WINDOWS XP PRO - No wireless icon in setup

Q: WINDOWS XP PRO - No wireless icon in setup

I have been trying to find out where I can find the missing driver, I'm assuming that's what it is, to add to my Windows XP Pro which will enable me to set my computer up for a wireless internet connection. I have done all of the system checks from the Microsoft website, and have spent hours researching. I have discovered that other people have run into this same problem, but don't know what their end results were. If anybody has run in to this problem, and they know how to solve it, please inform me. When you do an internet connection, there is no wireless icon to choose.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Try going into Control ;panel>system>hardware>device manager. Is there a network adapter listed there?
Expand it (click on the+)

Right click on it,on the adapter, then update driver.

Hi,

I have a laptop that was previously running Win 7 Ultimate x64 andI upgraded that to Win 8 Pro x64 quite some time back. On this laptop, when I have several windows open for an app on my task bar, when I repeatedly left-click on the task bar icon, it cycles through the app's windows. That is, as I click, the app window will show up in the foreground and the next click will show the app's next window, etc.

Now I have a new laptop, with Win 8 Pro x64 pre-installed and I no longer have the cycle-through feature. When I click on an app that has multiple windows, all it does is show me the preview windows down by the taskbar.

I searched and searched and could not find where such an option exists for me to enable that feature to cycle through when I click and I couldn't find anything. Nor was I able to find any posts on the matter.

Does anyone know how I can enable this feature on my new laptop so that both are functioning the same?

Thanks!

Hi.

I'm trying to connect a laptop to my home WLAN but the laptop's 'Wireless Connection' icon is nowhere to be found. When I go to 'Add Hardware', Windows finds a 'Network Controller' (I assume that means the NIC), but says I need to either connect to the Internet or insert the CD (which I don't have) in order to install the hardware.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

A:No 'Wireless Connection' Icon, Windows XP

What version of Windows are you running? Your profile says Windows 7 but you are posting in the XP Forum?
Go to Start/Search (7 or Run in XP) type devmgmt.msc (press Enter for XP) Right click the devmgmt icon in the search results and Run As Administrator (7) In the Device Manager, any devices with yellow marks need to have drivers installed.
On an internet computer, go to the troubled computer manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your service tag# or your Make and Model# download the drivers you need, starting with the Chipset driver and installing the Network Adapters (WiFi, and Ethernet) save them to a USB Flash Drive and transfer them over to the troubled computer and install them.

Hello got a simple question, one I am hoping has a simple solution. I recently reformatted my computer to finally upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 professional. Everything is working except there is a small issue with my wireless icon. Unlike in windows Vista, XP, 2000, in windows 7 I cant seem to show the current connectivity status on the wireless icon on my taskbar. I am connected to the internet fine, just the icon doesnt show the connectivity strength. Here is a picture

Any ideas? or is this normal for windows 7?

A:Question about windows 7's wireless icon

The icon in windows 7 is a monochrome one so shows the signal strength as either gray or white bars - from the snip you show I would say you have a full strength signal, as all bars are white

Can anyone tell me why my wireless icon in the lower left has a orange asterix over it and the bars are now greyed out? I have internet and am connected to my network. I can see and access all computers and devices in my network. But this is driving me crazy because it's not supposed to be there. I have searched all over the net looking for a solution and now have come to the only spot I know that gets answers. By the way, I cannot see any other networks "available" but my home network. Any insight would be great. I just want this notification off and see my bars ungreyed.

hi, i just completed a clean install of windows 7. im trying to set up my all in one printer wireless. in the printers set up wizard i can get as far as having to enter the password to connect to the network.

this is where im having problems. my printer is still detecting the network that was set up before i did the clean install, and that network name is not on my network now. i am using all the same hardware.

ive tried every password i had written down from the previous install, which include: user password (computer), password to add other computers to the home group, the security pin for my router, the security key for older programs to add them to the network, and the homegroup password. once again these are all from the previous install, not the new clean install. (i tried these because it was still detecting the name of the old network on the lcd interface on the printer when using set up wizard)

and for the new install i have tried the only passwords that i have been prompted to create during installation and setup thus far. these include: computer user password (for windows login), and the network homegroup password.

i know one of the passwords from the previous install worked, but due to poor organization on my part i do not remember which one it was.

looking through the brother forum, and literature im not finding anything specific to this problem.

any suggestions?

I recently bought a new win XP laptop (with windows media center).

I first setup the wireless connection to my router - no problems.

I then walked through the Media Center setup. I chose to connect to my wireless network - thinking I can play all the songs/video tht I have on my desktop. Well, when setting up the wireless connection - it couldnt find my wireless network. In hindsight it may be because the bandwith of My D-Link router is not sufficient - or perhaps Media Center doesn' support 802.11b wireless?

Anyhow, since this, I have totally lost connection to my wireless network - it says "Limited or no Connectivity".

I've tried Disconnecting and then reconnecting to the wireless network, disabling and enabling the connection, and also repairing the wireless network (via Control Panel - Networks). I still can't find a way get my connection back to my wireless network.

Any ideas? Thanks!

here's some image

A:Can't find 'Wireless Network Connection" icon on windows 7

have a look and see if its disabled in the bios

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enabled in Bios / Setup
as the PC starts you should be told how to enter the bios / Setup - one of the F keys usually F2, F10, F11 or del key is often used
MAKE SURE you DO NOT change any settings and look to see if there is a setting for the wireless or WLAN
if its disabled change it to enabled
if its enabled - then exit without saving
if you cant find a setting then exit without saving

------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try reseating the wireless adapter

If the adapter is easily accessible, usually through a cover on the bottom of the laptop.
Remove and reinsert it carefully and firmly to make sure it is not loose.
Then remove and carefully and firmly replace it several times to cure any possible looseness or corrosion.
At the same time check to make sure the antenna leads are securely attached.
Note: This is not taking the machine apart. We do not recommend removing the keyboard when that is necessary to find the wireless.

Just reinstalled Windows XP Pro on a friend's daughter's computer. A D-Link Airplus dwlg510 wireless adaptor was added to her EMachine a few years back (model D6417). It was working erratically before the XP reinstall (which was done for another reason - was never done and computer was really slow so we figured this might speed it up - it did dramatically by the way). I went to the D-Link site and downloaded and installed the driver. Wireless connection still isn't working (tried wired and it works fine, but her room doesn't have a cable connection available) and the symbol in the taskbar comes up with an X over it then goes out. Light on the adaptor is blinking. Is there anything else I could be overlooking??

Hello TSG Forums,

I've got quite the challenge for you guys. I've gone through two different tech support lines, three computer savvy friends, and every troubleshooting trick and tip I could scour off of the internet. All efforts have been in vain thus far. So as to not make this post too long, I'll get to the point.

I recently bought a new wireless adapter to connect to the internet with. Previously I was using an older adapter that my room mate was lending me. ( a Motorola Wireless USB Adapter WU830G to be exact.) At first when I installed the motorola it didn't work. I can't remember what I did to make it work for the life of me, but I eventually twisted my computer's arm enough that it gave in. Now it's uninstalled from my computer, along with (I hope) all the drivers and programs that were using it.

So I bought a new adapter (Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO USB Network Adapter - F5D9050) read the instructions carefully, and made sure that it was installed just as the manual says. (Install the software, wait for the prompt, etc etc.) Everything seemed to be going smoothly until I tried to configure my connections. (Where the wireless detects all the access points, and you put in your WEP key etc.) The wireless adapter seemed to be doing nothing. The device manager showed the adapter with no problems, and no errors, but the program was stubbornly pretending that my wireless adapter didn't exist. After trying multiple USB ports, uninst... I setup a workstation running Windows XP, this computer was setup with one monitor hooked up to the video card, I then put in a second monitor to go on the left of this monitor. In the display setup it showed monitor 2 as being on the left and monitor 1 on the left. I right clicked on monitor 2 and did "set as primary" the issue that I'm facing is, after a reboot, all icons are on the first monitor on the right rather than on the left. I'm not on site so I can't easily swap the cables on the video card outputs. Is there a way to make it so that the icons stay on the 2nd monitor which is also the primary monitor? I've been googling everywhere but most information I find people are suggesting using some third party software, but I'm pretty sure you can do the trick without the use of third party software.

Let me start from the beginning. From what I've read and seen the best way to have a home network and Internet connection is this config. - DSL modem (mine is actiontec wireless gateway) connected to the Router (dlink dl 624) connected to a switch (dlink). I did disable the wireless portion of the dlink router but can only get Internet connection from one computer (xp pro). I can't get anything from the other computer (xp home). Plus I can't see any of the other computers from either machine. Also, I can only access the dlink router to change things and not the modem.

Sorry for the huge request...

I am setting up an older Dell C600 laptop. The hard drive had been formatted. I have installed XP but can't find the wireless modem to setup. I was able to activate the infrared port. The ethernet connection works. I'd appreciate help. Thanks, Scott

A:Wireless Setup - Where's the Wireless Adapter?

The C600 has an internal antenna for wireless networking, and Dell offers, for an extra $199 (direct), an internal Mini-PCI 802.11b adapter. Unfortunately, that card needs to be plugged into the same slot as the wired Ethernet Mini-PCI adapter. So to toggle between wired and wireless networking, you'll have to use a PC Card for one of them.

I have a simple wireless router at my house that works fine with my laptop and my wife's. I've been working on my inlaws laptop this past week getting it rid of some virus and spyware issues (with much help from these forums).

My network issue is this: each time I reboot the machine, I have to restart Wireless Zero Configuration. Otherwise, it won't find my wireless connection (I get that error when I try to choose a wireless network that says windows can't set up a wireless network).

This laptop used to be hooked to a Linksys Easy Advisor router deal at their house. I uninstalled that, but I'm thinking maybe there is an issue leftover from that?

I hope this gives enough info to get started looking at some solutions so that this will recognize wireless signals without having to reset the WZC each time.

Thanks!

I'm a novice with networking but am using SMC wireless router from two PCs via Linksys adapters. I do not have a wired connection from either PC to this router. I want to enable WEP/MAC filtering but don't understand the sequence for doing this. I am imagining a chicken vs egg situation. I see how to enable WEP by connecting to the router (wireless remember) and selecting WEP enable and entering a key . Should I do this first, and then change the PC's adapter setup to use the key so I can re-connect to the router? WHich should be done first? Same sequence question for enabling MAC filtering. If I setup WEP is it really worth it to enable MAC? I'm using DHCP settings in the router, should I change this to use unique IPs for these two PCs and disable DHCP?

A:How to setup WEP for wireless

It won't hurt to use both MAC and WEP filtering, but if you want to pick just one, use WEP. You can set the keys in any sequence, they just have to match before you can connect.

Hello:

I am thinking about setting up wireless in my restaurant for my customers to use when they come in to eat. I am thinking about getting a business class DSL as the backbone, and then i'm tossing some ideas around.

1st -- I'm looking at the Dlink DI-624 because of it's management features and I would only allow HTTP/S traffic outbound and block all inbound.

2nd -- I would like some kind of security/liability... so maybe a page to come up when someone connects to the network saying that the restaurant is not responsible for viruses, etc on this network from rogue clients so they would have to enter their name and telephone number and check a box saying they have read it... once it is checked, then they can browse

3rd -- what kind of equipment would i need.... this restaurant is no bigger than a typical 2 bedroom apartment so we're not talking enterprise level WAP's.

Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks

so I can configure my wireless device to connect to my network at home and have no issues--everything is fast and good.

At work, I configure to connect, and things work, but not well. Gmail for instance has issues sometimes loading my mail, sending, etc. vpn connections same thing. This results in choppy performance and overall low productivity.

My colleagues with their macs have no issues on the networks, so it must be a configuration issue.

How can I even begin to diagnose what is wrong?

Hey all! I got a new Netgear router and I'm kind of lost on a few things. I've read the documentation (well, some of it anyway) and I just have a few questions.

1) Where do I start?

2) I have 4 PC's that I want to connect. All are Windows XP laptops except my main computer which is a Windows ME. Would this connection work with the XP's? If so, how would I start?

Thanks in advance guys.

I am looking for some setup ideas for a wireless LAN on a 22 acre mobile home park, to give internet access to all the residents. I was looking at setting a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme 54Mbps 802.11g Wireless Router(DI-824VUP) at the DSL entry point and 2 or 3
D-Link / DWL-2700AP / 54Mbps / 802.11g / Outdoor Wireless Access Point. I know that the wireless signal is impeded by walls and such, but being that these are mobile homes I am assuming that they are not thick at all. Does anyone have any suggestions that would make this work better or easier? THANKS

I live in the outskirts of my town and was thinking that setting up my wireless router on the roof might get better reception than going through walls or other?

Also, I have two wireless routers and set one up as a repeater do I really lose speed? I just bought a second router (Netgear Nighthawk)and will try it out first to see if it has a longer range than my Netgear N600. Maybe I won't need to use the N600 aas a repeater. Speed loss can be 50% I have read. Can anyone confirm this?

you can lose speed -
I live in the outskirts of my town and was thinking that setting up my wireless router on the roof might get better receptionClick to expand...

why the roof ?
is this connecting with the mobile network rather than via cable/telephone or satellite services
if you are putting on the roof , you may want to discuss with an electrician on waterproofing and lightening protection, and any earthing or potential difference issues etc

you should not lose speed through an extender ,if the extender is in a good signal area and you are also in a good area with the adapter

xirrus will help you map out the sort of signals you are getting

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

To start I have to be absolutely honest and say that setting up networks - wireless or otherwise is not one of my forte's but I thought I would have go and after 7 hours of trying am beginning to think I will have to admit defeat.

My friend has a Bigpond Elite Wireless BroadBand Network Gateway device and was sold a TP-Link PCI express card ? TL-WN781ND 150Mbps Wireless Lite N PCI Express Adapter to receive the signal.

Now it doesn't work and as I am not familiar at all with this sort of problem I was wondering if someone could give us a possible explanation or better a solution as to why and perhaps fix it.
He lives in a large town where the reception for mobile phones is good so am guessing that that is not the problem so what?? The device itself is showing good signal strength Wifi, internet, and the system out here in Oz - 3G wireless access.

It only works when I plug the device in to my TP Link switch which is via the TP Link router / modem - by cable.
I have since replaced the previous adapter card with a TP Link TL-WN951N (a much larger adapter card) have installed the drivers for it as I did the last one and still no net connection via wireless although again cabling it works fine.

I now cannot even bring up the 10.0.0.138 to view the wretched things settings as I did on a couple of occasions before.

I was under the impression that this "thing" was just like a large wireless dongle but obviously it isn't.
I am of the view that he should have stuc... Read more

Did you ensure that you removed the old driver software before installing the new? If not, try uninstalling the newe software, then the old software. Reboot the machine, then install the new software, then install the card.

Hello:

I am currently consulting for a local bar and trying to figure out what would be the best way to set up wireless access for them. They have two floors and a sizable patio out back.... I was thinking a D-Link 624 with external internal antenna -- should i go with two access points or what would y'all do?
