BSOD playing Left 4 Dead 2

Q: BSOD playing Left 4 Dead 2

I have been having issues with crashes to desktop and blue screens while playing L4D2 through Steam. While the issue is mostly isolated to instances where the game is running, I have also had the BSOD show up during normal web browsing or other basic uses.

I recently reformatted my SSD (OS drive), hoping to clear out any funky registry files or bad drivers. After a clean reinstall and update of Windows and all drivers, the issue reappeared twice last night. I've stress tested my video card, CPU, and memory with no problems. Help please!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This computer has had BSOD problems for a long time. I'm not sure if they are all related. I removed a problematic stick of memory about a year ago and that seemed to do the trick. Over the last month I've had a couple BSODs or complete lockups where I lose all responsiveness and the video freezes.

Lately the BSODs have been occurring while playing Left 4 Dead on steam. Right before the BSOD or lock up the video will scramble.

Thanks,

Nick

Hello Calbini.

Uninstall McAfee Using McAfee Removal Tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Roll back the fraphics driver to an older one.
Download and install Driver Fusion.
Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, Drivers > Beta and Legacy; search there with your cards particulars for GeForce 306.23 Driver, dated 13.9.2012 and install it.

Whenever the game crashes, the sound always loops. Though I can always kill the game via Task Manager, it rarely crashes to desktop on its own.

I've poured over the Steam forums and other related sites in search of solutions for 'random' crashes with Left 4 Dead 2, but none worked for me. Most of the crash fixes are about at least 1 year old. I noticed this problem started happening after I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Express, which leads me to believe there is something wrong with Windows perhaps. I've deleted and reinstalled the game, updated my graphics card driver to the latest one, and verified the audio driver and bios are the most recent.

In my search for a fix, I came across a tool called Process Monitor. Looking over the Process Monitor log after the game crashes, before the Left 4 Dead 2 Thread Exit operation occurs I see that there are many RegOpenKey events resulting in NAME NOT FOUND. Some of the keys are related to audio.

I own the legit/non-pirated version of Left 4 Dead 2.
I have 3 hard drives. Windows and Steam (the launcher for L4D2) are installed on the C:drive, 120GB SSD. Using an application called Steam Tool, a third-party software not created by Valve, I moved the game to my portable F: drive (a 1TB 5400rpm HDD connected via USB) to free up space on my SSD (which now has almost 27 GB of free space).
My laptop is a Sager NP9280, purchased almost 3 years ago.

To check your files for corrupted or incorrect versions you can run sfc /scannow.The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. Go to Start, click on All Programs, click on Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, click on Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. A page similar to the one below will open.Type sfc /scannow and then press ENTER: This scan consists of five parts and will take a while to run. You will need to be patient and allow it to complete. Stopping it while it is still running can damage your operating system.

I, too, have been experiencing this problem only recently. I'm afraid I'm nowhere near the tech-savvy human you appear to be but I do know the following: I'm running Windows Vista 64 (Service Pack 2), Dual-core 2.5 GHz processor with 6GB RAM. It only happens on L4D2 and only in the past couple weeks. Something that happens that isn't mentioned above is that my computer monitor goes to sleep as if the CPU is shut down - but it's still on, looping the last bit of sound, until I hold the power button down and manually reboot. I did notice that the two times it happened last time were 11:00pm and 1:00am on the dot but then it happened later, around 1:45am.

I'll try that sfc /scannow bit and get back to ya'll. Thanks a ton!

EDIT: Just tried and noticed this message a the top of the prompt window, which doesn't ring a bell: "c:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Msyitwgeawcb.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command" if that helps any.

Hi, so since last Saturday (6th September) I've been getting several BSODs almost every time I've tried playing games with my friends. On average I can play for about 20-30 minutes, I might get lucky once or twice and last for an hour, and a couple of times my pc has auto-rebooted itself after just being in the game for 5 minutes. The only one exception was one time I was merely browsing the internet and the machine just had a random BSOD (the machine is a custom build that I purchased from computerplanet.co.uk about 3 months ago). It's happening so often now that I can't really play with my friends until this problem has been resolved. This was the information of the last BSOD that happened:

Hello, blackandblue I'll see if I can help a little. First there were no files attached. Please run
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions. Maybe easier, use option #2 and click the 'Grab All' button, then give it a few minutes to collect the information. Upload the Zip file with your next post. Please put them in a new post, so I get notified. This will tell you how to upload files and screenshots. Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums. I would also suggest you monitor system temps of both CPU and GPU. For COU I use either Core Temp or Real Temp. For your GPU, if your card does not come with a GPU program, you can use MSI Afterburner. Afterburner is an Overclocking utility, but it has some very good monitoring features and will even put the temps and fan speeds on screen so you can see them while playing. It will also allow you to set a custom fan profile so you can better keep your card cool, if that is a problem.

If you would, please add to your system specs, the make and model of your PSU as well as what CPU cooler you are using. Also in a new post, please run the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions and use the option #2 and click the 'Grab All' button and give it time to complete the collection of data, which can take a couple of minutes. Then, in a new post upload the zip file results. this will tell you how to upload them Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Hello,

Whenever I play Left 4 Dead 2, I always get the same error come up at some point during the game. Usually it's when the game map changes, or when a character dies, any major change to the game and it just kicks me off. (It's really annoying )

I've reformatted windows about 3 times and reinstalled a fresh copy of the game.

I've installed all of the graphics drivers correctly from the original disc.

I've uninstalled & reinstalled Runtime library and tried a few different versions.

All my PC's specs are more than adequate to run this game.

Why is this happening?

Please help!
Thanks!

Hi!

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 x32 from Windows XP x32
I've had the same BSOD three times now, fairly regularly, but also random

All three times it happened while playing Left 4 Dead 2.
The thing is I can't recreate it, it started about 2 months ago, but I ignored it and just let it do it's thing, but a week and a half ago it really got to me so I formatted my CPU, I assumed this would stop it... needless to say it hasn't. I don't know what it is

If it means anything... I did originally install 64Bit windows 7 on the first day it came out but my computer didn't handle it too well so I dropped down to 32Bit.

I will try literally anything because this really is beginning to bug me.

My computer spec:
Motherboard: Winfast
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
GFX: Radeon X1600 Seroes
RAM: 2x 1024 MB

Any help to stop me from getting further BSODs would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if there's any more information I need to provide to help with the troubleshooting.

Thanks in advance.

Can't really tell what's going on here, the Windows Debugging Tools aren't able to access symbols for your operating system files (in particular NTOSKRNL.EXE/NTKRNLMP.EXE/NTKRNLPA.EXE) from the Microsoft Symbol Server - so that makes debugging them difficult if not impossible.

Please do the following:
- activate/validate the Windows installation at Genuine Microsoft Software
- run sfc.exe /scannow to replace any problem files
- If that doesn't fix it, then wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows
- don't use "leaked"/torrent builds

This is a PC that was custom-built by a friend last September. Since early May I've been getting BSODs more and more frequently while playing games like Diablo III and Left 4 Dead 2. Since it's been happening during games, I suspect it could be my GPU, but I haven't had to troubleshoot much before so I'm not sure.

I have tried to update my graphics driver (AMD CCC 12.4 from 12.3), but when I did so my PC refused to recognize the new drivers at all (tried Driver Sweeper and restarting, no luck). I ended up restoring back to a system restore point before I tried to update in order to get the PC usable again, as I need it for work as well.

I have WhoCrashed installed and have been checking the crash dumps, but they vary each time and googling hasn't helped me much.
Here are some specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 970
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
GPU: XFX HD-687A-ZHFC Radeon HD 6870
HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W

Thanks in advance for your help. Hopefully I've not left anything important out.

Hi All!

I've been getting random BSOD's when playing Dead Island, wich is driving me Insane!

Im using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Full Retail on a self build PC.

The system itself is about 10 months old.

Age of the OS installation is also 10 months, but I tested it on a seperate, fresh Win7 partition, wich gave the same results.

First time playing, I kept getting the "ATI display driver error has stopped working" error, everytime around 10 minutes play-time, wich would cause the game to freeze for about 10 seconds..

I then updated my Display Drivers & Catalyst Control Center to the latest versions. After that I can play up to an hour and a half, before a random blue screen of death kicks in. Last time I played, it happened in 10 minutes!..

10 months ago, after building this PC, I had some "ATI display driver error has stopped working" errors watching Youtube & other online movies. This hasn't happened since the update (tested with 30 screens loaded and playing at the same time)..

3Dmark11 also works good, no hang ups or weird reports..

Why oh Why do I keep getting these Annoying errors? Could you guys help me figure it out?

Thanks in advance!!

For the record a few days before this I messed up with my Intel VGA drivers to fix my brightness issue (reinstalling between new and old version back and forth) so I wonder if that's the cause.

Below is my log dump, thank you

I've been blue screening for a while now and can't seem to figure out the problem. It happens randomly but it mostly seems to be whenever the game is loading a new section for example:

Rust: when teleporting
Killing Floor: when a new wave starts

I've tried memtest and disk check but I don't have much experience with BSOD so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x64
- Upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista Home Premium
- OEM

- 2008 - the year the computer was built
- Can't remember exactly when I installed the OS

I basically get a BSOD about an hour or so into the game, or sometimes at random. I've never had this kind of problem before with games

I've ran system checks on ESET Online Scanner, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and a few tracking cookies were removed but the problems still persist

SFC /SCANNOW showed up an error which it couldn't repair so I've attached the CBS log aswell

I've also uninstalled Daemon Tools Lite as I've read it can cause problems, but it hasn't made any difference

Also i've already ran Memtest on both my 2GB sticks of RAM and they've come up clean, testing each stick for 4 passes with and without the other stick in each slot

Also ran a CPU stress test from Intel and it came out fine

Has anyone else experienced such behavior? Or any Idea how to check whether the port has to be replaced? Thanks!

Hello, I am posting this for a friend to try to fix his game. I bought him L4D2 the other day and he says:

"It seems like the signal from my mouse is taking a long time to get to the game. Same with my keyboard. It's very choppy in certain areas and sometimes the graphics look like an N64 game. Whenever I jump it's like I get frozen in the air just a little, and everything else is moving but I'm still in the air... it's almost like I'm lagging but I don't think I'm lagging."

He showed me this screenshot of how the fire looks in his game: img52.imageshack.us/img52/1642/firel(.jpg)-- compare this to mine: img229.imageshack.us/img229/3410/blarr2(.jpg)

We've messed with the settings endlessly -- tried almost every combination possible with things turned on and off and it doesn't seem to make a difference. His computer runs MW2 fine so there's no reason it can't run L4D2 just the same.

I don't know much about computers myself, so I asked him to take a screenshot of his DXDIAG thing with System and Display so you should have all of the information: img502.imageshack.us/img502/1981/systemspecsm(.png)

Thanks for the help.

P.S. I am probably breaking the rules by posting links before I have 5 posts but sorry D: I don't know what else to do

It looks like his PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements of the game, especially the intel integrated graphics.

hello i used to play left for dead with all the settings on high, and stuff like multicore rendering used to be on, and now a few months later i go to play the game and it is lags and at times when loads of zombies come it starts pulling into a certain direction by its self, and also at certain times the sound goes.
so now i changed my settings into medium, and turned multicore rendering off. still i am getting some lag and the sound blanks out at times, and when loads of zombies dome and i have to keep clicking i can see my desktop wallpaper flashing.
when i brought the game it worked very smooth, and on top settings. i am using a laptop.
any questions please ask and i will reply using extra details section.
just for further info, i also brought another game, microsoft flight simulator x deluxe edition, could this be the reason for the lag, i did put another post up on if you have more than one game installed would that make a game lag and people replied no, check it out.
thank you for your time and please help

I have muddled about with game video settings and have downloaded up to date drivers but to no avail.

Sounds like your card cant render fast enough and freaks out.
So many unique characters moving in any direction they so chose. Allot to keep up with.
Long shot, but if you would like to try other drivers....
I have had very good gaming using Omega Drivers. http://www.omegadrivers.net/omega_drivers.php

Now, if it's a video card or processor over load, I don't think they will help. But, worth a shot maybe.

Hello. I am Beatz. Now, if you've read the title, these two games seem to freeze the exact same way on my pc. Now, what happens, you ask? Well, first, I double click on either one of these games:

Borderlands 2:
I click "Play" on the Mini menu. Then, it loads for a second and stops. So I wait there, for 5 minutes. After it looks like it loaded up, I got through all the splash animations. So, once I'm done, I pressed a key. Now, after it detects my DLC (Got the GOTY edition on Steam), it freezes on "Downloading Updates".

Left 4 Dead 2:
I double click on it, loads for a second, then stops. After five minutes, it loads up and freezes on the first "loading" screen after the cinematic.

Now, I've tried reinstalling the games, I've tried chkdsk /f, I've upgraded my video/audio drivers, reinstalled the direct X updates, have all the right programs needed to run them, have more than min. specs, ran it in compatibility mode and even tried to restore a point. But, that point I wanted to load to doesn't exist anymore.

Please help, Beatz
(P.S.: I've got my DxDaig and Msinfo in the attachments)
(P.P.S: Ms info won't work )

A:Borderlands 2 And Left 4 Dead 2 Freeze The Same Way

I don't if AMD has a 'clean install' procedure for video drivers, but I'm a HUGE proponent of completely uninstalling your video drivers, including all files. Then let Windows install the default drivers and then install the fresh copy of your cards current drivers.

NVidia even has a built-in 'clean install' checkbox during their driver installation program. It has help a LOT of people to refresh their drivers this way.

I have both of these running flawlessly on Steam. But I have an NVidia GTX 580.

A:will this computer run left for dead 2 and modern warfare2?

The Phenom x4 is going to be the major tripping point. Get something like an Athlon II x2 240-250, going to be running it better... Phenom II x2 5*0 or x3 7*0 would be even better.
But yes, if that's what you're getting cheap, then I guess it's okay for normal settings at a decent resolution...
Make sure the power supply is good enough for the card (you're apparently planning to add it)

I played it and it ran flawlessly. Only after switching off my computer and starting it back up again did the problems arise. first of all it seemed to have turned my ati software OFF so i had to turn it back on again, this was all ok. ive recently played it again, turned it off and started it back up again this morning. now the computer just goes onto the startup screen and no further. im pretty sure left 4 dead has caused this problem. does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? thanks

So I'm doin' my thang online last night mindin' my own bidness using Firefox 3.6 then saw a golf game link and not thinking clicked it then tried to close it and go directly to it. TOO LATE! Well whatever it was, up pop the stupid anti-malware ads so I know Malwarebytes did not catch it. Not only that Malwarebytes doesn't work and won't reinstall. Dead in the water. Antivir runs but doesn't find anything. Amazing. It always seems to find everything else and half the time it's false positives. Im hoping someone might know how to fix this, been trying to find out all day and got no luck.
I join a game and it starts up, about at the middle of the loading bar it kinda freezes a little and stays there for a sec then springs to the end and I get this error message.

Disconnect: Server uses different class tables

Ive read up and found people that just say its because the server is out of date or you are. Well I got it on steam and no one exactly owns the server you play on, its just ran dedicated. This happens to every server I try to connect to. I dont even know were to start. If your gonna reply here dont just say its because the server is out of date or something lol, need a explanation on how to fix it. I've tried reinstalling the game multiple times, ive cleared the folder and reinstalled too.

I am having the exact same problem. Happens with TF2 as well. What is your audio source ? I am using the Envy24 Family Audio Controller from VIA (on board my motherboard, Gigabyte G31M-S2L). According to the Gigabyte website, it uses the Realtek ALC662 codec.

Do you also use voice communication in game ? Or outside like with ventrilo ? I am wondering if that has anything to do with it.
