Preferred Solution: installed new sound card now windows sound recorder won't work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ThePRedicate,
Can you see the sound card in the Device Manager in System Properties?

Did this problem start recently or since the installation of XP? Did you get sound at anytime earlier(even on other OSes)?

Hi,

I am super panicked at the moment. The 2-hr meeting recording I made today just will not play. And it turned into some Janet Jackson song? What is this?

Anyone had the same problem?
I recorded it using the Sound Recorder in the laptop.
The file is there, length is correct, just won't play and has this Janet Jackson thing in the properties.

Anyone could help me with this?

Sound in windows has been giving me a hard time lately. I had to restore my registry manually via the Windows Recovery Console recently because Windows kept thinking it was in safe mode, thus preventing a repair installation from continuing. So, after restoring the registry from an earlier part of the day when the issue wasn't a problem, Windows started up fine, and everything was working as it once did. Except for sound.

The volume controls icon does not show in the taskbar. I've gone into Control Panel -> Sounds and Devices and checked the box that is supposed to place the controls in the taskbar, but to no avail. Still doesn't show up. I know that this is usually caused by incorrectly installed sound drivers, but they are installed fine and do not appear in an errored state in the device manager. I've also reinstalled the sound drivers from my motherboard's drivers disc multiple times with no change.

Oddly enough, any sounds that are supposed to be played by Windows do not play. If I open a file in Windows Media Player or in a game, the sound plays perfectly fine.

On top of that, I'm also getting trouble with recording sounds. Not just with a microphone, but even from they stereo mix channel. In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, looking at the Voice tab, the default device for Voice Playback is blank. I set it to Realtek HD Audio Output, but when I press apply, it resets to blank. When I set it to the Realtek Output and go to the 'test hardware' button, I ca... Read more

I have installed Win XP Pro SP2 (had Win 7 installed and couldn't run half my games). Now the games run fine but no sound! I know this is because I'm relying on the on-board sound on the (I have been told by my brother-in-law who used to own the pc!) I have windows 2000 and I just got a microphone.

I recorded some sound with the sound recorder that came with windows, but there was a whole bunch of static.

I tried to fix this by goin under properties and clicking the "convert now" button, and set the quality up to cd quality and it worked, there wasn't any static.

When I exed it out and frcorded some more audio, the static was back and I checked under properties and the quality level had gone back down to the lowest level.

I need to get cd quality to be the default, but every time I close the program it goes right back to the staticy quality.

I would appreciate some help on how I can get the high quality to stay there.

Ever since I got my second Video Card and went SLI I have had crippling sound problems. After playing for a while all sounds get replace with a high pitched squeal. This is only with games, not music (using WMP), DVDs (using WinDVD), and only with my sound card, not the (crappy) onboard sound (which has no problem). Some games may play for three minutes, others for close to fifty before this consistently happens. It seems to be simply subsistuting all sounds with this annoying noise. I quit the game it goes quiet, but music is now affected and DVDs have NO sound. Single GPU works fine (either card, either PCI-E slot), sound card in either PCI slot still causes the problem. I recently got a newer, better sound card but it does the exact same thing. I think it may be either a video card issue, or the motherboard. Is it something to due with the way the video card handles sound? Or the motherboard? HELP!! I really like the improved graphics (on a relative budget) that SLI brings, and don't like being hobbled like this.

Hi! I just installed a new mother board and cpu. Its an ECS 755-A2 mother board with a 3200+ AMD Sempron/64-bit CPU. It's not the best, but i was trying to save money.

Before, I had a soyo and a 2800+ AMD Athlon XP and i had the Sound Blaster Live 5.1. Now with this ECS mb, the sound card doesn't get detected anymore, even in device manager. I downloaded the new driver for the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 from their official website and when I came to install it... it said that there were no Sound Blaster cards detected on my computer even though it was securely pushed in IN a pci slot!!

Then I decided that I don't need sound blaster so i installed the driver for the integrated sound card on my mb (realtek AC-97) and everything LOOKS fine according to their program and the control panel (sound and audio options) but i dont receive any sound from anything at all. I was planning on buying a NEW sound card but then i decided to test this Sound Blaster Live 5.1 on my bro's computer. Ironically, it was detected on his 1.2 ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird and now i'm puzzled as why it wasn't detected on mine.

What solutions have I tried?

I installed numerous drivers for both the sound blaster and the integrated sound card repeatedly and there wasn't any hope.

I re-installed the OS twice (I'm willing to do a third though)

I am so close to having my new audio system established. On the headphone side, all I need to do is place my order. However, I've run into a bit of a snag considering the sound card.

I was originally recommended the Sound Blaster Z to pair with my headphones. Exact card here, the one with the external microphone since I'll need it. Unfortunately, this sound card specifies Windows 7 and 8 as supported operating systems. I asked if it would still work for Vista, but the other forum (headphone forum) seemed to think that it wouldn't, unfortunately. I'm not looking to upgrade my OS. As horrible and clunky as it is, I've made it work for me.

IF it would work with Vista, than just let me know and read no further. If not, I'd love if I could get some recommendations for a comparable card.

I'm looking for the best sound card possible, given my physical and operational specs. I have PCI-E slots 1x and 4x free, and my OS is Windows Vista Ultimate 32x. The card will support both gaming and music, though I'm more concerned with gaming than music at this point. I'm not looking to drop a bundle (the SB-Z was a little on the expensive side) but as high as 70 or 80 is acceptable. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm raring to place my orders, haha.

Occasionally when loading up my notebook I am not able to listen to sound from videos, menu sounds etc. This happens about 1/50 boot-ups. My old computer was much the same. This is bearable, but I have recently started using Ventrilo, the voice chat software, and randomly when using it I lose my sound (that is, all computer sounds). That it has this widespread effect is why I believe it to be the fault of the sound card, instead of the Vent software.

I have reinstalled and attempted to update the drivers to the sound card (see my spec list for the make).

Has anyone encountered this problem, and has it been a hardware or software problem? More importantly, how can I fix it?

Thanks

Greetings all,

Does anyone know what happened to the SOUND RECORDER program that was in the previous versions of Windows?

I was previously on Windows 7 and upgraded to 10 when the notifications came out last month. In W7 I was able to open the SOUND RECORDER program

and then record sounds from the video that was playing through the internet explorer I was using at that time. It did NOT matter which internet explorer I was using, be it IE or CHROME or FIREFOX, etc. I was previously able to open a video, for example youtube, and then record the sound that was playing into the SOUND RECORDER program, and then save that file on my desktop as a WMA.

I have not been able to find the SOUND RECORDER program in Windows 10. Is it gone? I've tried downloading a couple freebie programs that are similar to it, but they're not recording the sounds either. So now I'm thinking maybe Windows 10 bypassed or simply disregarded my sound card altogether, ? Is that a possibility?

Thank you all for your comments, please do not be offended if I do not respond to your questions. I think I've been pretty straight forward in what I'm asking.

Thank you for your help, it's much appreciated.

Hello, and thanks in advance for your time!Earlier this afternoon, I noticed that the sound on my Thinkpad W510 was no longer working. I hadn't really done anything of note with my computer- just updated Adobe Reader to v9.2, that I can think of. When I checked the notification area, I saw this:However, when I right click and click "Playback Devices", I get the following: I immediately checked Device Manager, and found that everything appeared to be fine:I tried uninstalled and reinstalling the Conexant and NVIDIA drivers, as well as updating BIOS. Nothing seems to help, When try to use the mute/volume buttons on the keyboard, the speaker mute button lights up when pressed, but the microphone mute and volume +/- buttons don't appear to do anything. I've also tried plugging in headphones, and that does not make any difference. When I boot from an Ubuntu CD, however, sound works fine, so I don't think that it's a hardware issue.Anything that you folks could do to point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I downloaded at least five sound recorder programs on my new hp notebook computer (All Sound Recorder, Easy Recorder, Advanced MP3 WMA Recoder, etc.) ........

My experience with all of them is the same:

When I try to record from (say) a song that is playing through iTunes --- I hit record and everything looks OK. However, when I go to play it back on itunes or Windows Media player ---- there is no sound.

When attempting playback in iTunes - the little thing moves, to indicate that a recording has taken place and that the song is "playing" -- but there is no sound.

I was able to use a Sound Recorder progam on my old laptop and loved it, and used it frequently. I would greatly appreciate your help.

THANK YOU

Is it possible to record sounds played on a computer using Windows Sound Recorder? For example, sounds from flash movies or other such streaming audio. I think Audacity is recommended as a 3rd party download for this, but I was wondering if it can be done with Sound Recorder.

A:Windows Sound Recorder

Probably not. You would need some app that can record sound as it passes through your sound card, sound capture. In fact, Sound Capture is a good command-line program that will catch these sounds. Total Recall is a popular non-free one.

I have a notebook computer with Windows XP Second E. and Skype. After a recent install of Nero Burn Rom I no longer have the ability to use Skype. Skype gives an error message indicating: "this computer has no sound recording capabilities"
When I open Sound Recorder under Windows Accessories everything is "greyed out" and no buttons function.

My system under My Computer/Device Manager/Sound,Video and Game Controllers indicated that the Driver wdmaud.sys was not functioning and the error message said: "service for this device has been disactivated"

When I go under Control Panel/Sound, Speech and Audio Devices/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio the Sound Recording tab is greyed out and says "No Recording Device"

I can still listen to music however using Itunes and Windows gives the classic start up sounds.

I have "Restored my System" to the install date of Nero without luck. I have uninstalled Nero and I have attempted to fix the problem with a program called RegCure. Nothing has helped.

Is there any way to correct the problem without having to reformat and reinstall Windows?
Thanks

I just got this Dell Optiplex 760 tower with Windows 7 Pro OS. On my previous computer, I had XP, and I configured the Free Sound Recorder from CNET.com. It worked wonderfully - anything coming through the system it could record. Now, I'm seeing on this that there are only TWO (2) recording inputs - the microphone and line in, so free sound recorder doesn't work on this (as it can't detect, apparently, the sound card).

My Question: Does this computer even have a SOUND CARD and, if so, is it possible for me to configure it so that I can get Free Sound Recorder? This really is an excellent recording program and so easy to use. (If anyone knows one better than this, would you please let me know?). Thanks for ANY help whatsoever you can offer me.

A:SOUND RECORDER Problem with Windows 7 Pro

You need the "System Mixer" to be able to record streaming audio from the internet. It may or may not have this as some new PC's (all makes, not just Dell) do not have this option.

To see if you have the System Mixer (may be called Stereo Mixer on some), go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Sound Panel click on the Recording Tab. If the System Mixer is listed, enable it if it's not enabled and then set this as the Default Playback device. If the System Mixer is not listed, RIGHT click in a blank area on this panel and then check to show both disabled and disconnected devices. If the System Mixer shows up you can enable/select it as the Default playback device. If it is not available, you can try the Dell downloads to see if there is an updated sound driver. You must use the Dell sound driver as non-Dell, in most cases, either does not work or does not work correctly. The Dell downloads are at www.support.dell.com you can access the downloads via your service tag number (preferred) or just by the model type and number.

For a recording program, I prefer the very popular "Audacity" recording program. Download the "beta" version for Win 7 systems. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I have used copy "%temp%\ART*.*" "%userprofile%\documents" at the command line to retrieve the file after the computer booted up. There was no file found. I found the copy "%temp%\ART*.*" "%userprofile%\documents" on this post:

[SOLVED] Soundrecorder.exe Froze While Saving - Where is file???

Is there away to find the recording? It seems the sound recorder will temporarily store the recording. Does the Windows sound recorder permanently store files even if a recording is interrupted?

Anyone have an idea?

I've been studying the new (to me) m4a file extension. I understand it's the new international standard. However my Windows Sound Recorder won't open this file type. I want to open it here, as opposed to Real player, etc, because I want to manipulate it a bit. Do I need to update/upgrade my sound recorder?

Thoughts?

A:Windows Sound Recorder and M4a files

Windows sound recorder won't play .m4a files, it only plays .wav files.
You could convert the .m4a file to something else, .wav even if you particularly want to play with it in sound recorder, it'll probably end up being quite a big file in .wav format. I also think there are better tools out there for playing around with music than sound recorder. You'll probably get more software options if it were an .mp3 file. If you have Nero, it will encode that type of file to mp3, so will the free Itunes player I believe.

I have read many of the threads a search for 'Sound Recorder' reveals but I am left with questions about the actual capabilities of this software. Or the use of it.

The 'Help' option seems to suggest two options in terms of it's use. The first being:

"Recording and playing sounds by using Sound Recorder
You can use Sound Recorder to record, mix, play, and edit sounds. You can also link sounds to or insert sounds into a document.

To use Sound Recorder, you must have a sound card and speakers on your computer. If you want to record sound, you also need a microphone."

The last sentence "If you want to record sound..." maybe misleading. Under

"To record a sound

Make sure you have an audio input device connected to your computer.
Click the File menu, and then click New.
To begin recording, click .
To stop recording, click .
On the File menu, click Save As."

This appears to add a possibilitity of not only using a microphone but also a line input device (eg a cable from a sound source such as an external player -a cassette player comes to mind).

I find it confusing when confronted by the wish to record a sound from an input source the length of which may be as much as, say 30mins. The values appearing in the GUI, to the left "Position" and to the right "Length" are seemingly independant of user input. In order to make a recording of 30mins it seems[/] necessary to hover over the 'Record... Read more

Windows Sound Recorder can record only one minute of sound!

Download and use the free Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Of course you have to connect a microphone or another audio devoce to the audio-in slot in the back of your PC. All modern PC have that.

I use windows sound recorder, its easiest to use for me.. and it's free..

For some reason when I formatted this computer, it did not put it on here. Does anyone know if there is somewhere I can download that, or tell me where to locate it on the Windows XP CD? I cannot locate it on my CD.

Or, if you know of any free sound recording programs I am open to suggestions.

Thanks.

A:Windows Sound Recorder Missing

The Windows recorder is pretty limited in what it can do so I would get Audacity, a freeware audio recorder/editor.

Hello,
I used my Windows sound recorder (Microsoft v 5.1 sp2) the other day (sadly), and now CD's played in or burned in the CDRW drive sound garbled and cracking or slow. Used Win media and I-Tunes to burn with same result. Music on the hard drive sounds fine. I can slow-down a CD's play speed as it's going by using the Win sound rec program settings. I don't get the relationship but I had no problem till I used the recorder. Recorder has slow-down setting but no reset, speed-up does nothing. Tried System Restore. Have installed/reinstalled recorder and Win media player 10. Still have drive problems with recorder deleted. Drivers look OK for CDRW, tried to update them but computer found no updates. HP tech support had a few ideas but no solutions. Thanks for any help. Gonz

After spending about 2 fruitless hours trying to find out why my Windows 7 Home Premium was telling me I did not have an sudio device in my system and could not therefore record sounds, I found this in a Vista forum. It seems that the sound recorder is disabled in Windows 7 and the information needed to enable it is hidden!

Read here:

But, if you try the same trick with Windows Vista, you won't see an option for Wave Out Mix. It's not that the option's been left out of Vista, Microsoft just decided to hide it. Media Center Show podcast producer Ian Dixon has the instructions for enabling Wave Out recording:
Select sound from the control panel.
Select the recording tab.
Right click on the background of the tab and choose "show disabled devices."
Right click on Wave Out Mix and click enable.
Now it should work the same way as Wave Out Mix in Windows XP, allowing you to record any sound your computer makes

Seems a bit daft to me. I was assuming that my sound card had packed up.
