x240 upgrade/ re-install

Q: x240 upgrade/ re-install

Hi, My dad is sending me his x240 that he no longer uses. I want to learn about upgrading the laptop. 1. SSD Drive (upgrade from old SATA to SSD)- What type of drive is required?- What tools do I need to replace the hard drive? 2. Operating system- How do I do a fresh install of the operating system once I have upgraded the drive to a new SSD drive? There is no CD/DVD. 3. Battery- How do I replace the battery to a new one to get better battery life?- Where do I buy it/ what type do I need? 4. RAM- The laptop will not be used intensively. MS Office, emails and browsing. Maybe a bit of photo editing/viewing. Will I need to upgrade from 4GB?- If so, how do I do this/what type of RAM is required? Thanks,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings,I have Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Laptop Configuration is following: i7-4600U(3.3GHz), 8GB RAM, 1TB 5400rpm HD, 12.5in 1366x768 LCD, ...Currently trying to do an upgrade. Already decided for SSD upgrade and now checking the RAM upgrade.Unfortunatly, I have found out that X240 has only one memory slot. Also I have found out following information: "Haswell processors all can take only 8GB UDIMMs or SO-DIMMs". Am I right understanding that RAM upgrade (e.g. to DDR3L SODIMM 16Gb, 1600MHz, CL11, 1.35V) is not possible at all? Thanks in advance.

I recently obtained an upgrade for Vista Ultimate (I'm currently running Vista Home Premium), dated 2007. According to the upgrade chart, it's supposed to be perfectly fine to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. However, I get past the product key dialog and the next one indicates that my system is not capable of taking an upgrade, but can perform a clean install. Strange.

I went on-line and ran into a blitz of different answers to this problem, but finally found something that might look like the reason:

Q. Could this problem be occuring because I have Vista Home Premium SP2 applied, and my Ultimate Anytime Upgrade only includes SP1?
A. Yes. you would need to uninstall the Windows Vista SP2 and then upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate.
Note: An upgrade always begins at the desktop. After uninstalling Windows Vista SP2, boot to the Windows Vista Home Premium desktop, then insert the Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade DVD disc in the DVD drive.

Is this right? Do I need to roll back SP2 in order to do the upgrade to Ultimate, then re-apply SP2 once it completes?
Also, side note question: I entered my product key and then the installation type dialog came up next after a few moments. Does this mean my product key passed the validation? I just want to be sure that my product will activate, as I bought this 2nd hand and was assured that it wasn't activated.

A:Ultimate Upgrade won't upgrade--only Clean Install option given

I am not going to answer your question, directly, but will say that a clean install is always better. Go with the clean install. You do not save time with an upgrade if you take into account the multitude of problems that may occur.
Back up your stuff, use Windows Easy Transfer and all you need to do is reinstall your software and you have the very best installatio, a clean install.
Enter your key after you have used the system for a few days, your software is all installed and you are satisfied, you have 30 days, which can be extended.

I have other posts on my VISTA reinstall problems but I'll make it short to say I had to reinstall my OS. Knowing I had to reinstall Office, I also installed Works 9.0 that came with computer (Dell). Now, that is exactly what was installed before when I installed the Office 2007 just fine the first time (pre-reinstall of VISTA).

However, now when I go to install Office, it tells me it can't find a required upgrade product. On the box Works 9 is listed as an eligible product and that is what I have installed. It gives me an option to browse to the folder where it is installed but I've tried and don't quite know where to point it to find what it wants. Works seems to be in many folders.

Does anyone know what I can do? I don't have internet on that specific computer right now because of the VISTA reinstall issues (see other post) has created an issue with all the network drivers.

A:Vista SP2 will not Install(error 0x80070002),In Place Upgrade Repair Install

Hello Steven, and welcome to Vista Forums.

With the problems that you are having, I would recommend that you backup anything that you do not want to lose and do a clean install instead. This way you will not have to worry about remnants of your previos installation messing with your new installation. After installing Vista with SP1, I would recommend installing the SP2 also. It may be best to only install a few updates at a time, or one a time for the ones that require a restart, to avoid them possible conflicting with each other during the restart.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I purchased an upgrade key from Microsoft last year and used it on my Win 7 home premium 64 bit installation and upgraded it to Win 7 pro 64. Lately, my system has gotten squirrelly and I wanted to
do the "upgrade" (repair) install from my CD. The system will not allow me to do this. It says that
Windows 7 Pro cannot be upgraded with Windows 7 Home Premium.

So now I'm stuck unless there's a way to uninstall the pro upgrade and revert back to home premium.
Is there a registry key I can delete or something so that it will work? I don't want to lose all the neat programs I have installed.

A:Can't upgrade install after running anytime upgrade

You are going to have to do a few registry tweaks to fool the Windows Installer in thinking you have the previous version. Once you have done so you can continue doing the upgrade repair process however you must do it while the machine is currently booted. (From the Desktop).

This link provides a good step by step process which you may want to try.

Please note that I have not completed these steps so please proceed with caution.

EDIT: I had to attach the link into a text document since the URL could not be copied.

Want to install OfficeXP Pro Upgrade on new laptop without first installing Office 2000 Pro (was on previous laptop and so have original CD and why purchased upgrade of XP version).

Not a convenience/time/being lazy issue, but have had very poor experiences when doing similar upgrades in the past. Installs appeared to have gone OK only to then invariably quite a while later having problems that take forever to resolve and causes end up being due to the upgrades not having done a 100% 'clean' job, i.e., leaving/not replacing various .DLLs, etc.

Any/all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello Beachboy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you are installing W8 (guest) in a VM running in W7 (host), then it will not affect your W7 installation at all since it's only a VM running in W7.

Depending on what VM program you are using, you might take a look at the tutorials below to see if they may help. Once setup using either tutorial below, you would go into the VM's settings to set what you would like to share/use from your W7.

Is this what the future has come to? When I have a fatal problem with my OS I have to start all over again? XP repair install is way better than this.

A:Is 'Upgrade install even meant to function as a repair install at all?

In Windows 7, a repair install is also known as an "in-place upgrade install". This tutorial explains how to perform a repair install and also shows how to obtain a legal installation disk if one is needed.

Repair Install

I've successfully repaired several Windows 7 machines and in each case it took less than 90 minutes. After completing the process it will be necessary to reinstall Windows Updates. That could take another 90 minutes or more depending on how many updates are available.

Some folks prefer doing a clean install just to get rid of the factory bloatware and start off with a wiped hard drive. One of the Forum experts prepared a tutorial on how to clean reinstall a factory OEM machine.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

And the basic clean install tutorial.

See the "sticky" in this same forum:

Assuming that your problem isn't based in hardware, the clean install is recommended.

Make sure that you have drivers for your Ethernet controller on hand, in case that the Win7 installer doesn't have them. (As you don't list your system specs, I can't guess about that.)

I've a customer whose Win 7 Home 64 bit won't install all the updates. He's got a list of ~24 updates that, when installed, results in error code 8007371b or 80073712.

I've run SFC successfully with no errors as well as AntiMalwarebytes. Also ran MS Fixit 8025769253168492.4.1 which said it found 2 errors and fixed them (but it didn't really). Curiously, when I ran this util in Safe Mode, it reported back that two errors were found but only one could be fixed.

Also ran MS Fixit 50123 successfully.

Downloaded and ran the Update System Readiness Tool which found no errors to fix.

Booted in Safe Mode and also in Clean boot. Still could not successfully install the updates.

The Windows Update troubleshooter was run but it too didn't fix the problem.

Customer had tried the Upgrade route from an ISO he made and it ran to about 75% completion but then failed. He said the failure point happened when the upgrade was installing applications (???? ) or something like that.

I want to re-run the upgrade, but what I want to know is, is there something else I could check prior, something that help me identify the problem. TIA

A:Some Win7 updates won't install. Can't install SP1 or Win 7 Upgrade

Oh, one more thing. When the upgrade failed for the customer, the error message referenced lack of disk space. However, he's clearly enough space (~800 Gb). He couldn't remember the exact wording but the message stated something similar to "not enough disk space to install the applications."

I have read the tutorials on here about using a win 7 upgrade disc for a clean install, but let me tell you it don't work for me!

I bought a new hard drive and win 7 upgrade disc (I do own a copy of win 98 and win xp upgrade so thats all legal) I put the win 7 upgrade disc in and it started to install it gets right to the bit where you need to put your product key in and then its says INVALID LICENCE KEY I ve tried and tried but thats all it will say (and yes I did un check the activate windows on line)

So I then tried installing my xp upgrade disc after it scans the hard drive it says please put your copy of win 98 in the disc drive to see if you are eligible for the upgrade (not exact words but you get the drift) after it checks it then it says put you xp disc back in the drive. but it wont install it just keeps going round in a loop doing the same things as above and wanting to re formate the drive all the time and asking for the win 98 disc.

I am now thinking of having to install win 98 then xp upgrade then win 7 (I want to use the 64 bit disc too) seems a bit long winded but I don't know what else to do. Its a bit of a pain because win 98 disc won't recognise my cd drive I assume because its SATA, anyway I have an old ATA/IDE cd drive which I ve just rigged up and win 98 is now formating the drive but its gona take ages.

Any help ? or is my long winded way the only way ?

Hi Guys, I'm trying to upgrade a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine to Win 10 Pro 64-bit. Ideally I want a clean install...

I tried using the method that worked before on other PCs (Media Creation Tool -> Upgrade this PC) but I got a BSOD when it was "Checking for Updates", so I was wondering:

Do I have to go through the upgrade saga prior to a clean install, or can I just do a clean install straight-off?

I have the Win 7 license key and have a Win 10 (1511) Install DVD to use.

Cheers,

Mike.

A:Win 7 -> Win 10 upgrade - can I do a clean install instead of upgrade?

Install it as an update first and wait for it to activate. Once it is activated, you can format the drive and do a clean install. Just skip when asked for a key during installation as you don't need one. When it is finally installed, it will contact Microsoft and see you have an activation for your computer, which it will use to activate.

After Windows 10 is activated the first time, it remembers the hardware, so subsequent installs use the same activation if your hardware has not significantly changed.

Howdy HiVolt,

I don't think that one will fit.  There are several different lengths of m.2 SSDs and the one in the X240 is 42mm.  The one you linked is longer than that.

Up until recently the highest capacity 42mm part was 128GB IIRC, but I think someone has come out with a 256GB 42mm unit.  [edit] I'm not able to verify that just now.  [more edit] Yes I am.  See post below.

Here's their compatibility list.  Please note I have no personal experience with this company.

I'm finding this decision quite hard to decide on and can't decide what to do. I am very picky about wasted space or unnecessary stuff on my hard drive, yet I'd rather not install everything all over again which will take about 20 hours or so.

My question is...if I do an upgrade-install, can I just delete everything in the Windows.old folder and have everything practically the same as a clean install? Or will there be still be some left over things from the hundreds of programs I've installed and uninstalled?

Edit: I've ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and everything seems ok.

A:Better to upgrade-install or clean-install?

A clean install is always better, and is not always easier than an in place upgrade. The reason is that any Virus, corruption or other problem that you have with your prior OS, will carry over to Windows 7, with an inplace install. The members of this forum disagree on many things, but it is almost unanimous that a clean install is best.

Hello, In short, fn key does not work in lenovo x240 with latest bios update (2.35). I can swap fn and ctrl keys, and then function keys works via the ctrl key, but the fn key does not work as ctrl. I think this problem is OS independent (tried w10, w7, ubuntu). I have tried installing older bios for this model from the following page:https://support.lenovo.com/es/en/olddownloads/ds035950 But I can only install a few of the newest ones, as the older ones report that they are not compatibles with my system (though the readme says w7-w10 compatibility). No luck with any of the ones I could install. I also tried the hotkey features integration from here, no luck either:http://support.lenovo.com/es/en/downloads/ds029026  This question has been answered a gazillion times, but ill do it one more time as there is no solution posted anywhere. Examples:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X240-Fn-Key-not-responding/m-p/1551442/highli...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X240-Fn-key-not-working/m-p/1844428/highlight... Cheers and sorry for cloning this question one more time (I'm sure you can smell my desperation).

Servicing a X240 laptop, m/n 20AMS0G10F, came in because of no AMT option available in the bios. Called Lenovo Tech Support, case#304TQ58, and replaced the system board. When laptop first powered on noticed AMT option was available, set the time and date, rebooted and ran the Maintance Disk ver 1.86, after input of the s/n and m/n rebooted the laptop and AMT option is now gone.Called Lenovo Tech Support again and was told to replace the board again, replaced the system board, powered the unit on and checked, AMT option was present, input the time and date, rebooted and ran the Maintance disk again, input s/n & m/n, reboot and again the AMT option is gone.Any AMT experts out there? Any way to bring this option back? HELP! Have another that had the board replaced, has AMT now but afraid to run Maintance disk.

I recently purchased a refurbished x240 - I am having 2 issues, which I would welcome help with: 1. the areas with buttons on the top and bottom of the track pad also move the cursor - this often causes an inaccuracy, with the cursor moving slightly before or after pressing one of these buttons - is there anything which can do done about this, or is it a design fault? 2. my computer arrived with no internal battery, just a 6-cell external battery - the seller claims that the internal battery only functions if the external battery is a 3-cell, and that there is therefore no point in me purchasing an internal battery - can this be verified? Thanks for your help!

I'm looking for a repository for old wireless drivers for the X240. We need to run some tests with old drivers vs. new but I can't find them to download.Thanks.

A:Old drivers for X240

Hello and welcome,

I don't have a direct answer but there may be a way to finesse this.

Just did some poking around in the Win 7 wifi drivers.  Using the 64-bit Win 7 Intel driver,  I copied the link to the latest and replaced the "version" part of the link with an older version extracted from the readme.

I was able to download nz0wh0w 2016/05/10 by modifying the link to the latest version.

Does that or similar get you what you need?

Z.

Hi, We are experiencing issues with our x240-x260's Win 7 64-bit laptops Windows 8.1 and up seem to be ok so far The CPU is reaching 70 degrees and even goes up to 75 degrees in one case we have seen so far We have checked the task manager and the CPU looks fine, everything is appearing normal (CPU levels are average not high at all). Memory is also looking fine. Battery is also dead between an hour or 2 as well. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thanks

Dear All, i have Lenovo X240 which I bought from France two years ago. It's serial number is PF00YEU9. Currently i am in the UAE on an international assignment. I took my laptop to local service dealer for screen replacement for dead pixels but he refused to take the laptop, saying he was.not sure whether the laptop covered under international warranty or not. He asked to to talk to Lenovo customer service at 800035702810, and if they agree, I've to show an email evidence to local dealer that it is covered under international warranty. I tried on this number but it's not responding. I tried to find customer support email but it's not available on lenovo's website. Only one month warranty is left on my laptop and I am not going to visit France in next couple of months. Please advise what to do? regards

Hi,I have the following problem. The 'Fn' key is not working. When I press 'Fn+Esc' to enable the FnLock, nothing happens. But when I switch the 'Fn' and 'CTRL' key in the BIOS, I can press 'Ctrl+Esc' to enable the lock (small green LED on the 'Fn' key is on). But then the 'CTRL' functionality (now on the 'Fn' key) is not working anymore. The shop where I ordered the Laptop already replaced the keyboard but this didn't help. Does anybody have the same problem and can help me? Thank you. Additional information:- I ordered the Laptop in Germany, but with an US keyboard layout (the Shop replaced the german keyboard with an english one)- I updated the BIOS when I received the Laptop (below the BIOS information): BIOS Information    Vendor: LENOVO    Version: GIET72WW (2.22 )    Release Date: 03/25/2014    Address: 0xE0000    Runtime Size: 128 kB    ROM Size: 16384 kB    Characteristics:        PCI is supported        PNP is supported        BIOS is upgradeable        BIOS shadowing is allowed        Boot from CD is supported        Selectable boot is supported        ACPI is supported        USB legacy is supported  ...
