I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello fellow tech-heads,

When I right click on any folder to try to get the properties, nothing will happen. The explorer title bar will grey out as if it becomes a part of the background, but there is no foreground properties window. I can get the properties on any individual file without any problem. Consiquently, I can't get the properties when I right-click on my hard drive to get to the tools so I can run chkdsk. I'm running an anti-virus program (Norton) and I have the most recent updates. I cleaned out the registtry using "Registry Medic", and yes, I know that it probably caused the problem, but the system runs perfectly with the exception of this one problem.

Any suggestions???

I recently upgraded my SpywareBlaster software from 2.0 to 3.0 and now I can’t access menu options on any file folder on my Windows XP Pro. I know that it added, or changed or added a registry key, but I don’t know where to go in the registry to look for the problem. I know that the file folder is a “class”, but I don’t know the extension. If I highlight any file along with a file folder, I will get a drop-down menu, and can use my choices in the “File” menu in Windows explorer. This problem happened after I installed the software…I did not do a spyware check and I realize that some spyware software will think that the registry key is spyware, but this is not the case, since the problem only occurred after I installed the software. I have Norton Systemworks and several registry cleanup/repair utilities and I’ve tried them all, with no success. I’ve run a system file check and system restore (before the software install), but with no success. I am spyware free and virus free. I have tried to do an “upgrade” on a Windows XP install, but no success. I know that the next possible solution would be to do a clean install, but I would like to try and avoid that, if at all possible. It’s more a matter of incontinence, since my OS and other programs work perfectly and the startup/shutdown doesn’t yield any stop errors.

Hello, I recently got a new computer running Windows 7, and I wanted to see about changing the folder view--not the folder tree, but the way the actual folders appear, specifically for folders containing photos. I do digital graphics and designs. I have a lot of photos in different folders, and my old computer displayed each folder as a flat, square folder with 4 little preview images of what is in the folder. The new version of Windows displays the folder vertically with the folder open and the documents/photos inside spilling out, it is difficult to tell what is in each folder, I really want to go back to the old way. I looked in the folder options in the control panel but don't see anything for a classic view. Please tell me there is a way to view the folders in Windows 7 like in the old XP....Thanks!!

Hi;

I have a folder of home videos that I back up to a USB key with Syncback. The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder. But here's the thing; If I right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties', it tells me I have 564 files in 85 folders, taking 2.67Gb.

However, if I open the folder and search for *.* to show all the files, then select all, right-click, 'Properties', it tells me I have 2224 files in 249 folders taking 6.41Gb. Still, at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says 649 items selected.

This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key.

Treesize also shows 2.67Gb for both folders.

In fact as far as I can figure, what with everything else on the same USB key, there wouldn't even be room for a 6Gb folder.

I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see.

Can anyone please explain this anomaly? I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out!

On my PC, In my device manager I can not view the display adapters (there must be something installed and I do not have visiblilty?? correct??)

Also, on my display properties I do not even have the option for Multiple monitor support. (these are the same PC's)

I inserted my Drivers and Utilities CD from Dell, but I did not see any driver on there that was applicable to a display adapter.

Hello Friends,

Over the past few days I have noticed that my Folder Properties (Right Click > Properties) doesn't show the 'folder size' or the 'number of files/folders' the folder contains.

In the General Tab of the Folder Properties the following is displayed:

Size : 0 bytes
Size on disk : 0 bytes
Contains: 0 Files, 0 Folders

Everything else works fine. This problem is specific to the folders. In case of files all details are shown as usual.
In fact when I bring my mouse over the folders the tool tips DO show the folder size and also names of files they contain.

Also this is not because of the folder being empty or anything as this problem is for ALL folders invariably including the Windows folder.
I have tried using Command Prompt. The 'dir' command can list the folder size with no problems.
I also have all requisite permissions as I am the admin. Also UAC etc. is in place.

Additional Details: I have no problems moving folders, copy pasting etc. whatsoever and the computer is working totally fine. Only this problem stumps me.

Please help.

Exactly what the title says. When i try to view properties on anything from a desktop shortcut to a disk drive the computer wont let me. No error box or anything it just wont open properties.

I found a question similar to this but the answer required some addres bar in "my computer" (eg. C:/program files/example) but I dont have that on "my computer". Is that another problem? Can it be fixed or will I have to work around it?

A:unable to view properties

Hi Nube, thats an interesting delema. I don't think I have ever heard of this occuring. Let's see if you and I can figure out whats going on here. Now if you right click on a short cut there is usually no properties to click on, but the disk drives should have a properties option. Let's see if its just the short cuts and disk drives or if it's everything. Go to start - control panel. Then click on systems icon. Click on the device manger button. Then choose something in there and right click it. See if you get a properties option there that you can open. Then let me know.

I will monitor this thread throughout the day. If you resolve this problem on your own or with the info I provided please let me know so I can move on to other issues. Also please mark this thread solved using the quick tools option located at the top of this thread.

As with prior versions, in [Windows] Explorer's main window, you can enable hovering to select and single clicking to expand the folder (but that is a pain in the rear when working with files). Windows XP folder view nicely allowed single clicking the folder name to expand the folder. Was that removed from Windows 7? Looks like the only way to expand a folder in folder view is to either click on the small plus sign or to double click on the folder name.  Or is there a switch somewhere I am missing? Thanks.

Hi,
It seems that you are talking about the navigation pane (the left pane) in Windows Explorer. Is that correct?
The feature is not present since Windows Vista. When we click on the item, the sub windows will be displayed in the main pane (the right pane). In the navigate pane we can only click the plus button or double-click on the folder to open it. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi All. Baffled again by Microsoft's incomprehensible format...

Set up a quick view this morning, (stupid move) and now cannot get back to my account folders view... so for example to view recently sent items, quick view will only allow me to see all 3000 - everything I have ever sent... WHY?

If I un-click the quick view option, there is nothing in the folders pane, how do I return to the 'account folders view'?, each with their own inbox, sent box, deleted item etc

WLM has an 'all inbox' option, is there an option for 'all sent' or all drafts' etc files that have not been moved to 'storage folders' but are still live like the 'all inbox' files?

Is there a way of simplifying this bloated all or nothing menu? So much simpler and user friendly - like menus and shortcuts that AREN'T hidden.

Cheers - any help greatly received

I have a user who has a machine with a single local account on it. They can log in using the account and we need them to edit their TCP/IP settings in order to have them connect to us and join our domain. As I said, there is only 1 local account on the machine.

The problem is I get as far as having them get to the adapters, right-clicking on the Local Area Connection and selecting properties to get to the TCP/IP settings and UAC pops up saying they need to enter an administrator username and password.

They enter the only account on the computer which definitely has admin privileges (it would have to as the only account anyway) and it tells them that isn't an admin account and they still don't have permissions to view the LAC properties. And of course the same deal if they try to turn UAC off.

But it doesn't matter which button i press, nothing happens anyways.

As i said above, the file shows up on my desktop. But if i browse to my desktop using the explorer, it isn't there.

If you have not restarted since the file was created do that. See if you can remove it. If it still refuses to go away, try booting to safe mode to remove it.

Every single time I view any file's properties (context-menu right-click -> Properties), it always immediately launches an installation of an already-installed (but disabled) application! Whaaat the heck is going on?

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Pro/SP1. The app it keeps trying to install is MacDrive 8, but I think that may be more incidental than anything else. I say that because I experienced the exact same thing perhaps 5-7 years ago under 32-bit XP Pro/SP3, except it tried to install something else (I can't recall what). Although MacDrive 8 is already installed, I almost never use it, and so I've disabled all the services and all other startup stuff related to MacDrive using my startup manager. So the puzzling fact that Win 7 is so desperate to install MacDrive again is truly weird, and extremely annoying!

It usually takes three attempts to cancel the unwanted installation, after which the file's property window comes up normally.

I've thoroughly scanned for malware, and found none. Also, I've some reliable registry check and repair tools: Iolo's System Mechanic's Registry Tuner, and Wise Registry Cleaner. Afterwards, no registry errors were reported at all.

What the heck is going on? What bizarre connection is there between viewing a file's properties and a forced install of anything?

A:Huh? Whenever I view any file properties, Win7 tries to install something!

If you have no use for MacDrive, why not uninstall it altogether instead of disabling its components? If you wanna keep it though, reinstall it to fix whatever part of it is broken. Reinstalling will most likely re-enable disabled components.

We can test if the setup launches because of the disabled functionalities by enabling MacDrive and attempting to reproduce the problem. If it goes away when MacDrive is enabled, then it means disabling it is the reason for the setup application launching every time you right-click. If the problem occurs whether MacDrive is enabled or not, that would indicate a corrupt installation and reinstalling is necessary to fix it.

Stay away from registry cleaners if you do not have advanced knowledge on the Windows Registry's internals. Running that cleaner might as well be the reason for this problem to begin with because some valid entry for MacDrive might have been deleted/altered after being flagged as an invalid/erroneous entry by the registry cleaner thus breaking the MacDrive installation.

This is something that has puzzled me for ages. I open a directory which has some sub-directories and some stand-alone files. I do view details. All Included Folders and subfolders in a library will always share the same folder view. You can have separate Arrange by view settings in each added New folder in the library though.

Hello, I have a Windows 7 Ultimate.

Recently I have been unable to change or even access some settings on my pc. I can't access user accounts- when I click on it, nothing happens. Same with other stuff like my screen saver and sounds. This is also happening when I click on the properties of a file. I right click on the file, click properties and nothing opens. This happens with all files (folders, pictures, documents...).

I have run several antivirus scans on the computer, opened it in Safe mode, done the sfc/scan too. Nothing has appeared to be wrong apart from the above.

A:Unable to access all pc settings and view properties of files

You should only have one anti-virus. More than one can cause them to conflict with each other.

Hi! I have a problem that I've never seen before. When trying to access properties via right click from a specific desktop icon, the shortcut goes straight to the taskbar, but will not open the properties window. I am trying to access the target box. This only occurs on 2 desktop icons. With all other icons on my desktop I am able to access properties. The 2 icons are Phoenix Viewer and Hippo OpenSim viewer. I have recently done a reformat of my computer and this problem has only surfaced from that time. I have ensured that show all hidden files is checked, so am not sure where to go from here to solve this problem. Can you help?

A:[SOLVED] Unable to view Properties in desktop Icon

Try deleting the icons you're having trouble with and then open your START menu, go to ALL PROGRAMS, mouse over the program you're having issues with and right-click it and select SEND TO and then DESKTOP (create shortcut). All we're basically doing is creating a new shortcut to see if your previous shortcut got jacked up somehow.

Good day!

Mike

Hi,

I am not new to Windows at all, but I am trying hard to get this view back in my Windows 8 File Explorer from Windows 7.
(I need to link to a pic, as I do not know the correct terms for it.)

I think it is possible, just do not know how to get the disk size and space used properties to show.

This morning I attempted to view the properties of one of my drive in Windows explorer. Properties is a selection on the context menu, but clicking it does absolutely nothing. I have 3 drive in my system and the same behavior is true for all of them.

To add to the mystery, properties works fine for files, directories and Computer. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1 fully patched.

Anyone have a clue on this one?

A:Can't view drive properties -- strange, weird, bizarre!

Hi Whitesmith,

My name is Raj

Every single time I view any file's properties (context-menu right-click -> Properties), it always immediately launches an installation of an already-installed (but disabled) application! As Betty Jo Bialosky so famously asked: Whaaat?

A:Weird: Whenever I view any file properties, it tries to install thing!

Uninstall Mac Drive 8. See if that fixes the problem. If yes, install the latest version and see what happens if you still want to use it.

Is there a freeware program to view WZC profile information from the command line? I found one that allows you to display the profiles themselves, however to display the profile properties I haven't found one.

I could also use direct registry edits if I had to, using the reg command. The problem being, that it would appear that the information is stored in binary format, which I've got no idea how to even manually pull the profile name from. The only thing that information seems to give me, is the abillity to later manipulate the order of the networks, that is maybe. I don't need that part yet, but will later on. I guess, since viewing the profiles is so slow, direct registry edits "might" be preffered. This is WZC I'm concerned about, not any third party utillities. I'm using Windows XP, and it's SP2 or later.

A:View Wireless Network Properties from the Command Line

Researching further, it looks like nobody knows how to pull the information from the registry. I've got Windows XP, so netsh wlan won't work. It looks like this is leaving me now with 2 solutions to get some of this information.

Solution 1: Use some kind of programming API to get the information and display it from the command line. I've therefore heard that there seems to be an interface called the WZC native API. If that's true, how would you use it in AutoIt or in a BATCH file or in a VBScript? I've never used anything like it before, so I need detailed explanations of what the code does, except for that doesn't mean I need to know all the internals of every function. But I need to know how to use it. I know BATCH files well, but I don't really know the full VBScript or AutoIt languages, though I can make some of it's code out anyway.

Solution 2: Somehow maybe use AutoIt in another way to read the properties from the dialog box. I know from research that this is probably possible, but I don't know how to do it. And what I need to do, is hide all that visible clicking going on, even if I'm doing some clicking. That is - hide it from the end user. It's nice to see it moving on the screen, but I'd rather not see it if I were the end user, in this case.

Now keep in mind, that at this point, all I'm trying to implement in these programs, is a way to do exactly what you can already do in Windows XP by default (b... Read more

As of today I can't do the following anymore:

- deleting folders using shift-del or just del
- view properties of folders and files using RMB
- view properties by using the "file" menu in the window-bar
- view properties of the files for which ZoneAlarm gives a warning

I can delete stuff by dragging it into the Recycle Bin and then emptying it.

I think the last thing I did before all this was uninstalling Norton 2005 Trial and installing AVG Anti-Virus.

I tried solving it by Windows' System Recovery, but that didn't work. I tried to see if there was a special recovery-option for vital files on the Windows CD, but if it's there, I can't find it...

Help?

A:Can't use Shift-Del, can't use RMB on folders/files, can't view properties of file...

Try Running the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Following a recent re-installation of XP I've found that a huge chunk of my jpegs are inaccessable. (can't view, preview, print, copy, move, rename, etc)

It seems that the affected jpegs have lost their property data.

Can the property data be restored / edited / recreated? or have I lost my photos for good?

Hello, I want what's inside the external hard drive, to look the same no matter the pc it's plugged into.
So, I found how to change Folder Icons permanently from another thread,..
Now, what remains is changing the folder view, or else the icons won't be clear, so is that even possible?
PS. I know it's kinda OCD ..

A:External Hard Drive, Permanent Folder View (Folder Icon Size)

I did some research , and found that it was possible on windows xp via the "desktop.ini" through "FolderType=string" (eg: pictures, videos), but it seems it's impossible on windows 7.
The reason is that the " Show Common Tasks" in Folder options has been removed from windows 7.

My laptop has a built in SD card reader.  I just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition and have installed all available Window updates.
When I go to:
Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View "tab"
and uncheck the box for "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder", the SD card reader still does not appear when I go into the Computer folder.

I have also tried going into the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
to change:
HideDrivesWithNoMedia
from 1 to 0, but that does not work either.

Can someone please help me get my SD card reader to appear in the Computer folder even when there is no card inserted into it?
Thanks.

A:Not working: Folder Options -> View -> Hide empty drives in the Computer folder

The card readers on my desktop computer (one connected internally via a USB header on the motherboard), one on my monitor and one on my printer all work the way they should.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is checked, none
of them are visible in the Computer folder.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is unchecked, they all become visible.

The card reader in my laptop is connected internally via micro-USB, but it's different.  It does not actually appear in the Device Manager until a card is inserted into it.
That's probably why the "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" does not work with my laptop's card reader.

Hi there! This is my first post, so I hope this is in the right section, etc...

I'm using Windows XP and I've been having problems with some MP3 files in regards to album artwork and tagging. I've discovered that it's my album folders that have been tagged (most likely by me) to have a custom Folder Picture.

I want to remove all the Folder Pictures from my music album folders. I fear I will have to do one by one (which is a LOT!) unless I can find a reverse procedure in the program I suspect caused this to happen. That program is Tag&Rename, and I suspect I accidentally added custom pictures to these folders when I was adding album art to the individual music files.

ANYWAYS... When in Windows Explorer, and looking at the album folders in question, I can right-click on them and go to Properties. Then in the last tab, Customise, I can see a section called Folder Pictures. And there I see the album artwork on the folder. So I want that removed. However, clicking on the Restore Default button does NOTHING.

Could the folder be locked by Tag&Rename or something? I just tried playing with the Read Only Attributes of the folder, but it seems to make no difference.

When I'm in a folder and changes the folder view from, say, List to Extra Large Icons, the folder view changes for all the folders on my computer, which is a royal PITA. Is there any way to change the folder view only in the folder I'm in at the time and leave the setting for the other folders as is? Example: have picture folders set for Extra Large Icons and some document folders set for List and others, Details.

If this doesn't help I'm not sure what will outside some third party app,

Is there a way I can set this up so that when I open my Music folder that the sub folders inside are displayed in list view but when I open a sub folder the content is displayed in detail view without the whole thing reverting back to the last view I opted for? In other words...when I open my Music folder the sub folders are displayed as a list. That's fine. But when I open a sub folder to view the content I change the view to detail view. Then when I go back to the sub folders they've all changed to detail view too and I have to manually put em back to list view.

A:display properties

When you reinstall XP it begins using a generic driver that ships with XP. You will need to determine what type of graphics card you have in your system, go to that manufacturers website and download the appropriate driver.
