Jiggly scrollbars in IE and Firefox -- a symptom or not?[Moved from Gen Sec]

Q: Jiggly scrollbars in IE and Firefox -- a symptom or not?[Moved from Gen Sec]

I see this on my XP laptop from time to time. The scrollbars jiggle around and won't stay still, making it annoying to try to read a page that is going up and down. It eventually settles down after awhile.

Is this definitely a symptom of infection? I scan the hell out of this thing. I have McAfee anti-virus and anti-spyware on it fully updated and scanning 3 times a week, and also scan using BitDefender and TrendMicro online scans now and again (each once within past 2 wks). And further, I also scan from time to time using updated Ad-Aware, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware, SpywareDoctor.

Is the occassional jigglyness normal? Does it happen on clean machines? If so, I won't worry. For the moment, I worry a bit.

Any info very appreciated.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Jiggly scrollbars in IE and Firefox -- a symptom or not?[Moved from Gen Sec]

Hi

Is it the scrollbars or is it your mouse? I'm not immediately aware of an infection that will cause those symptoms, but it's still a possibility. However, I would check things like your OS - is it patched up to date, are all your hardware drivers up to date, any errors showing up in Event Viewer, that kind of thing.

Firefox has been freezing up on me, and when I close it down, I get a bluescreen error. It also happens a lot of the time when I close Firefox down normally. This was happening before I updated to the latest version of FF. I am running Windows XP, and have recently started using ZoneAlarm and Avast on my system.

Hi,

Can you give us the error in full that you are getting. Also, I would check and make sure that ZoneAlarm and Avast are allowing FF to connect to the internet.

I don't know if my problem is Firefox or WordPress but I thought I'd try here first.
I use WordPress to publish articles and usually copy and paste from the finished article in the Articles forum to WordPress but since I reinstalled Win 7 this no longer works as paste is no longer an option when I right click in WordPress, or at least in the particular part that I need it to. I can, however, do it in Internet Explorer, but images aren't copied over, which they used to be. I've tried all the usual things like clearing the cache, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Is this Win 7 or Firefox at fault? Moved from Mozilla/Firefox browsers

Hi,
I am using Win-7 too but I haven't used IE. So my suggestion is to, try another browser for the same purpose and then see the effects (I feel firefox is well suited for the purpose). If you are getting same problems then, you are missing with some features of Win-7 otherwise, it is the website issue.

Dear BleepingComputer folk,

My laptop is running Firefox 40.0.3 under Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

The Problem

Two nights ago my browser (then Firefox 40.0.2) started opening some webpages extremely slowly, simply refusing to open others and producing a "This document has been moved here" message for others (see below screenshot - the link would appear to go to whatever I searched for, but I never clicked it).

These various problems were affecting familiar websites that I have bookmarked and regularly open, such as Facebook.  This seemed to be in some way related to the cache, as it was not affecting new URLs that I had not visited previously during that browsing session.

In addition, when using Google Toolbar (but not https://www.google.co.uk/ , which appeared fully functional) to search for anything I would receive the same: "This document has been moved here", but with an additional "302 Moved" message.

Does anyone know what rules IE uses to determine the width of tables when mixing percentages with pixel values. Also does anyone know why horizontal scrollbars sometimes appear on pages that are laid out inside a fixed width table, even though the width of the table is well within the maximised window size, even with vertical scrollbars visible?

I can't supply the code for the frameset used to display the html pages, but can supply two pages - one where scrollbars appear, and one where they don't - within the frame.

A:Scrollbars and IE

When mixing percentages and set pixel widths, the set pixel widths are evaluated first, and the percentages apply to the remaining real estate on the screen. All percentages MUST add up to exactly 100% or you will get unexpected results.

Let us see the code for your pages (attach it to your next post), and we'll tell you why you are getting the horizontal scroll bars. There is certainly an explanation for it.

Richard

I am currently updating a website, and the thought of a graphical scrollbar came to mind. I find the Colored Scrollbars so bland, boring. Does anybody know if it is possible to make a custom graphical scrollbar? I mean using standard JavaScript or HTML. Any links would be appreciated if available. Thanks!

A:Graphical Scrollbars?

You can change the colors with style sheets, but I do not believe that there is any code to change the face of the screollbar to a graphic. I used to have a program that would change the toolbar to have a graphic as a background, but it is an app that runs on the client side.

Hi,

The scrollbars in all windows on my PC (Windows XP SP2) move up and down constantly by themselves as if someone is taking control of my PC and moves the scrollbar. It happens to all applications that have scrollbars: IE, Firefox, Excel, Word, even in Control Panel.

This happens even if my PC is not connected to the network.
It also happens when Windows is in safe mode.

Anyone has an idea what it is?

I ran the latest versions of Ad-Aware, Hijackthis, Spybot and Spyware Doctor but the problem is still there.

TIA,

Why is it that with one theme on Thunderbird 14, I have to restart Thunderbird after launching for the first time after a boot before I see scrollbars (unless I hover over the thumb)? The same code can be present in a similar theme for Firefox, and that problem is not occurring with Firefox 14.0.1.

Why do some themes for Firefox not show any scrollbar or only part of a scrollbar the first time launched after a reboot, but others have no problem? The scrollbar looks fine if Firefox is restarted. What code should be present and what should not be present in the scrollbar.css file?

Hi,

With the advent of tablet PC's with touchscreens, I (and surely many others) have noticed that for left-handed users, scrolling can be really annoying at times. Seeing as scrollbars are almost always on the right-hand side, the left hand covers the scrolling text, rendering it unreadable. Since I am an experienced Windows programmer, I know that it is possible to place the scrollbars on the left-hand side using a style called SBS_LEFTALIGN. I have heard that they are also set on the left side if the OS uses a language which is read from right to left. This makes me wonder whether it would be possible to make Windows (7, in my case) always display the scrollbars on the left side on demand? Obviously it should be possible, I just don't know how and a Google search has led me to believe that not many people do...

Don't know if anyone can help, but hope someone can offer suggestion.

I have a website and the index page has a 'drop-down' menu (for various pages on the site) where visitors can click and go to other pages on the site.

When I view the INDEX page in IE6, the 'drop-down' menu appears in the center of the page, where we want it to appear.

However, when we view the INDEX page in Firefox, the 'drop-down' menu appears on the left side of the page.

Would anyone know what we might have to do (correct) to make the 'drop-down' menu on the INDEX page appear in the center of page when viewed on Firefox?

Here is the beginning part of the HTML for the 'drop-down' menu:

<P ALIGN=CENTER>
<SCRIPT language=JavaScript>
function formHandler(){
var URL = document.form.mysites.options
[document.form.mysites.selectedIndex].value;
parent.location.href = URL;
}
</SCRIPT>
<P align=center>
<FORM name=form><SELECT onchange=formHandler() size=1 name=mysites> <OPTION value="" selected>My Pages 2-28
<OPTION value=http://www.XXXXX.com/XXXXX/Page2.html>Page 2
<OPTION value=http://www.XXXXX.com/XXXXX/Page3.html>Page 3
etc.......

A:Viewing in Firefox vs IE6 [moved to Web Design]

We need to see the site to work out problems such as these.

At a glance of the snippet of code you have provided, I would guess its to do with firefox's defualt values compared to IE. Using <p> tags for a layout element such as a menu isn't a great idea.

If you show us the site I can do some tests and try to find the problem.

Hello,

When i have an open window with scrollbars (eg the My computer screen), the scrollbars do automatically scroll down, and when i scroll up, they scroll down again. Same kind of problem occurs in Firefox, when typing something in a form (eg the google search field), my editor/type thingy, you know, the '|' thing, automatically moves to the right, and keeps moving. So, basically, it impossible for me to open My document etc, because immediately it scrolls down.
*It seems that the right arrow key is pressed all the time*

My first thought was that my keyboard was jamming somehow, however, after cleaing the right arrow key the problem still existed. Then I tried to remove the keyboard, but the problem didnt go away.
After that I run some virus scan/malware scans. (McAfee, MBAM, AVAST).
This way i removed some virusses and trojans, but my initial problem wasnt solved at all. Then I tried to run a Malware/virus scan in Vista *i have a dual boot config*. And then I discovered I had the same problems in vista.

Then I downloaded Zone Alarm security Suite and run a rootkit scan This gave me a amazing number of infections: 32002..... They all were of the same 'type' HiddenObject.Multi.Generic, and zonealarm had some problems removing/repairing them.

Then I ran Vista in SafeMode and had same problems with scrolling
However, when running w7 in safe mode, I can work normally and i dont seem to have these problems......

Hi
In response to Dan's (dtae) posting entitled "sponsored links" on left in Firefox" I too have just got this infuriating problem.
The sponsored links on the left are not solely Google related nor it would seem solely Firefox related!!!
In Firefox the left links are present in a Google or Yahoo search.
They are not present when using IE or Safari.
However, they are also NOT present in Firefox when using the Google related search 'Locate Me'.
I have also run 'CustomizeGoogle' in Firefox and this does not touch these particular links.
I have run various malware scans and nothing has been thrown up. Nor has my constantly running PCGuard found anything!
I will keep an eye on Dan's posting and hope the above info will help.

A:IE7 freezes on loading yahoo.com, but not firefox [Moved from IE]

Well I went into safe mode and loaded the site up just fine, then in IE7-it just finally loaded up.(that was a couple days ago).
But now sometimes I'll find a few random sites where it freezes up in IE7 and when I go into safe mode and load it up, it seems to fix it in Normal mode.

PC World.com, also gave me that. And a link inside PC world, did the same thing. Then I went into Safe mode again, then normal mode again and that loaded, from being froze too.

Thing is I keep finding sites where it will freeze on me, but I've been using my parents IE7 as well on those same site and their browser never froze once, and this computer has been infected before once (their computer), but my computer is CLEAN. I even have uniblue registry booster to scan my computer as well (note that I put this on after having these IE7 problems).

I have also reformatted my hard drive, just 12 hours after my first post, but this problem came back. I'm really clueless as to what's going on, or if I happen to have a very stealthy virus (have 2 anti-viruses, 1 anti-spyware program running on my computer all the time). Help Me!

I set up Firefox Sync Bookmarks on my PC where and how do I get my Bookmarks which are being synced and saved ?

A:Firefox Sync Bookmarks? (Moved from Windows 10 forum)

The purpose of the Firefox sync feature is to allow another device (PC - Phone - etc) that has Firefox installed the ability to sync the bookmarks, history etc to itself. For example. I have a Desktop PC, A laptop PC and a Android Smart Phone. Each of these devices have FireFox installed. Each of the devices are sync'd together. So if I save a bookmark on my PC, I can then use Firefox on my Smart phone and the bookmark will appear there and can be used by FireFox.

Its not really a backup. It just makes what ever your syncing available on all devices that use FireFox.

Last night a balloon popped up stating that the pc was infected (the balloon came from the security sheild in the quick lanch tray). I knew this was fake so I didn't click on. Still a bunch of problems occured. The desk top changed into a warning that I needed to get virus protection. That went away after restarting. However now I cannot get symantec to start. Firefox crashes as soon as I click on it. I am forced to use explorer. Google has been hijacked. The links redirect to nuisance sites. The only thing protecting the pc right now is spybot. I am running windows xp.

Hi, I have a problem displaying some webpages correctly with Internet Explorer 8, including this sites' pages. The other sites is Youtube, Yahoo mail, and some others. All displays a horizontal scrollbar besides the usual vertical scrollbar.

It seems this problem showed up some months ago, and I do malware scans quite often. Because of this I don't think the problem lies there.

My screen is fixed at 1024 x 768, because most things are displayed best that way I think, the other settings didn't show items at such a good way.

The problem is that I use IE8 most for different reasons, and will not be able to change for a while, Chrome, Firefox, Opera does not show this problem when I tested those on the websites, sometimes not even a vertical scrollbar was needed at all...

Thanks for any help!

This is carry on from a problem i was having with a long pause between post and loading - http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/680047-pause-between-post-loading-screen.html

experienced something else just then when i turned my pc on.

firstly i turned it on and nothing was happening on the monitor... i kept turning the monitor on and off and then after about 30sec -1min i heard a beap from the machine (the one you usually here when it starts up) and then it started...?

secondly, after that i shutdown and then restarted to see if it would do it again... this time the normal beep happened on time and then started up... it went past the post screen and then the windows loading screen started to fade in and then stopped half way, so you could barely see it on the screen... stayed like that for quite a while before it continued to come clear and then the bars started scrolling...?

what on earth is the deal with this PC!!!

When I'm at a search engine and am looking for images, Firefox automatically resizes large images which I don't want it to do. When I changed the setting at about:config to set this to "false," it made no difference. Now I'm at a loss.

Help!

If you are looking at a page of search results, it may be that the search engine is sending scaled down versions of the found images. What search engine are you using?

Only IE works now, when i click on mozilla, it says, "This application has failed to start because plds4.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

And i have tried uninstalling, and downloading and installing again.. but the same exact thing is happening

Me again!

I have a line chart in Excel (not area!). Just two lines zig zagging along. I need the area between the two to be coloured in. But just that area. How would I go about doing that?

Also! How would I go about adding a scrollbar to it, so that I can only see five points on the x axis at a time?

Thanks a million!

Hello out there. My computer has had one weird thing happening to it lately, and I'm hoping someone can help.

A random task pops into my taskbar, with the tiny icon showing the white box with the blue strip on top of it. It only sits there for about a second or two, and is gone too quickly before I can hit ctrl+alt+del and see what the heck is going on. Even when I leave the Task Manager open, I can't seem to catch what the heck it is before it's gone.

The task appears twice every hour or so, maybe more, I'm not really sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First post so if I'm in the wrong place forgive me. And above all "Thank you" in advance. Programs stop responding, can't update drivers, Prob reports and solutions doesn't work, windows update doesn't work, event viewer has a task image corrupt error(something to do with WMI), But first of all the, not responding thing is also a runs only one time deal. I can install a program(mainly anti-virus or malware programs) run it once but the next time it either freezes, doesn't respond, or yes, even dissappeared. No way to do system recovery because my hidden drive or what ever it is is also missing and my CD Rom drime is no longer recog. Guys I'm at wits end and so is Gateway. Help me please!!

A:Not responding is just one symptom

Hello RngrMark,These issues are possibly related to the infection you are experiencing and which you posted about here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/227578/w32virutasc/Because you have this log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already ... Read more

The services.exe file has been blowing-up to ridiculously large (2G) Memory usage/VM Size every time I start my 4+ yr old pc (running XP). While ramping up and back down over a ten minute span, it virtually freezes up all other activity. I noticed this two months ago. In the last couple days it has been preventing my anti-virus from loading and shutting down my computer before stabilizing at "normal" Mem usage/VM size. (Today, in an effort to back-up files I had to re-boot 4 times before my system stayed powered up. )

In the last ten days I started getting other viral activity: Task bar is hijacked (turning grey/white from normal blue) after start-up; Web search results are being redirected; Most audio functions have been crippled. I hear system sounds only; Spoolsv.exe Mem Usage/VM size now randomly spiking and freezing up other applications until I go into Win Task Mgr and kill it (temporarily suspending my ability to print)

I'm here to attempt virus removal but am seriously considering wiping hard drive clean and reinstalling windows (from partition, though I should have access to a Windows Boot disc). Would value your advice on pro's & con's of re-install vs virus/malware removal.
