Internet Explorer and SysInternals' Process Explorer

Q: Internet Explorer and SysInternals' Process Explorer

(I'm aware of the SysInternals Forum but I can't seem to get a registration e-mail out of it.)

IE can take A LOT of cpu. So I have long used Process Explorer to see which web sites are associated with the high-cpu instances of IE. (It's not a perfect technique as it does not identify which site is the culprit, but at least it narrows it down.)

But Process Explorer no longer displays the web sites (I guess it was actually displaying the titles of the windows/tabs). Now it shows me only Command Line and Path information. This may have started when not too long ago IE was updated. In any event the IE I am running now is IE10. I thought that maybe Process Explorer needed an update too but that has not helped.

I would gladly dump IE and use Chrome, which tells me exactly which tabs/sites are soaking up huge amounts of cpu, but Chrome (on my system at least) has a huge video problem. FF I don't even want to consider because it's such a disaster on my XP laptop.

So it would be great if I could just get Process Explorer to give me the IE info it used to. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Bob

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer and SysInternals' Process Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Internet Explorer and SysInternals' Process Explorer

The issue is not with Process Explorer but with Internet Explorer. That only way that Process Explorer, or any other program of it's kind, can know which website a browser is displaying is by it's title bar. Since IE10 shows nothing it's title bar, at least in it's default configuration, there is nothing that Process Explorer can do. And since IE handles all tabs under the same process the title wouldn't mean much anyway. The contents of IE tabs is essentially unknowable to Process Explorer.

I don't think there is any way to do what you want with Internet Explorer, or most other browsers either.

Process Explorer v10.06 (dtd 2/22/2006):
Get it here.

An alternative to running as limited user is to instead run only specific Internet-facing applications as a limited user that are at greater risk of compromise, such as IE and Outlook. Microsoft promises this capability in Windows Vista with Protected-Mode IE and User Account Control (UAC), but you can achieve a form of this today on Windows 2000 and higher with the new limited user execution features of Process Explorer and PsExec.

Process Explorer’s Run as Limited User menu item in the File menu opens a dialog that looks like and acts like the standard Windows Run dialog, but that runs the target process without administrative privileges, and PsExec with the –l switch accomplishes the same thing from the command line.

For more information: see Running As Limiited User - The Easy Way
http://www.sysinternals.com/Blog/ (dtd Thursday, March 02, 2006)

and you can get PsExec v1.71, Execute processes with limited-user rights here:

I've identified a series of processes eating 80-100% of my processor time. I've dl'd Process Explorer and am looking it over.

Sadly, I don't really understand what I'm looking at, much beyond the obvious "this process is being run by this program, and you can tell because of the nested tree."

But I get a little lost beyond that. Anyone able to give me a hand up?

It will take some work on your partThe easiest way I've found is to click on File and Save As. It will create a log that you can copy and paste into notepadThen you will need to use the search engine of your choice to research the entriesAs you find out the ones that need to remain, remove them from the list. Leaving you with the questionable ones that you can post and sak others what they are if you cannot find themWe have a file database you can use that list the more popular ones but certainly not all of themhttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/filedb/

Occasionally my IE 11 Process will become suspended. When this happens I can still use the IE window I have open but many other things stop working correctly. I've attached a screen capture from Process Explorer to show you what it looks like. I've noticed several other processes becoming suspended such as ShellExperienceHost, Search and several others. I have no idea why they are becoming suspended. I'm running Windows 10x64 Pro on a Sager NP 7378, i7 4710 processor, 16 GB of RAM...

Any ideas what's causing this?

As soon as I see this message I CTRL-ALT-DEL and see iexplore running as a process - I kill it but it always returns.

Hi all,

First post here, was hoping someone could help me out. My girlfriend?s HSBC account was infiltrated the other day and we have reason to believe that the fraudsters managed to get her details off of my laptop.

When accessing the HSBC log on page from IE an extra box appears that asks for the security number ? apparently this is never asked for in full. When visiting the same page via Firefox the box is no longer there.

Please refer to images on this post:

Also, since this box has appeared my IE crashes from time to time giving me the message ?IE has stopped working?
I have run AVG free and Malwarebytes, both of which give my Windows Vista laptop a clean bill of health.

I can?t seem to find any info through google and was hoping one of you could give me some pointers.

Thank you

A:Internet Explorer - HSBC Fraudsters? Please help - Pre-posting process followed

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi, slight fork of a thread in the anti virus forums below. After loading up Windows 10 (x64 Home), after about 8 minutes I am seeing a background internet explorer process iexplore.exe launch, which then launches up to 200 connections to various ips, some look like possible ad servers akamai, amazon etc. This lasts for about 3 minutes, and will maybe occur every hour or so. I thought I'd disabled all ad options I have seen in Windows 10 options including Cortana, however it seems searchui.exe may be connected to this process. I'd really appreciate if anyone could check for any background internet explorer processes running in Windows 10, either by using something equivalent of Kaspersky network monitor in your anti virus, or a third party app, thanks!

Nice to meet you all

I have perfromed system recovery from my Hard-Drive on my Toshiba Laptop L50-1E8 (which was a refurbished model (I backed up some things from my documents that contained such as word documents and excels)

After hours of updating all the updates from Windows Update (one of the Last being IE11) and installing AVG 2015 professional (trial period) as well as the AVG's browser plugin.

I checked the all processes in my taskmanager to find iexplore.exe (run from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder)

I found this article

Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) Preloads Websites Content in Background to Optimize Performance - AskVG

following the article, I unchecked the "Load sites and content in the background to optimize performance" and that got rid of the i.explore.exe for a while but it came back onto the list of processes of Task Manager.

I have scanned my computer with
Malwarebytes
AVG
MSShield

but found no malware.

I have downgraded IE11 to IE9 (as IE10 seem to do the same) now but still would like my fellow Window7 users is it Normal for Internet Explorer to be this intrusive in the name of "reseaching what we like to browse so that the webpages can be displayed easier"?

I've been using IE6 for far too long and finally decided to download IE8. On a 56k connection, 16 MB took a while, but that was alright.

So I launch the EXE and it goes through the set-up process, but during the installation it says "Downloading updates for Windows Internet Explorer 8...", and is stuck on 'Downloading' in black at the top. It's been like this for the past two hours. Does anyone know exactly what the file it's downloading is, what MB it is, and if it the connection is broken can it be resumed - or does it have to start over from the beginning?

My connection cuts out every 12 hours, so if this is a 150+ MB download and it starts from the beginning every time the program is relaunched, it's doubtful I'm going to be able to download whatever it is. If that's the case, is there anywhere I can download this massive file seperately without having it be handled through the IE8 updater process?

A:Internet Explorer 8 installation process taking forever.

Since you mention 150MB, that's the amount of disc space that must be available, not the update size. Until a SP is available, and depending on when the IE8 was put online any number of updates might be downloading. The connection can be resumed. Keep trying, but the only snag I can see is you don't mention your XP SP. It must be #2 or greater.

Hi,

That takes me straight to my explorer favourites. What I notice is that when I launch that, I get a new explorer.exe thread appear in the task manager. When I close it though, that thread remains active. It's not doing anything, but it's still there. Anyone know why it wouldn't terminate? Is it to do with how I'm launching it (using the shell parameter) ?

Here are some tests I did, in each case I started out with only my main explorer instance (the one that holds the systray, quicklaunch etc).

1. Click my shortcut from quicklaunch shown above.
2. Click the red "X" to close it.

After closing all those explorers, so I was back to having only my main explorer, I did this sequence:

Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

We have no Problem with IE9, IE11, Chrome or FireFox.If we change the tab while loading the page in the IE10 and switch back, everything works fine.It crashes on all Windows 7 Systems tested so far. Seems to be no Policy problem. All Addons disabled, same problemCleared cached Data, same problem
Any idea how to debug this issue?

New dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and al... Hello everyone and thank you for participating in this wonderful site.

My computer is a Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz, Running Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The problem I'm writing about has been there for about a year. All in all it's the same prolem ever since, but every once in a while some detail changes, like a new error message.
Every about 5-15 minutes the Start Menu Taskbar and the desktop icons disappear (Explorer crushes). Most of the times they reappear shortly after, but sometimes they don't, and then I use task manager to run explorer and then they reappear. Yet, sometimes the computer stucks altogether, and I have to restart. In addition to that, many popups open when I surfe the web using Internet Explorer. The popup changes every few days, but in between it's always the same one.
Another point is that while the crushing of explorer can occur anytime, it most often occurs while I open or close Internet Explorer windows.

Sometimes I get an error message, and as I said, they change from time to time. But still, here are 2:

rundll32.exe - Application Error

About a week ago, I turned on my laptop to find that Internet Explorer was freezing and crashing. When it crashed, I wouldn't get the normal Windows error reporting message, but instead Windows Explorer froze and I was forced to restart. When I restarted -- stupidly, more than 10 times in 2 hours -- the first few times, a few ad windows and anti-virus downloader screens popped up. I scanned with Housecall, and an infection with Mal-vundo came up that it couldn't repair. I downloaded SpyBot, AdAware, and AVG free, and not much popped up that I knew how to fix other than a dat file called __c001BA5E, and a few others. I tried to delete these on reboot, and it seemed to work for awhile. Soon enough, though, both explorers were crashing again. I've tried to avoid rebooting, but I can't help it.
