BSODs & Conflicting instructions re "Thunderbolt Firmware Update" install - ThinkPad X1 Extreme

Q: BSODs & Conflicting instructions re "Thunderbolt Firmware Update" install - ThinkPad X1 Extreme

Hello Lenovo friends! I've been a huge fan of ThinkPads-- my first was a T400s back in 2009. And I've definitely found them to be solid, reliable machines. I purchased a ThinkPad X1E last November and just encountered a new problem today though-- when I use my TB dock and play video, I've been getting BSOD messages. I've connected the dock to two monitors, one via DP and the other via HDMI. The Stop code is "DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION." I've read online that to fix this BSOD, you simply download and install the latest TB firmware update. So I tried doing that today. But when I go to install the firmware update, I'm getting conflicting instructions! The first dialog box says, "Please do not plug the Type C or Thunderbolt device to your system while updating the Thunderbolt Firmware." The second dialog box instructs, "Please connect at least one Thunderbolt device to your PC..." What is the correct step to do? I only have one Thunderbolt device and that's my dock. Should I connect it to my X1E while I'm updating the TB firmware? Or not? I've read on other forum posts that other X1E owners have actually bricked their docks when performing TB updates so I'm very concerned about that too. Can someone please advise? Thank you! PS. Here are some of my system details too, btw, in case that helps:My Product #: 20MFCTO1WWMy BIOS version: N2EET37W 1.19 Some screenshots: 1. Here's the BSOD I've been randomly receiving when I use my TB dock. I've noticed that the BSOD seems to appear whenever I try to play video on my connected monitors. 2. Here's the TB firmware update I'm trying to install via the Lenovo Vantage app: 3. Here's the first dialog box instructing to not plug in a Type C or TB device while the firmware update is performed: 4. Here's the second dialog box instructing to plug in a Type C or TB device while updating the TB firmware.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, Lenovo recently released a firmware update in the Lenovo Vantage app for the thunderbolt port on my 5th Gen X1 but the update seems to fail. Also tried the update by downloading it direct from Lenovo support website but getting the same error.  Any suggestions? Cheers

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 on a recently-purchased X1 Extreme gen 2. The installed BIOS version is 1.26. I looked in the Drivers & Software page and I see that 1.27 was released on 29 October. However, running `fwupdmgr --get-updates` says "No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.26: 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older". How long does it usually take for firmware updates to be available via fwupdmgr? Should I manually update? I downloaded the BIOS Update Utility for Linux and the README. The directions in the README are clear, but nowhere do I see the 20QVCTO1WW ID mentioned above and want to make sure that I have the correct files. The BIOS Update Utility download is called `n2oul06w.zip` and contains 3 CAB files: N2OET40P.cab, N2OET40W.cab and N2OHT32W.cab. Is this the right file? Which one should I apply? Thanks in advance,-Mario.

Although I am running a fully patched system, when Lenovo Vantage failed when I tried to install the "Critical Intel Thunderbolt Software and Firmware Updates - ThinkPad" (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Tablet-and/Critical-Intel-Thunderbolt-Software-and-Fi...). I tried several times and then decided to come here and find out if others were experiencing issues. I decided to follow the manual install procedures available at the link provided in the pinned thread. While following those procedures, I noticed that several of the instructions provided were incorrect (e.g., how to find version number of current Thunderbolt firmware from the tray icon). And others were not particularly helpful (e.g., please ensure that Thunderbolt device is attached before updating firmware - this is both unclear and incorrect - I updated my Thinkpad with just the power adapter attached - is that a Thunderbolt device? If yes, then why don't the instructions say so, since they already demand that you attach a power adapter before proceeding?). Through the update process, I found that I already had the correct Thunderbolt software package present (v17.4.78.500), but I did not have the latest Thunderbolt firmware version applied (I had version 40 instead of 43). Perhaps this is related to why the update through Lenovo Vantage failed, I don't know. In any case, I'm not accustomed to installing firmware patches when instructions are inaccurate or don't match expectations, so... Hello, the thunderbolt on my X380 Yoga completely stopped working. The software installed fine but upon updating the firmware the following promt appears:    When I check the version inside the Thunderbold software, this is what shows up:    I am running Windows 10 Home 1803. Any idea why this is not working? Is my thunderbolt controller not working properly? Thanks

A:Thunderbolt not working / Unable to update thunderbolt firmware

There is an issue with the update for the tunderbolt firmware when updating through the system update utility. This is a known issue that the Engineering department has been working on. The only known resolution to this issue so far has been to replace the system board. Im sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. If the device is still under warranty i would speak with the support center to have a tech install a new board.

Hi there, I have a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme.I heard of a problem regarding some new generation Thinkpads with a BIOS option called "BIOS support for Thunderbolt", which is needed for a proper running Linux installation. On Notebooks like the P52 or some Yogas enabling this option effectively *bricks* the device.See: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Lenovo-P52-bricked-by-selecting-BIOS-thu... Can anyone of you confirm that this behaviour appears with the X1 Extreme as well? Or does it not? Has anyone tried it yet? Dear Lenovo Admins/Techs: could any one of you try this setting out with one fresh device? I want to install Linux on a second SSD (Linux Mint 19), I managed to get into GRUB loader via USB, but on startup the machine hangs completely, showing a "kernel panic" with some log lines regarding "thunderbolt", so I presume, I NEED to enable "BIOS support for Thunderbolt". Anyway, simply knowing that there *may* be a BIOS setting, that effectively *destroys* me notebook makes me completely uncomfortable.  Could you please confirm, the setting is safe OR tell me, that it is NOT safe AND you are working on a solution? Thanks in advanceB.

Hello,I recently purchased a brand new X1 Extreme, switching (like I suppose many people) from an older MacBook Pro. I am delighted with the machine, and in particular I found that the following key combinations are implemented in the same manner as the MacBook:Fn + left = HomeFn + right = EndHowever, some Fn key combinations are not implemented, and they do nothing. In particular:Fn + up = Page UpFn + down = Page DownFn + backspace = DeleteSince the combinations are implemented by the keyboard controller firmware they cannot be added in software, much to the frustration of former Apple users. So, my request is: would it please be possible to pass this request to the person who maintains the keyboard controller firmware on the X1 Extreme? Adding the missing combinations would maintain total compatibility with the current setup, and would increase the appeal of the X1 Extreme for all the MacBook refugees. Thank you for your attention.

I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 for my Thinkpad X1 Extreme.  I booted up in Ubuntu 18.04 and it wasn't detecting anything connected so upon reading online it seemed clear that I needed to enable Thunderbolt in bios.  I  enabled everything in the Thunderbolt dection, with no security.  After booting up, the system said "Configuring Thunderbolt Controller... Please do not power off".  It stayed like this for 30 minutes and I finally decided to attempt power off but it would not respond.  Holding the power button for as long as 60 seconds does nothing.  I tried closing laptop lid... I tried unplugging thunderbolt... nothing works.

Community: we just recently purchased a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme laptop and Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock. The Laptop is awesome but unfortunately we're on our second dicking station and wondering what we're doing wrong--or if we have a defect.  The docking station came with a 230W and 65W AC power cord, and the dock has both a 230W/170W port and 135W/65W power port. When the 230W cord is plugged into the 230W port, the dock doesn't turn on (nothing plugged in). When the 65W cord is plugged into the 135W/65W port, it lights up but no network when a laptop is plugged in or charge. The only way I get a light on the station is to plug the 230W cord into the 135W/65W port, and then when a laptop is plugged in I get network and charge. We contacted Lenovo and they sent a replacement as they admitted it was not working as it should. The second one also exhibits the exact same behavior and we are at a loss and ready to return for a refund.  I also don't want to plug a 230W power brick into a 135W/65W port for fear of overheating. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas, we'd like to hear them.  Thanks.

I have an X1 Extreme plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AN0230US).  Whenever the screen locks it cuts off audio.  I like this. Prevents sound coming from a computer that is locked.  However, when I unlock the computer, the only way to get the sound back it to restart the whole system.  This I don't like.I have 2 monitors (ThinkVision P27H's) plugged  in using Display Port and the audio is playing from one of the monitors.  The monitors are listed in the audio panel, but neither will provide any sound on unlock.  If I change the volume it lags terribly and eventually freezes.  I can switch to internal audio.I have:1) Reinstalled audio and display drivers on the computer.2) Reinstalled thunderbolt drivers on the computer3) Updated the dock's firmwareBut the problem persists.  Any ideas of what to try next besides getting a replacement?  Every item - even the cables - in the chain are supplied by Lenovo.  Should work flawlessly in my estimation.

I note a new P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ) Thunderbolt Firmware update has just been posted on the support drivers page (24 Jul 2018) which is great news, but it's release note refers to Thunderbolt driver / software version 17.3.74.400. The Thunderbolt driver software currently available on the P51 20HH, 20HJ support drivers page is version 17.1.64.250, which is quite old. Please would you also put the latest Thunderbolt Software on this support drivers page. BTW: The P51 (models 20MM, 20MN) support drivers page does has the latest Thunderbolt Software (17.3.74.400), so I assume this could be installed on a P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ), as all models use the same Thunderbolt controller - ID 15D9 (Intel JHL6340).
