Faint Black Screen On Boot Up?

Q: Faint Black Screen On Boot Up?

Rescently my father's work laptop running Vista Business decided to boot up with a black screen. Very faintly in the background of the black you can just about make out the login screen.

I searched on the Internet to see what the problem is, and believe that we are dealing with a 'Black Screen of Death'?

Anyone able to tell me whats wrong or have any suggestions as to what we can do to resolve the issue?

Preferred Solution: Faint Black Screen On Boot Up?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey!

My Dell Inspiron 1100 is over 6 years old at this point, quite the dinosaur. However, I still have a bit of old data I would love to remove before it really bites the dust.

When I boot up the machine, usually the display is clear and bright. However, after no more than a minute the screen goes black and only a faint outline of the desktop remains. What is the problem and what do I need to do to solve it?

Thanks!

Hi

backlights or invertor board is failing (failed).

If there is an external monitor socket on it use a monitor to see the screen and then you can backup your data.

My screen suddenly went very dark, though I am able to faintly see the HP logo at startup. I've tried plugging it into an external monitor, yet I get nothing. I have now replaced both the backlight and the inverter, yet there is no improvement. Is it possible that I have a software or driver problem? I can see (with a flashlight on the screen), that during the startup process a screen comes up that says something about startup repair. Any ideas??

A:Pavilion G60 black/faint screen issue

When you plug into an external monitor, are you remembering the key- combination required to set to external monitor that is on your keyboard?

Laptops do not automatically enable a remote display, you must tell it its there.

Also if you have a removeable video card, the card itself may have died, but it sounds to me like the tube or inverter is either wired backwards, or not getting good power. Do you have brightness/darkness key on your keyboard? Usually looks like a circle, half is black, half is white.

Satellite Pro L40-17H (PSL4BE-00T005EN)

Hello,

I would appreciate some help with the following problem:

SYMPTOMS: Screen is black, but I can see that there is a faint image in the background.
I get a good image in external monitor.

I suspect, _among others_, that there may be a faulty *lid sensor/switch*, but I have been unable to locate it, although I have disassembled the unit.

If somebody knows, please let me have the exact *location* where I should look for the switch.
Thank you

A:Satellite Pro L40: black screen but faint image in the background

> I suspect, among others, that there may be a faulty lid sensor/switch,

No, I don?t think its sensor issue.
I assume the FL inverter is faulty.

The FL inverter controls the backlight of LCD display module.
Therefore this part should be checked and if necessary, it should be replaced.

Hi all,

My friend has a Dell P780 flat panel CRT monitor... and there are two faint, black lines appearing horizontally across his screen. The lines go all the way across the screen. The first line is 1/3rd of the way down from the top, and the second line is 1/3rd of the way up from the bottom. What are these lines? Are they dead scan areas or something?

Thanks for the help.

I have faint banding across the screen. It only shows up once into windows(Does not appear in BIOS at all... at least that i can tell) and shows across ALL applications. It only is really noticable on darker images like grays but not so much on black. The bands are of altrenating thickness (Small/Large Small/Large), but are not very wide at all. Thin little bands spaced out and altrenating like i said. They do not move, though if i bring up an image or a dialog box, it will create the same banding acorss those windows and stay with that window/dialog while the ones normally there pass over it.

Hello

The screen on my Portege R600-11B has suddenly gone extremely dim. There's no problem with it coming back to life after hibernation - but it still coems back extremely dim. The brightness does flash up when I press the button at the top right hand corner with a sun symbol on.

I think I might need an FL Invertor? Do you know how I find out which one I need and instructions on how to fit it?

Also I've had problems with Windows 7 Professional starting up incredibly slowly. I'm assuming the two problems are not related.

Hope you can help, thanks.

A:Portege R600-11B - Screen is very faint

Hi

I recommend connecting an external monitor.
If the picture on the external monitor would be fine, then your internal display or maybe the FL inverter needs to be replaced.
You ask how to check this?
Well, I?m afraid each part need to be checked using another good tested part.

In your case I would ask an specialist for assistance?
Is warranty valid? If yes then I would recommend to contact an Toshiba service in your country.

Try plugging it into an external monitor to see if that works properly. (if you have a desktop computer, use that monitor)

A monitor should plug into most notebooks on the back or side somewhere, and you may have to do some keystroke or change a setting in the display options panel to enable that external output. But if you can get it to display on the external monitor without any trouble, that means your screen is probably bad.

Hello,

This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.

I upgraded my pc with a 120gb ssd from a 500 gb HDD. I installed Windows 7 on the ssd and formatted the old drive and thus removing its windows installation, however i did not remove the 100 mb system partition (did not know how to).

When I restarted the computer it showed a black screen with a blinking line in the top left corner, at the same moment it ussualy displays the windows startup logo.

I disconnected all other drives but my ssd and reinstalled Win 7 after having formatted it. It worked fine for hours, and I was able to boot without problems. I had disconnected all drives but my ssd while installing windows 7 but when i reconnected the old drive (on which there was still the 100 mb system partition) the black screen with the blinking line was back. The ssd is in sata1 and Bios sees all drives.

it would be great to be able to resolve it without reinstalling windows a third time.

thank you very much in advance.

Hello,

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

Then i would get a black screen that would sometimes show a cursor that i can use with the black screen but most times just the black screen. Eventually this black screen ca give way to Diagnosing your PC loading screen that loops endlessly

Okay this started after I downloaded the anniversary edition for Windows 10, the first time i booted up the computer i had faced the AVG Watchdog initialization bug which prevented from accessing the laptop for the few weeks as tried looking for solutions forcing me to eventually uninstall AVG through Safe mode (the only way i managed to was through turning it off and on 3 times as every other way including holding F8 had not worked). After booting up the first time without issue after removing AVG and getting some things done, I turned it off without issue then i faced this new problem which is still plaguing me. I've looked up in forums for a solution but the closest i found was just reinstalling windows and losing everything, does anyone have a solution where i can still keep my data?

Hi Helix935 and welcome to Tenforums.

If it was less than 10 days since this happened, you might have been able to go into Settings>Recovery and rollback from the Anniversary Update. But it's been too long now.

If it's data only that you're needing to save, you could boot the system to Kyhi's rescue media and use File Explorer to copy your data over to an external drive, then perform a clean install, (or reset or refresh from within safe mode).
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
You will need to reinstall your personal applications after the OS is working again though.

Hello, I'll go ahead and start from the very beginning. Thanks in advance though for taking a look at my problem.

About a month ago, my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart. Next time, generally it would work perfect.

So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Just to let you know I'm running Raid0, and this is my first time running it. I'm not sure if this symptom is a common problem if one of the disks are going out. Does anyone know whats going on? Could it be a virus that messed with a boot.ini or any startup stuff? also, is there anyw... Read more

Also have a Cooler Master 212 EVO for the CPU

So I was playing a game called Gnomoria, which to my knowledge shouldn't be very taxing on a computer... When suddenly my screen went brown with vertical lines! I could still hear the music playing but it seemed my PC was frozen. I decided to then restart the computer. As windows booted up, I got the chime that signals you were moments away from logging only to get a screen that is black. I can move the cursor but thats its... nothing else works. I then restarted my computer again with the same problem. Finally, I restarted the computer again but in safe mode with networking and I got that to work. Beyond this point I am not very experienced when it comes to computers, though I did build this rig myself. I'm just wondering what went wrong, and how can I start to fix this problem. I was not overclocking at all, at temps right before the Brown Screen looked cool with the CPU at 40C and the GPU around 35-40C. I also posted this under graphics problems mostly because this issue probably is GPU related. I'm running on 3.12, or 3.9 drivers. Im not sure which one but I am running on older ones mainly because I was having Blue Screen issues about 2 months ago which was fixed thanks to this forum. I'm just not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

A:Brown Screen and Vertical Lines - Black Screen on Boot

I forgot to mention that I did a system restore which brought it back 10 days earlier in which a version of direct X was installed. The system restore didn't work though and i was still welcomed with the black screen and only a mouse cursor. I have not changed any settings though recently.

Thanks for all providing valuable suggestions in my previous thread Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As I am picking the clean install option for my resolution, I am opening this new thread.

I reviewed the tutorials (Macrium) of this community. I found Macrium Reflect Free (Version: 6.0.753 (21 July 2015)) for download.

I downloaded/installed above Macrium to working PC. This version has an option to create Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick upon installing on working PC. I created a rescue media USB.

I created complete HDD image of my unbootable (Z580), before doing clean win 7 install. I am going to clean install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) using my OEM KEY.

I posted the OEM DISKMAP in my previous thread Post # 90

I find System (d:\) 200 MB Windows_7 (OS) ( c:\) 653.44 GB & my Lenovo_data (e:\) 25.47 GB. Lenovo says, if I change the partition configuration, it will make built-in Lenovo recovery unusable.

I like the idea of adopting infrequent system changes (adding new programs etc) and frequent data changes (growing user documents) in image backup strategy. I mean taking system partition (d:\ + c:\) image back up as and when I add new programs and taking data partition (e:\) image backup periodically.

How do I re-structure my DISKMAP to have effective periodical image backup without disrupting built-in Lenovo recovery?

Are there any Windows 7 disk partition recommendation/guidelines?

Ok it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me because I lost them a very long time ago. Is there anything I can do to fix my computer? Thanks.

Hello to everyone

I got a Toshiba C850D-140 laptop, bought about one-two years ago. I decided to reinstall Windows 7 and I began the whole process. Everything was good, the "expanding windows files" bullet finished successfully and then the laptop restarted automatically. Then the problems started.

No Toshiba logo showed up, only an underscore at the upper left corner, non blinking, just laying there. After about two seconds the system restarted and the underscore showed up. This process loops forever. I can enter BIOS menu, I can enter boot list menu but the problem is that the laptop cannot boot from any device. Neither HDD, nor USB nor DVD. The DVD contains genuine Windows 7, working and tested on other PC's but the laptop refuses to boot from it.

Any ideas?
Thanks beforehands

A:Satellite C850D-104 - no HDD boot, no ODD boot, just black screen

From my knowledge the ?blinking underscore? means a HDD problem.
But you said, the underscore does not blink but its ?lying?.

In some cases this could mean an RAM malfunction. However this is just an idea.

Question: did you set the BIOS to default? In BIOS press F9 to get default settings and pressing F10 save the changes.

Is HDD listed on the first BIOS page (HDD name, size,)???
If not, this means that HDD is faulty.

I can't boot my X1 Yoga from USB to resolve Unmountable Boot Volume problem. I got an "Unmountable boot volume" error on a blue screen when trying to restart my Lenovo Yoga X1. Trying to resolve the issue:- I prepared a bootable USB using Windows 10 media creation tool- I chose my USB as the temporary startup device on the boot list When booting with USB, the WIndows splash screen appeared for a moment and then the screen turn black. I could not follow any of the steps to fix the boot issue. I left the computer alone for a few hours but laptop remains the same with the black screen. - I tried to boot from this USB on another laptop and it worked fine.- I also ran hardware diagnostics, and no problems were found.- I connected an external monitor to the laptop, but still gets the same black screen I appreciate your help on this issue. Thank you.

Started in the beginning with me booting up my computer. And no live screen occuring. ie. Monitor is on but goes to sleepy mode. (orange light instead of green light). I'd have to boot again before it'd run. However, now no matter how many times I boot it does not cause a live monitor. I bought a new stick of ram. PC3700 400 Mhz. Even though my MO takes up to 333 Mhz but that should be okay as it'll just bump it down. I also reseated my graphics card and changed the slot in which my RAM was in.

If I reseat the graphics card the computer will cause a live screen, but crash shortly after with a computer freeze. And I'd have to reseat everythign again before I'd get another live screen. Usually holds long enough to load windows and get in for 2 minutes before freezing.

When the monitor does not become live, there are no beeps. When the monitor does show (before the freezing problem) the mo beeps once. Hardrive, fans on power and graphics card all work. mother board light is on. No weird sounds. Monitor does work as I've tried multiple monitors. I'm running out of ideas, Suggestions?

Looks like something is up with your graphics card. Try the onboard monitor output (if you have one) or another graphics card. Hope this helps.

I was having problems booting Windows 7, so I attempted to use the Bootrec.exe tool to rebuild the my BCD. But I screwed that up big time.....

Now I get the following error message on a black screen when I attempt to boot up:

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware change or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc0000098

Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

As far as I can tell, the hard drive is operational. The BIOS detected it and it passed the diagnostics test.

Could some one give me an easy step-by-step procedure to fix this from the command prompt on my Windows repair disk? I'm confused by the procedures I've seen here.

Thanks,

Here is my Windows 7 info:

Age of system and OS installation : 2 years

horizontal faint lines when in full screen games. using d3doverider(bundled with rivatuner) calms it alot and makes it dissapear in alot of games. I upgraded from my 5870 which was fine to my new ATI 6990. tested it on several screens and it makes no difference. So V-Sync and triple buffer has a positive effect on calming it. Often have to force it with third party software.

a milder version of this that is harder to see.

i'm convinced it's to do with the graphics card being too fast or ''too good' for the screen and the image somehow can't keep up which causes the lines. was thinking about getting a 100hz refresh rate. The Card is brand new and works(with lines ) anyone know any work arounds like other cables that work like. 1 place in video card 2. place in monitor(dummies guide please)

Hello Joe, and welcome to Sevenforums

No, your graphics card speed shouldn't effect your monitor's ability to interpret it. Is it set to 60MHz?

If you could please Fill out your system specs (this tool may help you out a great deal), it would help find a fix to your problem.
You shouldn't have to install anything to fix that problem. Does this change when you lower the graphics settings? Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card (I can help you look after you enter your system specs)?
How many watts does your power supply have, and what kind is it (You could put that info into the system specs)? *EDIT [[just found you mentioned it already]]*
What is wrong with keeping v-sync and triple buffer on? Does the game not have these options?
Is any part of your computer too hot or overheating, and does it get enough airflow? Have you cleaned out all the dust recently?
Does your new card have a control panel (from the driver) that can force v-sync and triple buffering? I wouldn't use third party software as a fix to my graphical problems unless as a last resort. See if disabling them helps at all

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. It has been running like a well oiled machine since the day I got it.

I turned it off to watch TV, then when I turned it back on, the screen shows the Toshiba screen for about 1/4th of a second and then goes black.

If I hit F8, F10, or F12 nothing shows up. I have the biggest project of the semester due Tuesday so I really need some help.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

A:Toshiba screen and then black screen only. No boot menu either.

How old is the laptop? It sounds like it's definitely a hardware problem. If it's still under warranty, I'd recommend sending it in. About your project, the only way to get that off of your computer is going to be to take apart the computer and plug the hard drive into another computer. You can buy an adapter (Laptop Hard-drive Bay to USB) for $20-40, they're smaller than a normal PC bay so you can't mount it inside a desktop computer.

While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far:
These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode
boot in safe mode with networking
boot in safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration

I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change.
I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing
memory test - nothing
tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!)
tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed.
chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change.
tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing
Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Win7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow. If anyone has any tips or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

hugs and kisses,
Amplitude

hi,

Known issue some users have it others don't did you try Why is my screen black when I start Windows 7? or this mentions a "black screen of death" fix but i would be verry carefull running executable files from unknown sources

Windows 7 Black Screen Of Death Fix

also this http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2009/12/01/windows-7-bsod-black-screen-of-death-freeze-and-potential-fix/

but it also points to external sources microsoft should fix the issue or that *.exe should be authenticode signed so you have a way to verify it's trustworthy.

I have a gateway laptop (SOLO 5350) and the screen was horribly ripped off(during car accident). Well when I connect my desktop 17" monitor to the port on the back of the laptop and when the windows xp home edition boot screen is finished I get a black screen although the cpu is still workig properly and the monitor is still on. I reboot and press f8 and try to go into safe mode but it just hangs on the screen with all the driver names on it. Can someone guide me in a good direction before I take it to a repair shop?

Normally there's a Altfunction+key that switches the desktop from the LCD to a external monitor.. Look around on the top row of keys for a monitor symbol, then use the alternate function key with that key to switch to the monitor.

it seems that the computer fails to boot somehow, the welcome screen shows up as usual, then stays there for a long time, then the screen turns black (not turned off, just back).

I am using two screens, and I can move the mouse from one screen to the other with no problem, Its like it started up as normal, except but the desktop and windows explorer did not start at all (at least thats how it looks like)

I read somewhere else from a guy with a similar problem

link to that forum page: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...me-screen.html

but I have tried to plan a check on c: (like described on the other forum page), it went well, but it gave me no results

also tried to boot from a windows 7 ultimate disk both on 32-bit and 64-bit, but it did not help

and lastly, when I start it up again, it gave me an option to scan the machine and repair it automatically, and that to failed.

I'm out of options here

Hey I need immediate help!

It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..
