Windows XP double-click function on drive

Q: Windows XP double-click function on drive

The double-click function works fine on all items except for my D-drive icon, checked every setting I know to check, and have no idea what the problem could be. It is one of three partitions, and is the only one that doesnt except it. I know its not a big deal, but its driving me nuts. Please help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When folders are double clicked, they are supposed to open. But mine don't! Just randomly one day they stopped openning. Instead they open the "search in folder" window. When I right click the folder, instead of Open being the top function, Search... is the top, so double clicking automatically performs this function. I'm assuming it thinks I want Search to be the default function. Which brings me to my question: How do I change the default double click function to "Open"?

A:Double Click function

Search Companion Starts if you Double-Click a Folder.

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.

I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.

This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? I would like no new windows at all to open up.

A:Explorer opens multiple windows when I double click a drive

Go to Control Panel - Mouse properties. Reduce the Mouse Double Click Speed and check. This could be one of the problem.

A strange window appears on each of them...Also I can't select windows explorer to always open them since the 'always select this program to open this kind of file' checkbox is grayed out or disabled. Also when I right click on any of the three drives. Some weird symbols appear on the right click menu.I already scanned with malwarebytes and avast. They detect nothing.PLEASE help me solve this problem. I am desperate. I first had a problem when i was unalbe to open my drives by double clicking,
when addressing my problem to win XP-support forum they gave a solution by converting the "autorun.inf" to "autorun.bak" in the drivers root, this partially solved the problem .
they also suggested that i have an infection and they were right cause AVG has detected a threat and deleted it.
But after the first scan by AVG and restarting...it came on to a different infection :

So I did a little searching, no results. When I open up My Computer and I double click on my DVD-RW/CD-RW drive with whatever in, be it an audio cd or DVD, I get an error saying, " This does not have a program associated with it for performing this action."

Just curious as to if anyone else has come across this case. I'm well aware this problem occurs often. But, I've never had it occur in this sort of instance.

Any media will play just fine through autoplay, or by loading it through a media program. ( WMP, iTunes, etc.) I'm not too worried if the problem can't be fixed.

I currently run Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit op system.

i have the similar problem that another user had http://forums.techguy.org/security/520967-vbs-gaggle-e-cant-double.html?highlight=autorun.vbs. But i guess my problem more worst as it infected not only my C drive. Even my D drive (partition drive) and F drive (external hard drive) get infected too. I don't know when i get infected by the virus, but last nite my AVG Free Edition detected my pc was infected with Trojan Horse in all my hard drives (C,D,F). AVG can't heal it and went into the virus vault section.

Without knowing anything, i delete all the infected files. After removing those files, everytime i double click on any hard drives icon in "My Computer", i get the error: Can not find script file “C:\autorun.vbs”, “D:\autorun.vbs”, “F:\autorun.vbs” and the drive won’t open. I still can access my files through window explorer. When I right click on a hard drive, i can see weird text (See attached pictures)

Please help as i'm clueless and i'm not very good in pc stuffs. I don't want end up formatting my all my drives as i got alot of files in it. Thanks

I tried to find a related topic with search, but to no avail. if this is already here, sorry.

I have a user that examplifies the problem stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186
Which talks about folders starting search, instead of opening the folder.
I have searched the registry, but there were no entries as listed on this page.

I also found another article suggesting that I run "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll". This ran successfully, but did not fix the problem.

Update: problem solved...registry needs the listed entries from the microsoft page to be created if they are not there. I also found a script that will fix the problem. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

A:I Cant Open My C Drive Or Removable Disk Just By Double Left Click..

From what you describe, it appears to be a flash drive infection.Flash drive infections usually involve malware that loads an autorun.inf file into the root folder of all drives (internal, external, removable). When the removable media is inserted, autorun looks for autorun.inf and automatically executes a malicious autorun.bat file which calls wscript.exe to run autorun.vbs on your computer. When a flash drive becomes infected, the Trojan will infect a system when the removable media is inserted if autorun has not been disabled.Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Please respond with your ideas~

When I double click a drive or folder, the Properties dialog opens instead of the normal Open behavior. If I right click on a drive or folder, the default (hilited) action is "Move or Rename Audio Files". How do I restore normal behavior. I don't see any way to change the default open behavior like I could in XP via the Folder Options, File Types dialog. Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100

A:Double click a drive or folder opens the Properties dialog instead of the normal Open behavior

Thank you for posting.
If the issue did not occur previously, please just try System Restore first.
I suspect this issue may be also related to the mouse settings. Please go to ?Control Panel\Hardware and Sound? and click ?Mouse? and check your mouse settings; please ensure that the left button is set to ?Click? and right button is ?Right-click?.
You may also click the Restore Defaults to reset the mouse settings.
If you use some other application to manage the mouse, please also check the settings or just remove it.
Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

This is so weird, see the screenshot. This happened after booting up my pc today (running XP Pro SP3).I had a malware infection days ago and removed it almost completely (apart from random tabs popping up in Firefox).Last night I ran O&O Defrag and it finished without any problems or errors.I shut down the pc and then this morning I hung at startup.Safe mode hung at mup.sys and after some Googling I managed to 'fix' it by copying over the original registry (as detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;en-us;Q307545).Obviously that got me back to how Windows was just after the original install in 2007.So I restored the backup of the registry I made just days ago. This fixed everything but gave me this really weird thing in Explorer.Even though the names are wrong I can still click the C: drive and see all my files and folders.I can enter any folder but the moment I double click a file it will open the file in the associated program and crash explorer at the same time.I hope someone has a solution for this! Now

A:Drive names within Explorer completely changed, crashes the moment you double click any file.

The issue has been resolved.

Try another mouse set up your programs (Shortcuts) back to double click to open them.

I had a similar issue found out it was the button inside my mouse.

The thing is whenever i double click to open any folders/images anywhere on the pc except the desktop it always brings up the windows search page - does anyone know how i can stop this happening? Not only is it maddening its very very labourious right clicking and going to the open option.

Have you tried using Restore Defaults?

Open My Computer and select Tools and Folder Options. Then on the General tab click Restore Defaults.

I'm running XP Pro and for the last 2 months something has changed on shutdown. I open Start , Turn Off Computer, Turn Off and perform my normal one click but other than a whirring nose in the tower and the green light coming on momentarily on the floppy drive nothing happens. I have to go back and repeat the proceedure one more time for shutdown.

This also happens when installing a program and the window appears saying that it needs to reboot to install...when I click OK nothing happens. I have to go to Start, Turn Off Computer, and click on Restart.

I have also noticed that when my browser opens and I click on the dropdown menu for the stored URLs and it won't open on the first click, it flashes momentarily but it takes the second click to view. This only happens initially from then on the menu drops down on and subsequent single clicks work. The problem seems to have started around the time I started using Firefox as my browser.

Any suggestions?

My buddy just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5552 and fresh out of the box he cannot double click drag any windows.

If he wants to drag/move a window, he has to actually click and hold the button. He cannot use the trackpad.

He updated to the latest drives directly from Acer's website and it still doesn't work.

I searched google for any solutions and I found one post where the guy had the exact same problem, but no one replied with a solution.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Hello, I use a HP laptop & since the last few days I am not able to open any files or click on something since the left (main) key & double tap on the mouse pad are not working! Although I am able to move the cursor/pointer over the touch pad & the right click is working fine as well! I searched the entire internet & nothing seem to work! Could anyone help me please ? The last thing I remember doing that might have caused this problem (earlier everything was working fine but sometimes touchpad used to get stuck) is hitting the fn+f5 button that I read in this thread Touchpad not working for windows 10. - Page 3 - Windows 10 Forums Thanks!

A:Left Click & double tap not working in windows 10!

Hi, can you check you don't have Clicklock on? (see Control Panel, Mouse). How does a wired mouse behave?

Look in Device Manager and check when your touchpad driver was last updated. Check it's not the date your problem started.
