x230 not using USB 3.0 with DisplayLink

Q: x230 not using USB 3.0 with DisplayLink

Hello, hopefully someone can help with this, since the issue persists. I am using the USB 3.0 Ultradock, but the 3.0 docks on the x230 are not working properly. Do I need to delete the generic USB 2.0 hubs? As a sysadmin, I know better, but I am so incredibly angry that Lenovo can't address such a simple issue that I'm willing to try anything at this point. Next step, of course, is to find a bloatware-free laptop that doesn't require 3 different update wizards (Windows, Lenovo, OEM) to operate, but since it's 2017 that may well be impossible so I'd better solve this problem (again) while I'm searching. My x230 is using the default Windows drivers (dated 2006) and the generic USB 2.1 hub.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

In our school district we are having issues using the displaylink adapter with Windows 10 and a smartboard attached.  When the monitor goes blank after a 1hour (policy) of no use the display will not come back on, however if I disconnect the HP USB adapter the display comes back.  I have updated the BIOS, Video Driver, and have tried the two newest drivers on the displaylink site but still an issue, any one experiencing this issue or suggestions on how to fix?  Thanks.

I have a Surface Pro 3 i5/4300U with two mDP monitors, one plugged in directly and one plugged in to the dock and then I have a USB adapter using DisplayLink with an adapter converting it to DiV connector. This setup has worked just fine for a long time. It also worked fine after the upgrade to Windows 10. But the other day there was an upgrade installed and now I can only get two external monitors to work at the same time. Either both the mDP monitors ore one mDP and the USB connected monitor.

I have tried rolling back, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. But I'm stuck with using two of three external monitors. Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so, did you find any solution?

I had this with my usb Mimo um-740. I just unplugged the usb connector in the computer, put it back and the monitor came back to life.

We have about 8 of the R7-572 machines, several other laptops, and about 15 (Targus) DisplayLink port replicators floating around.  Everything works fine, except when I try to upgrade an R7 to Windows 10.  Windows auto-installs the Targus / DisplayLink software and almost everything works:  USB devices, analog audio, and ethernet.  What fails is the video portion, there are no additional monitors available. When I connect the USB cord the audio and ethernet devices appear in the Device Manager, but the USB Display Adapter appears for about 2 seconds then disappears again. On Windows 8.1 everything was working fine, then with either an In Place Upgrade or a clean install, the behavior is the same. This is not a Windows 10 issue:  other laptops on 10, including my Acer V 15 Nitro and an older TravelMate P253, work fine.  It is not faulty port replicator hardware, all other laptops work fine and these laptops work fine when on Windows 8.1.I am open to ideas, so anyone that has worked with these things please speak up.

Which Targus do you have ? I have both a Targus ACP70USZ  and a Mediasonic HV1-U24D2L-W pushing dual 1920X1080 monitors. All machines are running Windows 10 and currently the R3 (currently on the dock) using Displaylink 7.9.1488.0 driver. If not working I'd suggest downloading the latest version from Targus (7.9 or later), completely uninstall your current version, reboot, then reinstall the package. If that does not work and is with specific docks, then contact Targus. They had a problen a year or two ago and replaced my first dock.

I think I am having a problem that was solved in an old thread, but it was locked without giving details on how to actually do the fix. Started having problems when my computer monitor died and I replaced it with a small flat screen TV using ONLY the computer to monitor cable, not an HDMI cord. Setting the screen resolution to the recommended setting made the desktop too big for the screen. Setting the resolution to fit it made some of my games run in a small box rather than full screen. And of course there was no sound.

A few days later I hook the monitor up with the HDMI cable, but don't remove the monitor to computer cable. Think leaving the cable was a HUGE mistake, now. Sound works, still have screen problems.

Haven't updated anything for some time, so I update everything. Windows, drivers, EVERYTHING!

Now my games won't even load, dxdiag crashes before it can load, and I still have resolution problems.

The previous thread didn't give enough details on HOW to do the fix for a computer dummy like me...lol Here is what she did to fix it:

"I found the issue. I use two DisplayLink USB to VGA adapters to have additional monitors. After uninstalling those drivers dxdiag no longer crashed. Then, after reinstalling newer DisplayLink drivers, everything is working great."

I suspect having both cables hooked up at same time to run my monitor when updating the drivers gave me the duel drivers just as they had.

I should add I found the original thread by searching an error message I was getting. Here is the message:

Click yes and it doesn't read much info on the "Display" tabs. Click no and it crashes.

All right folks, here is the answer.  When I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10, if I selected the 'wipe the drive and install fresh' option everything worked fine.  If I selected the 'keep my stuff' option the DisplayLink failed. Ultimately it turned out that the previously installed DisplayLink software remained installed while a new version also installed with Windows 10. The solution:Disconnect the docking stationUninstall the DisplayLink softwareRebootRun the DisplayLink cleanup tool "DisplayLink Installation Cleaner 8.0.453" that was provided to me by a Targus engineer (not sure if this is readily available from either the Targus or DisplayLink site)RebootInstall DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Windows 8.0 M0.exe from DisplayLink's web siteWhen prompted connect the docking stationVoila!

Hi,

I’ve just received a Dell XPS13 which I’ve just reinstalled Windows10 and updated the Dell drivers - esp the Dell Displaylink DA100 which I use to plug in to the network cable for Fog imaging.
Irregardless of what I’ve done, when I boot the Dell laptop into Bios I do not see the network boot option in this Dell laptop , like I did for my lenovo laptops and desktops. There’s only 2 boot sequence options: Windows Boot and UEFI Samsung SSD PM851 M2.2280 256GB.

Has someone had a similar issue, appreciate some suggestions how to network boot this machine ?

Even when I remove the DisplayLink monitor and stop the DisplayLink service, I can't enable Aero.

When I run Windows' Aero troubleshooting report, it tells me color depth is set too low:

Color depth is set too low: Not fixed

To render Aero effects, the color depth must be set to 32 bits.

Depth: 32 bits
Required depth: 32 bits
Depth: 32 bits
Required depth: 32 bits
Depth: 8 bits
Required depth: 32 bits Click to expand...

What's confounding about this is that my DisplayLink monitor is set to 32-bit when it's on, and when it's off it still lists that extra 8-bit monitor.

The troubleshooter also tells me the Desktop Window Manager service is disabled regardless of whether or not it actually is disabled.

I have two monitors outputting from my computer normally. I have two ATI Radeon HD 4850 cards (CrossFire). This DisplayLink monitor is a 7" sub-monitor. My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The DisplayLink drivers are supposed to support Aero... they've supported it since 5.0 IIRC (they're on 5.6 now).

Help is greatly appreciated!!

UPDATE: Uninstalled DisplayLink and restarted. Still no Aero. Troubleshooter still gives same reasons.

If I remove the DisplayLink driver I get all the settings back.

Is it possible to resolve this conflict and to get the Nvidia Control Panel to retain all the setting/configuration menu items?

I have tried two different DisplayLink-driven USB 3.0 Docking Stations with my Yoga 700, and neither of them can achieve Gigabit Ethernet speeds. The docks I've tried are the Besthing USB 3.0 Docking Station, and the Sabrent USB 3.0 Docking Station, both of which use DisplayLink as driver software, and both feature Gigabit Ethernet ports. I have 1Gbps WAN access from Comcast, and if I use a plain Gigabit-to-USB adapter plugged into the Yoga, I get expected speeds in the neighborhood of 950Mbps. However, if I connect through one of the DisplayLink docking stations, my speed immediately drops to about 100Mbps. This leads me to believe that there is an issue with DisplayLink or their drivers, which is why I bought a second docking station to troubleshoot, but so far DisplayLink Support has been unable to provide a solution, and are shifting the blame to the dock manufacturers. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the DisplayLink driver software several times, including trying the latest Beta versions, and have tried plugging the Docking Stations in to both of the Yoga 700's USB 3 ports, with the same results. Has anyone had any luck getting Gigabit speeds when connecting a Yoga to a DisplayLink-enabled USB 3.0 Docking Station? Are there any other troubleshooting steps I can take? Thanks,R

We've been having screen issues when using a DisplayLink dock (specifically a Targus dock [ACP71USZ]).
There are two external monitors connected to it (making it 3x screens total).
When connected the first time, all three screens work. But after a few minutes sometimes an hour, all three screens flicker and only the two external monitors work. When going to display settings, we only see the two external monitors. The laptop screen is not detected. When clicking detect, all three screens work again before flickering and returning to two external monitors only. When looking in the intel graphics GUI, nothing shows (until i repeat the process and press detect in display settings).
We tried installing to the latest intel drivers with no luck.
I ran the dell diagnostic tools multiple times (the preboot one and the desktop one) and saw no issues.
The older XPS 15 (9530) never has an issue.

Hi, I had a broken LCD problem (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x230-LCD-with-vertical-black-lines-fixed-by-t...).So I ordered a new screen but the connector is different: the new screen has a 30 pin connector while the old cable (n. 04W1679 from https://support.lenovo.com/it/en/partslookup) is bigger, now I don't know how to find a proper cable. The screen model is M125NWN1 R0.Which cable should I buy? A:X230 new LCD cable

Unfortunately, not a cable or connector are the key problem. Your new LCD has another signaling interface eDP, while x230 supports older one LVDS. They aren't compatible even if you'll find the cable with 30 pins connector. There is a way to use eDP LCD if you'll add additional, 3rd party, interface coverter kit, but it's a complicated enough action, needs skills. So, replace new LCD to LGD LP125WH2-SLB3, x230 compatible IPS panel.

Hello and welcome,

Since you used the MS tool, I'll assume you want to boot the flash drive and install in legacy mode.  Try turning off UEFI boot in BIOS if you haven't already.  Probably should set BIOS to defaults first.

If you actually want to to a EUFI install you'll need to prepare the flash drive differently.

Hello,I recently by a Lenovo X230 from local dealer , but unfortunately with comutrace activated. I have concern that this canbe hacked and used for cyber atack or to obtain my personal data. I am assuming the laptop is not flagged as stolen.  You can contact Absolute Software by email and ask that you want the machine "flagged for delete in their database" and the Computrace agent removed.  They will require some sort of receipt from when you bought it from the previous owner.  They also want the model and serial from the sticker on the back, plus, most important, the system board serial which you can get from the BIOS screen.  The systemboard serial is the key into their database.  They will then contact their registered owner and ask him if he or she will release the machine.  They will not remove the agent unless their registered owner agrees, even if the registered owner no longer is paying the license fee.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the RAM in the x230. I bought the base 4gb of RAM with the intention of upgrading it myself later. The stock RAM inside is a Samsung model with this serial: m471b5273dh0-cko However, I cannot find this model RAM to put in another identical stick into the open slot. The closest model available is: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MV-3T4G3/US Do you think these two sticks would be compatible? Did anyone else try a different type/model/amount of RAM? My gut feeling is that 8Gb of RAM would be great, and that 16Gb would be overkill. The other option is just to shell out a few more bucks and buy two pieces of matching RAM. I am considering Cruicals and Cosair Vengence RAM. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks, Jah

Hi Mim1234,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I am sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with no power on your ThinkPad X230.

Remove the AC adapter, system battery and CMOS (coin) battery (under the palm rest) for about 30 seconds.
Reattach the CMOS battery, palm rest, AC adapter and system battery.
Power your ThinkPad system ON.
If it powers on successfully, then update the BIOS and Embedded Controller code.
If it did not power on successfully, then have the ThinkPad system board (planar) replaced.

Please let us know the findings after performing the above troubleshooting steps.

Hope to hear back soon!

Best regards

My 230X ran Win 10 successfully from Jan 2016 until October 2016 (Build 10586.633).  Since last fall, Windows Update wastes about 1/2 hr every time the unit is booted to try to update to 1511. At this end of this process, the progress screen goes directly from 99% done (downloading, configuring, installing) to "can't finish ... now undoing the changes."  Sometimes an second reboot is needed to log on; sometimes not.  Same thing happens regardless of whether external monitor and/or mouse and/or keyboard are used and regardless of whether the unit is in its docking station.  Same thing happens whether or not I've deleted files in the "software download" folder or run clean-up utilities.  Using the PC is also interrupted by reminders that there are updates to install. Sometimes Windows Update will wait for the restart time I've selected; sometimes not.  Unit has 4 GB RAM, Norton 360 and a GoFlex back up drive. This model is NOT on the list tested for Win 10 1511 or Win 10 1607.  I don't know why, and a TA call to Lenovo gave no help.  I declined the offer of a paid TA session to solve this by reinstalling Win 8. Has any one had this problem? Is there a kill-switch for the automatic Win 10 updates? Other suggestions?  Tx!

What I tried:- reinstalling the drivers - Realtek High Definition Audio Driver  v. 6.0.1.7040, released 2013. 11. 11- uninstalling dolby- uninstall the Lenovo recommended drivers and installing generic ones from Realtek site (version 6.0.1.7541, released 2015.06.18)Every time the same happens: restart system, I have system sounds then after a few minutes the sound is gone.I mean I understand if I have no sound from start, it must be a hw problem or something, but how can something work for a while and be gone after? many thanks.

I was wondering how much of a headache will the X230 be to get rid of the whitelist, where I live its actually illegal I have seen some posts using a raspberry pi to reprogram the BIOS which seems to be a real pain in the butt, so what if I want to install an 802.11ac card, **bleep** so how fast is the mSATA on the X230, same as the X220 at SATA 300 MB/s or its it the faster 600 MB/s? I know the CPU can see 32GB of memory but I have not seen any 16GB memory sticks USB 3 is one of the improvements I like as my X220 had issues with my USB 3.0 express card

Would adding an SSD to my 4 year old X230 improve performance, or is the BIOS/Motherboard not new enough to make it worth while?

Just sourced an X230 Factory rebuild. Card reader and USB3 ports don't appear to work (16GB SD card and 32GB USB memory stick). Also TVSU won't install, but I think their drivers are up to date. What am I doing wrong, have I overlooked something?

Hi all,I am considering buying this monitor: https://displaysolutions.samsung.com/business-monitor/detail/1287/C43J89 and wanted to use my work provided x230. I know I wont be able to have the max resolution of 3,840 x 1,200, however do you think i could use one of the docks (i.e. ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3) and use the Display ports to connect to two of the inputs (one USB-C up and one Display Port)? So effectively giving 2 x (1920 x 1200) ThanksDom

I just received my X230 in the mail and while overall its a fantastic machine, light, capable, wonderful keyboard, sturdy, the trackpad is absolutely atrocious and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be (since many reviewers have been singing its praises). When UltraNav or generic Synaptic drivers are installed, the accuracy/resolution of the trackpad is absolutely dismal. If I slowly drag my finger across it, the cursor moves in 5-7 px "blocks," resulting in horrificully low resolution, chunky movement. It makes clicking on ANYTHING accurately nigh impossible. If I uninstall all Synaptic drivers (including UltraNav), the resolution is better (moves more in 1-2 px blocks) however the trackpad is exceedingly sensitive and touching it causes erratic movement (although you can see that it is more finite than before). What exactly is wrong here? It worked just awful out o fthe box. Am I going crazy or is this the way the X230 actually is and Lenovo messed this thing up? For reference, I've used Apple laptops for the past 5 years and am very used to having a large, smooth, accurate and fast glass trackpad. This is world's apart. The TrackPoint is accurate but its movement is too slow and laborous for me to enjoy. Please advise...

A:There has got to be something wrong with my X230 touchpad

I have the same problem! It jumps all over and makes me miss my t61. I have been changing every setting I can find without success.

Hi all, I am fairly new to owning a laptop (always had a desktop) and having an issue upgrading to windows 10. I have read that the x230 supports windows 10, but when I use the windows 10 upgrade assistant to try and upgrade I am greeted by a message saying the display does not support windows 10 and to contact the manufacturer. I have searched for an answer online and I suspect I am missing drivers or something along those lines? I am currently running windows 7 pro. Thanks a lot. Dan

I have an older ThinkPad x230 with a factory-installed Sierra Wireless MC7700-Gobi 4000 for AT&T LTE & HPSA+ adapter and SIM Card for AT&T LTE. I now have a new ThinkPad x260 with a factory-installed Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A (Sierra Wireless EM7455). There was no option to specify a SIM card like last time. Can I just remove the SIM card from the older x230 and put it in the newer x260? Or will I need a different SIM card?

A:Can I use SIM card from x230 with x260?

Hellox260 supports micro SIM card while x230 supports standard sized SIM card. Of course, you know these cards' sizes are incompatible.

Hello Experts, I have a X230  which has been serving me reliably during my African travels. Sometimes it lost power suddenly, but it was manageable.Since last week, however, it doesn't power on. Actually sometimes it does, a hard reset (pressing the power button for 30sec without the battery) helped a few times, but inconsistently. The notebook loses power in sleeping mode and I cannot turn it on, nor can I charge the battery: the LEDs don't even blink. When I am lucky, it will turn on another day and I can use it as long as it is awake. When I am unlucky I just keep pressing the power button with no results. Updating the BIOS also did not help. Since the notebook still has a warranty for 38 days, I took it to Lenovo Service Center in Lusaka, Zambia. They attributed the problem to faulty fan and overheating. Cleaned the fan but that didn't help. Unfortunately my situation does not allow me to wait two weeks for a new fan, also I am not certain it would help me turning the notebook on. I am now travelling to Malawi and Tanzania. I would very much appreciate an advice if it is possible to fix it, I have a small toolkit with me. If there's no other option than another service center, please advise whether it is possible to pre-order parts to another country. Please also let me know if you happen to now a magician/technician in these countries who could fix the issue. Many thanks in advance for your advice and opinion.
