Thinkpad Edge keyboard gone crazy

Q: Thinkpad Edge keyboard gone crazy

Hey guys, Had my Thinkpad Edge E450, for more than a year now. Never really had any problems with the keyboard. However, since yesterday, my keyboard has simply gone crazy on me. Right shift + c no longer registers, even though right shift + any other key still works. c works too along with c+ left shift. w+e keys, when pressed together doesn't register the e although both keys registers fine when pressed individually. Most weird of all is the fact that F4, associated with microphone no longer works either when FN is locked and when it isn't. However, every time I press the G key, the microphone activates/deactivates. I used the lenovo diagnostics tool and the keyboard passed the tests. Tried clean install windows 10 on the whole system and still the same result. Also tried uninstalling all drivers for keyboard in device manager and it still hasn't gotten any better. I didn't do any manual updates or anything that I know of which could affect the keyboard. Please help! That microphone popup is trying to hog my attention whenever I try to write a paper.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all, I've read a couple of postings but have not found a solution for my problem regarding an upgraded backlit keyboard for my E531 which shows no backlight. I installed the keyboard an connected the two flat cables to the mainboard. Other notebook seems to use additional cables for backlighting, but this one seems not to. Unfortunately there is no backlight turning on. When I press Fn + Space instead a space character is typed. There is a lighting key marked on the left side of the space bar model type is KM BL-106D0, FRU is 04Y2399. Any ideas? DoI need to make some settings or adjustments? I bought the keyboard on Ebay, it was marked as compatible with my E531.  Kind regardsKlaus

I am also having this problem, did you get an answer?I upgraded my non-backlit keyboard to the backlit style, and it is working perfectly except for the back light. Is this keyboard part number incompatible with this motherboard?

Hello! Yes, i know. let me pre-emp this. I am getting an out of warranty Thinkstation, ThinkCentre either Edge 71 or S20/S30 series. I am going to put in a Seasonic Fanless PSU there. And probably some Nocture case fans. Now with CPU fan, if i put an aftermarket heatsink there, with after market fan, would BIOS throw error? Anyone tried using aftermarket CPU fans in their Thinkcentre or Thinkstation? what about... just... no CPU fan? can we boot without a CPU fan, for some super heatsink/heatpipes/watercooled system? CheersNelson

I have been using Firefox 1.x for many many years. I stopped using IE when IE7 came out (couldn't stand the GUI). I don't use IE at all anymore. I use Chrome as a backup browser.

Since installing Windows 10 on my machine I haven't really considered using or trying out the new Edge browser. So last night I started reading up on it and experimenting. I like the sand boxing feature.

So I imported all my bookmarks from Firefox and added the Adblock Plus extension. I also installed the Roboform extension but I need to upgrade my version of Roboform before it'll work.

I then had Edge and Firefox side by side on my dual monitors and interestingly, they almost look the same!

There are some nice touches like setting tabs aside and pinning a tab. The one thing that is annoying is that you can't set new tabs to open to a specific URL...grrr.

I also have a folder of daily links I always open in Firefox (you right click the folder and select open all in tabs and every bookmark opens). I tried this in Edge and it worked too. If I do this in Edge it does use more memory though:

This is with about two dozen tabs. I don't mind the memory usage at all as I have 32GB and free memory is wasted memory!

So before trying Edge I hated it. Not sure why as I had hardly ever used it or given it a chance. Now I am now planning on using it for a month to see how it goes.

Am I crazy for joining the 2% of the market share that actually use Edge? Is Edge a waste of ti... Read more

A:Am I crazy for wanting to use the Edge browser?!

I hate Edge and I will
when I gave it some chances, it always failed me. There is almost nothing edge has but chrome/firefox doesn't have
furthermore, their extension support is questionable because I don't think developers will update their extensions as frequent as for chrome/firefox and they may drop the support permanently

the browsing speed was not impressive and the most importantly, the disk activity was x2-3 compared to chrome. I felt the pain while using it, it was so sloooooow. It's hard to notice if you use an SSD. Edge will degrade our SSD/HDD if we use it extensively

chrome also has sandboxing feature, Firefox has partially implemented it
google safebrowsing is definitely better than smartscreen for edge and after a malware passes through google SB, it will go through windows's smartscreen => double protection

Hi,I need a new charger for my thnkpad edge e145 but I'm a bit worried about the specs on the chargers that I have found. On my battery it says that the voltage is 10.8V and current is 5.8Ah but all the adapters I have found that are supposed to be compatible with my laptop have a voltage around 20V and current around 4.5A. For example this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-AJP-IBM-Lenovo-THINKPAD-EDGE-E145-20BCA00L-90W-Ac-Adapter-Charger... Since I don't know anything about how laptop batteries and chargers work I have no idea if a charger with those specs will work for my laptop. Most forums I have looked at seems to suggest that if the current is to low on the adapter it will overheat or not work at all and that to much voltage in the adapter could damage the laptop. Could someone tell me if a charger like this will be safe to use with my laptop? Unfortunately I don't have the charger that came with the laptop anymore so I can't compare it to the new ones. I also couldn't find any information on the adapter on lenovos website or in my hardware maintence manual.

Purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e520 1143-cto from Lenovo in December, 2011 and now it won't power-up. I plug it in wall, press the power button and nothing. 1 year warranty expired December, 2012.

Can't be the power cord: 1) Tried a cord from another Thinkpad (R61i back in 2008 that's slow but still works) but still get no power, and 2) Edge's cord powers up R61i.

Price to fix probably beyond what the laptop's worth but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks.

A:Solved: Thinkpad Edge won't power-up

Those models have a faulty EEPROM chip on the motherboard. However there is no recall on them so you will have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. The cheapest and best way to get it fixed is to call Lenovo and buy an extended warranty for about $130(I think) and then use the newly purchased warranty to get a warranty claim to send it in. Turn around is one to two weeks and shipping is covered both ways. The only upside is that you then have a warranty again on the laptop for other possible issues.

I am presently researching to purchase a laptop for my wife at Christmas who is a teacher thus she will need to access the internet, do Office work, grading, emails, research, etc., but no gaming at all.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

Thanks!

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.

About a week and a half ago, my laptop got its first ever virus since owning it for 5 years. So, I wiped it using a handy dandy data destruction software.  Got everything set back up, but now...none of my video editing software will work.  I think its a driver issue - i know i am missing at least a few of them since wiping. But i do not know which ones specifically i am missing.  Is there a way i can pull up a list of all the drivers i currently have, PLUS the ones i still need? Like, my aspect ratio.  Its in proportion, somewhat.  Its just a tad bit...stretched.  I use to know how to fix that, but now, for the life of me, i can not remember how to do it. I know i need a new computer, but i dont have the funds right now to get one.  Plus, this one suits me just fine.

Been navigating a few different forums quite a bit for this one.We downgraded this Lenovo E431 to windows 7 to fit our corporate environment. There is no disable option in the BIOS.The windows 7 drivers do not add the UltraNAV tab. Always fails on the 3rd portion as the 2 green check marks pass on the first 2 components and fail on the 3rd.  Ran under both the user and admin accounts. No other missing drivers. The device manager does not show any touchpad drivers aside from a "universal" mouse driver which can not be uninstalled.Registry mod will not change this. Aside from pulling the ribbon cable out I am sort of at a loss.  First time ever being stumped by a touchpad.....Last time ever buying an E431 for our environment, we've had 3 of these so far and nothing but issues. Sticking with other Lenovo models. Any ideas?

A:Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

I realize this is an old question, but my reply may help some with the same new question.  There's a quick answer for those who know what they are doing and a longer answer for those who don't. On my Lenovo Edge 2-1580 I couldn't turn off the detestable touch pad.  Here's the part you know:Because this is a Synaptics touchpad, the option to disable it if an external mouse is connected, simply isn't there.   You also might know that if you go into regedit and look for  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change the value to 33 it should work ... but doesn't. What I found is if you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change THAT value to 33, reboot your computer, it does indeed work!  Pull the receiver from the USB port and the touchpad starts working again! For those not familiar with regedit, your best option is to find someone who is and have them do it because editing the registry is not something you want to be doing if you don't know what you're doing. To give you an idea of how dangerous it is, read this article on what the registry is and how your computer can stop working if you mess it up, http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/what-everybody-should-know-about-windows-registry.htm Now that I've scared the newbies and made them understand how critical it is, it isn't difficult to do this little fix if you can follow instructions.  So here are the step by step instructions for you.&nbs... Okay, a School-issued ThinkPad Edge. It was bought new with a Windows 7 and an intel core i3 processor. I download Skype, and part of the set-up process is the mic part, and that's how I found out that the BUILT IN mic DID NOT work. I've looked around,
but all of the solutions I see I've either already tried, or wouldn't work in this situation (For example, the computer's original OS is Win7, it's not going to be an outdated sound card!) Does anybody have a specific solution? I've tried going in and messing
with the sound levels and the boost, I've made sure the mic wasn't muted. I even have the little green check in that one part saying that it should be working! I have no idea what else to do, and this is a serious issue for a lot of people. I can survive without
the mic for a while, but not forever. I would also appreciate it if I didn't get a hundred people saying that they're having the same issue. If you have a suggestion on how to fix it, then great! Maybe complain a little about your issues with the mic as you're
doing so, but if you're not giving a possible solution, then
please don't say anything here. Hope I get an answer soon! <:)

Hello, I have a Thinkpad e550 that I bought last year. Yesterday while typing my term paper I realized that some of the keys(s,k,d) were not working. Then i realized that the entire function keys row wasn't working either. Upon closer investigation I realized that this was because of the fn key always being depressed(not physically). So I went to the BIOS and swapped the control and the fn key. After a reboot I found that all my keys are working, but the fn key(which is now mapped to the ctrl key) isn't. Is there any fix to this? It seems weird that the function key is always depressed when mapped to fn but doesn't work at all when mapped to ctrl. It's been only a week since my warranty expired and I'm hoping to avoid replacing the hardware. Thanks
