Annoying Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler

Q: Annoying Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler

Is there a way to disable the Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler? I find it very annoying because every time I select a song from any folder (MP3 file), a pop up window covering 1/4 of screen appears, blocking everything in that area.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After Windows Insiders installed update KB4046355 for the Insider Build 16299.15, they discovered that Windows Media Player had been silently removed from the computer. As Build 16299 is the Fall Creators Update that is scheduled to come out this month, it is unknown whether the removal of Windows Media Player is intentional as part of this large update or a bug.
Insiders not happy with missing Windows Media Player

The only way Insiders realized that Windows Media Player was removed was when they tried to use it to play a video. It was then discovered that Windows Media Player was silently removed after installing the October 3rd 2017 KB4046355 update. I have an issue that I scoured the internet for and haven't been able to find anything even close to an answer. Maybe I don't know how to use a search engine as well as I thought, because I can't find crap. Here's my issue: when listening to music using WMP (11, but it happened briefly using WMP 10 before I upgraded to 11), if I right-click an MP3 in Windows Explorer (the directory I have them saved in) the audio cuts out briefly. Once I select an option in the context menu it's okay; it only happens when I initially right-click the MP3 to bring up the context menu. Sometimes it will cut out for two or three seconds, sometimes for milliseconds. It's not a HUGE problem, it's just annoying as all get out. Color me impressed if anyone can solve this issue.

Whenever I logon to my system with any of the user ID's, I get the following error mssg w/ an audible from "Windows Media Player" in a pop open window:

"Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. Do you want to install the Player from the Microsoft Web site?"

The window has no other information and no controls except for "Close", "Yes" & "No" buttons.

I've had this problem ever since I installed WMP 9. ... and still have it w/ my current version, which is 11.0.5721.5145. I have gone to the site and executed the reinstall but it's made no difference to the error message. Clicking the "No" button causes the window to go away and the player seems to work just fine.

I'm running Windows XP Pro w/ SP2 installed and McAfee Firewall, Privacy Svc & Viruscan.

Any ideas?

In my computer, when you preview a office 2007 document, the preview handler works as it should; giving me a nice preview of the file I want to view. When I open Word and use the open file icon and search for a word doc, it will preview the file as it should. Now here is my problem. When I launch Excel or PowerPoint and use the same method of previewing a file as word, the file will not preview at all. If I change the file types to all and open a word doc, its will preview just fine. Also if I preview an Excel file through windows explorer, and then open Excel and preview a file by the open file icon it works as it should also. I was wondering if this is a bug with the office system and if there is a fix for this behavior. I am using Vista Ultimate X64.

One of my PCs is running outlook 2010 and for some reason some (not all) pdfs are getting this error:

This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer

PDF Preview Handler

I tried to just save them to desktop rather than viewing them in outlook but then I get this error:

To open this file in its own program, double click it.

Cannot create file: Individual Credit File.pdf. Right click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click properties on the shortcut menu to check
your permissions for the folder.

The pdfs aren't corrupted as the email account is imap and is also setup on another pc and it has no problem opening those pdfs, I also forwarded the email to myself and I was able to open them.

I tried removing the account and re adding it but that made no difference.

I read that this might be some registry error but I tried a few fixes but haven't had any luck.

A:24 addict with very annoying media player habit

Hi JAX666 and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the late reply - we normally try to answer within 24 hours.

Your log is clean. It could be hardware related but I'm no expert on that. I suggest you post in the Hardware Forum and see what help you get there.

In the meantime, I'd like you to do an online scan, just in case there is anything hiding.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner.

1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on See report then click Save report

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

Hi everyone

Last night I tried to find a program which will allow me to convert files from CD Audio and MP3 format to any format I choose (WMA for my PDA, MP3, etc). I also want to play and burn audio and MP3 CDs. Essentially, I want an all-in-one program.

All of this is easily findable, BUT... There is only ONE program I can find (tried about 10 last night) that is set up so that I can use the arrow buttons on my keyboard to skip thru tracks/fast forward and rewind, or the space bar as a pause/play, or other buttons as 'hotkeys' - it's the Axialis CD Player,

http://www.axialis.com/axcdplayer/index.html

However, this is a player only and costs $40 CDN. I can't believe that I can get freeware for everything I need but will have to pay $40 for this simple functionality. I would gladly pay $40 for a program that will take care of ALL my digital audio needs, including this important (for me) feature - being able to control the program from my keyboard instead of with the mouse and the GUI. Thanks as always, Nikku

Wow - must have been really tired last night - found something that may fit the bill at Axialis.

Still interested in knowing if anyone out there knows of any freeware that has the hotkeyt function - I am interested in fully functional digital media managers to simple CD player programs. Thanks again.

Hi,

We are having a problem on a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine running Windows media player 10. It says "this version of media player is incompatible" when you try and open it. We have tried removing version 10, and putting on 9 but you get the same problem. This happens if you download the install file from the website or install WMP from the WindowsUpdate site. Has anyone come across this before, or got any ideas on how to get WMP to work?

Thanks a lot,

I would like to run a batch file upon insertion of any CD into the CD-ROM drive of my system. I used TweakUI to create a new Autoplay handler that runs the batch file, but the problem is that it seems, by default, Autoplay can only handle inserted devices with Picture, Music, or Video files (or some combination of these). The CDs I am inserting have files of other types on them.

I am wondering if it is possible to associate an Autoplay handler with a specific non-media file type, or to have a handler handle any type that is non-media (not picture, music, or video).

Or, if there is any other, easier way to automatically run a batch file upon insertion of a CD, please let me know. Thanks!

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

A:Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.

I have some problems to sort the music files in the library. If there is an album with more than one disc, the sorting is like that: 1 - track 1 CD1 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD1 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... I would like more logical sorting like this: 1 - track 1 CD1 2 - track 2 CD1 etc... 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... Do you see what I mean ? It seems that WMP/WMC doesn't sort using the "disc number" tag of the file (as it should be). Is there any way to sort it fine without creating 2 different albums for a 2 disc album ? Thank you.

A:Windows media player 12 / Windows Media Center - Multiple-Cds Albums sorting in library

The strange "subtitle" answer above is not really a valid notion given the lack of persistence.  When you step back, you see as koawmfot noted that this is really about the use of the "Set" field.  WMP does not and will not use the Set field to sort.  Instead it uses Album title as Shark noted. So the correct answer here would be to use the Album title field as the descriptive identifier.  If you really don't want to do this, you can use the track number such as by setting t1d1 to be 0101, t1d2 to be 0201, and so forth.  So those are the viable solutions, really. The problem with "Set" is that it doesn't fit well within the Explorer namespace / folder views.  This is consistent with the player storing one album in one folder, as opposed to dumping everything to one common folder - where you may have issues with filename collisions depending upon your naming scheme. As such it is not supported and is unlikely to be supported, sorry.

A:Windows 8 Release Preview with Media Center cannot be upgraded to RTM

Ever find out an answer to this? Im having the same issue. I did the cversion.ini tweak but it wont let me upgrade. Thanks to your post I realized it was because of the media center addon.

I am trying to download an audiobook from my local library. I generally use Overdrive Media Console to do this. When I try to download the book I get an error message letting me know that my Windows Media Player needs a Security Upgrade in order to play the DRM files. It tells me to click on TOOLS in the Overdrive toolbar and then Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. When I do this, a dialog box appears and tells me to make sure I am connected to the internet (I am) and click OK. When I click OK - nothing happens. When I read the Windows Help file - it indicates that when I click OK in the dialog box in Overdrive, it is supposed to open WMP and another dialog box. It never does.
The Help file gives me a web site to go to where I can upgrade manually - this appears to be a Microsoft website. The Upgrade button here is grayed out.
I made sure I was using IE as the browser.
I opened WMP manually to see if there was anything I could upgrade manually there.
I can't even determine what version of WMP I have since the Properties button is grayed out.
I just bought this computer yesterday... it's running windows 8

If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! I very much miss my audiobooks and I am literally banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out!!!

thanks,
Krista

Hi guys,
Using my desktop pc (Windows XP Professional), I copied songs from my cds to the computer thru Windows Media Player and then moved all the songs to my portable hard drive.
I connected my hard drive to my laptop (Vista Home Premium) and tried to play the files thru Windows Media Player. Unfortunately, WMP 11 did not play the file but opened a Mozilla Firefox window leading to a site that would ask me to download license.
Upon clicking the 'Download License' button, I encountered the error that said I had to install Windows Media Services plug-ins.
I searched for this plug-in and found out that it was associated with WMP 9 and not WMP 11 so I thought installation might cause conflicts or might create more errors. I'm not so good at computer and I don't even know which to install when WMP website gave me too many options and downloadables.
These make me so frustrated and I don't even know if I could still copy my songs from my hard drive to my laptop and play them.
Could someone please help me out? Please...

Does anyone know if there's a stable plugin or codec for Windows Media Player 10, to play Real Player files streamed from the web? Thx for any help.

Not sure of a plugin for WMP but I use a program called Real Alternative, it plays RMV files faultlessly.

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?

That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

Hi,

I've been having problems listening to music on windows media player and watching flash videos. The playback is choppy (sometimes gets stuck and generally bounces around) but also my system seems to take an age to start up and is slow.

I've run disk-defragmentor, scandisk, spybot, adaware, AVG etc. But no luck.

This has come about since I've put about 20GB of music onto my laptop (I still have around 47GB of 70GB free). However, when Windows Media Player is not open the system still runs slowly and I have no luck running flash videos.

The only possible solution I can think of is deleting the music but I'm a bit hesitatant to do so because it took me ages to put it on!

Anyway, thanks very much for any help you can give me!

I have two pcs on a wireless network connected to a cable modem. One pc (Thinkpad) has no problem playing internet radio stations through wmp. The other one (Dell 4100) has problems with streaming audio. It can connect to the radio station fine (or download the audio file in either format) but then it keeps buffering while it's playing. I've tried just about everything I can find to fix it: editing the registry (MSoft tech note,) changing the network settings, changing the buffer rate but nothing seems to work. There is more than enough bandwidth to handle the flow of data, plus my cable company says it's not them (of course.) Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi: I was trying to record from a radio station a recording of someone I know who has written a music piece and by mistake I saw urge and downloaded the program. When I realized I did not want this program, I deleted it. There was a message not to do it--that it would block other users from logging onto the computer (Which is a violation of the anti-trust laws) however, I did not listen and deleted the entire program from the program files. Now I cannot get any music from the radio site and it has blocked real player. MSN should be sued again.HELP!!!

We may be able to choose which edition of Windows 8 to install, according to a new rumour. The Release Preview is expected to launch with 3 editions, that being the default (Core), Pro and Pro Media Center edition. Each edition includes additional features from one another, and will probably vary in price.

Microsoft may be planning to allow us to choose which edition of Windows 8 to install, according to a new rumour. The Release Preview is rumoured to come with three editions, a default (core), Pro and Pro Media Center edition. Obviously, the core edition of Windows 8 will be baseline, including no additional features.
The Pro edition of Windows 8 should include more features, and the Pro Media Center edition will include all that of the Pro edition, plus Media Center.
We're not too sure whether what you see above is real, for all we know, Microsoft could just launch the Release Preview with just one Release Preview. But that is unlikely, since this is the last version of previews before the official launch, so Microsoft need to get it's last bit of testing done.

Interesting...I'm glad that Microsoft actually now has legitimate differences between the OS versions. I thought it was silly to have Windows 7 Home, then Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise when all the different iterations were literally the same except for Xp mode in Ultimate and Pro and I believe HomeGroup in Home Premium.

I posted on April 22 and received no response then a friend told me a week later to respond to my post and say "bump" and this should get a response. I have received no response. If I am doing it incorrectly please tell me. I am having problems keeping WMP my default player ever since updating I-tunes and Quick time. My post on 4-22-2011 attempts to explain it. Hopefully you can help. Chevelle67

Hi,
I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).
Thanks

Our music files are in Real Jukebox. How can we put them into Windows Media Player? We tried drop and drag, but this doesn't change the type.

A:Real Player Files transferred to Windows Media Player

Depending on the file the might not work
unless you talking about converting them

If you can play them on media player

Highlight the File
hold down the shift key
And Right Click

Now use open with
The goto media player
and check the always use box
If you always want to use it to open
this file if it opens this file.

There is another way
In the start menu

Hi everyone!

When I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...

I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...

All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless guys! Take care!

OS: Vista 32 bit

A:Windows Media Player doesn't open media files on double click

What are the filetypes for those Video files? Maybe it's a Codec problem.
