Q: spyware remover references

Hello Everyone,

I am utilizing McAfee as my protection of choice and I used to use xofsoftse spyware remover. I was thinking of trying a new spyware remover before I renewed xofsoftse. As part of Comcast internet toolbar it has a free spyware removal tool but I have always heard of utilizing multiple spyware software. Since there are way to many bad ones out there I wanted to hear if anyone has anything great to say about a particular program. Free is always better but a great working program is what im after. In past spyware removers I would scan and get things with one scanner that another would not find and then it would find them again right after deleting the spyware?

I have a 4year (1year hard drive) old dell inspiron 8600, Windows xp sp2, 90gb, (only half full) ,1.7 mhz processor, 512 ram. I generally communicate and photo edit with my computer with some video editing in there also.

Preferred Solution: spyware remover references

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think AVG Anti-Spyware and SuperAntiSpyware Are Good Choices,
AVG also scans for trojans as well as spyware,
and alot of people recommend superantispyware,
both superantispyware and avg anti-spyware have paid and free versions I only have the free versions on both,
the avg anti-spyware starts as a paid version but after 30 days it reverts to the free version.

Hello, I've got an icon on my toolbar that continuously flickers between a red crossbar circle (think Ghostbusters logo w/o the ghost) and a white, circled question mark. Every 2 minutes or so, an info balloon will pop-up from there and give a warning stating "System has detected a number of spyware/adware on your computer, click here to download a solution". When you click the link, it takes you to spylocked.com, which is a site advertising a product called Spylocked, a supposed spyware remover. Even when I attempt to right click the icon, it links to the site, and there's no manual way to get rid of it, even choosing which toolbar icons show up and which to stay hidden. It just stays there, frequently popping up.
I've followed the 5 step instructions, and here are my DSS reports, as well as my Panda Activescan report:

Hi and thanks for taking the time to review my problem.Have blue wallpaper with yellow/blue centered dialog box states "Warning! spyware detected on your computer, install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer"Desktop - properties - wallpaper - show wallpaper name phcpf6j0egen. I left this and did not try to change it.Other symptoms are full page blue screens with lots of dialog about errors telling me to disable BIOS memory options etc. etc. there may be many such pages - each one different describing different errors (they change quickly so I can not write hardly anything down) then it appears to restart my computer - has windows start up screen, but I think its a fake screen - it not really restarting and I can eventually get back to my desktop, the files I have open, or the web browser.I was surfing the internet when it happened and was tweaking my kerio firewall on my three networked computers, I downloaded a pdf file and took a screenshot of my router - I may have deleted these files although they looked pretty benign to me.I ran kaspersky scan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Monday, July 21, 2008 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: Program database last update: Monday, July 21, 2008 21:25:34 Records in database: 981617----------------------------------------------------... I have resolved above problem. Mod may close/delete this post, unless further info would be of assistance to others.
Found a lot of useful info on BC which helped me fix the problem - basically the tool that has seemed to help me the most was Malwarebytes Anti Malware and I now seem to be malware free (need to do some other scans and checks)
Responsible bugs found Rogue.Multiple, Trojan.FakeAlert, Hijack.Wallpaper, Trojan.Agent
Symptoms resolved: (A) Blue Wallpaper with yellow/blue box stating "Warning! spyware detected on your computer Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer"
( random Blue Screens of Death with lots of text describing system errors etc. (fake)
© random windows startup screens appearing to restart computer (fake)
(D) redirect while surfing to pc-scanner-online.com (do not paste this in your browser) pop ups urging me to click dialog box in order to scan my computer for security risk (? attempt to infect my PC with "antivirus 2008" ?
(E) random Black Screens of Death (fake)

Felt real good killing those suckers!

Hey everyone, I heard this website is great to ask question and I got a lot of help from you guys before and I can tell you know your stuff. I'm a new member just signed up because I just got a problem that I don't know how to solve.

I have Windows XP and this is a custom made computer so I don't know if that changes anything with fixing it or not. I was surfing online through some forums and then I got a little screen that popped up from my Avast virus protection and it said it found something. I usually don't read it and I usaully choose delete which worked fine up until now. After clicking on delete it would keep on reappearing saying that it found a virus. So I was guessing it I should continue pressing delete. Then a little program came up and I could tell it was a spyware or a virus so I closed it.

When I saw the name I went to add and remove programs to try and to uninstall it. I clicked on it multiple times to uninstall and it said it was succesfull but it wasn't. My screen then turned blue like the blue screen of death but I could still see the desktop and there was something written in the middle which was "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer" in a box. So I decided to go into the program files and delete this program right away from the source. So I found it and it had a weird name it was like geber gaber. Once I deleted it it didn't look like it was sp... Read more

A:Overrun With "spyware Remover" Ads And Popups

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. Using My Computer, navigate to where you have HijackThis saved.Right-click on the HijackThis.exe file. Select "Rename", call it fluffybunny and press enter.Use fluffybunny.exe from now on.I see you have Viewpoint installed:Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware rather than malware, since it is installed without your approval but doesn't actually spy or do anything "bad". This will soon change, according to this article, which you may want to read: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products. If you do decide to get rid of it, please remove all references to Viewpoint from Add/Remove Programs. While we're there, you're using an outdated version of Java (the latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2), and these can be exploited by malware, so you need to update it as soon as possible. Please update and remove the older versions from your computer. Do the following:Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove ProgramsSearch in the list for all previous installed versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment ...)Select it and click Remove. Then download and install the newest version from here:Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2Then please scan once more with HijackThis and post back the new log. Thanks,Charles

Just picked up a particualrly tricky bit of malware. It's phony anti-spyware. If you explore the scary warnings, it takes you to its home page, programmci.com, where you are asked to buy the fake securtiy software. I only found a little about it during searches. One blog has it up as a fresh post just today.
Any ideas on this one? Is it new?
I'm looking through the other posts and it seems like I'll have to push a number of fixes through and force a repair. It's one that won't let any of my exe files run.
I could easily just reformat this machine. It sits in the back room and uploads weather data. But i like to see if I can beat this stuff. I usually win.

A:Free adware/spyware remover

Hey there TISHAnHOSS, welcome to BC! There are numerous "rogue" anti-malware programs out there. The MO for these rogues is to "find" tons of baddies all over your machine, then charge you to remove them. Sometimes, they even install malware on you computer.Luckily, there are a lot of good free anti-malware programs available to you. Bleeping Computer maintains a list of Freeware Replacements for Common Commercial Apps and at the top of the list are anti-virus, anti-spyware, and other security programs. You can find the list at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...?showtopic=3616 . All the programs listed there are known to be good and clean and offered by legitimate organizations.I would recommend installing an anti-virus program (don't use more than one anti-virus app as they will conflict with each other), one or more anti-spyware/adware programs, and a firewall program. Personally, I use Avast! Antivirus Home, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Comodo Firewall, all of which can be found on the list.Once you've installed these, run scans with each one (except the firewall) in turn. Any issues that you actually have will likely be taken care of. If you have any lingering problems, post a new topic in the appropriate forum for help.

On Dell computer's website, www.dell4me.com/security, Sunbelt Software's "PestPatrol" is endorsed to thwart spyware. Has anyone tested this software? Is it better than using the combination "Adaware" and "Spybot S&D"? After updating and successfully cleaning my system using both lavasoft Adaware and Spybot S&D; I downloaded and ran the free "online PestPatrol scan" and found 96 detected pests.
The Sunbelt software bundle is listed at $45.00?
Is PestPatrol anti-spyware software any good? Strengths? Weaknesses?

Hi, I personally run my security progs with the computer running nothing else. I'll generally set one of them away if I'm away from the comp for any length of time. So I wouldn't recommend doing anything on the comp while security progs are running. I wouldn't run in safe mode unless you already have a problem you can't resolve. I don't think there would be a lot of benefit gained. I think it's always best to quarantine for a while first.

I have run Ad-Aware 2007 and deleted everything it found. I have run AVG Anti-spyware and AVG Anti-virus and they supposedly fixed everything it found. All programs have found many infections, but I am still bombarded with pop-up ads. I have tried the vundo fix and the smitfraud fix, but no help. I can't even type this message without 5 or 6 pop-ups occurring. Please help me. I have included my HJT log.

A:No spyware remover works. Check it out.

Hello Danielle_2008,

While I appreciate what you have done in regard to our instructions, you needed to continue all the way through to Step 5.

We prefer a more comprehensive set of logs to assist in detecting any malware that may be present. As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic (Updated!) IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.

Whenever I run my anti-virus programs, or spyware removal programs, the program freezes and will not finish. I use Avast as my anti-virus. So far, it has done that with Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, and AVG. It will go for about 5 minutes then just freeze. I was running the AVG spyware remover, and a popup came up and stated "Something bad happened in the application. Error diagnostic file save to 'C:\Programfiles\Grisoft\AVG\Anti-Spyware7.5\avgas.err". I click "ok" and the program disappears.

Also, I went to run House Call and the same thing happened, program just disappeared.

I went through the tutorial on this site, and when I typed in "cleanmgr" to run the disk cleanup manager it doesn't come up. The error report pops up instead. It seems the only program to finish is Spybot, but obviously it isn't finding all the problems.

I am running XP and IE version 6.

Any help is appreciated.
