HP Pavilion 17 f-028ca freezing during normal use.

Q: HP Pavilion 17 f-028ca freezing during normal use.

When I am casually using my laptop, it will freeze and if sound is playing, it will cause it to make a buzzing sound until I force shut down by holding the power button. Also, occasionally when I open it after it was in sleep, it would show me a black screen but I would be able to hear the fans working. What would I need to do to fix either of these issues?

Preferred Solution: HP Pavilion 17 f-028ca freezing during normal use.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

I have been having problems with my desktop for the past 4-5 months, have tried so much and looked on almost
every thread relating to lag and stuttering without finding a solution.

I have had the PC for nearly 3 years, built myself.

Specs:
CPU: Intel i7 7700k ( swaped to a celeron G3930)
GPU: Geoforce 1070 (taken out for testing)
Motherboard: MSI z270 pro carbon (swaped to an ASUS prime z270-P for testing)
Power supply: EVGA Supernova 850 W Gold G2
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz (tried individually)
Storage: Samsung 960 EVO M.2 (boot drive) and a Seagate BarraCuda

The problem occurs every 5-10 minutes with normal use, but every 20-30 seconds while playing games. This becomes more often for both the longer the computer is turned on for.

Things I have tried software wise:
-Clean install of windows 10
-Update/reinstall drivers for every component
-Change resolution and refresh rate of the monitor
-Disable prefetch and superfetch

There are no errors in event manager leading me to assume this problem is due to hardware. I have tried unplugging my GPU
and using my CPU's onboard graphics, the problem still occurs.

Screen recording of what the freezing looks like:

This problem 100% is not related to:
CPU
GPU
Motherboard
Loose cables
RAM

I have checked the PSU readings in the BIOS, there are no anomalous readings, everything looks very stable.
I have tested both my Storage devices and they show no e... Read more

A:Freezing and stuttering with normal use

You post that the problem is 100% not ram however I do not see where you tested the ram and what you used to test? Unless you use something like memtest and or prime95 [ram test] for a minimum of 1hr, then you really do not know if the problem is ram or not.

I have checked the PSU readings in the BIOS, there are no anomalous readingsClick to expand...

While this has some validity, it does not test under a load [which is where a pw supply would most likely have problems]
If you want to test a pw supply, you use the motherboard mfg's monitoring software while running prime95, OCCT, or IBT [intel burn test] If by chance your board mfg does not have monitoring software [which I know asus has] then you can use the intel extreme tuning utility. The intel utility will both monitor and do a stress test.

Ok, so this isn't your everyday freezing/lag issue. I can game run programs no Problem. This issue I'm experiencing is When I go to type something, weather a Document or just in the browser bar, I can start typing, then I it won't type, but then all of a sudden the stuff I was typing, appears. It's almost as if the hard drive stopped spinning for a split second. The funny thing is I am running a Samsung Evo 1TB SSD drive and not a roundy....The roundy one, just stores my Data and Docs. My SSD has everything else, programs/Games.

I know you can't do a Chkdsk on an SSD...but wondering if anyone else has a similar issue with an SSD.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

For about a week now, my computer has been very slow on start up in normal mode and will freeze constantly during use, the only remedy being to just leave the computer alone for a half hour before it unfreezes. I've updated and performed full scans using SUPERAntiSpyware along with Malewarebytes Anti-Malware several times (and ten minutes ago) without any dangerous files being detected.

I have windows 7 and I'm currently running in safe mode with networking, though it appears that I cannot install/uninstall programs?

Any help is much appreciated, if this is malware I would like to quickly fix it before my computer becomes unusable.

HelloThis infection changes settings on your computer so that when you launch an executable, a file ending with .exe, it will instead launch the infection rather than the desired program. To fix this we must first download a Registry file that will fix these changes. From a clean computer, please download the following file and save it to a removable media such as a CD/DVD, external Drive, or USB flash drive.FixNCR.reginsert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it. You should now see the FixNCR.reg file that you had downloaded onto it. Hey, I recived my laptop a little over a week ago, and ever since I've been using it, the applications/laptop will freeze for a period of time.  Sometimes recoveing and moveing on, other times I have no choice but to force shut down the laptop. There are times when it will freeze, and only 1 app is frozen, but the sound is running, or I can do other things while it works itself out.  When this happens, sometimes I can open task manager, othertimes, nothing happend.  Then even if I manage to open the task manager, I can NOT shut the frozen aplication down.  Either the freezing workse itself out, and then it closes down like normal/should when telling it to close this way, or the computer eventually locks up compleetly. I did remove Macafee, and after reading some, used the total removal program from their site.  However, this has not fixed my issue.  My game still froze, forcing me to restart, and after restarting my web browser still froze for about a minute while trying to get here to make this post.  What if anything can I do to find out what is causing this problem?  I have tried updating my drivers from Lenovo, this hasn't helped.  I thought about using the diagnosics tool from Lenovo, but those do not seem to usable by the IdeaPad series.

Hi Jinotad,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to inform you that the computer is not working as expected and freezing during normal operations, issue is same even after removing the McAfee Antivirus from the Y510P.

Performing OSRI (Operating System Re-Install) should resolve the issue, OSRI can be performed by clicking on NOVO button refer page no. 16 in the User Guide to perform OKR (One Key Recovery).

NOTE: Please backup the data before performing OKR as the computer will be re-installed to its factory settings.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

Computer Specs:

MSI K9MM-V (Motherboard)
AMD Athlon X2 64 Dual Core 6400+
Saphire x1950 pro 512 MB (AGP)
2 GB G-skill DD2 400
Creative X-fi
Western Digital 320gb SATA
Maxtor 100gb SATA (Not raided)
APEVIA 500w PSU

When the computer crashes, there are no artifacts or any video distortion. The screen simply stays on the same frame that it was on when it crashed. The sound loops for about 10 seconds and then stops. The only way to fix it is to hold down the power button until it's off.

I have run memtest86, but the ram is perfectly fine according to the tests.

I have removed the X-Fi card, but the freezing still persisted.

The video card was tested in another computer and works 100 percent.

I have reinstalled windows XP twice; still crashes.

If I am not mistaken, it is either a faulty MOBO or PSU. I have no problem with buying a new one of these.

What do you guys think?

Im new here so im sorry if this isn?t the correct place to post this.

So lately this is what?s been happening, everytime i boot in normal mode i wait for the progams and things to load up but everything seems so slow and after some minutes after i click on something to do anything the pc simply freezes, no Blue screen of death. It just freezes and i can?t control the cursor anymore,

I?ve tried waiting for like 30 minutes but it just stays there forever, only solution is to switch off the laptop on the button.

Im writing this in safe mode with networking and that?s how i have been able to use my laptop lately(in safe mode) because like i said before, it just won?t work right on normal mode.

I runned sfc/scannow and it said that no violations were detected, but for some reason i can?t open the CBS.log file to show to you, i typed findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt in the cmd but it won?t open the file, im not sure if im doing it the right way.

I would like you too tell me what information you need because im new here and im not sure, i have my system specs info in my profile if you need.

Thank?s in advance.

Hey there,

I've tried all the normal things - online troubleshooting through Dell and Windows (running 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium), plus updating drivers, uninstall/reinstall device, checking through media software settings (VLC, iTunes) - and cannot seem to figure out why my LEFT speaker is playing at what sounds like 10-20%, versus the RIGHT one playing at 100%. No major update or change predated this issue. Simple Windows Update stuff, but I purposely don't let Windows touch my "manufacter" drivers etc.

Anyone with a clue as to what else I can try?

THANKS!

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if you guys could help me on this weird issue that started happening recently with my new system. As from the title, when gaming (so far every game... oblivion, COD2, Fable, Rise of nations, etc) after a while, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes half an hour, the game will freeze, the sound will loop and do a feedback sort of thing then start playing again, usually the performance is downgraded slightly. Rebooting doesn't seem to help much...

I'm not overclocking at all, nor have I been, plus I have never seen the nvidia notificiation for heat so i'm not sure its the video card (drivers 84.21). The soundblaster audio card is rather old, but using the drivers off the creative site. Haven't had problems like this before.

Any suggestions?

I have been spending the last 12 hours reviewing threads in this forum for solution to my issue with no luck. Start-up Repair has been run-all routines successful. System restore cannot locate any restore points, I have been unable to open explorer to download malwarebytes. sfc scannow completed verification phase but I am not sure if there are other phases beyond that that need to be done as well. I was able to run chkdsk and hardware diagnostics - no issues found.

Hardware related is my battery. I has lost it ability to charge. Could this be the source of my problem?

BTW when I start in mode the Windows Help and Support Window pops up for no reason but then freezes...weird. When I close it I get very limited functionality (windows explorer will open) and everything moves at a glacial pace.

Hi, my computer will always randomly freeze for 1-3 seconds when I do normal tasks (like using chrome and skype). The freezes cause audio and mouse to also freeze during that time.

I tried to swap CPUs, get a new mobo, use different RAM and nothing works. I've got this problem since Windows 8. But its been progressively worse. Now I also sometimes have problems POSTing and the display will turn black when I boot up to the login screen.

I used latencymon to check which drivers are causing the problem and when I disable my GPU drivers the stuttering is gone. I don't have any of these problems when using DirectX apps. My GTX 660 has the latest drivers installed.

I posted some more info into this issue with LatencyMon. It looks like it has something to do with dxgkrnl.sys and Wdf01000.sys. They both have the highest DPC and ISR counts. Not sure what to do cause i cant reinstall DirectX.

For a couple months my computer has been extremely slow to do anything 70% of the time, including simple things like open a folder, play an mp3, open control panel, etc. It has occasionally had periods (several days in a row) where it will run really loud for 5 seconds before shutting down and restarting on its own. Hi guys, I was wondering if anybody could assist me with this problem on my PC, I've been trying to fix it now for nearly two months and I have no specific idea of what's causing it.

It started two months ago, and the basic description of it would be that mid task (internet browsing, opening one of my audio applications etc) it just seems to freeze up. The mouse cursor can still be moved, but the window I am currently using turns white. I can click other windows but then they will freeze too. Whilst this is happening, my HDD light on my system is constantly illuminated. I've managed to view Resource Manager whilst it happens and it looks like my HDD Activity goes through the roof at this point. Anywhere from five seconds to five minutes later, everything returns to normal, and anything I've started during the 'freeze' will open up. I've noticed I can also hear my hard drive start working a second or two before it comes back to life.

I've defragged, ran CHKDSK on my drives, ran Seagate diagnostic tools, and no errors have come up. I've ran various Malware and Virus programs, and the system is clean.

I thought it may be down to RAM (I have 4GB, 2 x 800Mhz DDR2 and 2 x 1066Mhz DDR2) as I have mixed speeds (although both clock in at 800Mhz), so took out the 1066 sticks. This didn't change anything. I played with the BIOS settings for the RAM, changing the voltage to factory specified and the latencies, but no result. I've ran Memtest and received no errors or problems.

For some reason, my computer:

Compaq Presario S6900NX
AMD Athalon 64 3200
160 GB 7200 RPM Ultra DMA Hard Drive
1 GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory
GeForce FX 5500 256 MB RAM

which ran EQ2 just fine for a couple years, has started freezing up for about 5 seconds every 5-10 minutes and then it jolts back into the game as if nothing happened. I have no idea why.

The other symtom is that the sound will continue to play while the screen freezes, and then right before it jolts back into the game, the music skips really fast like a skipping CD, and then it's all normal after it jolts back.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

so, i turn off my computer last night. wake up, and it wont boot up.

this is the first time in months that i've had it off for a whole night.

so i try to boot up, it gets stuck at the loading screen. restart, same thing. since my processor is overclocked, i downclocked it to see if that could be doing it. still nothing.

try safe mode, boots fine.

so i try a system restore, still nothing when i try to boot up normally.

i was thinking about doing a repair with the install cd. but i think i've lost my cd key. its not with my disk, and im not sure where it could be.

is there anything i could do/check?

Hello,
This is my second time posting on these forums. I had great help last time for my problem and really appreciated it. Now i'm back with another malware, i tried to fix it myself with no avail.

My current problem has to do with "System Security." I think i got it while browsing a web site from a pop-up, i thought i had avoided it, but then System Security kept popping up, scanning my computer and saying i was infected with "Lsas.Blaster.Keyloger." My desktop background was also changed to a black and red wallpaper saying something about my computer being infected and that i need to fix it.

I tried fixing the problem by scanning with ad-aware and registry booster, i used both in safety mode because every time i start the computer in normal mode it either freezes or restarts moments after it starts loading up the desktop. In safety mode i also deleted:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\13998594.exe

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\13998594

as well as the system security folder(s)

I checked:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
for
13998594
but i didnt find it in there nor any other weird sequences of numbers.

So now, I am stuck with no idea what to do next because:
1) I can't start my computer in normal mode.
2) I can't run Malware bytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and ComboFix in Safety Mode.

As of now, my computer is still freezing up or restarting as soon as it starts up in nor... Read more

I have been having issues for the system freezing up at random times since I bought this computer.. It will sometimes run for hours with no problems and others will freeze up within minutes of being used. all we do with this computer is surf the web and stream music. It never freezes up on any particular site or during any particular time. I have tried to have it looked at and it never seems to get better always the same problem.  After reading up on the web this seems to be a common problem for this computer from HP. Can you please tell me how tro resolve this? I have tried to reset it back to the original time and different dates but because this has been a problem from the start it does not change anything! Mike Wand

Please help!

My computer has started to crash in the last 2 weeks, and in fact in the last few days it has gotten terrible. I am even having trouble booting up now, and decided I needed some expert advise before I made something worse.

I first noticed the trouble a few weeks ago whilst browsing the internet. The computer just froze and I manually switched it off since I couldn?t even access the task manager. I?ve owned the computer from new since July 2004 and have had very few problems with it.

From browsing the message boards I notice that there?s certain info needed in order to render an opinion on these things, so here goes:

Motherboard Make & Model: Hewlett Packard Pavilion zv5000

CPU Make and Model: Intel Celeron, 2800 mhz (28x100)

Hard Drive make and model: Toshiba MK4025GAS (40Gb, 42000RPM, Ultra-ATA/100)

RAM: 2x256mb

Graphics Card Make and Model: ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP (RS300M)

Soundcard make and model: SoundMax Digital Audio

Operating system& version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Description of problem:

The computer freezes (this has been whilst browsing the internet, playing dvd?s, and most recently whilst running a Windows program that was supposed to locate any disk errors on the hard drive) and then eventually switches to a blue screen with a long error message. The following is one message that I have seen several times:

Good job on providing those details, here's another thing I'd want to know before venturing a guess. What does the event viewer say?

Its in the control panels, administrative tools, computer management, event viewer under system tools. Check out the application, security, and system logs. Post back with any errors that occured around the time of the freezes.

Hello,

I have a HP Pavilion laptop, out of warranty and I don't have the discs.

2 days ago I installed norton antivirus and ran a full scan. It said 1 issue found, then switched itself off. Since then it freezes as soon as I turn it on, on the Hp screen with the little circle.

I have tried switching on and pressing escape which gives me 5 options, F1 system info, F2 system diagnostics, F9 boot device options, f10 bios setup, F11 system recovery. I have run diagnostic tests and found hard drive short dst failure (qcxf7k-71d856-mfpwxa-60tm03) System recovery will not work

I would like to restore to an earlier date prior to installing norton but can't seem to do that from this screen, there is no F8 available. Any suggestions? Do I need a new hard drive? Thank you

Last night turned on to find it saying it was installing updates. Since then when turned on freezes but won't let me open or fix anything. Keep having to turn it off and on. No joy. Sometimes opens a blue screen. Message reads 'windows hasn't loaded correctly'. Option to reset won't work as says I need additional free space on the drive but can't open drive to do so. Start up repair can't diagnose a problem. Won't let me perform a system restore and won't let me create a restore point. Don't have a disc to use. Cannot open files or access internet on desktop. Completely stuck. Please help.

Hello

So in the last few days, my laptop has been freezing pretty bad. Ctrl Alt Delete doesn't bring up task manager or anything. I have let it sit for awhile to see if it comes out but no such luck. It will freeze at any moment, whether it is sitting on the desktop or running chrome, there doesn't seem to be anything that causes it. I thought it may be a virus but avast didn't find anything so I ran a factory restore thinking that might help but it didn't.

Anyways any help would be great

Thanks

Jake

The operating system is windows 8.1, I'm unsure of the bit size. The first thing that happened was the screen kept going black, I sent it off and it got fix, was never told what was wrong with it. A few months later it started to freeze up after being on it for a few minutes, I can shut it down and restart it and it does the same thing.

Hey guys, I'm having problems with my HP Pavilion freezing up, and I'm not sure what's wrong with it.
At first I thought it might be my audio driver(because after about 10 or so minutes of listening to music via my computer, it would freeze), so I went to the HP website and downloaded an audio driver update for the Windows XP operating system. I restarted the computer, and opened the 5 main windows and websites that I go to(in the IE web browser): www.kongregate.com; www.facebook.com; www.youtube.com; www.yahoo.com; and the accessorie Paint. After about 30 minutes, it froze once again.

My friend said it might be my web browser, but I have no way of downloading another web browser to see, because my Grandmother won't let me download another browser. Now, I don't know if this will help, but I thought describing the way it freezes would.
Whenever it freezes, it makes a strange beep noise, then these weird lines appear over words and such. (It's kind of hard to explain, all I can really say is something weird goes on with the appearence of everything) my mouse will not move, and Ctrl+Alt+Dlt does not work. I end up having to hold the power button on the computer down, and force shut down.

Everytime this happens I have to restart my laptop nothing else helps... and when I turn it on I don't get any error message whatsoever. Occasionally i get this "blue screen" thing.  It says: "Stop code: DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE"  P.S Sorry for bad english

This laptop running win7 was working fine, the kid deleted some file then it immediately it froze, after that he manually powered down then restarted, it went to the net then shortly after it froze again. Upon restarting it froze on the windows logo, after restarting it it froze again at the windows logo but this time the screen went black. Upon restarting this time it showed Startup repair as an option so I chose that and it gave the system restore option which I chose.
After it restarted and went back to windows, same deal as mentioned above but what was different this time, suspecting virus issue, installed Mbam but when mban was opening up looks like Avast blocked it and froze, this happened 2 times so after going through the system restore process again, this time I uninstalled Avast and the system restarted but got stuck on windows logo. Seems like this unit is going through the same processes in sequence? Any ideas guys?

I recently just purchased a HP Pavilion x360 11-k101na and on the first day of using it, it restarted by itself twice due to some sort of problem, and it froze once and I couldn't get it to work. I had to hold down to power button to shut it down which I hate doing and upon turning it back on, it just wouldn't. This is only the first day of usage and I'm afriad something is wrong with it. Just wondering if anyone else had these problems or how they can be fixed, or what's even causing them?

If it is brand new and doing this I would call HP Warranty or better yet take it back to where you bought it if you have that option. It is rare, but not impossible to get a laptop with a bad hard drive right out of the box. This will just continue to cause troubles for you.

I somewhat recently purchased the above-mentioned laptop (several months ago). It has been great, running quickly, smoothly. But, recently, out-of-the-blue, it has begun to freeze.

A few days ago, it started to freeze for about 2 seconds, then stutter through a second, before freezing for another 2 seconds etc...etc...During these instances of freezing everything would stop, from sound to the cursor.

The problem has been getting progressively worse, and now my laptop will not boot Windows. It will just sit on the loading screen for half an hour.

Before it came to this point, I ran virus/spyware scans and found nothing. I tried a system recovery to a more recent time, but now it has stopped working altogether. Any suggestions?

My HP laptop is freezing up and nothing works... mouse, keyboard, or anything plugged into it via USB (external mouse/keyboard). This usually occurs 10-20 minutes after the system boots up and the only thing to do is hold down the power button until it is off then restart and repeat. This is very frustrating and I have found no pattern to the events causing this to occur. I have tried a hard reset, changing the RAM, and Advanced power option settings. I tried running the system test under the F2 option and most tests passed but the system froze and never completed the last test.

I read in another forum where another person with an HP dv6 had similar issues and the fix was to remove the battery and use only AC power. My particular laptop requires that the battery be inserted to be turned on.

Help Help Help this is way past frustrating.

Hi, I'm trying to help my mother with her laptop. The laptop stops under boot, with this screen: It freezes and no matter how long I let it run, it wont boot. I have tried these things:*Harddrive test passed (also runned DFT, passed)*Memory test passed (also runned memtest, passed)*Component test passed*Restart several times, with no power and holding the power button 15 sec*Restored Windows with keeping all files but deleting programs/apps. Worked 1 boot, then it booted right into this.*Tried with only one and one memory inserted.*Tried different boot settings (secure boot enabled/disabled, legacy boot enabled/disabled)  Tho it will boot in secure mode. I have not flashed the bios yet, should I try that? Any other suggestions how to fix this? I might want to try to load Win7 into it....

Hello, I am at my wits end regarding this issue.  I am having to restart my computer over and over because it keeps freezing on me.  I'm running Windows 10 (64-bit) and it was upgraded to the Anniversary version. It also has all of the current updates which would include the fix that supposedly stopped the freezing issue for many users. I have looked up all kinds of fixes and have had no luck.  I have gotten rid of the option to fast boot, I have deleted devices. I have deleted and reinstalled drivers. Nothing helps. This was not a problem until that stupid update and now I can't get it to go away.  I had attempted to rollback to an older version and it wouldn't let me do so.  I ended up backing up all of my documents and doing a completely fresh install after formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch.  Every time that it freezes I have to restart it using the power button.  On top of that every other time I restart it, the wifi connection comes up with a red-x and tells me that I don't have a ethernet cable connected (as it is showing as my only means of connecting). Thus I have to restart it again for that reason. At this point I'm not even sure where to start with anything else and I'm super frustrated (had to post this from my desktop). Can anyone give me any assistance in figuring out this problem? Thanks  in advance!

I purchased a HP Pavilion a6110n PC (I have a touch more information in the computer stats) last August...it has been working quite nicely until recently.

I am a graphics editor working with CS2 and a photographer shooting with RAW, so my first thought was that I was running out of memory. However, when I looked under my "computer," my hard drives are as follows: HP ( C: ) 225 GB free of 289 GB and HP ( D: ) 1.00 GB free of 8.78 GB.

It has been:

Slow, dreadfully slow...something that would ordinarily take 20 seconds will come up as "20 minutes remaining," and then drop down to "14 minute, 2 minutes, 45 seconds, etc.," usually taking an actual minute and 30 seconds to complete the task (i.e. transferring two pictures from one file to another)

Freezing, quite often. It started out only freezing when I had lots going on, like CS2, iTunes, three internet explorers and several documents all at once. Lately it has started freezing when only two programs are open. Small things, like opening two new pages in quick succession throw it into a frenzy that typically results in a freeze.

I have Norton 360 installed, and it seems quite happy with its perky little green checkmark, but I do think I have a virus. If it seems not, what is it? How can I get my computer back? If it is [a virus], how can I get rid of it? How do I prevent it from happening again? How can I protect my content? As a writer and photographer, my career is on this computer. I'm ... Read more

Hi all,

I know there are threads like this posted already but I am having problems with my HP Pavilion DV6-1120sa 3GB RAM Windows 7 laptop (Upgraded from pre-installed Vista with clean install).

Two days ago, Sophos Endpoint found a Memory trojan virus but gave no option to Quarantine/Remove or seek help of any kind. I got two BSOD in the space of 10-15 minutes not long after this and decided to reinstall two night's ago to be safe.

Problem is, after formatting and reinstalling Windows 7 with the Windows 7 disc the desktop would freeze up and I'd need to shut down, this happened 10-20 times so far since reinstalling and no sooner did it start, it happens with the BIOS as well when trying to access settings.
Either the laptop shuts down without warning or freezes and then several seconds later shuts down both in the BIOS and logged in. My laptop no longer restarts as it tries to start up and shuts down before or during POST.

What I have checked since reinstallation:

-sfc /scannow: found corrupt files and repaired them.

-Memory Test when I got into Startup Menu: laptop froze and shut down seconds later.

-Windows Memory Diagnostic: froze and shut down.

-Check Disk: 100% completed and found no errors.

-MemTest86+ through Ubuntu Live CD: ran for 1-3 minutes before freezing and shutting down.

-Reseated both 1gb and 2gb memory sticks

-removed both sticks and ran MemTest86+ on each: 1gb and 2gb individually tested in both Memory Slots. Again laptop froze and... Read more

You may still have some sort of infection lingering on the hard disk that didn't get cleaned off. If you decide to format again make sure you do a diskpart clean all first. Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Are you running off battery or power adapter when these crashes occur?
Have you tried using different RAM?
