Problem with Drives and Folder Option

Q: Problem with Drives and Folder Option

I am having problems with my comp. I got a virus from somewhere, i don't know. I then went in to safe mode and scanned my comp using AVG. I got some infections and they were moved to quarantine. I then formatted my comp to be sure that no viruses were left behind. Now after formatting, i still have 2 problems:

1. Whenever i click on any drive in my computer, it opens in a new window.

2. When i goto my computer-tools-folder options-view and when i uncheck Do not show hidden files and folders and after clicking on OK, it again cheks that option. I tried many times and as soon as i click ok, it again checks the option, and hidden files are not shown.

Please help me, i really need to get rid of this and want my comp to behave normally.

Waiting for replies.....

Thanking you.

Preferred Solution: Problem with Drives and Folder Option

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a strange problem on win xp SP3. A:folder option problem

First (to rule things out), make sure you have "display the contents of system folders" and "show hidden files and folders" checked, and "hide protected operating system files" UNchecked.

Someone had a malware that made hidden and superhidden file settings unavailable a
few months back. I ended up digging out the registry keys and writing a registry script for him.
If you're still experiencing the problem, try the registry script in the other thread.

Folders typically don't show sizes. Only the files do. It sounds like what you are seeing is normal. I'm not aware of any way to show a folder size in the SIZE column unless you use third-party software. Try this: http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/

I have a problem in retrieving files and folders that I hid. Folders and files are still hidden even after I clicked the radio button in front of show hidden files and folders in the view menu under folder option window. I suspect that this is due to the same virus which has infected already also causing drives to disolay "open with" window when double clicked it. I was opening my drives through Windows explorer instead. But I still need the double click option. Is there a way to remove this virus and to get my PC back to the original healthy state. Unfortunately I have not created a restore point recently. It would be a great help if somebody can supply a solution for this.

A:Problem in Hidden Folder option

If you have a virus, scan with your AV and remove it. Use another online scan, just to be sure, like TrendMicro. And since most bad guys are not viruses, you also need to scan with at least 2 anti-malware programs.

Free anti-malware scanners:
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 2007
Spyware Eliminator
Emco Malware Destroyer
Spyware Doctor
Arovax Anti-spyware
Trend-Micro Rootkit Buster
F-Secure Blacklight
Bootzilla (Bootable anti-malware CD with many other tools.)

If I just select "Stay Offline", it opens the folder and displays the files fine.

What could be causing this pop up message?

This usually means that a file extension is missing, such as jpeg, txt, exe, ect. My Computer isn't a file as you usually think of one, it is a process that comes with the parent process explorer.exe. For that reason I have to wonder if you are infected.

My laptop has a built in SD card reader.  I just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition and have installed all available Window updates.
When I go to:
Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View "tab"
and uncheck the box for "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder", the SD card reader still does not appear when I go into the Computer folder.
I have also tried going into the registry:
to change:
from 1 to 0, but that does not work either.
Can someone please help me get my SD card reader to appear in the Computer folder even when there is no card inserted into it?

A:Not working: Folder Options -> View -> Hide empty drives in the Computer folder

The card readers on my desktop computer (one connected internally via a USB header on the motherboard), one on my monitor and one on my printer all work the way they should.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is checked, none
of them are visible in the Computer folder.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is unchecked, they all become visible.
The card reader in my laptop is connected internally via micro-USB, but it's different.  It does not actually appear in the Device Manager until a card is inserted into it.
That's probably why the "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" does not work with my laptop's card reader.

I have three desktops networked (two in office and one my Son's) plus two laptops - all running XP Home. On the desktops I have 'sharing' enabled for each of the drives (4 No. on each) which gives me full access between them - no problems. Similarly, no access problems with my Son's laptop.
My laptop can also fully access the others, but it does not give me the "sharing and security" menu option for the drives themselves - only for the directories within them. So to access my laptop, I have to enable sharing for each of the individual root directories, which gives me a horendous number of 'Network Places'!!
There are no access restrictions set up and the fact that I can access the individual 'shared' directories on my laptop indicates that there is no configuration problem. I installed XP on two desktops - the installation on the third and on the two laptops is as the manufacturers - all have Service pack 1 update.
Does anyone have any idea as to how I can enable the sharing option for the drives themselves ??

I am just enquirying as to what the option is on some generic External USB Flash Drives and Hard Drives for storage that it has an option in the properties section that there is a ReadyBoost option.

When I initially trialled the option it created a folder on the drive. I do not know what it does with the storage space or if it alters anything else.

Does anyone know the purpose of the Readyboost option.

A:What is the ReadyBoost option that comes with some USB hard Drives

Readyboost is a Windows function, that allows a USB pen drive to augment the system memory for speeding up the system start.

The reason it does not appear on all devices is that there is a set of criteria, that has to be met before windows will consider using a particular device for readyboost, it has to be formated in a certain way and also of sufficient speed to make the option worthwhile

Hello, I have recently purchased a new 3TB drive for the purposes of backing up my data.

I have two drives that need backing up: a 2TB, and a 1TB. However I am not looking to backup the entirety of those drives. I am looking to transfer roughly 80% of the data on each to the new backup drive. As such cloning the drives onto partitions on the 3TB isn't a suitable option.

As well, I need the files to be accessible so they cannot be placed into an image or archive.

What is the best method to use if transferring several hundred large video files? As a copy-paste through Windows just seems like a bad idea.

A:What is the best option for transferring TBs of data between drives?

I have always found Teracopy to be fairly good with large amounts of data. Here is a link and you can check into it and see if you want to give it a try: TeraCopy for Microsoft Windows - Code Sector

I'm running WXPSP3.
Under the Windows Explorer Search files option, I would like to add a subset of drives as an option to search for files.

I have Googled this but the results are ambiguous.
This has nothing to do with Windows Search indexing options.

Now that's it's common to have Terabytes of storage, I have many partitions on my drives. It simplifies defragmentation.

Many times when I'm searching for a file, I know it's not on drive C. But that's the first place Windows Search starts. Instead of searching all drives/partitions , I need an option to search a subset of all drives/partitions. Starting with drive D usually.
Where is the code that specifies these parameters? Registry? If so, what section.
I searched the Registry for "C:;D:;E:;" and found nothing. So it could be hard coded.

Thanks in advance.

I can't answer your question directly but if the disks are using NTFS try this search utility, it's much faster than the XP one :- http://www.voidtools.com/

My husband recently added a new hard drive to my HP desktop, and then went to Iraq so I have no idea how to fix this problem and he can't because he is over there. I really need the systems restore done on the C drive but everytime I try it, it says nothing has been changed, or no restore could be done at this point. Can someone please help me get this fixed, my computer is really slow, and just acting choppy all around, I don't have many things downloaded on it, just the basic OS and a few programs like the world clock and the office XP. I am having a peculiar problem on my Windows 7 64-bit, which I noticed this week. Within the "Videos" folder, if I create a folder called "temp", I am not able to create any sub-folder within it through the right click menu. Picture attached. Now the funny thing is, if I create a sub-folder within it (thru linux since my laptop is dual boot), I can see everything in linux (files and folders). If I go back to Windows, the sub-folder is not visible. Only files are visible.

If I change the name of the main folder from "temp" to anything else, the sub-folders are then visible and so it the menu option.

This is not happening anywhere else on the disk, only within "Videos/temp". I have other folders within "Videos" and they behave fine.

Any thoughts?

A:No "Create new folder" option for a specific folder within Videos

Interesting, I don't even get New in the first context menu drop down for any folder created under Videos. This is on Windows 10, so there is something going on there (7, 8 and 10) that Microsoft thinks is important or useful.

I have accidentally set the folder of my program file to music folder, when I wanted to change it back there wasn't a "Customize this Folder" option available. No I am very annoyed by this. Please teach me how to change it back to default.

A:"Customize folder" option missing from folder view

Yea, I've had this problem too when making folders. For seemingly no reason at all they just lose their customize tab.

If you really want it back, just make another folder named "Program Files" in another directory, then move all the files into it (Make sure you get hidden ones too) and then delete the old program files folder and move the new one into the old directory on the C drive or wherever you had it before.

Make sure the old folder is empty though and that you don't miss anything!

A user has two 500GB hard drives, one installing in their computer, one is a USB hard drive.

If they cloned their currently installed hard drive onto the empty USB one, could they then do absolutely anything software based to their system (even as far as formatting the hard drive and installing another operating system) without fear of complications due to being able to reload the old image again later and get back to the very same state as the computer was when it copied?

A:Are cloned hard drives the ultimate recovery option?

Yes, as long as the user knows that the image will not reflect the current state of the hard drive. ie any thing added software / data after the cloning.

This is a strange bug in Windows XP Pro but it can and does happen to everyone. When you open the My Computer screen and your Documents folder is missing but all the other users folders are there try this tweak.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / Current Version / Explorer / DocFolderPaths

Once you click the DocFolderPaths folder you should see all the user's folders.

Add a new string value

Value Name: your user name

Value Data: the path to your docs folder ( ex. C:\Documents and Settings\your docs folder )

Exit Registry editor and open my computer, your docs folder should now be visable.

I hope this helps those of you stranded with this problem!Click to expand...

It has been moved:
Click the "Start Orb"Click "Default Programs"Click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" (it can take a few minutes to load this list)But generally, if you double-click an unknown file type, you will get the "Windows cannot open this file" dialog. Select the option "Select a program from a list of installed programs" and click "OK":

You will then be presented with the "Open With" window. Click "Browse", and locate the program that you could like to use to open the file:

You can also specify a description of the file type, or to always use the specified program to open the file.

Will try to explain. I have a folder on my desktop called Forums with several forums listed. When I clicked on a forum, the forum page used to display on TOP of my Forum Folder but now the forum page comes up underneath my folder and I have to click off my folder to see the page. Really annoying. I've checked my folder settings but don't know what I have to change. Hope you can help.

A:Folder Option

I don't know of any user setting that controls that.
If these are Internet Explorer shortcuts in the folder -- this is worth a shot though.

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

Run regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

In the right pane right click on Window_Placement and delete it.

Then open IE shortcuts and see if the behavior has changed.

You can also reconfigure the folder size itself to a smaller window and then close it. It should then reopen as the smaller window and the page focus should then bring to the top whatever you click the mouse on.

Make the changes that you want in Windows Explorer, and then go to "Organize" and the Folder and Search Options, then the View tab and then select "Apply to ALL folders".

When you start Windows Explorer again you should now have the selected changes.

when ever i turn off my pc. and then turn it on. all my folder option go back to the way they were before. plus my when i click on a folder it always opens in minimize and not max. i have tried all kinds of things. and nothing helps. does any one know how to fix this? I'm running vista premium

A:folder option?

Have you set up a folder the way you want it and then gone into the Folder Options and under the view tab clicked on apply to all folders for the folder type? If you have, there's a problem, if not, that's how.

Not sure on the min/max problem. It used to be that you could open a system folder and size it to what you wanted and then close it and maybe repeat once and the new open size would be in effect but I haven't dealt with Valveesta in that regard yet.

The option - hide extension for known file type change itself to unticked after I ticked the box and click ok. How to fix this?

A:Folder Option Keep Changing Itself.

Hello TheChronix,

There's also a checkbox option to hide or show know file extensions in the ribbon in File Explorer that's easy to click and check by mistake.

If that still doesn't help, then you might see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below may. It's the same in Windows 8 as well.

A:"folder option" - in the menu bar

Welcome to the forums.

I wouldn't try COMBOFIX just yet. Let's try to find out a little more about your problem first.

Which version of XP and Service Pack are you running? Is there a possibility of low available RAM (memory) or disk space?
Have you had any problems with virus or other malware? It could be a sign of lingering malware. There are folks here that can help, we just need to know more.

Please post back when you can.

Hi, ive had this problem for awhile, and i dont know why it happened. so basically, when i try to save a file from problems and reach the part where you ask you where to save. im not allowed to click anything, does anyone else have this problem or had this problem and know how to fix it?

A:no folder selection option?

Welcome back!

Click on "Start" type in "CMD" (Without quotes). Locate CMD.exe right click on CMD.exe then select "Run As Administrator" Now in the command prompt window type in then hit enter.

This will attempt to check integrity of Windows system file, and replace any missing or corrupted system files. This will take some time. Reboot when done.
If the scans says it could not fix some corrupted files.

Go to Start/Computer/C:\Windows\logs\CBS.log copy and paste it to your desktop

On this thread and on your next post click on the "Go Advanced" button click on "Manage Attachments" Upload the CBS.log here.

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anybody knows how we can set a specific "sort" format for each folder.

for example: "sort" the files in one folder by "type" and another folder by "Name"

any idea?

A:use different sort option in each folder

Look here for info on your sorting.

Also look under open right next to it...

Hello There, Im new here and would first off like to say Hello and that you guys are great for helping out the way you do.

On to the issue..

I recently cleaned out a virus from my computer "Vundo.h" and some adware that i got from using IE which i will never do again by the way.. Im sticking to Firefox. Anyway After i cleaned this virus whenever i go to a folder and click Organize, the folder and search option is no longer highlighted. I am the administrator on this machine so i dont know why it would not be highlighted anymore other than (In theory) the virus edited my registry or policies, so that i could not see any hidden files on my system. Anyway is there a way to restore that. I tried system restore to no avale. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I thank you in advance
