Corrupted display outputs or video memory?

Q: Corrupted display outputs or video memory?

Hello, I've an old AMD RadeonHD4890 (ASUS EAH4890) which recently has run into issues. This summer it was used for long gaming sessions (about 5 hours per day), with about 40c ambient temperature and the card running at 75c and being cleaned every 2 or 3 weeks with blower. But during a lightweight web surfing it just stopped working.

It does have 2x DVI outputs, one doesn't output anything anymore and the other one outputs corrupted image. What I've tried so far:
- Using HDMI output (bundled DVI->HDMI adapter)
- Swapping RAM slots
- Checking and reconnecting PCI-Express power cables

I was planning to replace the card with an AMD R9 380 but at the moment it's being sold as 1.5-2x the price tag in local shops (I live in Iran) due to low quantity and US sanctions, I can't afford it yet. So I was wondering is it possible to repair the card and what kind of issue are we dealing with here?

Preferred Solution: Corrupted display outputs or video memory?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Got a popup that I had a system update and I installed it. Lost my aero task bar color. When scrolling web pages (firefox) get a peculiar window blind/rolling blinds effect. uninstalled video driver and reinstalled most current one. no effect. tried rolling back update with system restore. won't roll back. tried services stop themes service and restart. no effect.

Any help greatly appreciated.

A:5/15 system update corrupted video display

For me, the latest patch Tuesday (5/13) updates changed the Multiple Displays setting from Duplicate to Extended on all my systems.
In Windows Screen Resolution I would set it back to Duplicate.
Then if I switched the display to another PC, and then back, the setting was set to Extended again.
The Duplicate setting would not stick...

I use AMD GPUs and finally ran CCC to see if something looked wrong...
I toggled some settings on and off in CCC.

The Duplicate setting now sticks for me - switching devices, sleeping/waking, rebooting, ...

While it's not the same issue you have, it seems something affected video with this latest round of updates (imho).
I thought it was "just me" and caused by my crazy setup with multiple PCs, monitors, mice, keyboards, audio devices, KVM, ...

I don't know what video manufacturer you have, but if you have a utility such as AMD CCC, nVidea Control Panel, etc., you might play with settings there.

While System Restore doesn't work for you, you could try uninstalling update(s) and see if that helps.

I'll also add, I create System Backup Images before each Patch Tuesday.
A System Restore (Restore Point) is NOT a complete copy of the "OS" drive.
A System Backup Image is a complete copy of the "OS" drive.
System Backup Images are more reliable...
This won't help you now, but something you might consider going forward.

A client for our business requires dual outputs from a PC we built for them. The motherboard for the PC is the H81M-PLUS which has VGA and DVI-D on board.

We tested 5 different DVI-D to VGA adapters and on every one we weren't able to get any display on the monitor. When we attempted dual displays with one using the onboard VGA to a monitor with VGA and the other using the DVI-D to VGA adapter which lead to another VGA monitor of the same model it was able display the VGA to VGA but not the adapted display. Using the VGA to VGA monitor we went into the display settings and saw that windows could see the second monitor but just couldn't display it.

The machines we tested on also have the same motherboard.

In summary using the adapters we can't get any displays.

Is there any way to fix this without installing a graphics card?

Thanks in advance.

Those do not work cause they are passive adapters you need an active adapter as the vga is all analog and the DVI-D is all digital. You need something like this for the second screen Amazon.com: StarTech.com DVI2VGAE 1920x1200 DVI-D to VGA Active Adapter Converter Cable: Electronics

I bought a second hand gaming PC (i7 4770 RX480 win10) recently, the only way I can get any display to show on my monitor is through the HDMI port, it has three other display ports on the GPU, and HDMI/VGA/dvi on the motherboard.

I've checked using multiple monitors and two brand new cables and the only port that seems to send any signal is the HDMI in the graphics card.

Is this a drivers or config issue?

I have a simple question. Would Windows 7 allow me to have 3 video outputs?

At the moment I have a 22" Dell monitor and a 42" Westinghouse monitor connected to my on-board video outputs and works great. The 22" I have connected through VGA (haven' got around to getting a DVI cable yet), and my 42" monitor I have connected through the HDMI output.

Gigabyte motherboard has (1)VGA, (1)DVI and (1)HDMI output.

I have been thinking of purchasing a video card lately, since I've noticed that when I play some HD movies on my 42", it tends to sometimes lag a bit on scenes with a lot of action. I have 4GB's of RAM and my CPU never goes above 17% while watching the movie, so I can only assume this has to do with the on-board video card struggling a bit to display the data fast enough.

I already have another matching 22" Dell monitor and would like to run a dual display with the 22's and still have the 42" available. So if I get a video card, would I be able to run my 42" monitor off of that and then the dual 22"s off the on-board video?

A:3 Video Outputs?

Simple question results in simple answer: no.

It can't be done because one of the outputs shares it's resources with another. So going by that, only 2 can work simultaneously.

The new 5xxx line can do all three I believe. I can't tell you per exact model, but possibly they all can.

The HD 3200 should not lag. It is designed precisely for HD video. Perhaps your system can be tweaked in other ways to get best overall performance. Ensure you're using the latest video driver with latest chipset mobo drivers.

The answer to this: "So if I get a video card, would I be able to run my 42" monitor off of that and then the dual 22"s off the on-board video?"

is simply, yes. Get another ATI HD card for easiest/best results. You could attach one 22" and 42" to new card and leave one 22" on the HD 3200. Or if 5xxx, put all three on card and disable onboard HD 3200. Or do exactly as you asked.

Any current model with a DP can do it. Does anyone know how to fix this:

My video outputs are reversed. The output (connected to a 30" Dell 3008WFP display) that shows all the BIOS etc screens normally is seen as output #2 whereas my HDTV is seen as output #1.

Now, the only real issue this causes it that the Win+P menu has the displays the wrong way around: The HDTV is seen as "computer" and the LCD display as "projector". Other way around would make more sense.

Does anyone know where I can swap this?

I'm running Win7 RTM (happened with RC too) and the latest Nvidia WHQL drivers for my Gainward GTX260.

Hi everyone, this is my first time here. Been browsing the internet to find an answer to my problem but I can't find any, I hope you guys can help me out. I want to connect my laptop to my tv for watching youtube and such on big screen, I got VGA and DVI for video output. I went to the store to buy a DVI to HDMI adapter because my digibox is still connected with SCART, but all the rest on HDMI. Now I can't get any sound tho because it's only video on the DVI part. I went to the store today to buy a cable with 3.5 jack to plug in my laptop and L/R in my tv. Problem now...the picture is on a HDMI channel, but no sound, I got a TV and PC channel, but only the sound, no picture. I don't know how I can fix this problem without buying a new cable, already spent like 25€ on the adapter and cable, I was hoping you guys could help me find another solution then going out and buy a new cable again.

Thanks for helping

A:Seperate Video and Audio outputs =(

It will depend on your TV (and receiver if you are using one). Some TV's allow the selection of the video and audio inputs. However, most don't allow the selection of audio inputs if you are using HDMI as they expect the audio to be on the HDMI input. If you have a surround sound receiver, simply input the audio to the receiver. Aside from that, I don't know of any other solutions. You can merge DVI and your audio output, as the audio is analog (DVI and HDMI are digital).

I am looking into upgrading one of our conference rooms at work with something that can provide output to at least 2 HDTV and 1 projector, with the future of a 3rd hdtv.

I been out the loop for awhile with video cards, and wanted to know if anybody knows of a way this can be done with a possible video card that has 4 hdmi outputs? They will be (2) 55 inch hdtvs and a projector which should output its own resolution

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

A:Any video cards with 4 HDMI outputs?

No video cards I know of have 4 HDMI outputs, but you can find plenty of cards that have that many if you combine DVI + Displayport. You could always use DP converters to HDMI got get the appropriate number of connections, but remember that after 2 non DP devices you'll need to start using Active Converters if you plan to keep the signal digital.

Hi, I need to connect 3rd monitor to my Z800 workstation and I need to add second GPU for that. I wanted to ask what are limitations for such configuration because there is no data about that at all. Currently I have quadro FX3800 and I want to connect two ZR2440W and one LP2475W to the computer. I had occasion to try to put other graphic card to computer because I had it for a moment, newer GF GTX750Ti but this config didnt worked - there were no output signal for second card it doesnt matter which one was connected at the time in second slot. Drivers messed totally, nvidia control panel were crashing down everytime I tried to turn it on. I assume this card is too new or very different from that quadro and it is impossible to make it work. My question is will it work with two FX3800 or with other Quadro? How to configure workstation for setup like this? Regards, JK

Dell Latitude D820, 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz

Nice laptop, but I can't run anything graphic-intensive. I work at a company where everyone has this same computer, however, I am one of the only ones who uses Photoshop. Everything works fine as long as I stay within limits (no widgets, turn off shadows, etc...) until I open up Photoshop. Photoshop puts it past the edge.

I finally found out that it's a problem with only having 8mb video memory. In the BIOS, there's no way to set it to more. This is ridiculous and absurd.

Everything's fine if I stick with 1280x768. However, this laptop was designed for 1920x1200, so it seems like this computer would work like it was designed for. Hmm..

Any ideas on how to improve my video performance? Buying things is an option, if there's some sort of external graphics card...or dock...etc.

somehow my vista home premium box system properties dialogue box reported a gig of ram.. now it reports 767 MB of ram.

with 767, my pc has slowed down quite a bit since my video card hijacked my memory without my permission.

checked bios chipset, and video configurations.. there's nowhere to adjust shared video memory there. checked harware manager properties for all video devices.. not there either...

when this happened my windows vista rating dropped from a 4.0 to a 3.0 too.

Two days ago my laptop display became corrupted. To start with I'll list the problems:
On boot loader random $ and & signs appear with a red/green character background

On same screen some chars change to others.

In windows there are random discoloured pixels everywhere (although the is a sort of pattern to it. This happens when running apps, and the pixels will slowly bleed through on new pages/screens until at full intensity.

Games that worked fine the day before now have graphics problems rendering them unplayable.

It's not the screen, I connected an external monitor and it showed the same problem. I don't think it's the video card because of the problems at bios (before the video drivers are loaded.)

Please help - this is my only decent computer and I can't afford to replace it.

Screenshot attached. Notice the pink pixels on the white parts.

My specs are below:

Alienware area 51m (nearly 4 years old)
memory - 1GB RAM
proc. - pent 4 3.0ghz
BIOS - PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0
chipset - Intel 1A30 rev 17

The video card is an ATI Radeon HD5770 1024 mb GDDR5 PCI-E and both the monitor and computer are about a year old.

These problems just started happening out of the blue.

Since, I have updated the video card driver numerous times but to no avail.

It's not my problem, so I put it between quote marks.

FYI, here are some relevant answers I received:

The memory state's written to the hard disk as a file (Hiberfil.sys) when Hibernate's activated, so I'd check the hard disk out with the appropriate manufacturer's utility to see if there are any problems.

Have you tried disabling hibernation, restarting the PC and re-enabling hibernation.

I'm still having the same problem with this as in my other posts. I'm currently working with MS (they volunteered to help me! ). They've had me uninstall all unneeded hardware, run sigverif on my System32 subdirectory, do a repair install of XP, and now are having me rename 8 .sys files and rebooting to let Windows fix this. Also, Aryeh Goretsky has suggested that I use the Intel RAID driver rather than the one supplied by Asus (my mobo) and I'm going to try that next.

Eek. I need help!

I recently got back from a vacation where I took many pictures. There were too many for the memory card (Sandisk 256mb), so I routinely downloaded them to my laptop via the "removable disk" drive. When I got home, I wanted to move them all to my home computer (which is XP, just like my laptop), so I put the memory card (which still had a number of pictures on it) in the laptop and selected the entire folder of pictures on the laptop, cut it, and tried pasting it to the card. I knew the folder was too large, but I thought it would just fill up and I could move them all in a few trips.

I pressed "cancel" after a message came up telling me the card was full, and then I pulled the memory card out from the laptop. I thought everything was fine. I have the same removable drive on my home computer, so I inserted the memory card, but nothing happened (usually a message comes up asking me what I want to do with the disk). I opened My Computer and tried to open the drive (which happens to be F on my computer), but it just said "Please insert disk into drive F." The card can't be read by anything -- none of three computers, nor the digital camera I had been using.

I downloaded some programs that are supposed to recover lost or corrupted files (Photorescue was one of them), but I got errors. The programs can recognize the drive, but it says that there is more than 2000gb of files on the memory card, which there certainly is not...... Read more

I am running Windows 7 64-bit on an HP Pavilion dm4 1265dx.

Tonight I was going through and editing pictures I took on my Nikon DSLR. It was working fine until all of a sudden my card reader crashed and wouldn't read the 8GB Sandisk SDHC card anymore.

I tried restarting but my computer wouldn't start up again unless I took the memory card out of the slot, as in the "Starting Windows" screen played but the sign-in screen wouldn't come up until I took the card out. It has repeated this performance at least 3 times since then when I've tried rebooting for various reasons in trying to fix this, I always have to take the card out before it will start up. Normally if I'm not using my camera I just leave the memory card in the card reader and my computer will start up without an issue.

When I insert the card into the card reader, it plays a sound that means it recognizes a new device has been inserted but autoplay doesn't come up. If I take the card out it makes the device removed sound. Also, while the card is in, it has been causing performance issues with my computer as well; Chrome crashes often, Control Panel is extraordinarily slow, and my Symantec virus protection tells me that it is turned off even though I haven't turned it off.

When I insert the "bad" card into my camera, it says that the card may be damaged and to insert another one. I was just using it earlier tonight to take pictures!!! None of the prongs are bent and the lock s... Read more

Just as matter of interest have you had a very close look at the contacts on the card? I use those and usually 4GB ones and have never had this happen and just for the record mine never makes that sound inserting them or taking them out.

Hello all. This is basically an extension of this topic, if anyone would like to take a look: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-v...ointing-toward-memory-errors.html#post6771042

So, to kind of repeat what I've done thus far.

I have totally disabled my systems page file, which is obviously becoming quite a pain. The system runs BSOD free when running without a pagefile, but when I re-enable the page file, the BSOD's come again.

I am almost 100% sure the page file is at fault now, seeing as I can run without the BSOD's when run without the page file.

But, obviously now I need to re-enable the page file. But again I'm at a loss as to what to do to fix this, so if anyone could recommend something I would be grateful.

I've no idea what could be causing this.

P.S. The error code I'm getting after I re-enable the page file is the same ones I got before, 0x7F mostly.

Reading the last post, did you try Rollin' Rog's advice? It does sound like a drive issue. You can set your system to delete the page file on shutdown. It's done in the registry.

1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
3. Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.
4. Right click on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to 1 to enable.
6. Reboot your computer.

I have 2 gig of ram, my page is set to 100megs and I never have any trouble, the system is more responsive set this way.

I have a small, but annoying, problem with WordPad I hope you might be able to help me with.

I recently noticed the message WordPad displays when ending before saving an open, changed file, is corrupted.

I've attached a Word document with an example of both the corrupted message and how it should look.

The PC with the problem is running Windows XP Professional, with SP2 installed.

I've replaced the Wordpad.exe, wordpad.inf and wordpad.PNF files from another PC running XP, but the problem persists.

I've done web searches for this problem, and as best as I can determine, I haven't seen this problem reported.

Other word processing/text editing software on the affected PC (i.e. Word, Notepad, etc.) are working fine.

Aside from the corrupted display, WordPad operates normally.

Anti Virus software routinely running on the affected PC shows no infected files.

I've used XP's System File Checker (SFC) facility to hopefully scan all the Window's related files for corruption and it found no errors.

I've run out of things to try. I'm hoping you might have some suggestions for me!

Thanks very much!

My computer crashed yesterday with some sort of memory error, followed by the blue screen of death. At the same time, a file called VIP casino came up on the desktop. I don't know if this is corrupted memory alone, or if something else is responsible and hope to get some information.

I downloaded hijackthis on a separate computer and ran it from a cd on the bad computer because 1) the internet no longer works...it doesn't recognize the connection, though i can access the internet on other computers in the household. 2.) i was unable to copy the files from the cd onto the computer. i tried to create a folder on the desktop and copy the files into it, however, the folder sets itself as a read only and allows me to change it, only for it to change itself back immediately 3.) i was able to save a log file on the computer but can't copy or move the file. Several programs won't run correctly because they are missing files. A few other weird things are that the system tray or whatever it is called(the bottom right part of the screen by the clock), doesn't show all of the items that normally load and the view in windows is the classic view versus the xp blue and won't change either.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

A:not sure if it's corrupted memory or virus of some sort?

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.... Read more

It is running 10 pro 64.
The video card is Nvidia GTX 750 Ti. (brand new)
The monitor is a Samsung UE590, connected with Display Port. (brand new)
Connected with a high quality display-port cable. (brand new)
RAM is 16 Gigs.

Everything looks great until the system is left idle for over one hour. Then, the display is corrupted. Lines through the video, colors are wrong, sometimes the screen is split into 4 panes with the video duplicated in each pane. Only a reboot will get it working again.

Ram test is good after 8 hours of testing.
SFC found no errors.
Nvidia drivers are updated.
Windows is updated.
I tried loading the video card using "FurMark", it ran the tests and everything was normal.

I do have a power plan that turns off the display after 1 hour. It does not sleep or hibernate.
Nothing noteworthy was in the event log.

What else should I look at?

I asked my question on micorsoft community but they answered a few times then simply stopped answering, all I was told is that it maybe possibly due to corrupted memory drivers. I either get the BSOD with the DPC_Watchdog_Violation error or my laptop just freezes and a constant buzzing sound happens until I force it to shut down (but this is rarer). Something I have noticed is that it usually if not always happens when im on skype and something that I have seen sometimes is that skype is the first program to say not responding then seconds later the BSOD happens. This error has been happening from the first day I got windows 8.1 upgraded from windows 7. Any help would be appreciated!

Basically I bought a memory stick from Kingston because I work from home as a tutor and I wanted somewhere to save my work. When I put the memory stick in the laptop and turned it on it said unable to read disk on a black background with white text. I took the memory stick out and then it booted up ok. I did some work on a word document and saved it, when I closed and tried to open it I got all the pages loaded with the word count but they were all blank. I found a fix where u delete somethin in the regedit (http://www.msofficeforums.com/word/8181-all-my-word-documents-opening-blank.html) I did all these fixes from this site. I then tried opening it a few more times and I got an error i think something mse46 and something to do with converting, after clicking the X the document opened but with all squares on it (I cant remember if I got the error before or after the fixes) I thought it was a problem with the memory stick so I went on the PC and found one of the first saved versions (before I moved it to the laptop and worked some more on it), this opened fine so I put it on the new memory stick and one of my old ones. On the new memory stick I got the same issue but on the old one I didnt. Today I turned my PC on and it took forever to load. So, here's the problem: I've got four blocks of corrupted data on my memory card. I've tried deleting them, but it doesn't work. I would ignore it, except now I cannot save anything new on it; If I try, that data will also become corrupted.

I've been searching online and unfortunately have yet to find a solution. I've tried putting an audio CD in and then deleting the corrupted data....Clearly, that didn't work.

I have also tried to format the card, but here's the thing: I cannot find the option where it says to format! I was hesitant to consider the option to format the card at first, seeing as all my data will be deleted, but I'll get rid of it all if that allows me to able to use this memory card. I've went into the memory card (where i can look at all the data), seeing if there are any format options- none.

(I tried attaching a picture to show that the memory card does not have an option to format. There are only two options: "Enter" and "Back".)

Help anyone?

My Microsoft Outlook 2003 has been doing weird things the last 2 days. Initially everything displays correctly. Then it will start making the email envelope images disappear as my cursor goes over them and not let me open any messages. Also if I move my cursor over the toolbars, the text display gets all corrupted. I have to close my Outlook and then open it up again to use it until it happens again. I am not having issues with any other software.

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 Display Occasionally Gets Corrupted

Yes I have an updated anti-virus and several malware software. I have run numerous scans and no virus has been detected. In doing further searching, we came across an article that show us how to check what add-ons were enabled in Outlook. We turned them all off and slowly added them back on to see which one if any was causing the problem. It appears that the Evernote add-on was causing the problem because it has not reappeared since it was disabled.

Thank you for your suggestion though.

I just started having this problem today.  Updated to the latest firmware a few days back on this 150w Thunderbolt Dock P5Q58UT#ABA per the e-mail "Critical Driver Alert - Apr 12 2017 HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware (ver 1.12 Rev.A)".  Today when plugging in my secondary display is corrupted.  To note I have two of the same docks, one at home and one at work with different monitors in each location.  I'm getting the same issue in both locations.  I don't think two docks went bad and the thunderbolt ports appear to be functioning.  Is there a way to rollback the firmware on these docks to see if that's the issue?   If not what are the next steps to resolve, any advice?  The normal troubleshooting steps on HP.com don't appear to address this.  Pics attached.

Well... I was playing World of Warcraft like usual and I got an error message that nvlddkmk display driver had stopped responding but I ignored it because it doesn't happen that often. Then I restarted World of Warcraft and I got the same message instantly. So I looked up what was wrong and found out I needed to update my display drivers. So I went to Nvidia's website which leads me to Dell.com and I downloaded the correct drivers and followed their directions to install them and restarted my computer. When I restarted it the display was so choppy and unreadable that I couldn't do anything. I could log by luck by clicking around the screen to find my name but when I logged in, the same thing, it was still 95% unreadable. Then I restarted my computer to see if anything changed. It was still too choppy to read and all I could make out was the screen where it says your computer didn’t start successfully and the options were I think "Startup Repair (recommended)" and "Start windows normally" it was too choppy to be sure. I chose the recommended one and it did its thing then restarted but this time when it restarted nothing came up. It was just a black screen with vertical dark green lines with a large gap of just black about 3/4 the way across the screen and then more vertical dark green lines. I have tried turning on my computer after that and the same thing happens. So because it all happened after updating/installing new display drivers, I w... Read more
