File(s)deletion

Q: File(s)deletion

I notice in my Windows Folder I have several "KB......Log" messages. Can I safely delete these messages? The $NTUninstall type messages I was told could be deleted as long as I had no need to uninstall any recent updates. Thanks for any help on this

Preferred Solution: File(s)deletion

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

Those files are associated with windows updates. They can be deleted, but it will make uninstalling a windows update hotfix very difficult in the future.

I have roughly 1,000 files on a directory. I have a text file with about 150 names of files in that directory. I want to delete all of the 150 files that are listed in the text file.
Example:

Text file contains

File199
File203
File308
and so on

The directory has File1 all the way to File1000.

I don't want to manually go through 1,000 files to see if they are in the text file to delete them. I'm sure there is a really easy way to do this, maybe a program that can do it, or a simple command in ms dos?

Thanks.

Hi All

I am an old dog, computers are futuristic so to some I may seem dumb but please bear with me....
I have a laptop, and a file named 1.tmp has appeared (how or why I do not know) in my c/windows/system32 folder that throws up an error message window saying it cannot find the program to run the tmp file, and that appears on my screen every time I log on.

So; I thought I could simply go into the sys32 folder and delete the 1.tmp file by putting it in the trash can, as it obviously does not belong there....BUT it will not let me, if I try I get an error message telling me I do not have access or the disc is full even when I use the administrator level......so now I am completely at a loss and I do not understand.
I appreciate the sys32 is a windows folder but surely if some programme put the tmp folder in there then surely I should be able to delete it........

Can anybody show me a step by step way of deleteing it or do I have to forever get this error window every time I log on????

I have been lurking at bleepingcomputer for years, and the excellent info here has helped me solve a number of issues on my computers in the past. But this is the first time that I have not been able to find a solution here without actually asking a question, so here goes:

I have an install of XP Home Service Pack 3 running on a Dell D630 laptop, with the latest avast! Internet Security. Most everything works as it should, with no speed problems, suspicious network activity or difficulty running programs. However, recently I lost the ability to move or delete files in all folders on the hard drive. I can move and delete in Safe Mode, but have no control in normal mode. In normal mode I can open, create or modify files without a problem using a variety of programs, just not move or delete. The error I get is the 'Access Is Denied, Check to See if Hard Drive is Full Or Write Protected, and File Is Not In Use' message.

Also Microsoft update and Firefox update do not work, but avast and Malwarebytes do.

My logon has administrator status, and I have confirmed that I have ownership of the files, either as a user or administrator. I have tried reestablishing ownership through safe mode just to be sure. Suspecting my user profile to be corrupt, I have created a fresh one with the same results. I have run all the scans from avast, Malwarebytes, and MS Safety Scanner with no threats found.

I'm not sure where to proceed from here. Any help would be greatly ... Read more

Hey,
So, some time back, I was having trouble deleting some iso.'s. The machine kept telling me that the iso was open in the system. I forget who, but one forum member suggested I use FileAssassin. It worked. I now have some more to delete and when I use FileAssassin it tells me that it has closed the process. So far, so good. But when I then try to delete the item in 'Downloads', it tells me the process is still open!
Instead of suggesting another app, I would really like someone to explain what exactly is happening. What is it that is causing this? And how do I remedy the situation?
As usual, I would appreciate any info you would like to share. Thanks.

Somehow I unknowingly downloaded a media file that has an .asf file extension.
I am at my wits end - the file will not open nor can I delete it. A window opens when I try to delete it and it hangs for hours. In desperation I tried moving it to the recycle bin and after many hours it appeared there. Now I have the same issue - it refuses to delete and since it is in the recycle bin I have been unable to access it with Process Explorer or Unlocker. I am so far unsuccessful in moving it from the recycle bin to the desktop so it will be accessible.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

Using Windows XP Pro, fully patched, on 2.8GHZ PIV, 512 Ram 120GB HDD

I have several questions.

1. Frequently I go to the 'Local Settings/Temp' folder in my user folder to delete the files there, as I have found that Disk Cleanup doesn't seem to know about that folder, and doesn't clean it up.
Q: Is there any way to add that location to Disk Cleanup's list of areas to clean out?

2. Many times when I go to the folder mentioned above, I want to highlight all of the files in the folder, and mass delete them. Naturally there are always a few which are "in use" and so the delete routine fails as soon as it reaches one of the "in use" files, and one has to then try and work around those.
Q: Is there a way to select a mass of files for deletion, and to have it simply ignore files in use, but continue and delete all of the rest of the files selected that are NOT in use?

Alternatively, is there a utility (preferrably freeware) which is available which will allow the selection of a group of files for deletion, and delete all possible files in the group, ignoring those which are "in use"?

3. Finally, is there an available utility, either in the OS, or other, which will allow one to select a file which is marked "in use" (as per above), and then target or identify the program or process which is "using" that file?

Thanks for your help

Hey all.

I'm trying to cull a folder full of pictures. When I select maybe 11 or 12 pictures and delete them, they delete okay but then a green progress meter starts running across the location bar and I have to wait for it to finish before I can do anything else. It's taking forever.

I read some articles online that said disabling Remote Differential Compression will speed up copying and deleting of files in Vista. So I found the setting and unticked the box. A dialog opened with a progress meter and a message that said "This may take several minutes." So I waited and waited, about 15 minutes and nothing happened. There was no progress on the meter either. Every so often I would see activity on the processor light like it was doing something but not sure what. So has anyone ever done this and know how long it takes, and will it actually speed things up?

Thanks

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file, 50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it, I get the message
"cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied"

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not
currently in use.

While researching this on this forum I noticed a thread about the same problem, the advice given was" right click the file, choose "security" tab, then make sure about ownership, the problem is that, there is no security tab, at that point I'm stuck. I'd really like to get my 50 gig back, can anybody help?

Hi guys,

My customer is trying to delete a game mod file that
he named "bad week no. 2" from a directory in program files. everytime we try to delete it we get a "disk is full" error... Its like the PC is trying to delete from a CD-ROM. The file has no postfix name (I.E. ".ini"), it just shows up as a "file" designation. It also will not open in notepad.

He has XP home and we have been able to delete other files in the directory. We also tried DOS method (with explorer.exe terminated) with no luck. The PC has not been updated from SP1 and has not been used at all on the internet so there are no virus issues.

Im wondering if the name has created some sort of a file-locking behaivior or if the RAID striping hardware is failing.

Thanks a lot guys.

Whenever I try to move a file to the recycle bin of any size it locks up my computer and takes about 20 seconds to move it successfully. Then again when I empty the recycle bin again another 20 second wait. It treats an empty file like it was a 20 GB monster file.

Another symptom is that it takes a while to rename files. For instance if I renamed a file I would type in the new name and hit enter, then it would lock everything up for about....yup, 20 seconds.

I've ran into this problem before and it was solved really simply with a minor solution I was able to do myself. This also has nothing to do with a full recycle bin or other minor things, I am computer savvy and I keep my system in excellent condition.

I deleted files from system32 by accident and now my laptop will not boot, my friend lent me a windows 7 ultimate disc so that I could restore the missing files, it did not work. So I downloaded, on another system, a windows 7 64bit recovery disc and it seemed to work but the system does not say the error has been fixed it just continues to say "setup is starting (or) loading services" but it never gets any further. I am at my wits end, please any help appreciated, step by step by step guides welcome, links, whatever you think will work, i'm open to suggestions. A.S.A.P thanks.
Also, I will try to answer as best I can any questions.

A:[SOLVED] Accidental File Deletion

Beats me how anyone can delete stuff by accident from the System32 folder, considering you should have no need to delete anything in there at all.

When you tried a 64-bit repair disc, I assume your Windows 7 is 64-bit, right?
(A 64-bit Windows repair disc won't repair 32-bit Windows because the system files are different).

Your laptop should have a hidden factory recovery partition which you should be able to invoke by pressing one of the 'F' keys as soon as the laptop is fired up. I can't say which specific key 'cos it varies according to make & model, but try F3.

A:Left over program file deletion

I think what you need is CCleaner

which has an "Issues" tab,or RegscrubXP which is reg cleaner.

Microsoft makes Windows Installer Cleanup Utility which is fairly limited in what it can do.

Is is safe to remove files from:
"Document and Settings/HP Administrator/Local Settings/Temp"

Also I get an error relationg to tha SPA.exe file when updating Norton. Norton people don' have a clue about my issue (surprise) so I found three spa.exe files in the above temp file.

Also, I posted this problem before and some thought it was a malware but I ran three spybot type progmams plus my Norton IS and no problems were found. Problem is a large black dos command type box is popping up all the time, about avery 30 to 1 min or so.

Also, when I try to go to some web sites I get a low memory error but usually goes a way in a minute or so. Never had that before and I check memory and can't find the problem.

Wish I knew more.

Bruce

A:Solved: Temporary File deletion

This is sort of a duplicate of this one

Leave the temp files alone until your HJT log has been reviewed. SPA.exe "may" give some clues.
The low memory error is almost always a sign of malware infection.

I recommend you mark this thread as solved (thread tools top) and carry on any other questions in the other thread.

Hey all,

I do video reviews for youtube, and whenever i take a video, I move it to my "Pictures" folder on my computer. The file is 836 MB and is 13:41 minutes long. My issue is, now I want to delete it off my comp. Here are the issues that it has;

-Cannot move to recycle bin
-Cannot rename
-Cannot move to a flash drive or back to camera

I downloaded a program knwon as "MoveOnBoot" to try and delete it, but the program became non responsive when I hit "start"

I can still view the video and watch it, and it appears in my pictures folder, but i can't do anything to it other than that. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi folks,

Question: Is Revo a good uninstaller program, in you good folks' opinions? Also, how often does it find and bold stuff from the registry that is associated with the deleted program but that the user should NOT delete?

That leads me to my next question: If, for instance, I'm trying to uninstall something like Seagate Dashboard, and it finds something in the registry that is related to Seagate Dashboard, how likely is it that deleting a registry entry that has Seagate Dashboard's name in it (or only showed up after I installed Seagate Dashboard) would actually harm my computer somehow? And can someone explain to me why and how it could harm my computer (briefly if you like, or be detailed if you'd rather; I love learning!)?

Thanks!
James

A:Revo and Registry File Deletion

Revo is a very good program, however any program can make mistakes.
Since it's not a native Windows uninstaller, it's always a good idea to create a new restore point before proceeding with any removal.

short version:
accidentally deleted files from an SSD by missplacing mouse cursor > pressed esc and ctrl-z immedialtely after delete was pressed. > ctrl z did not work.
> deleted files did not show up in recycle bin
> lost files can be seen and recovered with recovery software but recovered files are garbage.
any ideas? ; )

bit more detailed version:
somehow i just managed to delete almost all files and folder from my desktop.

I highlighted all files and folders and wanted to check the size with a right click. i accidentally clicked delete instead of properties. the desktop was loaded and the files were even spread over dual monitors.... I realized what I have done and instantly hit the escape button and typed ctrl-z but everything was gone already (delete confirmation is turned off since 15 years)
so i thought... no problem, just restore the files from the recycle bin. I even had a current save of the desktop layout.

the Problem: only about 25% of the files that resided on the desktop were in the recycle bin. the rest was gone. I immediately scanned with recovery software and I guess the files are there (from what I have seen in a hurry) but they dont recover properly.
I tried 3 different programs. the all find the lost files and recover them... but when I try to open them it's just garbage.

I think the problem might be that my C drive is a SSD and that maybe the recovery works different on SSDs although the descrition of at leas one of... Read more

I have been looking for a utility that will delete obsolete files from my hard drive. There are so many of these utilities out there and so I was wondering what you people think is the best utility to do the job. (Don't bother mentioning software that isn't free).

A:Best Obsolete File Deletion Utility.

Obsolete files...like what files? Game files? Windows files?
I'd love to help but I don't know anything about obsolete file deletions.
Great, you got me interested :dead:

A while back I opened an executable I shouldn't have and it unleashed a stream of malware my way. I received messages from NOD32 and Winpatrol and started blocking and deleting some files. There is still one file however, that won't go away.
This is the message I receive from NOD32, it's the only software that detects anything with this file. I've also tried the bitdefender online scanner, but it doesn't detect an infection with this file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\c51a6a477935804.sys Win32/Agent.PUK trojan

When this file is deleted either by NOD32 or manually, it comes back almost instantly. I looked in the dllcache folder, but it's not in there. I tried deleting it in safe mode, but the same thing happens. Deleting on reboot by various tools doesn't work either.

I think my PC is clean apart from this file, but I can't be sure. I'm scanning my Windows directory everyday now and it's only been detecting this one file. I do occasionally get threat messages from the IMON scanner in NOD32. The first one a couple of days ago and the second one today (not sure if posting it like this is ok?).

I am trying to delete some files on a usb flash drive but keep getting an error. It says can't delete file: can't read from source file or disk. How can I delete them? Can I use a registry program to remove just those files and if I can how do I get it to work just for the flash drive? I really don't want to format the flash drive if possible.

Hi guys,

i have problems with deleting file corret.

Another error: "Access denied" (Logged on as admin). Tried to take owership but the problem is still there. Next try was to look which process is locking the file. LockHunter says that the system process is locking it and i also cant unlock it. And after bout 1min the file is deleted.
Same problem appears with visual studio 2010. Trying to debugg one app then stop debugging in the middle of the programm, try to recompile file but linker says: "cant open file for writting".

Blessed Love Pingu

PS: also tried to uninstall avira cuz steam.com says some anti virus programm cuz problems but also no help

A:File remains there for about 1min after deletion

run ccleaner.
link: CCleaner - Home

you dont have to uninstall it just for a short time disable the real time protection, and click on the steam install file and right click and hit run as admin.

this should help you get steam installed.
have a nice day!
