I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey, recently, I've been having this problem:
Whenever I use websites that displays videos, namely youtube and watching series online, my screen just goes completely grey after loading the page. As in, the page would show up, then disappear to a screen of grey as shown:

As far as I recall, I haven't changed any settings or anything.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

A:How to get screensaver to kick in...now a grey blank screen

Welcome to the Seven Forums with your first post.

You have already tried Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization and clicked on the Screensaver Icon at the right towards the bottom.

I have no idea which Screensaver you want to run. However please redo the procedure in the para above and choose a different Screensaver from the Drop Down List, select the Wait Time that you want and if you think necessary configure the Settings.

Once done, have a look at the Saver by clicking the preview Button. Do you see the Saver or is it the earlier Blank Screen story?

Hey. First post on the site.
So I was attempting to boot windows 8.1 in safe mode through msconfig. When it booted up, it did everything normally and shows the window logo. However when windows finally pops up, it gives me a blank grey screen with the power button on the bottom right and the handicap button on the bottom left, with no available login to click and log into my account. So I'm unable to get into windows and change anything.
Thanks for any info.

A:Windows 8.1 boots up to blank grey screen

Hello and Welcome,
When you activated Safe Mode with Msconfig, it added a registry setting. You can change this setting in order to revert back to normal mode if it is there. See this post. If you have Windows 7 you can burn the Kaspersky Rescue Disk by double clicking the iso file without having to download Imgburn. In order for it to boot on your computer, you should disable Safeboot and Fastboot in BIOS if you can access it. Hopefully you can access BIOS. Then browse to the registry key using the Registry Editor of the Kaspersky Rescue Disk in the above link and change the Dvalue. Reboot.

Hi Guys!
I need help for my computer, I thank whoever takes time and afford to reply.
I have been using my computer over 8 years and suddenly display to  go off after running couple of minutes opening all the files. Suddenly screen goes blank. But the processor is running.  I can't shut it down using power button so I unplug power cable an turn it on with safe mode I did system scan, found and fixed this problem "CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" but problem still persist, screen goes blank and grey. I did the scan again and found no fault.

A:Screen goes blank to grey colour Windows 7

If all of your components are 8 years old I suspect that they are at the very end of their life cycle. Before things get too much worse be sure to back up everything in the way of data and documents you have to have. Then I would recommend an easy fix - a new computer.
If I were to guess about the weakest components they would be the power supply, graphics card, and possibly the monitor.

I run xp sp3. Ram is 512 mb. I also run Avast anti virus and malwarebytes. And I'm on dialup if that makes a difference.

About a month ago, so far only in ebay that I can find, when I would go to certain web pages it would come up as a blank page but say done at the bottom. I thought for awhile that it might be my antivirus protection(it had a firewall included in it). It was mcafee. And I read that mcafee and norton didn't really play nice with ebay. I've uninstalled mcafee and ran their uninstall tool. I also ran ccleaner just in case. I then downloaded avast. And I didn't really get the message at first or so I thought. Now I'm still getting the message. I also thought that maybe it was my ad blocker. I have adblock plus through firefox but when I checked that program wasn't blocking anything on that page. I know my java is up to date. Does anyone have any advice? Is there something I need to update? I'm all out of ideas. I've also tried in on internet explorer and I basically get the same response. Please help.

I also wanted to add that malwarebytes and avast never find anything bad on my computer.

I have Dell XPS 15, (L501x) laptop. I dropped it and then the screen turned off but the laptop was still on. I tired moving my mouse thinking that the screen would turn back on. Then I turned my laptop off by pressing the turn on/off button.
Then I turned my laptop on again and the login bit showed but the screen resolution was down and the screen but showed large (meaning the view was pixelated and the view was streched). The user name and the password entering text box was off screen and not visible. The OS then displayed a Finding solution error box or someting like that. After finding a solution it told me to restart by clicking the finish button. I clicked on finish and the screen went blank and the laptop didnt turn off so i forcefully turned it off by pressing the on/off button.

But my problem is that when I turned on my laptop again the dell's loading screen appears and the loading bar loads up full but then after that the screen went blank (its on but black) and doesnt show anything. After about 10/15 mins the Status: 0xc00000e9 error and said that windows has encountered a problem while connecting with a device connected to your computer.
The error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device ..... and so on.

Ok . i did a diagnostics test from Boot Options by pressing F12 and it showed me that there IS a error with my Hard Drive.

Error Code: 0142
Error Code: 2000-0142
Status: 79

Please help me over here. Thankyou.

A:Dell XPS 15 Blank Screen and error Status: 0xc00000e9

I suspect that the hard drive was damaged during the fall.
Try these free diagnostics to verify that:
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, you may want to try reseating the drive. To do this:
- unplug the AC Adapter and remove the battery
- open up the part of the case that covers the hard drive.
- remove the hard drive (there may be additional screws to remove, and then pull on a plastic tab to disconnect the drive).
- push the hard drive back in firmly.
- replace all screws, replace the battery and AC Adapter and try to boot.
- you may want to try Startup Repair also: Startup Repair

If that doesn't work (and if the hard drive test above fails), then you'll have to replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Most Dell's come with a Win7 installation disk. If you don't have that, then please contact Dell for a replacement: Order Recovery Discs (USA)

I am trying to setup OpenSSH on XP and near the end I am getting kind of lost. I will post the tutorial and what I need help with below.
Tutorial: http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html
8) important Pop a cygwin gwindow, harmonize Windows user information with cygwin, otherwise they cannot login
mkpasswd -cl > /etc/passwd
mkgroup --local > /etc/group

If your XP logs on to a domain, you most likely have to manually edit /etc/group. See this page.

If your XP logs on to a domain, you may want to edit /etc/passwd to replace /home/username by //unc_server/path_to_home
(thanks to Geoff Thomas)

mkpasswd creates a password file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
mkgroup creates a group file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
Thanks to John Skiggn of Cingular Wireless in Redmond, Washington for his tweak on domain user /etc/group

What was the last step on the tutorial that you did? Also, is the PC you're using in a domain?

If so or if not....how do I configure this thing? The information that I have found about it so far reads like stereo instructions in another language. I really need some help here!

The computer is now running very slow, it will randomly give me a Microsoft OS crash error, but then corrects itself. It flickers to a grey screen for a second, sometimes five minutes. Just yesterday, upon start up it took almost 10 mins to get to the log in screen, where it then jumped from my log in screen to the tablet display, and back and forth a bunch of times. I had no control over the laptop so i powered it down.

Today i took it off of the shelf and it is running.. some pages say to reinstall drivers, I am thinking it could be my video memory I dont really know what to do. Also, how do you clear your video memory.. it is starting to get on my nerves that there wasnt an easier way integrated as it seems to be neccisary for any gaming. (with the m15 anyways)

Hey guys. Consdiering I'm currently running 7, this may not be the most optimal place to drop a question, but I figure that the Realtek interface really hasn't changed too much over the years. When I'm configuring my surround sound, after setting the driver to a 5:1, I can see the interface that looks like a room with all the speakers shown that are apart of the 5:1 setup. Every speaker here is greyed out except for my left and right monitors, but they all seem to play the test tone along with the front speakers, but ONLY when they're greyed out. The L&R seem to work normally - playing the test when lit and not when greyed, but all other speakers only test tone through when they're greyed, which I would assume means they're deactivated - therefore, I am a confused man. Basically what I'm wondering is, considering I do want to take advantage of any surround capabilities possible, whether I leave them greyed and able to test tone or checked off to actually utilize my center, sides, etc.... this may end just being a very stupid question, but I guess I just assumed that if the test tone plays in its space then it will work in programs, am I wrong? Been curious about this one for a bit, any advice is mucho appreciated.

Running Win XP MCE SP2
Cable connection
motorola surboard modem
linksys router

A few weeks ago I installed openssh on my computer using http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/download/. I set up the group and passwd files, followed the instructions etc. Forwarded port 22 from my router to my computer and configured my firewall (zonealarm) to let traffic through. Everything worked fine until I screwed something up and had to format my hard drive. I've been trying to setup openssh the same way I did when it worked and I just can't get it to work. I've tried turning off the firewall and also connecting the modem directly to the computer, it just won't work. I have the user accounts setup with passwords. When i use putty to connect to my computer from that computer things work out but outside computers can't connect to it. I open putty, tell it to connect to my ip at port 22 using ssh and it brings up the connection window and asks me for a username, which I type in, and then it immiately asks for a password without showing the welcome/warning message it's supposed to show. When I type in the password, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then simply tells me "Access Denied".

Any suggestions? Any diagnostic tools or anything of that sort I can use to figure out what the problem is?

There are two related vulnerabilities in the challenge response handling code in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3. They may allow a remote intruder to execute arbitrary code as the user running sshd (often root). The first vulnerability affects OpenSSH versions 2.9.9 through 3.3 that have the challenge response option enabled and that use SKEY or BSD_AUTH authentication. The second vulnerability affects PAM modules using interactive keyboard authentication in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3, regardless of the challenge response option setting. Additionally, a number of other possible security problems have been corrected in OpenSSH version 3.4.

The CERT/CC has received confirmation that some copies of the source code for the OpenSSH package were modified by an intruder and contain a Trojan horse.

We strongly encourage sites which employ, redistribute, or mirror the OpenSSH package to immediately verify the integrity of their distribution.

An intruder operating from (or able to impersonate) the remote address specified in the malicious code can gain unauthorized remote access to any host which compiled a version of OpenSSH from this Trojan horse version of the source code. The level of access would be that of the user who compiled the source code.

I did a search, but didn't quite see anything posted that might relate to my problem.

At one point early last year I installed OpenSSH on an xp business box I have at home. I set it up so that it was an automatic server that would start when the box turned on. I used Putty on my laptop, and through port forwarding on my WRT54G v8 router, I had it all working perfectly and could connect using Putty on my laptop to have a tunnel to my home comp. Last week the hard drive died and I just bought a new one to put in it, and went through the process of re-installing XP. I then reinstalled OpenSSH, put in all the same settings as it had before (detailed notes from when I did it the first time) and fired up Putty and it wouldn't connect. I thought maybe it was the box, so I tinkered and tweeked to no avail. The only firewall I have running is the XP, and I added OpenSSH and it's ports to the firewall exceptions. The ports are forwarded correctly on my router, and everything in Putty looks ok. After still more timed out connections I opened the routers incoming log and noticed that there were no requests to the port I have OpenSSH set to. I thought that this was odd, as I also have PCAnyWhere installed, and it works perfectly, and I can see in the log the incoming requests for that. So now I am stumped. I have tried Putty on 3 different computers, using three different connections, and still nothing. Any ideas?

Hi folks,

today I setup Cygwin and OpenSSH on my rented server. I following the usual direction and everything seemed to be fine.

I tested locally using ssh localhost und voila - connection, login, everything fine.

Then I tried to login from my laptop and got no connection. I checked the firewall - and it was off. Both the server provider's firewall and the local windows firewall were off (I turned them on afterwards, however).

Ok, I thought, let's connect locally, so I tried ssh <hostname> and ssh <server-ip> (On the server itself!). Could not connect.

I tried a lot of combinations, changed the port, used ListenAddress to explicitly bind to the local ip, looked at hosts.allow and hosts.deny etc. Actually one can see slight differences with netstat -a, but the effect remains the same: Using localhost and I can connect, but not using the IP.

Server OS is Windows Web Server 2008.

Any ideas?

Thanks for hints or any idea how I can debug this. SSH debug mode shows no output, so it really seems no connection gets established.

I picked up a nasty virus or worm somewhere and seemingly cannot dislodge it. The symptoms are:

1. Two fake antivirus programs (XP Security 2011 and MS Tool Remover) constantly executed and attempted to scan.
2. All desktop icons have disappeared.
3. Start menu and taskbar are both visible, but all shortcuts on taskbar have disappeared.
4. Cannot right click desktop to access shortcut menu.
5. The desktop folder (accessed through explorer) changes attributes to hidden (as did all sub-folders).
6. All items in "Start -> All Programs" have disappeared.

Actions I've taken:
1. Un-hid the desktop folder and created a taskbar shortcut to the desktop so that I can see desktop items by launching the folder shortcut.
2. Download unhide.exe and un-hid Start menu items. However, many (most) of the items are still blank folders
3. Scanned computer several times in SafeMode with updated versions of Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, and STOPzilla--each of them has turned up different malware, which I removed. But the Desktop and Start menu issue persists and when I access the internet to find solutions the fake antivirus programs randomly return. When I rescan the computer using the three programs above, they keep finding other trojans that I have to remove. It's like this thing is laying eggs which mutate each successive generation.

I am running Windows XP SP1, and have a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU display adapter. I installed the latest nvidia drivers (61.77) and now everytime I right-click an AVI file, the screen suddenly goes blank for about a second or two, then reappears and I am able to access the right click menu options. The nvidia drivers also installed the "Play on My TV" shell extension, and when I made the mistake of clicking it, computer rebooted and added "KernelFaultCheck" to the startup menu.

And now that I think about it, whenever the computer starts up, after the Welcome screen, the screen also goes blank for a second before loading up the startup items and showing the desktop.

What should I do to fix this problem - is there a fault with the drivers, or the monitor?

Any help would be most appreciated.

A:Screen goes blank when I right-click AVI files

It appears to me that the new driver is the culprit. If your old driver worked fine go back to that. You aren't required to update your driver every time a new comes out. The new driver may have fixed some bugs that didn't even affect you but made your system unstable. My advice is to go back to your old driver. Hope that helps.

A security vulnerability found in a widely-used open-source software has been described as "the most serious bug."
A major vulnerability has been found and fixed in OpenSSH, an open-source remote connectivity tool using the Secure Shell protocol. The flaw was the result of an "experimental" feature that allows users to resume connections
According to a mailing list disclosing the flaw, a malicious server can trick an affected client to leak client memory, including a client's private user keys.
The affected code is enabled by default in OpenSSH client versions 5.4 to 7.1. The matching server code was never shipped, the mailing list said.
The flaw doesn't have a catchy name like some other previous flaws, but disabling client-side roaming support fixes the issue.
The flaw, which is said to be years old, was found by Qualys' security advisory team.
Wolfgang Kandek, chief technology officer at Qualys, confirmed in an email that the company disclosed the bugs to the OpenSSH team on January 11, and commended the team for working "incredibly fast" to get a patch out three days later.

"Developers and admins are advised to regenerate and rotate keys to systems they touch, whether for hobby [or] weekend projects, or more sensitive servers -- including Github," he added.
Bottom line? Patch now, and patch fast.

I've been running Vista 64 on a brand new machine for about 3 months now and all of a sudden the right mouse click menu is coming up blank.

You right click on something say in explorer and all you get is an outlined blank context menu.

Once you mouseover the menu items, the pop up and appear.. so you have to run your mouse up the entire menu once to see what's there.

This happens on the desktop, in explorer, mspaint, word, firefox's menus but not the browser window, and so on..

Any suggestions on what this might be?

I was having a problem with explorer.exe faulting/crashing everytime I right click on a shortcut (*.lnk) file with an Event ID of 1000 and citing ntdll.dll as the part of the error notice. I have since done a system restore and the issue seems to be fixed except now my right click menu on *.lnk files has an empty entry with an empty sub menu. Please see the attached. How can I remove this empty entry?

A:Solved: Blank entry in right click menu

Download, and install ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Open it. Click on Type column.
Right click, and Disable all non-Microsoft Context Menu types entries.
Restart computer, and see, if it helps.
If the blank entry is gone, try to enable non-Micro$oft entries one-by-one.

Win 8.1 install DVD created from Microsoft downloadable iso.

This DVD has already worked previously.

Enter language info, next screen basically a choice of install or repair, hit repair option with intention to reformat and new install, get blank blue screen nothing at all, now for about 20 minutes.

Similar if I try the install option, just sticks on "starting installation".

Do these options "have" to have a HDD with absolutely no errors before they will even bring up a menu. I thought they might at least have given the option to create brand new partition(s) and formatting, so losing any bad sectors.

After like forever, it offers me to 1) try to fix things 2) wipe everything and install afresh.

I choose 2)

Presumably the difference between that and the install option at the very start is that the install option at the very start doesn't offer repartition and reformat.

It has now been at

"Reset your PC
Please wait."

for about 20 minutes.

There doesn't seem to be much feed back / comfort progress info. It can help even if one only understand some of it.

Is this normal for it to sit for an age at each stage with no freed back?

Edit 2:

Now it says a required partition is missing. I guess it was checking for this. I read variously that the solution is to delete all partitions. Some say format the single partition. Others say just delete all partitions and leave as drive 0 unallocate... Read more

I'm using Windows XP Pro Service pack 3 for about 1 year. All of a sudden the right click menus are blank until I move the mouse, then I can see the items. This case also appears on the windows start menu, the taskbar, and google chrome. when i scan using virus removal tools, i got some virus, and already fixed it up. and this case happened after i restart my computer. Anyone can help?

A:Problem: Right click menu blank until i move my mouse

On the affected PC, check the display settings (Control Panel, Display,
Appearance tab). If the user has changed the colors for "selected" menu
items, it's possible to achieve the effect you describe. Try selecting
"Windows XP" for "Windows and Buttons" and "Default (blue)" for "Color
Scheme" - if this eliminates the problem, ask the user if he or she changed
the display colors.

A:IE gives me a blank page when I click to open a link in a new window..

1. Go to Start / Run
2. Then enter regsvr32 urlmon.dll
3. Click Ok when finished
4. If that single change does not resolve the problem, repeat the process by running regsrv32 with the following dll files.

* Shdocvw.dll
* Msjava.dll
* Actxprxy.dll
* Oleaut32.dll
* Mshtml.dll
* Browseui.dll
* Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

I recently visited the Microsoft Answer Forums as I could no longer access my favorites from Internet Explorer 8 (although they were still showing in My Favorites folder in my user account folder.) They diagnosed the problem as a corrupted user account and fixed it by directing me to the Microsoft link 'How to fix a corrupted user profile.' I created a new user account and copied the files over to the new account. This did fix the problem and I can now access all my favorites again in IE8.

However. I am now no longer able to send or receive messages in Windows Mail. When I click on 'Send & Receive' I get the box which says 'Some errors occured while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details.' However, the box below which is supposed to list the errors is completely blank. I have contacted my internet service provider (Virgin Media), who have carried out various diagnostic tests. They have told me that it is not a problem with their security, and they have checked my account settings to ensure everything is correct. They seem to think it might be a problem with my Registry. They have sent me several test messages (which arrive in my Virgin Media web mail box) but for some reasons are not getting downloaded to my Windows Mail. On a couple of occasions the test messages did get through (but only after I closed down Windows mail and then opened it again.) However, the Windows Mail stopped working again.
