Username log in with $ signs

Q: Username log in with $ signs

What does it mean when your seeing a user named after your own computer followed by a dollar sign? My computer is called MYSURFACEPRO_6 But I'm seeing computer log on and privilege changes made by username MYSURFACEPRO_6$ and always seeing notifications about unauthorized changes being blocked from changes being made to "mscorsvw.exe" I've been told dollar signs are not a good sign. Is this true?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I used the Control Panel's "User Accounts"/"Change an Account" to change my Username on XP Home without any problems. However, under Documents and Settings, the directory with all my settings still has the old Username. Can I just rename the directory to the new one I created and which is reflected as my Username on login, or will that create problems.

I am the administrator of the account and would not like to get locked out or cause other types of problems. Can someone who is familiar with this type of maneuver confirm that it is OK to just rename the directory or how to go about approaching this?

Thanks for any help.

My step-dad's laptop had its hard drive replaced over a year ago with a solid-state drive, which I did the replacing. Now the laptop will not detect the drive, after it had been working fine.

My question is: does this indicate a corrupted drive or a ssd that has died? And typically what are the normal symptoms of an ssd that has failed?

I know that this is a Windows forum, but the laptop in question is a Macbook Pro running OS X Leopard. The ssd is a OCZ Vortex 120GB (I believe).

Now before anyone criticizes this laptop or me because this is a Mac, please note that this is NOT my laptop.

A:Signs of a bad SSD

Do you happen to know what Firmware the drive is on?
Also, you say you cant see the drive in the bios anymore?

If the drive is not showing in the bios it may be "lost" The best thing for you to do in this situation is post at the official OCZ forums.

Perhaps Ryder can get you going again.

I have a 30GB Vertex. The first one died about 1 month or so after FW 1.5 update. It had to be RMA'd.

They sent a new one that came with FW 1.5. It too died after about 3 months.

For me, the 1st time I had a lot of System corruption 1 day. Next day, missing boot Mgr, then Gone from Bios.

The second drive gave a BSOD, then would not post if connected.

Thats how mine acted when they died. (Both times the drive disapeared from bios)

You can place a jumper and get it to be recognized ... best to have OCZ officials guide through that process.

They were able to revive my second drive and working fine now in this manner.

If this is the case, be warned it may involve a destructive back-flash and running a test tool then reflashing to the newest FW. Meaning a re-install of Windows.

hope you have a Image handy

Im buying this new computer to replace my 1year old one.
im getting it for a really good price and i was worried that it migth have been oc'ed to hell and back. are there any ways to check for an OC?

the processor is a amd athlon 64 3200+ 939 but im suspiciuos of an over clock of that as he may have bought a a cheaper version 2800+ and OC'ed it up to a 3200+? i drew to this conclusion as it has a custom cooler on the cpu he said it ran at 50degrees and he has no reciept for it. can i check to see if it really is what it is made out to be?

A:Signs of an OC

Download and run cpu-z.

Look under processor name. It will say what the cpu actually is. And there is no 939 2800+, 3000+ is as low as 939 cpus go.
Also, check the htt speed, it should be at 200mhz, if not it's oc'ed.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and at my wits end!!! I can't find a cure for my problem ANYWHERE! When I type or click sometimes I get ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++, these PLUS signs will run on forever if I don't hit the BACK button on my keyboard. That stops it, temporarily, but it ALWAYS comes back. It's not a bad keyboard because it also happens when I just "click" on something.

A:So many (not responding) signs

There are many things that can be done and for the most part, there's more than one problem.
Let's be sure that you're truly free of malware.
Download and install FREE Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.
Be careful to not land up with the trail version of both.
Once you are through with both, please advise what you found and if it helped. At the same time, please give us the make and model of your machine.

This morning, I usually boot up my system and was confronted with my motherboards logo, which i had disabled a few years ago. In fact, i forgot where in setup i did it. Its an ASUS mb. There was a message at the bottom to click on DEL. I did, and then the typical post came up and it went by so quickly, that all i can see was CMOS among other things. I did see that it wanted me to go into setup, which i did, and the only thing i noticed was my date and time is all screwed up. Could that be the reason for all of this unusual behaviour? It happened again this afternoon with that asus logo and this time i clicked on Del and it went directly into the XP logo and all is well again ..so far..Is this a sign of bad things acoming? Could one of the signs of infection be an antivirus/ malware program not working? Or could it be a problem with the program itself?

A:What are signs of infection?

Program conflicts, improperly installed updates, or more than one security program can also affect your antivirus program. An infection can also stop your antivirus from working depending on what kind of malware it is. Malware can prevent you from accessing security websites, produce popups, or BSOD's. Looking at some of the headings on the malware forum will give you a good idea what to look for if you think you might be infected.

A:Signs of faulty PSU?

Look at the voltages reported by BIOS or some system health utility. They should all be within 5% of the nominal value (that's 11.4-12.6, 4.75-5.25, 3.14-3.47)

Put a CD in all your optical drives, power off. Turn the computer on again and see if it can manage to spin up all the hard drives plus the CDs.

Hey all, i've been running this pc for a good year or two, been flawless up until yesterday...I was playing some game (I really was ) and then the screen was full of artifacts...first time i alt+tabed and tabed back in and it was ok, then 10 min later it did the same but the whole computer seemed froze..yet i could hear the ingame sound/music.

When i tried booting up the comp lots of $$$ signs appeard during the booting up process, even where it says safe mode or start windows normally and blabla...so first i chose to boot it up normally, the loading screen of windows was fine, when i reached the logging screen it was a big artifacts like if i hammered my LCD Monitor. I rebooted again, the first screen you see is my MOBO screen which is gigabyte, its usually completetly white with some lime green colors but now the white had some black dots all over it, and the usual $$$ signs after that screen and then it would just freeze at logging screen and crash.

I opened my case and looked at my video card, it was a bit dusty but nothing wrong with the card itself like there were no burnt contacts or anything, so iput it back in and rebooted my comp..with $$ signs of course, this time i chose safe mode, it booted perfectly, i got in my device manager in "safe mode" and UNINSTALLED my GEforce 8800 GT. My computer restarted and i could still see the dollar signs BUT i can actually get to the loggin screen and get into my windows like i would normally but without my GPU ... Read more

What are the signs of a fried motherboard or PSU?

A:Signs of fried m/b or PSU?

Steve Gunn I've read a number of your past threads, and would have to say that you are not very technically minded. Therefore questions like is my motherboard or PSU fried, can be answered extremely easily and quickly

If the Power Supply doesn't startup, try another. If the new one works throw out the old one
If the new one doesn't work either, then it could be a motherboard fault

Regarding motherboard faults. Usually you are given a sounding beep code, or possibly even a power light. If you don't get either of these (whilst testing with a new power supply - ie above) Then I would suspect the motherboard is highly likely "fried"

Any further help, post more specific fault issues
And just on that word "specific" Make sure that you always create a descriptive Title. The Title you used on this thread was: "Signs of ..." This is not descriptive, and worse still, a large number of your old threads were also not descriptive. Please be more descriptive of your Title in future (I'll keep an eye out ) And also try to be more specific with your questions, ie include actual fault description.

Good Luck, glad this one is totally solved.

I have a problem in Windows 7 in that wherever my cursor is accessible, I will have plus signs appearing incessantly, even when I, nor any other object, is nearby either keyboard.*

I also have a dual boot- The Linux distribution Ubuntu on this laptop and though the problem will also occur there, if I crtl+a and delete them, they will stop.

Otherwise, when occurring on windows, I need to plug in a usb mouse (the touch pad will not work) and shut it down or force a shut down if one is not available to me.

Can anyone help?

I am posting on behalf of my noob sister, who seems to be incapable of keeping her laptop in working order. Anyway since a few weeks her laptop isn't emitting any sound no matter what app or procedure you are currently undertaking (Youtube, WMP, Windows startup noises).

She mentioned to me that on occasion it the sound works by pure chance but u need to keep the program that is emitting the sound on otherwise if you mute it or pause it then it won't work when you try to turn it back on again.

Upon inspecting her laptop I almost passed out considering she hadn't had any up to date security software for almost a year. She suggested it might be a virus but since I have never heard of a virus that only kills your sound capabilities I was sceptical.

I have updated Norton 360, done a full system scan, defraged all drives and bought Regcure and cleaned out the registry. Still there seems to be no sound.

I checked the Sound options in Control Panel and it indicates that the built in speakers are working (there is a little volume bar that keeps changing - tested it with a youtube vid which I know and the bar level corresponded to the song). I've tried with and without headphones, different sound options, tested the Microsoft sounds in Audio options in Control Panel all to no avail.

Apparently this problem appeared out of no where. I am not sure if the sound driver is broken, corrupted or simply blocked. Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Having experienced virus problems a LONG time ago on a different machine, I'm very cautious now. Earlier about 3 hours ago I was searching on Google for images for my PowerPoint presentation I have to give in class tomorrow. Google has that thing now where the photo shows up in the middle of the screen and the webpage loads in the background (hate it). I clicked on one picture and my Symantec scanner suddenly said on the bottom of my screen that it blocked a "fake app attack" on a webpage? Or something. I didn't understand it and couldn't find anywhere to get more information about what had just happened. Now about ten minutes ago I get this popup...I clicked the X, the webpage popped up anyway, it was a fake scan with a long list of viruses that were supposedly on my computer. I closed Firefox, which deletes all my cookies, history and everything, every single time...haven't seen anything since so I'm hoping thats a good sign.Downloaded Malware Bytes, RKILL, and ran scans in both as well as with Symantec.Should I be worried? Did not see any detection of something on my computer. I'm a graphic designer so the files on my computer are super important...yes I've got them backed up. But my external was plugged in while this whole thing happened...I don't want the virus to cross over! >_<

After multitasking with alot of windows open & alot of photo editing- copy pasting for example, the following happens.

- PC locks up for 10-15secs after closing large paint res windows & itunes.
- Print screen shows up black.
- Alt+printscreen locks up pc & than disables aero.
- Sometimes taskbar goes black until hover mouse over it.

As soon as aero is disabled the pc runs bad & lags until reset.
My gpu is GT220 & I run two monitors. I want to know if this card & its drivers are just bad? As its not a popular card. All drivers are up to date.

So would getting a new decent card fix these issues?

thank you.

A:Are these signs/symptoms of GPU problem?

With a lot of windows open you might be maxing out your memory which will result in performance issues. You might also be maxing out your gpu's capabilities if it isn't very powerful.

So here's a problem that I have incurred for the past 2-3 weeks. After having to have my DSL modem/router replaced by the provider for lack of connectivity, the company provided me one that will connect without any problem via ethernet. When I first connected my desktop by ethernet, and completed the setup, the desktop works fine. Then I attempted to connect my laptop. WRONG! Would only sign on using an IP address of, which is nothing like my actual IP address. After an hour of aggravation, and ultimately a phone call, changing the channel inside the modem worked and I was able to sign on.

To make the really long story short.....EVERY DAY I have to sign into the modem and physically change the channel settings for the wireless connection. I have gone from AUTO - 13 individually. The DSL provider insists that "that can't happen" and "it's your laptop". The problem is that my desktop is also wireless capable....it won't connect to wireless without the same routine! However, the laptop will connect without issue on the ethernet.

So, my question (before I call these people back and make an utter fool of myself)....this IS apparently a modem issue is it not?

A:DSL-Good IP drops...Bad IP signs on

That sounds like some thing wrong with the modem/router - in my experience companies hate to replace equipment and if it passes diagnostics on their end then that is kinda end of story. See if there is any kind of factory reset for the modem/router - and be as patient as you can calling and explaining the problem - worse come to worse buy your own modem router or switch providers.

<font face='Tahoma' size='2'>Hi chaps,

At our company we use the JavaMail API through JNI to send emails externally to customers.

Recently the business has decided that it would be nice to send pound (£) through, however it's not going to plan.

Normally the messages are encoded in 7-bit which would seem to exclude the £ (163), however it seems that it is first converted to a (=80, hex with no ascii correlation) and then to a Euro symbol.

I've tried setting the "allow8bitmime" property in order to enable the SMTP service to support 8-bit encoding, but it's not working AND Microsoft say that our Exchange (v5.5) doesn't support 8-bit MIME types. The odd thing is that sending external emails via Exchange supports the £ with no problems and is read in the mail reader as 8-bit encoded (!).

Has anybody had any experience with issues like this ?

Any reply appreciated.

A:Sending £ signs with JavaMail

nevre had to use a pound sign but here's what you could try

Name code: & pound
Number code: & #163

remove the space between the & an p or # and you get &pound

this is html so your email recipients must have html supported email

I'm having a major problem. I just purchased a new Sony Vaio with Windows XP. I have the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.

My computer ran great for a month or so, but for some mysterious reason, after I get done browsing the internet and I sign off, it signs itself back on. I click cancel and it does it again. The only way I can keep it from signing back on, is to turn off the computer.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Yesterday, my friend was streaming a movie online and I think that may have infected my computer with something. After the movie ended, a pop up came up saying my computer was infected and I needed to purchase something to remove it. I couldn't even go onto the internet due to this so called "virus," so I had to look on my other computer on how to fix this. I entered some registration key to "remove" the virus (I'm pretty sure this was just a scam to get money). After this, I installed Windows Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. They both removed some Trojans and I thought everything was gone, but I just did a McAfee scan and it says I have a suspicious threat with some random website - xdlamfeed.com or something like that... Also, I noticed some problems.

Also, my Security Essentials keeps removing this virus/male ware but it keeps coming up as a threat everyday:

I googled it and other people have been complaining that it messes with google searches as well.
1) While searching, google will redirect to some other site beginning with several random numbers.
This will happen when searching 1/10 times, link starts with this:
2) I cannot open Windows Security Center Service.
3) I cannot change my Windows Firewall settings at all. Says there is an error. - is this due to installing those programs above?

I have done system restore as well, and all of these problems exist. Help please?

I want to display a message to the user when they sign in, whether it be the first login after boot up, or if they've locked their machine and gone to the toilet or whatever.

I've got an .hta file to display a message, but I can't figure out how to trigger it. At first I though scheduled tasks would support it, but it seems it only allows you to trigger when you boot up (and still doesn't seem to work in xp).

Any ideas?

A:Run program when user signs in

Is this Windows XP Pro or Home?
Do you have to use the .hta file for a message?

See this document for a way to do it using the security policy (For Windows XP Pro)
Display a Logon Message

This will display a typed message (nothing fancy) in a dialogue box just after the login screen and just before the desktop displays. The PC will only resume from this state once the user has pressed OK.

I have AOL 9.0 optimized. Never had any issues with it until the last month or two, when every once in awhile it would sign off when I'd download an email attachment. It will start to download, but then just say "Goodbye" and sign off, then restart. I can continue the download, but it sometimes takes 4 or 5 attempts. But, then the file will be corrupted. Starting this week, I can't download any email attachments at all. Does it every time. I tried doing a lite registry sweep, and it worked once, but not since. I think it's a conflict, but I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting. AOL help just told me to re-install, which I already did, to no avail. Any ideas?

A:AOL signs off when downloading email

Hi, Wooden,

I had to use yr name 2 find this.
1) Is your system infected? Have you visited Panda or Trend Micro Housecall 2 make sure it's not???

2) Sounds from other thread that AOL is still your ISP. Wut kind of connection do U have?

3) Go to AOL toolbar, choose "settings" from large menu choose "Personal Storage." In window, use lower arrow to empty your art cache....lower it from 60 where it should B to bottom which will be 35. Log off AOL. Log back on....repeat steps above and then raise the number to 60. then try to send yourself a mail with uploaded attachment and C if you can download it. Actually you ight try this first...then we might know more re when and where the "corruption" occurs.

4) Download and install AOL Computer Checkup. Choose One click fixes component.....go thru all the options. This may help too if other things do not.

5) When you said you reinstalled, did U mean via #4....or via 9.0 CD?

6) Have U checked your browser settings? Run Hijack this?
Opened task Mgr during attempted downloading 2 C wut up? Where is your backup my personal storage set at?

7) If I may suggest...and I osted review of this here; Lnderman follow up and sent beserk with amazement, ywes I was tester for this puppy over months....you might download the free version of Advanced windows Care, configure the settings for your system & ISP connection, run it and C if this fixes things.....it wouldn't surprise me.

I am a running a hp2000 laptop, that when I hit the power button all I get is the led to come on. I don't hear the hard drive or the fan coming on and after about 30 seconds the led shuts off. I have reseated the ram and the hard drive, and tested them in other computers. I checked the power cord and the battery in another laptop and with a multimeter and both tested OK. A couple days ago I got a message at startup that there was some problem with the CPU fan, so I blew the dust out and it seemed to be running good. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting or what I can do to fix the problem. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The Gmer log tells it all, the infection first started when i opened an infected file and it ran a "Yesseaches" browser hijacker, and then my screen blackout so i quickly pulled the power because i thought it was ransomware in the process of encrypting. When i tried to start the computer, it was very slow and it took around 9 reboots to finally get it up.
I have ran Hitmanpro, Adwcleaner, Roguekiller, JRT, Malwarebytes, aswmbr, tdsskiller all without any luck.
The Gmer has removed around 5 hidden .sys files and services that where not there before, and now im just worried about that "hidden mbr code" that was not there before.

Some points for you to keep in mind:

-I cannot see your computer.
-Periodically update me on the condition of your computer, and provide detail in every post.

hey everyone

ive got a 4-5 computer lan in my house being ran off a linksys wireless g router. lately everyone has had problems connecting, either theres no network at all or theres serious problems getting an ip for the computers. when there is a connection it tends to slow down from 54 down to near 0 and sputter out. the same problem is also present on one of the computers thats wired into the router as well, so its not just a wireless problem.

so, i think the routers about to crap out. should i invest in a pre-n or just stick with a linksys? all our hardware is linksys. also, would it really matter if i got a netgear router with linksys wireless cards?

That is often the result of your browser using the wrong character encoding. Remember that computers can't talk in English, and their letters are simply numbers that represent characters. But there are several ways to translate those numbers into letters, and if you pick the wrong one some characters come out wrong.

If you use Mozilla Firefox
Click View
Go to Character Encoding
Select a different option from the one that's checked, and see if that fixes anything. Avoid further submenus, unless you can read nonsense in Chinese type.

In Internet explorer
Go to View
Go to Encoding
Pick a different encoding system.

A:Possible Signs Of Worm Intrusion

Hi ellenh, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. possible signs of worm intrusion of which i am not happy about i unchecked these and for some reason they have been checked again can anybody help me please? You say that you may have have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so I would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. It is not necessary to reboot to get the items to show up in HijackThis. NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again! 1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop. Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop 2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. 3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply. Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to. Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
