Realtek/Windows Sound not working but detecting devices.

Q: Realtek/Windows Sound not working but detecting devices.

As the title suggests, my on board sounds, seem to have failed, every time I boot, I get a Windows Troubleshooter telling me that the audio devices and services are not enabled or started, the troubleshooter fails without any errors to report (will grab a screen of this when I can)

Here is a screenshot of my windows systray showing that windows says there are no audio devices along with my playback devices window, showing speakers connected (no volume marker next to it if you notice)

You can find my full system specs listed in my profile, don't really wanna type em out again.

I went into device manager and uninstalled all my sound and video drivers and re-installed all fresh from AMD/Realtek (AMD Omega Catalyst Version 14.12 and Realtek HD Audio Codec V2.75)

EDIT: ADDED Windows Troubleshooter Screens

Any assistance would be excellent.

Sry for large sized post, spoiler tags not working?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Realtek/Windows Sound not working but detecting devices.

What I recall, this is a Windows problem and not a problem with the sound drivers.

Run the SFC /scannow three times and see if that helps. It may take a reinstall.

I just installed a GTX 760 into my computer which previously had an AMD card. After I installed the card, my Realtek HD Audio Manager decided to stop working.

When I plug audio devices in, it no longer has a window pop up alerting me that I've plugged something in. After opening Realtek HD I saw that nothing plugged in was being detected, except for DIGITAL. Picture below is what I see.

In Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound, it says nothing is plugged in in both Playback and Recording except Realtek Digital Output. I can't set anything as default because it is greyed out.

I've tried restarting, reinstalling the drivers(via Device Manager), a system restore to when it was working, nothing has worked so far.
I'm running Windows 7.

Wondering what is wrong? Sound was working fine before I installed the card.

Hello Guys!  At my workplace we are experiencing with ALL  our x250's that the internal Realtek Sound Controller cant transfer sound to external devices, only picture.  In Device Manage -> System units, I can see that is detects the external input as "High Definition Audio-controller" but has a little warning triangle with an exclamation mark, and you cant select other speakers under sound (in the processbar) except from the build in speakers.  We have tried using all sorts of externalspeakers incl. mini-jack input, but nothing works.  Info:Model: Lenovo x250Win: Windows10 1803 build 17134.376Realtek High Definition Audio (controller) driver vers.    17 Apr 2018 (newest version for 1803)Connection: MiniDisplay-port  I really really hope someone in this forum can help with this problem, as it affect alot of colleagues not being able to play sound on our projectors.

Hello everyone, well, for the past few days now. I've been experiencing this issue of having no sound. On the lower-right corner of the system tray, there is a Speaker icon with a red circle with a white "x" on it. So naturally, I assumed that this must be due to the sound drivers corrupting. So I went to the manufacturer's website for my Notebook. Which is an Acer Aspire 4730Z running on Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

The drivers I downloaded were Realtek High Definition Audio, after the files finished downloading I reinstalled them, only to encounter yet another problem. Which was that they failed to install. The specific error message that appeared was "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure". So I tried to install it again, this time through the Device Manager by updating the driver software. This also, did not work, the error message for that was "This operation returned because the timeout period expired".

I've also tried the System File Checker tool, Microsoft Mr. Fix-It tool, the Check Disk utility, editing specific Registry entries in the Registry Editor, resetting the Services back to their defaults. Absolutely nothing has been successful so far. I've even attempted to reboot into Safe Mode, and install the software. Which surprisingly enough, worked. I rebooted my computer again for the changes to take effect, just when I had thought that I finally solved this annoying dilemma, restarting comput... Read more

I have an old Athlon xp 2800 running XP sp2. After expanding its memory I had some "blue screen" events... I did some "house keeping" and apparently everything is fine again.

However, Windows seems not to recognize any devices attached to the computer. This applies to printer, sound, USB ports and even the network card (despite I could make it work after the house keeping).

When I open the Device Manager, it shows a blank page, as if there were no hw devices on the computer. Also, I tried to force a hw detection but it simply does not work.

I ran chkdsk /f several times and nothing was found...

I am afraid some windows files got corrupted.

Can anyone help with this?

And now again not sure what happened but now when i connect my device to the usb device it dosen't detect i at all and also other devices. No sound of detection nothing.

What i tried so far ?

1. Disabled/Enabled all usb controllers in Device Manager > Universial Serial Bus Controllers.

2. Restarted pc didn't work so now i tried to shut down the pc also didn't solve it.

3. I found window hotfix should be also for windows 8 but when i tried to run it i got message error it's not for my window. I have windows 8.1 pro. This is the hotfix i tried: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2830154 not working.

Now i see another thing in the Device Manager i see yellow on: Unkown usb device, I tried to disable and uninstall it if i uninstall it it's gone. Tried to connect the device to the pc again nothing. Disable didnt work updating drive not working.
What else could make this problem ? I had the same problem few days ago so i shut down the pc and it was working again.
But now nothing help.

A:Windows stopped detecting usb devices how to solve it ?

Did you try deleting or uninstalling all the usb devices and rebooting? It is an old support trick to get Windows to reinstall the same driver. It seems to work as often as not.

If it does not work after that, at least for a short time, it may be a hardware issue.

I had just reinstalled Windows 7 professional on my laptop (dell latitude E6440) because of some issues. Well the reinstall went thru perfectly and had no problems. But now it won't connect to the Internet and won't let me make a connection. A box keeps coming up saying "not connected-no connections are available". Then when I click on the Internet and try to set up a new connection it comes up saying "Windows did not detect any networking hardware". This kinda sucks so I was wondering if anyone could help me out and figure out how to fix this.

I had a friend of mine build this PC for me a few days ago, its custom.

I have an ASUS ROG RAIDR Express PCIE SSD which I have it in UEFI mode where I was able to install Windows 7 successfully on it with my motherboard BIOS set to UEFI mode and CSM to UFEI as well. Hi There

I am quite techy so hopefully will be able to provide some help of my own to other members but this one has me stumped.

I have just built a new PC, and all is fine except the onboard sound

It is is a BIOSTAR N68S3B, with VIA HD 6 channel onboard sound.

The drivers did not install from the mobo driver disk so had to locate them myself. I have done this and sound is all working good.

When I boot though, windows brings up the add/remove hardware wizard as it is detecting a sound device that doesn't have drivers, in fact it does this 3 times. I have looked in device manager and sure enough the sound device is installed under the sound and game controllers heading, but under Other PCI devices there are 3 sound device showing with the yellow question marks.

I have tried to uninstall them, also ticked to never prompt to install again but each and every time I boot still the same.

Hope someone can help me with this, as I know it's only a little thing but it is bugging the life out of me.

I just installed windows 7 (clean). I did not have sound at first. After downloading the realtek drivers...the sound did start working by switching from stereo to 7.1 speaker (in the realtek HD audio manager) .....so the surround speakers work but the front left and right do not, and thats all i have (the front left and right). Also it sounds like an echo (almost like a sound effect) but there is no sound effect selected.

I did try disabling/re-enabling, switching the in/out-put around, restarting, and i did download all the driver packs.

Thanks so much if someone can help me, hope i explained it all ok. I also added 2 pics to this so you can see what i mean. =)

This first pic is when my sound does not work in the realtek manager, and the 2nd pic is when it does work (with an echo)

Hi i have a new MSI mobo H61M-P31(G3) that i used to replace a Dell mobo(unknown model) everything fit right and all drivers installed right but still have no sound. I'm not sure if this is due to a driver conflict because i did not reinstall windows or if it is a fault on the board. Yes i have tried everything from different speakers to different driver versions to no avail. I guess what i am asking is would this be a problem caused by the old windows install and should i reinstall windows.

A:New MSI mobo with realtek sound not working

TBH im surprised it worked without a reinstall, did you sysprep or prepare the OS for hardware migration ?
If not then its hard to say, chances are the wrong/no audio drivers are installed but it could also be something else
Have you checked device manager for any unrecognised devices/caution marks

Hey Fellow Technicians,

I'm having a weird problem.
I have a HP Pavillon A730n
It's a P4 3.0 Ghz

IT has an integrated Sound Card which I use ...

My problem:

I previously Installed Windows XP PRO SP2 over my Windows XP Home Edition that originally came with my PC... I do not have my Recovery CD's since my house burnt down and all my computer stuff is at a warehouse all I have is my PC...

Basicly when I boot ... I see 2 choices ....
1) Windows XP Pro
2) Windows XP Home Edition

Can't Format have important files I need to keep there for the moment ...

When I log in XP Home Ed I get sound ( That was my first partition )
When I log in XP Pro I have no more Sound ( Partition Created Afterwards )

All my drivers all ok except my sound card ...

Me Personally I tried all the drivers ... all the forums ... and I still can't figure it out ...

I personnaly think there could be a conflict between both operationg systems and that I have to do something to activate my ISC ( Integrated Sound Card ) To work.

Get it off XP Home Ed and put it on XP Pro

I'm about 90% sure this is a problem within the windows registery ...

Please If anyone of you ever had a similar problem let me know ...

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

My thought on this would be to get another HDD.
Set it as Primary, do a clean install of xp pro.
You should be able to sort out the sound drivers.
We have the latest here @ TS, (top of this page, dead center)
Once you have stable install, slave your original Hdd to gain access
to your files.

After reinstalling Windows XP on my computer, I have updated most of my drivers, and gotten all the service packs, but now my sound doesn't seem to be working.

I uninstalled and re-installed a few drivers which I thought would help, but I'm still getting the same error (Code 10). In the control panel, it says no sound device detected and I can't change the volume, and also I'm getting no little speaker thing in the bottom right of the screen where it usually shows it. Whenever I start a game, I get an error telling me that my sound device is in use by another application, but I have no other applications running, and in the Control Panel it says there is no sound device detected at all. I know that my speakers are plugging in properly, so what's wrong?

Any help is much appreciated, THANKS!

Also: I used to have XP Home Edition, but when I reinstalled I put on XP Pro instead. Don't know if this helps but I'm just putting it out there anyway.

Hi all,

Recently moved apartments, and as part of that I shut down and packed up my computer. Upon getting it set up at the new place, I found that 1) the rear panel audio was now displaying "Not plugged in" and not producing sound, 2) the front panel headphone jack was no longer working, and 3) I had numerous playback devices from AMD, presumably for the HDMI audio.

I've found several other threads online describing a similar problem, but I haven't been able to fix my issue.

I've tried a few basic troubleshooting things, in isolation as well as in combination:Confirmed the speakers worked
Uninstalling the Realtek High Definition Audio device from Device Manager without removing the driver
Uninstalling the Realtek device and removing the driver files
Installing the latest Realtek drivers
Installing the latest AMD drivers for my graphics card
System Restore to a known good date
Editing the registry to disable jack detection - this did allow me to set Speakers as default but didn't otherwise help

I'm completely out of ideas, and considering just buying a sound card, but I thought I ought to ask here first. Any information or suggestions would be very helpful, I've attached a DxDiag export. Thanks!

Dear all
hope someone can help as I'm really stuck. I'm the owner of a Packard Bell imedia 2770 which has a Asustek tiger capture device sound card. Works great under XP when I bought it however after installing Vista my headphones (plugged in the front) didn't work anymore. Also sometimes when starting up after hybernate no sound devices where recognized at all, so as a result no sound at all. As I wasn't able to fix it I reinstalled XP. Problem solved. A couple of weeks ago I installed Windows 7. The exact same problems appeared again starting with no headphones working. Now it's even worse. No sound devices recognized at all! Uninstalling the sound drivers and the restarting results in 4 HD Audio devices being installed and the original Asustek. Yet nothing works. Just shows a red cross near the speaker saying no speakers or headphones are plugged in. (see attachments)
Is installing a new soundcard my only solution?

The driver installed for Asustek is version from 5-8-2009. Can't find a newer one online.
Really appreciate any help. Windows 7 is a 64-bits version.

A:Sound not working in Win7: Realtek/Asustek tiger capture device

Have you tried manually updating the drivers? And there may be multiple versions of the "tiger" tuner, I found this one with a quick search: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-46495-2

But it only lists Vista drivers, not Win7. Vista drivers should work in Win7, but that is not always the case. In any event, as you are upgrading from XP to Win7, ensure you have ALL of the proper drivers installed for all of your hardware. And I wouldn't be surprised if HP doesn't have drivers for all of your hardware.

I cant get sound on one PC (the other one I can only because I'm using a Black Magic Intensity Pro as my sound card) but both pcs have this problem.
When I try to play music or open the volume control the pc says that I have no sound devices enabled and recommends I go to Add Hardware in the Control Panel. I have done this and the sound related devices are installed and working apparently.
I have the latest Realtek HD Audio Drivers, which came on my motherboard CD.

I have done a little bit of research and someone said that the sound card needs to be enabled in the BIOS but I cant find anything about it in my BIOS - all the wires/leads seem to be connected inside my PC.

Any help is much appreciated, this is driving me crazy.

Hi, about half a year ago my audio adapter started to stop working from time to time. The solution every time is to disable and, directly after, enable the Realtek HD Audio driver in the device manager. That time this happened maybe one time in 2 or 3 days. Today I have to go through this procedure a few times a day and it's becoming annoying... Do you guys have any idea maybe? Thank you in advance (T430s+Win7) /edit Maybe important could be the fact, that the audio adapter never at all stopped working as long as it's busy (making sound). If it would be possible, that it can stop working as long as it is making sound, I would have noticed for sure because I also use it for listening music, watching movies and even TV (I don't have another TV-receiver). Another detail, when it stopped working and I change the volume (audio symbol bottom right of screen, right next to date/time) I can't hear the ding-sound of course but also can't see the ding-sound (this green color jumping up this vertical volume bar that represents the sound which is made at the moment).

Ok, so quick summary of my PC.

Its a prebuilt HP pavilion a6720f

(The only thing that I've added in is the graphics card, but that shouldn't effect the audio)

Vista Home premium 64

Manufacturer: Pegatron
Motherboard Name: M2N78-LA
HP/Compaq motherboard name: Violet-GL8E

High Definition 8-channel audio
ALC 888S chipset

Just got the latest RealTek driver today.

It only recognizes when I have analog jacks plugged in. eg. Head phones, microphone, line out, rear out. I have A very nice speaker setup, thought a bit older, Cambridge soundworks dolby digital theater 5.1 speakers. Model number is CSW 3500. I've spent about two hours with HP tech support to no avail, not that they tried very hard. Finally the guy told me it was a hardware issue with my digital audio out and to send my computer in to be fixed, except, the digital out recognizes that I have an SPDIF cable plugged in, it just wont detect the speakers.

Am I missing something in the set up or are the speakers just too old?

Also, we were musing about getting a new sound card, would it be worth it to install a new sound card just in general? or is that going to mess with my headphone jacks on the front of the computer?

i googled and searched for this. but i can't find anything similar to my problem. sorry is this is a repeat.

my laptop is a few years old (behind the times)
make & model: Acer Aspire 4315-2490
using windows vista basic.

about a year and a half ago, 2 of my 3 usb ports stoped deteting ANYTHING. the 2 that don't work are on the right side of my laptop with the working one on the left. i plug a flash drive in and light on flash drive doesn't even come on. it's like my computer is acting like i'm not pluging in anything at all. i just did a system restore to factory settings last night. they still are not working.

Sorry, but it sounds as though you have a physical hardware problem. Without opening up the computer and doing advanced and expensive repairs, there is no way of fixing this. You will just have to live with 1 USB port. You could however buy yourself small USB splitter so you can have more than 1 USB device plugged in at once.

Sorry again,

Hey out there, I have tried everything from: microsoft support, forums, etc. but I cannot get my pc to detect my devices & names except for multi-printer, mouse, computer, keyboard, and a generic external hard drive without a (drive letter?) in the devices and printers catagory. When I hit computer catagory after start, it only shows: local disc (C:), and removable disc device, which is my desktop computer's internal DVD/CD player. HELP! Now more politely, I would love your help..

Thank you so much for your reply!!

I'm an oldie but a relatively computernewbe......

Have a look in Device Manager. If you see one or more yellow question-marks in the device list it means you need to install the drivers for the devices which currently don't work. The drivers can be downloaded from your PC or laptop maker's website if they support Windows 7 on your particular model.

I have an Asus M4A89TD pro / usb3 that has Realtek audio onboard. I have just finished my build and have never been able to get any sound from any of my IO ports. None of the ports recognize anything that I plug in (i only have 2 sets of 2.1 speakers, one uses a single light green jack and the other uses the light green jack and a black jack.) I DO get sound from some old usb headphones. The integrated Realtek audio does not detect any analog connection (tried with mic/speakers/headphones) in any of the jacks.

I removed the current drivers through uninstalling from device manager, rebooted, then installed the latest drivers from Asus, then Realtek directly. Additionally, I disconnected the front audio jacks from the motherboard in case that was causing a problem. Windows detects the audio device and there is no problems in device manager.

I've gone through every available option in the Realtek sound control options, but I'm at a loss. I have a USB headset that works without a problem, but I can't get these analog speakers to work. Any advice? The "set default device" is grayed out as an option for the speakers as well as saying they are "not plugged in".

I went through all the above several times with different drivers, uninstalled my graphics card (completely removed it from the motherboard during one setting), RMA'ed my motherboard, spoke to Asus support (who state it is a driver/software issue) to no avail over about a 3 week period. How c... Read more

A:realtek audio not detecting speakers or headphones.

Unplug all your inputs.
Plug in one device at a time.
If the Realtek software is functioning properly you should see a pop up after plugging in the green main speaker plug.

After confirming by pressing OK, you should get the following.

You should then plug in the black input and go through the confirmation process, again.

I have a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R that has had no problem for quite a long time using Windows 7 64 bit. Recently after a reboot, the integrated Realtek audio no longer detects any analog connection (tried with mic/speakers/headphones) in any of the jacks.

I removed the current drivers using add / remove, rebooted, then installed the latest drivers from Gigabyte, then I tried Realtek directly, and finally the default Windows audio drivers. I also tried removing the drivers with driver sweeper, directly from device manager, etc. and installing a fresh set of drivers. Additionally, I disconnected the front audio jacks from the motherboard in case that was causing a problem. Windows detects the sound card and there appears to be no problems in device manager.

I've gone through every available option in the Realtek sound control options, but I'm at a loss. I have a USB headset that works without a problem, but I can't get these darn analog speakers to work. Any advice? Before anyone says it, 'set default device' is grayed out as an option for the speakers.

Ive just recently switched from vista64 to windows 7 64.

The thing is that im using logitech X-540 5.1 speakers but realtek HD is detecting my "rear" speakers as "side" speakers when I select the 5.1 option. Same thing happened in vista too.

The only way round this to select the 7.1 option and disable the "side" speakers and hence I can use "rear". The sound from the "side" speakers then comes from the ones in the front in the testing.

Now the problem is that when I play games/movies in 5.1 it probably detects my system as a 7.1 and some sound will be missing.

So how can I use the 5.1 option and keep my surround speakers as "rear" and not "side".

Thanks in advance,

P.S. Buying a new soundcard isnt an option for me.

A:Realtek HD detecting rear speaker as side (5.1)

A true 5.1 speaker system consists of subwoofer, front right and left, and surround right and left (what you may be referring to as "side"). There are no "rear" speakers in a 5.1 system.

A 7.1 system adds rear right and left.

Your Realtek HD is configuring your 5.1 speaker system correctly.

See the Dolby Home Theater Speaker Guide for correct placement of your speakers.

Memory check is good and there are no beeps on POST. Any advice on possible causes or further checks would be greatly appreciated.

I've got an Acer Aspire S3-951, just installed Windows 8 Release Preview Build 8400.

All devices have installed, the bluetooth module shows up in the device manager. I've downloaded and installed the Atheros Bluetooth driver from the Acer website. However when I try to add a bluetooth device it doesn't find anything - it just says "Searching for devices" and eventually says "No devices found". I've placed two mice in pairing mode but neither show up (Logitech M555b and Kliq KL-TSMBT3), it doesn't even detect my iPhone.

Anyone got any ideas or fixes??
