it's working fine - the next its completely unresponsive. I deleted a music folder off the hard drive that wouldnt play and I dont know if that's been the cause of it to become unstable.

When I plug it in via USB I can feel the disk spinning inside and loading, but the windows sound does not play. About 2-3 minutes later I get the sound but it does not appear under Hard Disk Drives on My Computer. When I try to go into device manager it crashes windows explorer.

After a couple of attempts the name is now "Local Disk I:' and not even 'Elements'

After about 10-15 minutes of being plugged in the drive clicks and won't do anything else.

I REALLY need some of the work off the hard drive - It's so important to my second year at university.

Any help you can give me I will be eternally grateful. Call me a *******, but I usually back up my work via dropbox anyway but theres some bits I didnt back up yet and it's so important I get them.

I've looked at getting a universal drive adaptor but i've heard about data recovery software but there seem to be so many out there - If my hard drive isnt completely screwed could someone reccomend me one or give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

However, even though it says that the hard drive is hooked up to the computer, I am unable to actually find it under my computer.

I stopped messing with it due to the fact that I have pictures on this hard drive and much more. I do not want to lose them. I need to take some time out of my day and actually burn these images onto discs so that way I don't lose them completely.

First, I apologize if this question has been posted before but I tried searching on this site for the answer but didn't seem to find one. Here is my problem. After many calls to Toshiba and taking it back to the store of purchase, the only answer I get is: Format it! So after creating the recovery cds I have to back up bazillions of files. My brother is letting me use his hard drive which is in a SSK USB enclosure. Unfortunately I do not know the make of the hard drive in the enclosure and he is away so I cannot ask him. Here is the problem:
1. I plug it into the USB port and the laptop makes the sound of finding new hardware and the little icon appears saying "safely remove hardware"
2. I click on My Computer and the hard drive is no where to be found
3. I clicked on Device Manager and I can see it under USB Mass Storage Device
4. I go to Disk Management and I can see it as Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized

I have never connected an external hard drive before so I'm a little scared to Initialize it because I know my brother has lots of files already stored on it and I do not want to erase them. I know he did have it connected to his Mac pc and his Macbook so i'm not sure if this is what is causing the problem. i have a seagate backup plus 5 tb drive that's around 3 months old and has worked fine up until now. something happened, no idea what, but now it shows almost no free space. the drive is completely empty, and it only has 236 kb of available drive space. i've looked in disk management and everything looks fine there. all 4600 gb is showing up. when i try adding a file over 236 kb, it says there's not enough space. formatting the drive didn't help. currently using fat, but i tried formatting ntfs and it said windows was unable to complete the format. anyone got any suggestions?

I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.

When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.

I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.

I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.

Thank you in advance!

A:External hard drive not showing in My Computer

Hey pcrquals. I would try the drive in another pc to narrow down where the problem is, a problem with the drive itself, or a problem with the pc recognizing the drive, which might be a problem with the USB port(s) or with the USB drivers. Does another USB device like a flashdrive work when plugged into the same port?

I'm having some problems with my Transcend StoreJet external hard drive. I had it for a while now and it was working normally until now. At first, it seemed to be fine but when I clicked on it on My Computer it asked me to format the drive. I thought that was strange so I unplugged it and re-plugged it back in. But it now doesn't even show up on My Computer anymore. I checked on Device Manager and it's there. I tried re-installing the driver but that didn't help. Please help me. I have important files on the hard drive.

I've looked at various threads and still cannot solve this issue.

My Seagate Portable Drive seems to work as the green light comes on.

Screen shot of my Disk Management below. Am I missing something?

Other solutions have been to right click and assign a drive, but those listed below other that the C: don't allow.

Using OS Windows 8.1
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I have had a WD Hard drive connected to my computer for over a year and since added a second one in a 'firewire' daisy chain. The original is a 250G and the new one is a 500G. BOTH have been working for months but, on occasion, one or the other "disappears".

In the past I have restarted my computer and it shows up but, that is not happening this time. Oddly enough the one that is NOT showing up is the original 250G HD. My computer recognizes the 500G that is 'daisy chained' to it but NOT the original 250G.

How does this happen? Can I prevent this in the future? And...more importantly ... how can I fix this??

Thank you for any help you can provide

Hi guys,
I bought a brand new buffalo ministation 500gb hard drive, plugged it into my laptop and everything as working fine.It was recognised in my computer and i proceeded to transfer a file from another external hard drive onto it.This caused my laptop to freeze,so i removed my new hard drive and so the problems began
The hard drive shows up in device manager and disc management but not in my computer
In disc management,it is under Disc 2,offline and not initialised and is unallocated.
When i try and initialize or right click offline i get the message "I/O device error"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating

I have tried different USB ports and USB cables to no avail

A:External Hard Drive Not Showing On My Computer

"i get the message "I/O device error"

That almost certainly indicates that the drive in question is faulty. It's by no means unheard of for a new drive to be faulty.

I have 3 external hard drives from old laptops. I purchased a refurbished Dell Desktop PC 18 months ago. I've never had to use my old drives with it, until now... and they don't seem to show up anywhere and I can't access the data. Can anyone help please? Thankyou

A:External Hard Drive Not Showing On Desktop PC :(

are these all connected via a USB
sounds like a PC issue if ALL three are not seen
What windows version do you have on the new PC
and what Windows version was on the PC you use to copy the drives

Are they in a case - does the case need power , is that working on all three drives?

I am having an issue with a Seagate external USB hard drive that I have connected to my Windows 7 PC. It is powered on when I start my computer. When I go to "my computer" to look for the drive, it is not there. I disconnect power to the drive and hear the Windows hardware disconnect sound, leading me to believe that Windows did acknowledge that is was indeed connected. I plug the hard drive back in and suddenly the drive shows up and all is well. Why is this happening and what can I do to make it work normally?

I'll also add that when I start my computer with the drive turned off, when I do power up the drive...nothing. It only seems to work when the drive is on when Windows is started. Any ideas?

When I plugged my WD External Hard Drive into my laptop, it asked me to format the disk before using. So I tried to format but failed. Then I used KillDisk to kill it.

Now whenever I plug the external drive into my laptop or desktop, it is not showing up in My Computer but its light still flashes. Can someone please help me out? How can I make it work again?

Many thanks in advance.

I have a 1.5TB WD external hard drive. It was running extremely slow so i ran a defrag and it fixed it. But it also has a mac partition on it so i ran the repair disk thing for mac in disk utility.
However my mac is a laptop so it ran out of battery part way through the operation. Now when i plug it in it both the mac and PC it is not picked up in explorer and Disk management (under computer management).

So no partitions show up in either finder on mac or explorer on windows

Edit: When i connect the hard drive it has a flashing light on it like it normally does when it connecting to pc just before it shows up in explorer. It has been flashing like this for hours as it has been plugged into pc this whole time. when it connects and shows up in explorer and is not in use that light normally stays solid

A:Need help with a external hard drive not showing up in explorer

I'd start with test disk:
FWIW: I have Ubuntu on my Netbook. If I start a lengthy operation like defrag on battery, it will ask me if I really want to do that. I've run into a number of prompts like that, and it makes me wonder why Windows never figured that out.

I've attched my 160gb external hard rive to my laptop and it shows up in the device manager under disk drives and USB but does not show on my computer and is unusable.

A:External hard drive not showing in my computer

It depends on your operating system. From past experience XP has no problem, older versions of windows need the correct driver and win95 early version wont see it at all.

Hope that helps. Rik.

I've removed the poll, as it did not pertain to this thread. Also, you are going to have to give us more info, such as the make/model of the external drive, has it ever worked, size of it, error messages (if any), etc.
