Screen Keeps Going Black Randomly

Q: Screen Keeps Going Black Randomly

My computer screen keeps going black at random intervals. It usually just goes back to the screen I was on, and I don't have to restart my computer. The one time it did it, it gave me an AMD display error. I am running Windows 8.1. Things I have done recently: added MalwareBytes, reset my notification area icons, and added a general user account so now I have an admin and general account.

Another weird thing my laptop has been doing for years is the mouse pointer will randomly freezes and sometimes I have to restart the computer to correct it. I have taken to using a USB mouse, and sometimes I have to switch between the touchpad and the USB mouse because the webpage I'm viewing will start scrolling up and down on its own erratically when I'm trying to read something. Windows apps do this too, for instance when I'm viewing my photos it will scroll to the left or right erratically as well.

What can I do to troubleshoot this? I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 10, I just need sufficient space to store my files first- unless there is a free, secure online service I can use? Thank you!

Preferred Solution: Screen Keeps Going Black Randomly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After having my HP Pavilion dv7 for slightly over a year (and just out of warranty), my screen has started to randomly go black - and there is no response from ctrl-alt-del, Esc, mouse movement or anything. It doesn't sound like it shuts down (all power, volume, etc. lights stay on), but doesn't respond unless I shut down and reboot. It is happening more and more frequently and most recently, the computer froze and the screen went slightly scrambled (like a digital tv would during a storm). It didn't go black that time, but shortly after it froze, I shut it down.

There is a possibility that this could be related to a time when the laptop was left on a pillow and shut down from overheating, but that could be a coincidence as well.

Any ideas? It operates on Windows Vista.

I am stumped on this one. My HP pavilion dv6 turns on, gets past the BIOS, screen goes black. If I leave it on I can tell it's working in the background, because eventually the wireless icon flips on. After that, I can press the sleep mode key, wake it up, and then after a moment of displaying everything fine it switches off. Also, it appears that when I shake it after the screensaver comes on (at which point the screen flips off) it will again display momentarily before switching the screen off. I dual boot Ubuntu, same issue, still the occasional moment of functionality.

Removing the battery and doing a hard reset doesn't help, can't boot to safe mode, can't change graphics drivers since I can't see anything. Ideas?

I have HP ProBook 450 G3, around 3 years old.

Randomly, my screen goes black for a few seconds, then the computer plays a sound ("Windows Hardware insert" sound) and then the screen goes back to normal. The computer (system) is normally running inbetween and it usually lasts for about 10 seconds. I haven't really figured out if there is any pattern behind the times when my computer does this. I've searched through forums but I haven't found any solutions that would work for me. My display and video card drivers are all updated.

Thank you for your help.

3 Days ago while I was playing Dota 2 my screen went black for one second and then it came back (the green led was on), later that night it happened again. The next day happened again when I was playing Star Conflict.

Today it did it like 10 times already, once while I was in firefox, rest in Star Conflict. At one particular map, where I had no problem playing yesterday. When I was facing a supernova (large burning fireball in space) the monitor went black then came back then black, when I turned the ship away the monitor was fine. I slowly moved the ship around to see when the screen goes black and when it reached the fire (or something beyond it).

Powered down pc, took it apart, cleaned it and checked if everything is connected nice and tight. It had some (a lot) of dust, carefully removed it, cleaned the cpu and the vga fans both. Started pc, started firefox, winamp and star conflict (these 3 program were running when I had the black screen), I got this black screen for a second in the garage of the game.

Right now im going to reinstall my graphics card driver, will update with result.

In the meanwhile. What can cause this? How to fix? I googled it before I came here, some people claimed its dead transistors on the motherboard, some said its memory fault, someone else said its the cables, some other dude said its vga and go replace it....none of these guys had a solution.

A:Screen goes black for a few secs randomly

Reinstalled the vga driver, now whenever I start a game the screen goes black and comes back after a few seconds, then goes black again and again and again. I have music in the background. If I close the game with alt+f4 the screen fixes.

Games I tried: Dota2, Rift, World of Tanks, World of Warcraft, Kotor2, Star Conflict
I have other games too but didnt bother with them.

So, what now? If you tell me to buy a new vga I will stick a screwdriver in your arsehole. I have no money to buy a new one.

I own a Gateway MD2614u and it has been true to me for the last 2 years, but now it has a little problem. The screen turns black and will not come back on unless I hold down the button and restart the computer. It is not the backlight on the screen and it is not the screen itself. I hooked an external monitor to it to confirm and it made that screen black as well. I was using Windows 7 Ultimate X64 on the machine however I reverted it back to Vista Home Premium X64. The problem reoccured even with its intended operating system. Does anyone have any ideas what the cause of the problem is? I don't believe it is the cable or the monitor.

A:Laptop screen goes black randomly

It may be that the GPU is overheating or failing. Try running something like FurMark to stress the GPU. If that causes it to go back quickly, there's a good chance that the GPU is the problem. For most laptops, this is not something you can fix short of replacing the entire motherboard.

My laptop is around 4yrs old and hasn?t had any problems until a couple of weeks ago when my screen randomly went black while in use. The laptop remained working, I could still hear the video I was playing etc but nothing I pressed would turn the screen back on.The only solution seems to be closing the lid, removing the battery then putting it back in and switching on again. 10-20mins later screen goes black again. This problem is also intermittent - it went away for about a week and now has come back. Any light on this (pardon the pun) would be greatly appreciated. K

Hi there,

I'm looking for some advice on a problem I'm having. I've had a look around the web and I've found some posts with the same issues however I can't find anything that is specific to the problems I'm having.

For the last few months, I've been experiencing random black screens that last a few seconds before video signal is restored. When the monitor comes back it's as if the signal has completely reconnected (rather than just showing a black screen).

I generally use a dual monitor set-up however it is only the second monitor that loses the connection. This monitor is connected through the DVI port and the monitor that is connected through the HDMI port never blinks, which lead me to believe this was either a monitor issue or a DVI port issue. When the HDMI monitor is used as a single monitor (rather than dual), this does not disconnect.

However, when I hook the PC up to my TV through HDMI and use it as a single monitor, this does occur the black screens which happen on my second monitor meaning it's not a monitor issue or a specific port issue.

This happens both under load and during general use such as browsing the internet or even just idle at the desktop. I've tried various drivers on the Nvidia GTX 980 in question however all giving the same problem.

I was fairly adamant that this was a GPU issue and as a result sent the unit back while it was under warranty. While this card was being repaired I bought a cheap... Read more

Every once in a while the laptop screen will go to a black screen. I am not doing anything that uses a lot of graphics but I am actively using Word 2013. The backlight is clearly still on when the screen goes black. I cannot get the laptop to respond in any way noticeably while this happens other than to hit the  button, wait until the w button starts to blink, then hit the power button again. When I do this the screen comes back on. Also when the screen comes back on it resumes to right where I left of. I have scanned for virus's and found none. I have also changed the sleep and power settings to try and fix it to no avail. What is wrong with my laptop?

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.

I have been following different topics in this forum, I did try the "Verifier", but everything was fine.
I have no clue if this is graphic card, cable och screen problem, i have nothing to go on.

I may also add, this is happening randomly. But It could be worse when playing games!

Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 760
Screen: AOC G2460PQU 24"

I did try to remove and reinstall the drivers for my graphics card, also reinstalling the computer. But the problem is still there?

So I bought a new laptop but after 20 minutes or so the screen goes black (sometimes with a startup of an app or clicking something). The computer still runs so I can put it to sleep but when I wake it up it immediately goes black. I hooked it up to an external monitor and it worked on that. I thought it was a graphics problem, but now I'm not so sure. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my Nvidia and my Intel HD Graphics Drivers but that didn't seem to work. I can still hear sound out of the speakers. The problem didn't happen at first, after about a week and a half the problem started occuring. I also tried to boot up from safe mode to no avail. The computer was not overheating according to the CPU temperature. The laptop is always on a charger. Any possible fixes?

Hello everyone, get ready to have a little bit of reading!

So my problem is actually that my screen (both my screens cuz I got 2) turns black randomly. I am in a CS GO game or playing Eve online and my screens just "stop working". I can close and re-open my main screen and it says "no signal". BUT the computer is still working fine, I was on Discord with friends and they were telling me where to go...didint work out pretty well, but that said, it looks like my GPU crash or something?

Happened twice in 30 min and now it just happened once...
I had another problem 1-2 months ago, well I had that problem for about 6 month or so. Randomly my computer was freezing, image freeze, sound freeze, ALL freeze. (used to happen like 1-2 times a month) Now it seems that it wont freeze (I am gaming less I suppose). But I got this new problem or black screen.

Oh and at the same time I am writing this, I was trying to update my GPU drivers, and it popped an error and close the Nvidia menu...
Well actually I think it might be my GPU that is about to die, but how can I test it? How can I be sure it's the GPU? It could be the power supply getting old and not giving enough power? It could be the motherBoard...maybe?

Here is my build :

What will happen is that I will will be using the laptop with or without the charger cable plugged in and the screen will randomly go black. The keyboard will stay lit up but none of the buttons pressed with change this black scrren state. I even have tried turning off the keybaord blacklights but the whole keybaord becomes unresponsive. It doesn't atter if I close and reopen the laptop or leave it there for minutes or hours I have tested it out. It will just stay in that state until the battery runs out. What I have to do in these situations is hold the power button for it to completely shut off and then turn it back on, only for it to do the same thing. I have timed it. It's very random. Sometimes it does it after a few hours of using it, sometimes after a few minutes.  A few months ago I live chatted with someone who suggested some edits, such as completely turning off sleep and the screensaver but that didn't help. They also suggested that I follow their instruction and download an install certain drivers but that didn't stop the problem either.  I do believe this started right after a windows update a few days after purchase. Hi guys,

Got an issue which I think is my monitor but not 100% sure. I have an Acer LCD monitor and since this morning every few minutes or sometimes a bit longer it flicks off to a black screen but then goes back to what I had up (the monitor isn't actually turning off). I went into my display settings and it isn't showing the name for my monitor. It's only showing "Digital Display", however I am 99% sure a few days ago it actually said my Acer model there.

I checked my monitor drivers and they seem to be up to date and I can't pin-point the problem and it's quite frustrating. I did a full system scan with avast and don't believe I've downloaded or been attacked by any malicious files.

When I did the virus scan it didn't do it at all, so it seems like it only does it when the computer is in-use?

If it helps also I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and my graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce GTX 480.

If anyone can shed any light on this issue it would be greatly appreciated. If me providing any more information will help please let me know

I have attached all of the files as suggested here http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

I have spent a whole lot of time trying to figure out the problem and I think I've eliminated all of the internal & external hardware as a cause so please help me if you can. Thanks

A:BSOD and black screen reboots randomly

Tablet PC seems to be giving you the problems try repairing net framework 4.0 by going to control panel going to Add or Remove programs and going down to net frame 4.0 click change/remove and click repair. If you can repair it then Tablet PC should start running correctly again and hopefully clear up your bsod.

This is my problem...

My screen randomly went black. There is light on the screen but other than that everything else is black.

This happened when...
- I open more than one window
- I open more than one MSWord file
- watching video for more than an hour.
- sometimes just random.

This morning, I opened a video and observed on how long the screen will turn black. It happened, after an hour and a half.

When this happens, I need to turn-off my laptop immediately, so that I can turn it again immediately. Once, I observed if the screen will show the images again, but after around 20 minutes and nothing happened. I turned-off my laptop, but I can not use it again immediately. When I tried to turn on my laptop it stopped on the stage where it was about to show the desktop. There was a blank screen and a cursor at the center, and stopped there. I rested it for another 30 minutes and it worked again.

Please help.

I have been having this problem for a week now. My computer randomly "hangs". This is: the screen suddenly goes black (if I was listening to music, playing a game or something, the background sound also stops) and shows a small, purpleish window saying "Modo de Ahorro de Energ?a" (it's in spanish, so roughly translated it means something along the lines of "Energy Saving Mode").

This happens randomly. Could either occur when I start my computer, in the middle of a game, or 20 hours later after turning it on. Nothing I do can help this. My keyboard does not respond, and neither does the "Reset" button. My only option is to unplug and plug it back in.

I use Windows XP. I've scanned my computer multiple times with multiple, different programs for viruses and malware, and nothing popped up. I believe it might be a piece of hardware that's near death by now.

What do I do?!

A:Computer hangs; black screen randomly.

you could reset to factory defaults. If your translation is correct Energy saving mode is your setting changed for system to hibernate so resetting to f/defauly will make a change

I got my L540 with Windows 10 last December (2015).  Starting in March or so of 2016, my laptop's screen would go black (you can see some back-light so the monitor is functioning) and there is NO pointer / cursor. It started infrequently (once a week or so) and then worked it's way up to several times a day.Suspending (closing the lid or using the power button) and reactivating restores the system to where it was when the screen went darkSometimes, waiting 30 minutes or more would take me back to a functional machine. While the screen is dark, I can hear the fan and other noises from the laptop itself.I've disabled as many of the Windows apps as I can to see if it is app updating or some such thing.  But it's still happening. In addition, the screen will randomly "flash" or "blink" for reason I can detect. I found this thread for the Y50-70s:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y50-70-black-screen-at-random-times/m-p/... where Blue Screen Again wrote:"From what I've read here, it is probably some power supply to screen issue or bad LCD cable, might be completely wrong though." Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might determine whether this is a hardware or software issue? Thanks, in advance, for your time.

Hello everybody,I've bought that fantastic machine called Spectre x360 and I love it.Unfortunately since first days I'm facing what I think is a driver/software problem (not hardware related). This issue happens only when I'm on Windows, not in bios or during boot. JUST IN Windows envinroment, especially after login and when the computer was turned off. Sometimes it happens when I'm using it after some time, randomly. This happens only when the Spectre is on battery. On AC adapter the problem doesn't appear. Problem: the screen goes black randomly for some seconds and then reappears, sometimes the entire image slide on the right and there's a portion that looks like yellow and corrupted, then goes black and reappears. Windows Version: I'm on Windows 10 Home 64bit, build 14393.321 (anniversary update). The entire screen is working correctly during normal operations, no artifacts. Replication of the problemInitially I was able to replicate the problem with driver build 4360 (which is the driver version on the HP website). Everytime I loaded youtube home page and the banner started to play the screen went black sistematicly. Then I've upgraded the GPU driver via device manager, which upgraded my GPU driver to, dated 25th july 2016 and the problem was happening a lot more rarely. Now I'm facing again this problem, but Edge works correctly and it isn't the cause of the problem, it can appears even when I'm not doing anything with PC.I've noticed this issue ... Our computer has been shutting off ever since we replaced the motherboard and cpu. It wasn't the motherboard, or temperature because we tried replacing the motherboard, and putting in a fan. The computer runs Windows 7, and usually shuts off during a game within 30 minutes of turning on.

My XPS 15 9550 - quad core i5 freezes randomly - the screen will turn black (or grey), but not the windows BSOD. I have to hold the power button to force shutdown and reboot the laptop when this happens.
Tried updating all drivers, not helpful, clean installed windows 10, didn't help.
This could happen anytime, even at the time I'm not touch my laptop, or running anything.

Seems to be driver related or hardware.. anyone have some issues?

A:XPS 15 9550 Freeze randomly - Black screen

I had the exact same issue yesterday, was on the phone with Dell support for 2 hours and they couldn't figure out why, the final decision was they were going to replace the motherboard as they thought it was more likely a hardware issue than a software one.
Question, did you use the new TB15 dock with your 9550 as I'm trying to figure out if the failure is related to using the dock to provide power.

Over the last week my hp notebooks has been (what I thought ) shut off when I didn't do it. It was weird though because after turning it back on, all my apps were still open. Now, a little bit ago, it happened when I was using it it... went black, turned back on, and the page was just up. Didn't even need to reload. Did a bit of googling, and found it might not be shutting off, just entering hibernation, but I don't have it set up to go into hibernation.

I also thought it might be because the battery no longer holds a charge and is slowly dying (at 7% for the last few days) but that doesn't really affect me because I always have it plugged in.

how can i find out why?

A:laptop screen randomly turns black? wtf help

It's more than likely a loose video card. The card sits almost directly under the keypad on a laptop and after use can come loose just enough to be an on again off again problem. Jazz

My computer is a Windows Vista Home Premium x64 with NVDIVIA drivers. The computer in question is not functioning yet, as it repeatedly crashes and sends me to a blank, black screen, as if the computer had been restarted. What other specs do I need to provide, and what tests do I need to run so that I can provide you with the necessary information for optimal assistance?

Additional info: About two weeks ago, my computer had many BSODS, usually back to back, until , magically, they all stopped I occurring after my dad opened up the computer to clean the dust out. I have not had a single bsod since, and this current series of crashes started after my pc froze(while audio was on; said audio was on loop but only a fraction of the audio).

Right now, the computer will no start up anything, not even a load up screen. I have to wait about twenty minutes while the computer is powered off for anything to load after I power it up. Is this an indication of the problem at hand?

A:Computer randomly crashes into a blank, black screen

That could be one of multiple things.
Overheating can cause the computer to shut itself down, especially if you have to wait for it to cool off to use it. Considering it was cleaned recently it is possible that this is not the problem. But the fact that you need to wait a period of time before it starts up suggests that heating is still the cause.

It can also be caused by faulty RAM. I suggest you run Memtest and see if the RAM might be damaged.

To make it easier to identify your problem, it would be useful to know your computer's specs.
Is it pre-built, and if so, what is the Make and Model details?
If its custom built, list the specs here, also including the Power Supply Unit's make and power output, as that can also cause freezes.

I've had this monitor for about a year.  It is currently connected to a Lenovo laptop through a docking station.  It was previously connected to a Dell laptop through a different docking station, and this problem has occurred with both computers / docking station combinations. At random, the screen will go black.  When this happens, the on / off button stays illimuninated with the same color as it is when the screen is on.  This could happen multiple times in as few as 10 minutes, or not at all throughout an entire day.  When it is occurring frequently, I have opened the laptop to see if its screen is doing the same thing, but it is not.   Another thing that happens less frequently, but may or may not be related is the display will skew slightly.  This also occurs randomly. Other than this problem, it is a great monitor.  Does anyone know why this may be happening and how I can correct / get it corrected?

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this but, ever since I reformatted my laptop, it randomly freezes for about a second and a stuttering noise comes up. Then the screen turns black. It doesn't shut off because I could see the back light, it just turns completely black. What's causing this problem and how do I fix it? I checked the Event Logger and there are tons of errors and some critical kernal-power things.

A:Laptop randomly freezes and screen turns black after

Can you start in Safe Mode? If you can, do the following steps in safe mode.Click Start Menu
Right click My Computer/Computer
Click Manage
Click Device Manager from the list on the left
Expand Display adapters
Right click each display adapter in that list and click Uninstall (do not hit OK when the dialog pops up after clicking Uninstall)
Put a tick to delete driver software for the device and click OK
Restart Windows in normal mode

If you continue to have the same problem or other problems, let us know.

Hi guys,

I'm experiencing a strange problem on my secondary desktop (the crappy Alienware). Randomly, the machine restarts within a mere 5 minutes of it running.

It also restarts just sitting on the login screen, so it doesn't only happen when someone is logged in. It, of course, doesn't do this in Safe Mode.

Any thoughts?

A:Windows Crashes to Black Screen and Reboots Randomly.

Bumping this. This issue is rather annoying, and I would prefer to fix this instead of doing a clean install.
