Windows 7 SP1 failure to install, error code 80070002

Q: Windows 7 SP1 failure to install, error code 80070002

I can not for the life of me get SP1 to install. It always gives me the 80070002 error.

I've done what the microsoft help says to do which is clear out my updates list after stopping windows update in services then starting them again but it just produces the same error code.

I've run the system update readiness tool as well as a sfc /scannow and heres the CBS zip, a zip containing all the cbspersists(so I get them both uploaded under the limit) and a screenshot of the error.

This is starting to affect my ability to play newer games giving me 3B bluescreen errors and the like.

Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide me! -Tera

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 SP1 failure to install, error code 80070002

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've exhausted my ability to try to solve this one on my own. I've run all of the automated fixes I can find from Microsoft, so I'm asking for some more targeted help.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1. I have run the System Update Readiness Tool (May '14). It completes successfully, but I don't know what it actually accomplishes because it doesn't make things better as far as I can tell.

Here is my windows update screenshot:

Hi guys,

I have had this problem ever since SP1 was available and never was able to install it. The idea of doing a clean install doesn't interest me so I have avoided SP1 till now. But now the new AMD catalyst drivers require SP1 and was wondering if this problem was ever solved.

I remember when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was released, there was a problem with registry cleaning and stuff like driver cleaners because of which couldn't install SP1. I tried a lot of solution like replacing missing files etc but didn't work then.

So I tried now but am still not able to install it. During the update process on startup it stops around 10% and fails.

I have run SFC /SCANNOW(no integrity violations) and the cbs log is attached.

I ran the Update readiness tool and the checksur log is clean.

I ran the MGADiag as well and have attached its output.

Heres the old thread way back in April 2011.

A:Windows 7 SP1 install failure, error 80070002

Ok. I tried the standalone SP1 install package but it failed the same way and gave error 800f0826.

"Windows Update error 800f0826 is displayed when an update for Windows has failed to install and is preventing you from installing additional updates. Error 800f0826 does not identify the update that has caused the problem. The update that has caused the problem will display a different error."

I am guessing it will probably lead to the earlier error 80070002.

I looked in to the CBS.log and have trimmed it to just show the complete log from start of installation till failure. Have zipped it since its quite huge text file. I just don't know what to look for.

I have about a 3 year old Win 7 64-bit computer. It has had Windows update issues for quite some time and always been a bit quirky. I just started reading about the error code and have done all of the appropriate response fixes from Microsoft. Let me preface this by saying I have always had issues with the memory which I am installing new chips hopefully today. Until then I was wondering if someone could have a look at the simple text that SFCFix came up with. It will be below. I also cannot run the scf /scannow command in windows or safe mode due to the usual system protection thing. I thought maybe if I posted the SFCFix log maybe someone will recognize it as being something that someone has seen. I am also attaching the CBS log. Thank you in advance.

You have bitflips in the registry - possibly the result of problems with RAM.
I suggest testing with MemTest86+ first to check that out.

Hi,

I have had my pc running on Vista for about 3 months. For the first couple of weeks it allowed me to do Windows Updates. Since then I have had a whole range of different errors and as I found a fix for each one it was replaced by another. I am now constantly getting the Error No. 80070002. I have tried everything I can find online to rectify the problem including those below which seem to have fixed other people's pcs. Any help greatly appreciated.

Solution One
1)Stop the windows update service (from services)
2)Delete temporary update files - In Datastore and download
3)Restart the the windows update service

Solution two
Apply this file
after u apply this file reboot and try to do a update again it should work http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...-bdb8-c4e00af5b94b/NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe

Windows Backup is giving me error 80070002 (The system cannot find the file specified.) My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L755 with an Intel chipset, running Windows 7 Home Premium. I am trying to backup to a Toshiba Canvio Slim II 500GB USB hard drive. I
see in Event Viewer that each time, the error message refers to the same file (C:\Users\[my name]\Desktop\1 FAT32\Mein\Aircraft\Ford Tri-Motor\MVI_5222.AVI), which I can find in Windows Explorer.

I have tried chkdsk in safe mode; checked that the "volume" I am backing up from is online and assigned a letter; entered "mountvol /r" followed by "mountvol /e" in Command Prompt; checked that the Windows Media Player Network
Sharing Service is disabled; and I tried clean booting with .NET framework disabled, then running Backup with avast! Antivirus shields disabled. I tried using SFC, but it froze my laptop during verification at 88%.

I have tried checking profiles in the registry (none missing or duplicated, though some profiles that I deleted are still listed, which has not caused this problem, as their deletion did not cause this problem that week), found that my laptop's BCD is in
the same partition as Windows (which is mounted and has "C:" as its assigned letter), and my laptop is not dual-boot.

I don't know if this is related, but three weeks ago I found that avast! got stuck during full scans, as I explained in detail here: https://forum.avast.com/?topic=211848.0 After ... Read more

I now realize the reason i get an error is because a while ago i deleted my ProductId from the registry for a reason, and exported it but now i cant seem to find, i must have deleted it by accident. But now i literally how no idea if im able to recover it somehow, or recreate it. I would really appreciate if im able to recreate it somehow!

it was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

remember theres ProductID and ProductId, i have ProductID which is located in

Hello,

I have been trying to update my computer for about 6 months now to no avail. Updates are downloaded, but not installed - - instead I get error code 80070002 and the updates all fail . I read through another thread and tried using the MGADiag.exe program and my OS is genuine, but the error code 80070002 comes up repeatedly throughout the report. Please, if anybody knows how to resolve this issue, I would be very appreciative!

A:Windows Update Error Code: 80070002 - Help PLEASE!

80070002 is a File Not Found error. It suggests (to me) a corruption of the downloads. Give this a try (you must be using an adminstrator account for this):

- Go to Start and type "cmd" (without the quotes)
- at the top of the Search box will be an entry for CMD.EXE - right click on it and select "Run as administrator"
- In the black window that appears, type "net stop wuauserv" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Wait until the screen tells you that it's completed successfully. Leave this window open as you'll need it later. If it prompts to stop other services, tell it yes.

- Open up Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Delete the contents of the folder (but not the folder itself).

- Go back to the black window and type "net start wuauserv" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

- Reboot and see if Windows Update works now. Let us know what happens.

Oh and by the way,
I uninstalled my SP1 and SP2 from my PC to try an upgrade install from within windows (My Setup DVD did not have any SP's on it. It also came with the computer from dell, already installed). I had heard that this works like a repair install and helps fix any corrupt system file problems. But when it gets to the second part of the install (after copying windows files, i think) it says:
Windows was unable to complete the installation and will install when you restart the installation again. The installation window popped up again and so I tried again. It said the same thing, I tried it multiple times but it refuses to work. I rebooted and it booted into windows setup, not vista. It started and then said:
The setup could not start or something like that. Using msconfig I have changed the default OS back to vista.

Hi
Windows Update has been trying to install the same 9 updates now since yesterday. Prior to that it's updated with no problems. It goes through all the motions, including having to restart the computer to finalize the updates and it goes through that also, then the Update window says it failed and the error code.
WU then starts the whole thing all over again. Right now it's still on my taskbar and the restart button on the pc has the WU icon ready to finalize after restarting.

I've followed the directions in the Windows UPdate Posting Instructions.

This happens after the computer restarts and fails to configure SP1 during startup. The solution for this error mentions having this error searching for updates which is not the problem in my case.

I have tried SFC scan, System Update Readiness tool and Fixitit 50202 but none of them fix the problem. I don't want to resort to an inplace upgrade.

Hello, and welcome to the Seven Forums!

Thanks for providing such a detailed first post. That saves us a lot of work

This first step is not a fix, just some further diagnosis, because you have a serious corruption there. Basically, you have what appears at first glance to be a Servicing Stack corruption. The Servicing Stack is right at the very, very heart of Windows Update, and all servicing operations (eg Windows Update and the Windows Installer at the very top rely on it to perform the core servicing, using the Component Servicing Infrastructure (CSI) at the bottom, and Component Based Servicing (CBS) as the middle man). This is incredibly simplistic, and actually not particularly accurate when you get into true detail, but detailed enough for now.

When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.

Hi. I've just tried to update my computer (Haven't updated it in a long time), and I was prompted these 2 errors. The first, Error Code 80070002 was displayed when I attempted to update it via Windows Updater. The second, Error Code 80070057 was displayed when I ran the program 'Windows Update Diagnostic', in response to the first error, as I was told that would help solve the problem.

It did not, and now I'm fearing that the downloading of a torrent file (Not porn) could have caused this via a virus infection? Any help would be most useful

I'm getting this error code when I try to run backup. Can I have some suggestions as to how to fix it please?

A:Backup error code 80070002

The error code seems to mean the backup cannot find some file. What type of backup are you doing, image and file?

If it is a file, you might check what is being backed up and alter the selection to see if you can find the location of what file might it be missing. If this is a follow on backup, perhaps start over with a new backup.

You might check the Event Viewer to see if it gives you any more info, or look in the Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup folder to see if any of the .log files have any info.

Windows could not search for new updates

Error Found Code 80070002 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I am using Vista Ultimate 64bit with 4Gigs ram with SP1

Is there a fix for this?

A:Error Found Code 80070002

I found a couple of possible fixes. the first one came from here WTF! Vista update error code 80070002 - techPowerUp! Forums and it says:

1) Go to the Start Menu.

2) Click on Computer.

3) Open up the drive where windows is installed (usually your C drive).

4) Open the Windows Folder.

5) Scroll down a bit and locate the SoftwareDistribution folder (exactly like that).

6) Open the Download folder.

7) Open the Install folder.

8) There sould only be one file there. Right click on it and select "Run as Administrator".

9) After entering an Administrator password, run the installation, using the default values and clicking yes at the license.

10) After the installation is complete (shouldn't take more than a few minutes), restart your computer (as an added precaution, though not necessary).

11) After the computer restarts again, run Windows Update again. It should run as normal. All fixed!

I apologize for Microsoft's ineptitude.
This worked for me guys...

And the other two are from here, Error Code 80070002 on Windows Update - Tech Support Guy Forums

This one has me boggled. I've searched high low looking for a solution to this issue without any success thus far. As the title of the thread say, I've been unable to install SP1.

Link to my CBS directory (zipped): https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...6E21F538FA!107

SFC /SCANNOW reported no errors.

Let me know if you need anything else and thanks for the help.

The error message says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

A:Win 7 x64 SP1 Update Failed, Error Code 80070002

There's no sign in your CBS.log file that SFC actually ran.
an 0x80070002 error is actually a 'File not found' error, and often means that a registry entry is pointed in the wrong direction, rather than that a file is missing.

Is your machine showing any other signs of problems?

Hi all,

I am using a batch script to install Windows Updates from the command prompt. I need to install 3 updates, all of which are .msu files.

Here is my script:

@echo off
for /f %%A in ('dir /b *.msu') do (
echo == Installing Updates == "%%A" ...
C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe %%A
)
echo.
echo ###########################################################
echo.
echo == Updates installed ==
echo.
echo == Press any key to restart ==&pause>nul
echo.
shutdown.exe /r /t 0

I placed this batch script in a folder along with all of the updates I want to install. It finds the updates but when the standalone installer starts, it immediately returns error 80070002 "The file specified cannot be found."

I am not running this from a network share. The computer has been clean installed and is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1. I have also tried this on 2 other computers with exact same results.

The code I used for the batch script I got from here:

Batch script for windows & software updates installation - Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2 - MSFN

Hello everyone!
After my first failed attempt to post my problem (since I posted on another person's thread... sorry about that ), here I am again.
I have been having a "Configuring Windows Update 32% complete" and shortly afterwards the "Welcome" messages on startup and the "Preparing to configure Windows Update.." followed by "Shutting down" on shutdown for quite some time. Of course, Windows Update isn't working and the "sfc /scannow" command always comes up with the "There is a sytem repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again". As you might have guessed already, restarting doesn't help and I am stuck on this endless circle.
So, as requested on the instructions, I have followed the required steps and here are my comments:
1) SURT installed succesfully and quite fast.
2) Commands "sfc /scannow" and "sfc/ verifyonly" come up with the message mentioned above so I moved on to option three, only to find a .txt file of 0 bytes and empty inside. So I guess this step didn't proceed as planned...
3) I have removed the older CBSPersist cab files and I will post them right afterwards, since the CBS.zip file including them is about 37MB.
Without further ado, please find attached the .zip file.
Thanks in advance for your time.

A:Error code 80070002, sfc/ scannow command not working

Problem:

IE 10 update fails to install.

What I've done so far:

Updated all drivers for everything under device manager

Ran selective startup thru msconfig and attempted install to no avail
Installed SURT
Ran sfc /scannow

CBS.zip file attached, I think that's everything from the post instructions.

Thanks again!

On Aug 27, 2012 my system first indicated it had a problem because it could not install updates. The update history is completely gone even though it had installed many updates since first being activated.

I've done searches and completed all the usual steps with no success. These include
Microsoft automated "Fixit"
Clearing the update history folder.
Memory tests - run all weekend with no errors.
Chkdsk with surface scan - no errors.
Admin Cmd Prompt-> SFC /SCANNOW (exits after a few seconds with "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.")
Windows Repair Install (Fails with "Windows cannot copy files ... 80070241"). I've tried it using the genuine original installation DVD and also tried it using the "flat" install method with no luck.
MS Security Essentials and MalwareBytes both say there are no threats. I'm all out of spit and bailing wire. Any suggestions?

A:Windows 7 no longer updating, code 80070002

First try this.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. find the Catroot2 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties.

In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)

Click Apply.
Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'

Once complete (may be almost instantaneous),

try an SFC /SCANNOW again

Hello all and many thanks for any advice given.

A coworker's Asus laptop crashed with a Status Oxc000000f error. He was unable to get to any other screen. I offered to try to fix it and have just run into error after error. Ultimately after everything else had failed I bought a new Hard Drive to install and ran a clean install from a disc I had burned. The laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium with the Product Code sticker right there on the bottom. After the laptop booted to the desktop there is a Windows Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not Genuine error message in the bottom right corner of the screen. Almost everything seems normal otherwise. Except for internet access, when I try internet explore it will not load and the diagnostics show that it is missing a properly installed network adapter.

I am not a computer wiz by any stretch of the imagination, probably shouldn't have attempted as much as I have, but I'm in this deep I'd like to see it through. If any one has any advice on how I can correct these issues I would be very greatful.

Do you have any particular reason to believe that it is a genuine copy?

Where did you get the ISO that you burned? I'm assuming it was an ISO.

Did you attempt to activate Windows?

Hello all,

WARNING: SOAP Fault: 0x00012c

I've tried several actions although none does any help. Here is the list of actions:
- upgrade windows update agent to the latest version
- windows update agent reset by this instructions https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/971058/how-do-i-reset-windows-update-components
- empty Temporary Internet files
- check the rules and blocked traffic on windows firewall and physical firewall between server and workstation vlan
- sfc /scannow

It looks like significant Windows 7 error, although reinstalling is not my option.

Hi

Are you getting that error for every updates or when installing a specific update ? . Before trying any repair attempts,  uninstall your antivirus software and see if it helps. You can re install it later.

If that didn't solve the issue, please follow the below steps.

1 ) Make sure Date, time and region settings are correct.

Make sure your WIndows 7 is SP1 installed. If not download and run the SP1 offline setup.

3) Install and open the tool. Click next to continue. Go to Step 3 and click on the Do it button to run System File Check.

4 ) Go to Step 4 and click on the Create button under System Restore.

5 ) Go to Start Repairs and click on the Start button.

6 ) If it asks permission to backup registry, allow it to do so. Now you will see the main screen.

Click 'Unselect All' to remove default selection. Now select the following items.

Hello,
I have been having some trouble with Windows update recently. My CheckSUR.log file says I'm missing 146 CSI Payload Files

I've attached both CBS and CheckSUR log files. Thanks for any help offered!

A:Windows update failure - error code 80073712

Here's the summary from your CheckSUR.log file...

Code:
Summary:
Seconds executed: 889
Found 146 errors
CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 146
This tome indicates that something serious interfered at the crucial time of an update install where the files were being relocated after a reboot - especially as SFC appears to find nothing amiss.

I'll post a fix protocol for the above errors later - but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of its being effective.

A:Windows 7 Professional Security Update failure (Error Code 80000ffff)

.NET 3.5 is part ofWindows 7 - so we can't use the usual trick of uninstalling/cleaning it out.

There are a mass of what appear to be simple download failures in the update log file - but nothing informative in the CBS.log file
These failures relate to updates as early as KB2862973.

Please run the CheckSUR tool, and post the CheckSUR.log file

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.
