Preferred Solution: Windows media player display media changing and can't play

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

Is there anyway in Windows Media Player 11 to play media without displaying skin, meaning only the media is displayed. Full screen display basically does that with controls being hidden and then activated by cursor movement. ATI does that with it media player by allowing you to hide/display border/controls.

Thanks for any help!

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

A:Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

Hi,
I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).
Thanks

I have WMP 12, with Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64-bit machine.  WMP 12 will no longer play any CD's.  They will not auto start when inserted into the CD-DVD drive nor will they start by manually selecting the tracks.

I know the CD-DVD drive works because I have downloaded VLC Media Player and every CD's I have installed plays through it.
It is WMP 12 that is not recognizing a CD.
All of the MS support articles I find here, end up sending one back to solutions for WMP 8 to 11, which does not apply, as the described steps and selections do not exist is WMP 12.

I'm running WMP version 9.0 on a P2 350 MHZ computer. I have 256 RAM installed and are having problems getting the player to play audio samples from the web. For example: I'm interested in hearing a certain track on amazon.com's site; I scroll down to the CD's track listing and are offered a chance to "listen" to a certain song. I'm assuming that it isn't the ENTIRE track so it shouldn't take long to steam it. I have a DSL line and it takes a long time to try to get the song to play so I just quit out of it. One time I waited nearly 5 minutes and still no music. Is there a reason why WMP 9.0 isn't working with my setup ?? If I click on WMP (launch the program) my video and audio works WITHIN that but not when I try to sample a song from another website. What can I do to fix this ? Is upgrading to version 10 the answer? Before I purchase a CD online I'd like to hear what's on it first. You can't download these samples, you can only listen to them. Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I have recently built a new PC and installed Windows XP Home with SP2.

I have installed a fairly standard CD-RW/DVD combo, all mainboard chip support software has been installed. DVD'S play back perfectly and all sound functions seem to work fine but when I attempt to play back a CD a box comes up indicating that Windows cannot play the file because the file path may be wrong.

I installed a secondary media player just to make sure it was nothing to do with the drive and it played ok, so I know that technically everything is fine, codecs are installed and the drive can be found. I uninstalled the secondary player and went on the hunt for a technical solution from Microsoft, the explanation below is all I can find.

C00D1197: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.
The path to the file is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Open URL dialog box, verify that the file name is spelled correctly and that the path to the file is correct, and then try again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.

I have Windows Vista on my laptop and have never had a problem playing and burning CDs until now. Suddenly I can't play CDs, although the Windows Media Player can see it's there, and I get an error message saying "WMP encountered an error when reading the CD drive in digital mode. Click OK to switch to analog mode. Click cancel to retry playing in digital mode".

When I click OK nothing happens for a while and then the error message repeats itself.

I have been to the Tools section and properties for the CD drive and under Playback "digital" is already selected, "analog" is in "pale" writing and won't let me select that even if I wanted to.

Any advice please?

for some reason I can't play video files on the net, I get this error message:

''Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. In the Open URL dialog, try opening the file using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").''

A:Can't Play Windows Media Player

This is the answer MS gives:

800C000D: The specified protocol is not supported
Windows Media Player does not support the protocol you are using to access the file. If you clicked a link on a Web page and received this error message, the link might not be valid. If you typed an Internet address and received this error message, ensure that you are using a protocol supported by Windows Media Player, and then try again.

A list of supported protocols and the correct syntax follows:
mms://server/filename (for example, a file with a .wma, .wmv, .asf, or .mp3 extension)
http://server/filename
mms://server/sami.asf?SAMI=http://server/sami/sami_demo.smi (SAMI file)

If Windows Media Player supports the protocol and you still cannot play the content, ensure that the Player is configured to use all of its supported protocols.
To configure protocol options
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/9series/playererrors.aspx#800c000d_0x00000000

A:Windows Media Player Will Not Play ANYTHING!

A lot of gray area with your problem but first I would try to pinpoint whether WMP is the problem. Could be:

Sound Card Drivers (anything else make sound?)
File Associations (Is WMP the default for .wav .wma .mp3 ?)
And then last a corrupt WMP9

I wouldn't waste time trying to repair WMP9 when WMP10 is available.

I would download 10 and that way you know it's intact.

A:Windows Media Player will not play DVD's

hello buddy,

You say your WMP previously could play DVD's, and that means you have installed a DVD decoder on your laptop, then i suggest you try the things as following:

1. Double-click the DVD file to open it, DO NOT drag & drop or click open from file menu;
2. If you are not using Windows Vista, delete the WMP and reinstall it;
3. If the two attempts above do not work or your are using Wins Vista, i'm afraid you will have to restore your Wins OS.
4. If you think restoring OS is not worth all the bother, just download and install VLC player to replace WMP. VLC player can play various video files including DVD's and BD's.

The above is all the solutions i can provide. Try them and let me know if they can solve your problem. Good Luck.

First thing I suggest doing is to run a cleaner on the drive (looks like cd but is special) and also clean the cd itself.
You might need codecs. K lite codecs is free and may help you. you can d/l it free at www.majorgeeks.com or www.download.com.

Howdy GLNW...

By any chance do you have InterVideo installed ?

The only time I've seen this error was when InterVideo was installed...

If you have it installed uninstall it, and get a different DVD viewer program...

Hey,Follow the instructions below Download FFDShow from here.Run the installer. Select your language and click Next. Now you must accept the license agreement of FFDShow, and click Next to continue. Now you can choose an install directory (default is fine) and click Next again. You are now on the Select Components screen, VfW Interface should be selected by default, but if it is not, then please select it.Click Next and select a start menu folder (default is perfectly fine again), Click Next again and now you reach the "Select Additional Tasks" screen. It is important now that you ensure that under "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow", H.264 / AVC, DivX, and XviD options are selected. Scroll down further until you reach "Decode the following audio formats with ffdshow" and just ensure that AAC is selected and also selecting MP3 won't do any harm. (these settings are usually default) When you click Next, you will come to a "Management of compatibility issues" screen. It is recommended to leave the option to use FFDShow for video only with the programs listed beneath to prevent any compatibility problems with other software. Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player will be in here. Click Next and you will get the same screen again, this time for audio. Click Next and select your speaker setup (if you only have 2 speakers, its stereo). Click Next again and then "Install".

When the installation is finished, yo... Read more

Hi, what version of DirectX are you using, you should have "Version 9". I you already have that version , un-install & re-install your WMP.

Hello, I can't play dvd's on my laptop running windows xp pro sp3 with windows media player 11. when I try to play the dvd it tells me that i do not have the proper codec. So I installed PowerDVD 7.0. Now I can play my dvds with PowerDVD 7.0 just fine but not in wmp. Every time I insert a dvd the PowerDVD program immediately opens. How can I play dvds with WMP?

my friends laptop running xp pro sp3 i just pop in the dvd and a menu comes up asking if I want to play with windows media player, power dvd, real player, quick time etc. so I choose wmp and the dvd plays just fine.

I work for a training company, where some trainers play audio CDs during breaks, participant exercises, etc. In earlier versions of Windows and Windows Media Player, they could put a CD in the tray and it would play automatically behind the slide show. With Vista/WMP 11, inserting a CD always brings WMP to the foreground.

I have gone through all WMP settings, Program Features/AutoPlay settings and all WMP documentation and KB articles--to no avail.

Any ideas?

Probably no help, but I have found version 11 to be a huge pain in other ways too. I would suggest uninstalling it and installing version 10

Hi folks,

Sorry I honestly don't know where to turn anymore with this.

My Windows Media Player won't play WMA nor WMV files anymore.
It keeps telling me that the codecs aren't installed
WM9 codec
Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
Windows Media Audio 9 Pro

The problem I keep running into everywhere is that under Vista WMP11 is an integral part so there's no way to re-install/fix it. Codec packs like K-Light or Vista Media Pack don't fix this either.

So I'm just generally stuck with trying to find any solution to fix this.
After almost a week of trying to solve this any ideas would realllllyyy be welcome at this point. I'm hoping to avoid re-installing Windows if at all possible.

Whenever I used to click on a link for a music video or video clip, my Windows Media Player would automatically open and play it. For some reason lately, it won't. The only thing that happens is at the bottom of my screen it says "downloading from www..." I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but this is driving me crazy! : Any suggestions?

Hi,
That doesn't sound too good. Could be something to do with Virus/spyware. But first, if you right click the media file, open with, and select windows media player, does it do the same?
Also, have you tried just opening Windows Media Player manually? What happens then?
If none of that works, go throught the "Having problems with spyware/viruses?" in my sig.

Ok, i basically cannot play any wmv or asf files in windows media player 9. I have windows xp pro and have reinstalled wmp at least 3 times and it doesn't work. When i try to play either one of these files, i get an error that says "windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close" and all that. I check what file it said it was associated with the error and it was appcompat.txt. well, i checked this file, deleted it, and even after that the error still says it's one of the files involved. I have tested all other file types, audio and video and they all work. I have tried multiple wmv files and they dont work. Playing these on any other players (Bs player, the core player, divx) however, works fine. It has gotten to be really annoying because i can't stream videos in internet explorer without internet explorer shutting down either. Noone seems to know what to do... any help is appreciated.
