Giant Antispyware scan freezes.

Q: Giant Antispyware scan freezes.

My giant antispyware scans files, folders, cookies, etc... When I run a scan it freezes once it gets to scanning cookies. It never did that before & now all of a sudden it does. I was in my documents & files & other stuff like that eraseing some cookies. Is it some thing I did? Did I erase an impotant cookie? Or is it just coincidence & my giant antispyware program is just screwed up? & how can I fix it?

Preferred Solution: Giant Antispyware scan freezes.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In the past day, my computer has been very tempermental. I am running Vista Home Premium and have been for about 2 months without any issues. I run Avira Antivir and Kaspersky Internet Security in the background. I ran a full Kaspersky scan and have no issues. Antivir has not found anything either, except for HP false positives. When I run Ad-Aware and Spybot scans, nothing shows up. I also ran CCleaner to scrub temp files and registry. Also, a quick scan with MBAM was clean.

But when I try to run a full scan in MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware, the computer hangs. This usually happens when the screen saver kicks in. So I disabled the screen saver, but it still happens. I cannot access anything at that point and have to power off from the power supply (ctl alt delete won't work).

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Try disabling your anti-virus for the scans
Just remember to turn it back on
Also disable Spybot's Teatimer function if you use it

I used to have Giant AntiSpyware but it has been taken over by Microsoft.
I downloaded their new version when my subscription expired but when I installed it, it froze my computer?
I removed it and am reluctant to install it again?
Does anyone have any ideas? Or would a proprietary program be better if I purchased one? e.g. Spyware Doctor?

Hello nabbersHere are a couple of on site links, that will hopefully, steer you in the right direction. The daily scan by MS antispyware has been coming up clean ever since the initial scan done when I installed it a couple of weeks ago. However, I got suspicious and ran an Adaware scan immediately after the MS scan and it came up with the usual 38 or so critical objects. The same ones that I was removing daily using just Adaware for the past month or so. I have Avast and it usually found 3 or 4 trojens. I have a router, but added McAfee's firewall from AOL, and since then Avast is finding 24 to 30 viruses daily. What is going on here? Previous to all of this I had AOL's spyware and it would usually find 10 or so........when I first added Adaware it found over 300. Look, all I want to do is stay as clean as possible.......why isn't any of this working for me? Help would be appreciated.

A:MS Antispyware scan says nothing detected but..........

Run these in safe mode, with system restore turned off (you will lose previous restore points). Many times malware hides itself in "protected" system files; these are generally availble when you run the applications as noted above. If this step fails to resolve your problem, then consider posting a HijackThis! log in the appropriate forum. See the information/instructions posted here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/956/how-to-submit-a-hijackthis-log/Regards,John

I had a pretty nice spyware and adware infection a few days ago. I posted here and did everything as MicroBell and greyknight17 told me (see my posts 05-04-2005 and following). Everything seemed to be ok, all scans clear. TSF guys told me that my log is clear. But then I've installed Microsoft antispyware. I've run Microsoft antispyware scan and it has detected following:

EGroup instant access
GXB Plug-in dialer
I've removed all of them. Then I run it one more time and it was ok.

It found also 'Real VNC remote control software'. What is it? Is it dangerous?
It shows me also an alert: 'Windows netbios messenger service is running'. Is it a problem, or should I just ignore it?

Please can u help me and try to check one more time if it's ok now? Or what should I do more?

Thank you in advance!

A:Only MS Antispyware scan has detected infections

MS Antispyware is know for giving many false positives. The infections are probably located in one of your quaranteen folders...Norton, et al.

VNC is a program that allows a person to take control of your computer, usually for the purpose of fixing it without giving endless instructions. Some help desks use it. You can go to add/remove and uninstall it, if you like.

Got to www.grc.com and run "Kill the Messenger"; that should end the messenger running problem.

Try running your scans in safe mode. The Advanced Boot Options menu lets you start Windows in advanced troubleshooting modes. You can access the menu by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts. Select safe mode there, and run the scan.

I am hoping someone can help me out with my problem. I recently installed MS AntiSpyware on my desktop PC and I found 112 spyware items. I deleted them and when I tried to reboot, I had a blank desktop and I didn't have the taskbar at the bottom. I booted into safe mode and did a system restore and it looked like everything was fine and then when I rebooted, I am still mising my desktop as well as the taskbar.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Do you have any advice on how to resolve this?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello again my friends, I sent an e-mail to Pest Patrol a few days ago about the CWS that their software shows on my system, no reply yet... I thought I'd post this info just to see if anyone has any feelings or thoughts on this matter. After a format and complete re-install, pest patrol shows that I have a case of the CWS blues. I tried to quarantine it, but it disapears from the scan box, but when I look in the quarantine hold area, it's not there. Re-scan and there it is. I'm thinking a false positive, what do you think? The following is a hand made copy of the pest patrol scan info: CWS C:\Program Files\MicrosoftAntiSpyware\gcThreatAuditSettingsData.gcd Any ideas? Thanks, Carl Oh yeah, I scanned my system with an up-to-date copy of CWShredder 2.14, and a few others anti-spyware programs, all scans showed my system clean...........

A:Pest Patrol Scan of Microsoft Antispyware

I think it is a false positive.CWS C:\Program Files\MicrosoftAntiSpyware\gcThreatAuditSettingsData.gcd In particular the file path seems to lead to a data file, not an executable one.I've found that individual anti-spyware programs will turn up findings that you should(as you have done) question, at least initially and thereafter depending on what you learn about the program. Basically there is value in the false positives, to a degree. At least you know the program works, and if it is not a known "rogue" program designed to deceive you, (and Pest Patrol is not, to my understanding, one of those) it simply means that in the changing environment of malware detection, overlapping techniques can turn up some odd results. All the more reason to maintain a varietal approach to anti-spyware scanning.Oh, and hold off on actions like reformating based on indidivual findings that are in conflict with other known good programs.Posting here is also a good method of saving yourself some grief.

I was trying to download a trial version of a game and next thing I know, I keep getting a pop-up that my pc is infected AND my desktop has been replaced with a message and an awful blue screen. Also, the icons tray has the yellow alert that keeps popping up as "System Integrity Scan Wizard".

I'm on a backup machine that gets very little use until the last few days. It has started freezing during scan disc at around 85% completed. This is whether I use manual or restart automatic.

Gads, I've been reduced to smileys.

A:Scan disc freezes

Scandisk might not be freezing, but having found bad clusters it reads/writes to them to verify they're bad, then find spare clusters and point the FAT to them. This could take a long time, depending on the number of bad clusters.

Run it again and leave it alone for, let's say half-an-hour.

If it doesn't carry through, then your disk may have serious errors, in which case you should download the drive utility from the manufacturer's web site and run it.

A:Malwarebyte freezes my Pc after scan?

Issue Finaly Resolve

The problem was with Panda Global Protection 2010 (Anti-virus). It wasn't allowing Malwarebytes so I had to do these five easy steps:

1. Open Panda Global Protection
2. Click Firewall
3. Under the tab Rules that says: Specify which program to access the internet (or network), click "setting".
4. Now, everywere you see the word "Malwarebytes" in the list, you will have to click - Allow inbound & outbound connections.
5. Click Ok and you're done.

I hope it can help someone. Thanks guys.

I am a total novice on computers and need help!! whenever I perform a scan either from anti-virus or any malware the scan freezes about a minute in and all I can do is power off the computer. I'm worried I may have some type of virus that my computer doesn't detect. I did have a virus that AVG would not get rid of and had to do a factory reset on my computer but not sure if this has helped! I performed a hijackthis scan if this info is of any use to anyone.
Any help would be much appreciated!

They all freeze up somewhere in the scan ... And I have to do reboot thingy.

The AVG scan of my C: partition freezes at ...

I've rolled back a HD several months ... Using an Acronis recovery file ... removed/reinstalled AVG, Zone Alarm ... etc ... so far-so good
But when I do a Windows update .. the problem starts.

Whenever I try to run a virus scan with Webroot, it will scan through about 600k files before it reaches one called plymouth_pumpkinpatch.xml. Webroot will (try to) scan this file for up to 6 hours, at which point the entire computer will freeze. I've run Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, neither of which have frozen on plymouth_pumpkinpatch.xml or have detected any viruses, infected cookies, etc. like Webroot has (within 5 minutes, it finds cookies, 1 Mal, and 1 Trojan.)

My problem here is that because of plymouth_pumpkinpatch.xml, I caan't complete or even stop a Webroot scan to remove the already detected infected files from my computer. I cannot find this file; it's somewhere deep in the Windows files. Do I need this file? How can I find it? How can I complete a Webroot scan?

Thank you for your help.

every single time i run scandisk, regardless if it finds any problems prior to the surface, it freezes during the surface scan. it doesn't matter if i run it in windows with only systray and explorer running, or if i run it in dos, it freezes during the surface scan. any idea why this happens?

A:surface scan freezes

Most likely cause is that your hard drive has a bad spot on it that scandisk can't deal with.

When I run McAfee Virus Scan, it freezes around 39000 files while scanning System Volume Information and I have to shut down my computer using the power button. At that point in the scan, McAfee has detected 5 PUPS, 4 of which have to do with my System Volume Information. I have had problems with other virus scans as well (Panda, e.g.) where my system would freeze or I would get an error message saying that Windows was shut down in order to prevent further damage. I tried to get help from McAfee but I am getting no response so I was hopeful that someone here could help me out. I recently had viruses removed with the help of the HiJack This forum and I don't think viruses are the problem.

Hi there! I'm new and I've been dealing with a pesky problem for quite some time now.

I'm currently running on a Window's Vista Home Basic on a 32-bit operating system with a Dell Inspiron 1525 model. Lately, whenever I run a virus scan, it always freezes my computer at "D:\Tools\PCRestore.exe". If I try to click anything, it freezes the program (including the start menu). Also, clicking or right-clicking on PCRestore.exe also causes the computer to freeze. I've tried several different antivirus softwares including Webroot Spysweeper, AVG, Avira, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I've tried running it on Safe Mode and the computer still freezes. I'm not sure if this is the cause of a virus or not since my computer is unable to complete a full scan. However, if I do a Quick Scan on any antivirus software, it scans fine without detecting a thing. I currently only have Microsoft Security Essentials installed. A week ago, I was able to run a successful FULL scan using MSE in Safe Mode and discovered 4 viruses with Java and had them all removed. I'm not sure how it scanned past PCRestore, but when I tried to scan today, the same problem occured.

When attempting a virus scan (I've tried multiple scans using multiple programs), the computer freezes when it's 88% complete. It freezes at a file in the winsxs folder. The file is system.servicemodel.install.dll. I've read in some forums that you should not touch the winsxs folder, but I did try to delete this file (even after changing permissions on the folder) and Vista will not let me. I'm wondering if this is some sort of virus.

The speed and ability to complete an anti-virus or anti-malware scan depends on a variety of factors. The program itself and how its scanning engine is designed to scan: using a signature database vs heuristic scanning or a combination of both.Options to scan for spyware, adware, riskware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPS).Options to scan memory, boot sectors, registry and alternate data streams (ADS).Type of scan performed: Deep, Quick or Custom scanning. What action has to be performed when malware is detected.A computer's hard drive size.Disk used capacity (number of files to include temporary files) that have to be scanned.Types of files (.exe, .dll, .sys, .cab, archived, compressed, packed, email, etc) that are scanned.Whether external drives are included in the scan.Competition for and utilization of system resources by the scanner.Other running processes and programs in the background.Interference from malware.Interference from the user.To speed up your scans, uninstall unnecessary programs, clean out the temporary files or use ATF Cleaner first, temporarily disable any other real-time protection tools, close all open programs and do not use the computer during the scan. If the scan still seems slow or hangs, then try performing the scan in "safe mode".Note: It is not unusual for an anti-virus or anti-malware scanner to be suspicious of some compressed, archived, .cab and packed files because they have difficulty reading what is inside them. Sorry for double posting this....just realised this is probably a better place to post rather than in "Operating Systems".....

OK....this is my first post. Let me start by saying I am reasonable computer literate and I have exhausted all my options in trying to fix my problem...which is this....

I use Vista Home Premium.

When I run a full system scan with AVG the computer freezes when it gets into the Windows\inf directory. It does start scanning this folder, but freezes while scanning it. It is not at any particular file, but over a small range of files within this inf folder. The only way to get the computer working again is to turn the power off. I left it in frozen mode today and received the "Blue Screen Of Death", however it restarted itself and seems to work OK now.

I then ran the MS Malicious Software Removal and it too froze the computer at the same place....windows\inf\* ....had to power down again.

Finally I ran Rkill over it and it reported NO malicious software running.

So the only thing I can think of now is that maybe my hard drive has a damaged section on it.

Any ideas or direction would be appreciated.

Cheers all

My computer started freezing when I was out of town (with my computer) without any internet connection. The first hint was Spotify acting weird and sometimes freezing/crashing the computer. I tried to scan the computer with Norton 360 and it froze, both with "Quick Scan" and "Full System Scan". I ran "PC Health Advisor" a few times and fixed everything it found wrong. I also Defragmented the disk, used evidence remover with "Revo Uninstaller". I also tried scanning with "Registry Reviver" and fixing the problems the program found. The computer still froze when running virus scans until I ran it in safe mode. It found 3 viruses and removed them, I wanted to be safe so I tried to run a startup scan with norton (can't remember what it was called) and the computer froze. I then got Kaspersky PURE 3.0 trial and ran a full scan and no viruses found. Then during the rootkit scan the computer froze again. Then I tried running Check Disk but was it was unable to do so when I restarted and cannot start my computer in safe mode anymore. At last I ran "TDSSKiller" and nothing turned up. So I found this site and wanted to check if someone here could help me.

I just finished reading an old thread about someone who was having the same problem I have had for years. I have not been able to carry out a full computer scan with any virus software or Ad-Aware in years. In fact, any attempt at defragmenting also freezes my computer. The only option, then, is to shut it down using the power off button.

I followed the instructions given to the other person who had this problem up until the point where he did a scan using Command Prompt. I tried to scan my computer using Command Prompt too, as the other person was instructed to do, but my computer froze at 38%. This is where I couldn't follow the help given on that thread anymore.

So what do you do in this situation if your computer freezes doing the Command Prompt scan too?
