Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

Q: Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Preferred Solution: Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've got a 4 year old Alienware m9700 laptop that has been giving me quite a bit of trouble over the last few months. About three months ago, the touchpad just completely stopped working, and for the last two months the keyboard will lock up at random times. USB keyboar still works, but as I'm in the air/on the go a lot, having to carry around a big ol keyboard is highly unrealistic. The computer is amazing when it works, but it's just getting ridiculous.

On top of that, the wifi cuts in and out as though its searching for other channels (Ive already uninstalled the realtek software so theres no contradicting software issues) and tried switching channels, but thats not my real issue--the KEYBOARD is.

I think I've ruled out it being a hardware issue, as the keyboard works fine for a few minutes and then boom, it just locks up. What makes me think its some sort of software issue is if I go into standby mode or hibernate and come out, it works just fine--until it locks up again, then I have to standby and come out...makes for a real hard time when I'm trying to edit. But heres the real doozy--this problem started a few months ago when I had my old hard drive--but this is a brand new hard drive, with a fresh copy of XP on it...weird, huh?

I've searched high and low for a resolution. They dont make this keyboard anymore, so I'm out of luck in terms of getting a new one. Every "similar" post I've seen has been graphics related ... Read more

Alright I have a unique problem with my keyboard, that seems more or less of a software issue than a hardware issue. For some strange reason, every few minutes my laptop keyboard will stop working for no reason. But when I restart the computer, or go into standby and then turn the computer back on, it works fine. I checked device manager and event viewer and there is nothing to give hint as to why this is happening.

So what gives?! Anyone have any advice?

Running the latest Windows 10 64-bit, all drivers up-to-date according to the Lenovo tools, but the only key that seems to work on the keyboard is the Function Lock key in the upper-left and the Windows-logo key.  All others, when depressed, result in no input to the system. Has anyone else experienced this?  Is this a faulty driver issue in a recent update?  Or is this a hardware failure?

Once I installed Win10, the USB Acer keyboard started malfunctionning (erratic key responses, no responses at all, etc. A reboot of the system settles the problem... for about 10 minutes. I tried the keyboard on other computers: works fine. I even tried an old PS2 keuboard, with the same results. I updated all the available drivers published on the Acer Web site to no avail. A call to the Acer service center resulted with the suggestion that I should revert to Win 7. Unbeleivable !Has anyone encountered a similar problem ? Ps help needed.vital

Hi, I have an old Time laptop (so getting any drivers/chipsets will be a pain) that I'm using as a Home Theatre PC under my TV. I can wake up from standby with its power button, but not from its keyboard. Also, I can't do this using my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Keyboard, connected via USB (laptop doesn't have any PS2 ports).

I want to be albe to keep the laptop lid closed at all times and placed above my VCR, so having to open it every time I want to wake from standby is not ideal.

I've looked at all the APM properties for m/board and keyb but nothing. The BIOS says nothing about power management either.

Running Win XP SP2

Any suggestions? Thanks.

When turned on it goes as far as the Screen that shows " We apologize but windows did not start successfully; a recent hardware or software change might have caused this ...." Then it gives options to strat up like "Safe mode" " Last successfull login.." Start windows normally"
but no mater what choice you make there is no further progress. THe Keboard suddenly goes dead and the mouse stops functioning too.
How do I proceed?
I have tried installing another hard drive and it will not go past the first screen,
I tried reinstalling a windows on the same hard drive but it will not proceed neither

Hi thelastbonbona,

It may not be an issue with the keyboard at all. You may try using a good-known keyboard with the system, if available; will help you to isolate the keyboard as the possible root cause. Alternatively, you may use this keyboard with another system to see if the issue duplicates.

If no extra computer/keyboard is available, you may check the 'keyboard/system' performance in 'Safe mode'. It is a diagnostic mode and may help us isolate if a 'program' is causing interference.

Do reply with the findings; will take it forward from there.

So i have windows ultimate 32 bit, and i noticed this problem. My keyboard randomly, doesnt matter what im doing, stops working. All i hear is a beep and then the keyboard is frozen. Sometimes i can go into on-screen keyboard and press a few buttons and my keyboard will unfreeze, but sometimes i have to restart or put the computer to sleep so it unfreezes. It's highly annoying, because sometimes it freezes after a few key presses, but sometimes it works no-problem. I tried a different keyboard (mine is ps/2), i tried removing drivers and reinstalling them, but nothing seems to work. So anybody, help? Thanks.

A:Keyboard randomly stops working

Hello Jay and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry to hear you're having these issues.

I understand that you already tried a different keyboard on your computer, but did you also try using the problem keyboard on a different computer? Have you tried using a different USB port? I found this previous Forum thread that has some additional suggestions. (Even though it talks about a mouse and keyboard issue, the suggestions are still valid for any USB device.)

Mouse and keyboard randomly stop working

Read other 1 answers

I've already been on a bunch of other threads relating to this issue and I'm really starting to panic.
My laptop is a HP running Windows 7 (I don't know how old it is, it was my brother's before he upgraded and gave it to me). Recently (as in a couple days ago) my keyboard would randomly start cutting out, all keys refusing to work. My mouse would still function
fine (but it's a USB mouse since the trackpad stopped working about a year ago). On the first day I restarted it and it worked for the rest of the day. On the second day it happened again after the first restart, but worked for the rest of the day on the second
restart. On the third day I restarted after uninstalling keyboard drivers, Windows automatically reinstalled when it came back on and it worked the rest of the day. HOWEVER, today, the fourth day, it stopped working very quickly and I had to restart again,
trying the driver fix again.
It always crashes at some point after I log in (so it's never prevented me from typing in my password to log in or anything). Restarting has been working as a temporary fix every time, but only temporary. I have no idea what to do and have no access to a
USB keyboard right now.

For about a week now, the keyboard has just stopped working randomly several times a day and without any pattern that I can see.  Although the PS/2 keyboard keys stop working, the virtual keyboard still works and so does the touch pad/mouse. In order to get the keyboard functioning again I have to restart.  Windows 10 has been installed and working for almost a year (of course with the usual adjustments required after upgrading from Windows 8.1). I have Bitdefender Total Security 2016 and the system is fully updated and patched. I have followed all the instructions/solutions I can find on different forums. These include: virus scansScannowupdating/reinstalling the driverschecked Bios version is up to datechanged Ease of Access keyboard settingstried windows plus spacetried task managertried Windows trouble shootermade a reliability scan (this showed several errors labelled Microsoft.Messaging_8wekyb3d8bbwe!ppleae38af2e007f4358a809ac99a64a67c1 . It is apparently linked to Skype Host). The issue is unresolved (it is only midday  and it has already happened twice today). I see there is a similar post on a forum for Yoga 3 users, but the solution there appears to have been an update for the Yoga 3 system.  If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be very grateful. I have spent ages trying to track down a solution. Thanks, Sek

I've been having a problem for the past couple of weeks where the keyboard suddenly becomes completely unresponsive. It doesn't seem to happen often, but the only way to fix it is restart my computer, which is very annoying. After looking at Event Viewer, it seems this event (Event ID 13) is relevant: " The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly." Any fix for this?  EDIT: Looking around for a bit it seems it's not an all too uncommon issue. Hardware problems?

Since I'm running Windows 7 I thought I'd try to solve this on this forum, although the problem has plagued me all through vista as well but perhaps not nearly as much as it does now in 7.

I have a Microsoft 4000 usb (wired) ergonomic "Natural" keyboard. I'll be on a forum typing up something (or in notepad, or anyplace I could possibly type) and all of a sudden the keyboard will stop responding to any key strokes. The only way to get it back to life is to logout and log back in, then the keyboard is working fine (unplugging it from the usb port works as well, although logging out and in is easier for me).

When this happens, everything else on the computer is working perfectly fine, the mouse, display etc. It's just the keyboard that basically becomes totally inop. It doesn't matter what key I press they don't respond.

It's not a matter of an older keyboard that the wires might have broken or anything like that as this is a brand new keyboard. I've been using these MS 4000 keyboards for a few years now and have to replace them every year or less due to them wearing out from my fast and excessive typing but it doesn't matter, new or old, at some point, sometimes multiple times per day the keyboard stops responding on me.

Any clues as to what might be causing this and more importantly how to prevent it from happening any further?

Sometimes my laptop keyboard will simply stop functioning or have extreme lag. But it's different than the lag we are accustomed too. It's more of a one key takes about 10 minutes to appear and even if i continually press key's, it would not show all the keys pressed, only the first or maybe second one.

There appears to be no apparent pattern to this. It happens with or without battery power attached. It happens in the middle of anything. So, I really am doubtful it's connected to a specific issue or something.

Hi Guys!

My system:
Intel Processor i3 3.4GHZ 3240 ( I bought this one new with 8 months warranty remaining)
Mother board Asus h61m-K (Its also new with 8 months warranty remaining)

Power supply 420W (Used)

After a few days use the Pc used to restart after 5 to 6 hours of working and then everything go again to normal for another 5 hours! I also got the blue screen error of windows a few times!

I figured out that the fan speed of CPU was at normal, I changed it to turbo level ,after that the restarting stopped for a few days but recently it started again randomly now there is no trend it happens randomly. Lately my mouse and keyboard start freezing with numlock light and the laser light of mouse turning off: I plugged them out to a different usb ports but off no use, I have to force restart the pc to make it Normal functioning again!
I am using Windows 7 64 bit, I have changed the windows many time but off no use.Can anyone tell me what is likely to be the problem? I think there is a problem with the supply or the motherboard but dont know how to check it??

Hi all, hope everyone is well.

I wonder if anybody can help. Until recently when I had my Logitach wireless keyboard and mouse plugged in via PS2 connection my XP Pro box went into standby perfectly. Worked like a charm.

However, recently I had cause to plug in the mouse and keyboard via the USB port (for some bizarre reason that I haven't figured I could not get them to work together in the PS2 ports anymore - but are fine in a USB port though - odd) and now XP goes into standby fine BUT all the PCs fans are still purring away as is I think is the HD.

It seems that since I am now on "USB wake up" the PC thinks that it needs to stay powered up. The point of standby for me is to kill the noise and the poswer consumption!

Has anybody seen this before and have any ideas how to remedy? Is this how it's supposed to work - does USB need the power to regognise a wake up call from the keyboard/mouse?

Thanks a lot.

A:Standby Issue (USB keyboard and mouse)

if your fans and HDD are still running, then your PC is not going into stand-by fine.

since they first introduced it, stand-by mode has been known to cause stability issues and system "screw-ups", such as the problem you are having right now. I won't use stand-by mode for this reason

my advice would be:
1. plug your input devices back into the PS2 ports you had them in before
2. run system restore to a date prior to the problem
3. don't use stand-by anymore

good luck

We have Windows 7 64 bit with an Acer older laptop.
We are not sure what we did but our keyboard has changed in that we cannot use Ctrl + Cto copy or Ctrl + V for paste and other functions. Also our mouse pad does not work anymore. We are using an external USB keyboard and it works fine with a USD wireless mouse and sometimes a USB wired mouse which work fine.
My question is what can we do to restore our laptop keyboard?
We do not have or original Windows 7 CD anymore.
We have tried to fix the mouse driver but I think I made it worse.
We have tried to update the HID keyboard device but Windows says it is up-to-date.
Same with PS/2 keyboard device.
Same with the mouse- up-to-date.
Could we hit some key combination that changed the keyboard settings?
We have looked in the Acer PDF but see not solutions.

Hi goodlad,

You should try an external keyboard with the system. If external keyboard works fine then you should consider replacing the internal keyboard.

As due to usage and time keys stops responding. However if the similar issue occurs with the external keyboard then it might be a software related issue.

On this virtual way nobody can say for sure what the problem is but if the internal keyboard is not working properly first step is keyboard replacement. If the problem still persists then troublemaker can be keyboard port or keyboard controller.

As far as I know BIOS has nothing to do with this issue.

ASUS K95VB laptop, Windows 8.1
Occasionally, often after waking from sleep or hibernate modes, but not always, the keyboard stops working. The mouse (USB Logitech) works fine. Programs open are Firefox, Thunderbird and Jarte Notepad, and when I try to write something in them, they go into "Not responding" mode.
However, when I go to other Windows functions, like Run or Search, there the keyboard works just fine.
After restarting the computer everything works again.
Have checked for malware, virus, etc. - nothing obviously wrong.
Any ideas?

That's extremely odd behavior. Did this problem happen suddenly? Do you recall what you did prior to it happening (like opening an e-mail attachment or visiting a new website)? First, before any other troubleshooting, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and run a malware scan (e.g. MalwareBytes). If it's not a virus, it may be due to a fault with the keyboard driver. Perhaps you have an older laptop and a recent Windows update created a conflict? You could also try going to the Device Manager, select your keyboard, and then check to see if there's a driver update.

I have had this problem on and off with this laptop for some time. Sometimes I could fix it with just flipping the laptop all the way over and back a few times and the laptop keyboard would come out of tablet mode and work. You can see for a very few short seconds the keyboard will operate during initial boot process however during the boot process it disables. Now all of the time. Is there a Bios setting anyone knows to turn on permanently? I really hate the tablet mode as it is and certainly can live without it.

Hello there all, I hope you are having a nice day/night while reading my post  Recently Im having a quite uncomfortable problem with my Lenovo. As the title says, it stops running, to be honest, mostly when playing League of Legends. Very rarely while doing other things, like surfing on the web, perhaps more often when playing other games than League It's hard for me to figure up, why does it happen. My laptot is fairly new (4-5 months), and it has not been damaged or awashed by water And there we go to the second problem, which is connecting with WiFi. It just randomly does not show any will to connect with web spots. Sometimes, it works just fine. I installed WiFi/Router drivers, and it hasn't got any better The third, and the last problem is, that my headphones sometimes don't run. Rather randomly, when I plug them in, or when I turn on the computer while they are already plugged If anyone can help me with any of these problems above, I will be very grateful My operating system is Windows 10

Hi, I have this problem, which I also had on a 710-15ISK before I replaced mine with this model due to cracked screen. Intermittently, while "computering", the keyboard will stop working as expected.Only a variety of keys will work, like some mode has been activated by an accidental key press.Like I said, this happened on my previous 710 as well. It's frustrating because I'm learning programming, and the issue doesn't resolve until I sleep the laptop and unsleep it, which makes me believe it isn't some key combination I'm hitting, but rather maybe a jam of the keyboard. The same keys stop working each time, and same for the keys that remain working. If I can if it happens again, I will write down each key working/not working, but until then, does anyone have some insight on this?

Hi! I am experiencing a weird glitch that happens to my laptop keyboard.  Last weekend, I have discovered that only 5 and 6 keys work on the top row number keys of my keyboard. Also, F10, F11, F12, Home key and Delete keys don't work. Other keys are working. I have tried the keys multiple times but the don't register anything on the screen. I have tried booting in my linux system and the problem persists. I have tried multiple reboots, load optimized settings in bios  Upon testing the top number row, I have discovered that pressing 6, 7, and 8 key, simultaneously, registers an "equal sign (=)" on notepad, and 3, 4, and 5 keys registers an F2 equivalent click, which proves that the keys aren't broken.  Yesterday, upon booting up my system, all the keys seem to be perfectly working again.  However, last night (up until now)(out of the blue), the aforementioned keys suddenly didn't work again. Anyone having the same problem? Any solutions, guys? Thank you!

Hi everyone, I bought this laptop about 3 months ago and I'm loving it so far. But every so often the keyboard would just stop working and when I try shutting it off, it would go through the entire shutting off process and the screen goes black but all the lights and fan would still be on. I am then forced to hold the power button down to force it off. When I restart the computer instead, it would take me to the blue screen where it would say "Windows has ran into an unexpected error" then the screen would turn black again and everything else would be on. Anyone have any idea or solution to what's going on? Thanks in advnace!

I got a laptop from work, and it has a very funny keyboard layout. In addition to English and Hebrew letters, some letter keys have numbers on them ('U' has the number 4, 'I' - 5, 'O' - 6 etc). I cannot type any of those letters.... the number keys from 7 to 0 do not produce the characters '&','*','(' or ')' when pressed with Shift held down, but rather behave like function keys or arrow keys.

Any idea how to make this keyboard behave more sensibly?

My friend received a new laptop running windows 8 (acer v5-471).

When the 'w' key is pressed it brings up the search page With settings filter selected (e.g apps, settings, file filters) when shift + w is pressed it prints 'W'.
All other keys work as expected, the keyboard layout is set correctly and no keys are stuck (easy to tell as its backlighted)

Any ideas?

Thanks Rob

Edit: the WindoWs key seems to do the same thing :\

EDIT: Was a hardware problem and the laptop has been returned. Tried a linux live cd and the problem persisted.

Maybe the Keyboard is bad, it does this no matter what program you are in? What if you are typing something and it requires the letter "w"?
