Windows doesn't start files on double click

Q: Windows doesn't start files on double click

I have recently carried out clean install of OS. on C:\

My documents, videos, pictures etc are on E:\
Locations are set correctly as per:http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windo...o-size_p2/2941

While I can see them to browse, and can copy move etc. .... if I double click on an item to open I get error:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them."

For example I double click a video file I get that error ... yet if I carry out via right click :
open with> VLC media player

It opens and runs fine.

Preferred Solution: Windows doesn't start files on double click

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone!

When I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...

I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...

All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless guys! Take care!

I've been a user of Logitech mice for years and always utilized the ability to program a button to act as a double-click (seems like a no-brainer to me and I wonder why it's not a standard feature or at least a default programming configuration when you have software to give you choices).

The newer versions of the higher-end Logitech mice and the SetPoint software they come with seem to have a problem with this feature being implemented in many XP dialog boxes, such as File - Open dialog boxes in Office 2003 programs. The button I program for a double-click doesn't do the job when I mouse over the file I want to open and hit the button. All it does it select the file, like a single-click would do. In order to use the programmed double-click button, I have to first select the file and THEN hit the programmed double-click button (defeating the entire purpose, of course).

The programmed double-click button works fine in many other places, but it also does NOT work in many other places, too. I've tried this with three different models of Logitech mice now, and different buttons on the, too, always with identical results. I'm using the newest version of SetPoint, 2.22.124.

Logitech refuses to acknowledge the problem exists and is suggesting I do a reinstallation of the software (or, uh, return the mouse for an exchange since it must be "defective").

Can someone please tell me if they have encountered or can replicate this problem? I've h... Read more

My symptoms are these:
right click hangs on all files but not folders for about 30-40 seconds then works fine for a few moments but once I click away or do anything else the problem comes back
using the keyboard to copy hangs and then once the computer "unfreezes" copy/paste with keyboard works fine
double clicking on a file that would launch a program hangs for a while then opens the program.
using the delete key hangs
Otherwise performance is normal everything runs fine while using all programs.

What I have tried so far:
Running Adaware and AVG to determine if spyware/malware installed
using shellview to disable processes - no results
cleaned temp files and defragmented drives
uninstalled hp easy button keyboard software

Problem does not occur in safe mode.

Initially, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it denied access and my anti-virus (AOL Active Virus Shield) showed a warning (not-a-virus: trojan). I treated the threats (deleting infected files).

After that, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it just opened an "Open With" box. I created a new open action using Windows Explorer as the application.

But now, it just says "action denied". I have to right click the drive and select open from the menu to open any drive. Folders and everything else work fine.

By the way, I know there was a topic called "double clicking folders opens search window" but the links in that topic just generate an error message...

Help please. Thank you in advance.

A:Double Click Doesn't Open Drives

Run CHKDSK on that drive and try Doug Knox's folder_open.vbs if you continue to have problems.Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. If the above does not resolve the issue then your symptoms could be related to a flash drive infection. In that case download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Reboot your computer when done.

I recently deployed a new Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop.
However, I can no longer double click to open folders -- it mysteriously stopped working.  I can (a) single-click + enter, (b) single click + Open icon or (c) single click + right-click > Open... all 3 of these will open folder.  Double click
does not work.
I have:

Verified I am current on all Microsoft patches Checked all relevant settings;  Folders are definitely set to double click to open (setting them to single click to open does work OK)
Re-associated Folder, Drive and Directory associations by merging the registry fixes as recommended on several sites, such as these:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html?filter[2]=File%20Folder%20Settings
Created a new user profile without success sfc /scannow as Administrator assoc Folder=Folder from Administrator shell

Thanks for any guidance.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
But if I right click on the mousse and choose "open" the folder opens without problems.
The same problem occurs if in the place of "open" I choose "explore"
Could someone tell me what's going on, how can I fix this behavior?

You might see if downloading and merging the Folder and Directory options in the tutorial below may be able to fix this after a restart. They restore the default associations for these.

Hello there.

The title says it all.
I used to open music files on double click with the Music App installed in Windows. I liked that.
But now it doesn't do that anymore, it just shows me empty crap when I'm offline and doesn't play automatically anymore. Why? They changed something after an update or what?

Does anyone has an idea about this? Thanks anyway.
Maybe I'm missing something...

Regards
Hopachi

A:Music App doesn't play anymore on double click

Still nothing....

I just don't trust those apps who change in behavior.
The Music App must have indexed all the contents in the music folder because the first time I've used it (when double click - play worked), there was no folder or file in list.

That must be the explanation but still: play on double click should be kept for user choice and I don't like that it's removed.

my left click doesn't work. even when i touch my touch pad twice to double click it won't either
and then i went to control panel and switched the left function with the right function.
the left clicked worked and did the functions of the right click but the right click didn't do anything

This always happen after like an hour of use and the it will work again after half an hour and then stop working after half an hour.
But then after i restart it it works again!

Thats a simple solution but i hate continually doing this.

This always happens. About 1 hour into using my ACER Aspire E1-522 laptop the left click and the double tap of the touch pad stops working. ARG!

A:Left click and double tap doesn't respond occasionally

The Acer Aspire E1-522 laptop/notebook appears to have a Synaptics or Elantech touchpad.

You didn't say which touchpad driver version is installed nor which Windows version is installed in that laptop.

Reinstalling or updating the touchpad driver may resolve the issue.

If there's an unknown hardware issue with the touchpad, connecting and using an external wireless mouse would be the quickest resolution.

Left double-click now produces "Add to Winamp's bookmark list." When i look at the options available for My Computer --> Tools --> Folder Options --> file types -->edit file types --> actions

I find 3 winamp options, find, and Print Directory Listing (this prints on the printer)

There is no Open (which is what I want and what used to work)

This problem started after I installed a new version of Windows Media Player. I don't recall making any changes in file actions, but maybe I did.

Please help me restore the Open action.

I use Win 7, and just upgraded from 32-bit to 64-bit.

The upgrade has been pretty successful (I used PCMover which helped a lot) and most things are either working as they should, or I know what I have to do to fix them.

However when I double click desktop icons I am moved to Direcory Opus (my WinEx replacement) instead of the programme starting. I have to right click and choose "open" to run the programme.

I'm sure there is a fix for this - I looked in Regedit at the mouse setup, but that seemed fine. If anyone can suggest a solution, I will be very grateful.

A:Double-click won't start programmes

You cannot update/upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit windows in the same way that you cannot change a 64 bit install to a32 bit install. You have to completely format & do a complete fresh install
you have to do a complete fresh install, that is your problem

You can of course transfer documents, pictures etc, but you cannot transfer any programs or settings etc over. You have to install them from fresh
programs like PCmover, despite their claim to be the best thing since sliced bread cannot do the impossible and a change form 32 bit to 64 bit without a fresh install is impossible and will ( as you have found) cause problems

Everytime I try to double-click on a program file it says I do not have permission. if I right click andchoose start the program will open. I tried Avira rescue CD and it did not find a virus. Also, when the computer boots up none of the "start up" items load either. In addition Windows had a security update last week that looks like it tried to install and it says the computer need to be restarted. But when it restarts the icon is still there. I tried safe mode and this does not help. I tried a system restore but the computer said that it is turned off in safe mode. If I do start-run-msconfig to check start up it asks what program is associated with this.

Hi all,

We are trying to lock down the network and computers from prying agents. I have disabled everything I can, including context menus and the ability to modify the start menu, which mens no right-clicking on the start menus or taskbar. However, if the agent double-clicks the "Programs" icon in the start menu an explorer window pops up with the contents of the custom Programs folder on the network. Of course, the agents have permission to access this folder and the adjacent Startup folder with the logon script. So they are free to run the scripts that enable the internet or to roam the network at will. Granted most of the network is secured, but I would like to prevent the explorer window from opening in the first place. Any suggestions?

Cheers
Cliff

Wouldn't that mean you would have to lock them out of using Windows Explorer. You can set that as a group policy. Not sure why you would want to do this.

My computer has started to act strangely. I will list many of the symptoms along with the Hijackthis log.
1. Double clicking on an icon has no effect. I must right click and select OPEN to stat the program or open a folder. This is true with shortcuts (or the program icon itself) on the desktop, Start menu, or inside an open folder. Programs take minutes to start (including My Computer, MS Office, Firefox, and IE8).
2. Once started everything runs very sluggishly.
3. IE 8 update will not work. The update starts and downloads for hours (once overnight), never completing.
4. Installing any program (logged in as administrator or as a user) proceeds and then errors writing shortcuts to the menu or desktop.
5. Suddenly, shutdown requires me to "end task" for several programs including EOUWiz.exe and Skype. This was not the case before this started. After the programs are stopped, it hangs for several minutes before shutting down.
6. Startup takes about 15 minutes to get to the log on screen and several more minutes after logging in.
7. Memory usage is about 75% of total memory with CPU usage about 8%
8. I do not see any signs of a rogue pocess.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been troubleshooting this issue for the past 2 days and I can't figure out what's causing this issue.

If I try to double-click and open an excel file it will give the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
I have tried everything from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3001579. I was able to get it kinda working with a registry hack that basically disables DDE. It will open but still gives
the error and the registry hack will be undone with a windows or office update. This just started happening this week for us. This particular machine wasn't showing this behavior then i installed about 16 windows updates. After those were installed, it stopped
working and even after removing all those updates it still isn't working.
I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

I've been working on my grandfather's computer for a day or so now, trying to figure this problem out.
My sister's friends downloaded all sorts of games from obviously not very good sites. I don't live here, so I'm not sure exactly what she did, but it messed up the computer pretty good!

I've had several problems with it (some I've solved), but the biggest that NOTHING has seemed to fix is that the desktop icons will not open when double-clicked. Neither will the folders in Windows Explorer. I can right click on all of them, and they give me the option to "Open" and then they open just fine. (Last night, I could double click on My Documents, My Computer, and the Recycle bin and they would open (from the desktop), but now NONE of them work.)

I have looked for help all over, have tried several different things (including using this for .exe and short-cut behaviors: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm)
I ran Malwarebytes, three times now (the first time it picked up 108 items, the second them ~53, and the third time I ran it in Safe Mode and it picked up none.) I also ran SuperAntiSpyware in Safe Mode and it picked up on and got rid of 2 things.
I cannot do a system restore, as I've tried several times and none of the points want to work.
And I've also followed a few guides going through the CMD and regedit, to no avail.
I tried a different mouse, and that one didn't work either. However, both mice can double-clic... Read more

Somehow my Windows XP has changed.
Used to be double left click on a folder or file to open it - that suits me fine! How do I get it back to that from what it is now ? Please?
However now if I double left click I get the "search" folder option - like the one you can access by left clicking on "start" and left clicking on the search option - just so I'm explaining clearly I hope.
If I right click on a file/folder I get the context menu with "search" as the top option and "open" as the second or third down.

These are not playback issues, more like file I/O issues. However, MalwareBytes, Adware 2008 & AVG 8 have reported nothing.Concerning these files, I CANNOT:- drag, copy or move the file somewhere else... because the 'drop' is not allowed, ie: I can drag the file to winamp, but when I drop, nothing happens. When I right-click drag it and click 'copy', nothing happens.- double-click the file to open it in Winamp (which I know works, because I've already listened to these shows)- right-click and get a standard context-menu. Most items have disappeared, including 'Play', 'Properties', 'Cut', 'Copy',... although I can click ''Play in Windows Media Player' -- but this does nothing. In essence, I can't really do ANYTHING with these files.Does anyone know if MP3 files can become corrupted over time, even though I haven't changed them since I downloaded them?Attached below is my Hijack This v2.0.2 Report -- there is one entry with "no name" and "no file", which looks suspicious (?)- I also do not k... A:Virus-like behaviour | can't double-click, open, drag or play mp3 files

Title was: Strange File behaviour / think I am infected?, Do not know how to remedy / remove if malware ~ OBHi,I have a problem with a number of MP3 files -- which makes me think my system is infected, or something has gone seriously wrong with XP.I posted once before, but without the RSIT reports as directed by the STICKY instructions on posting a New Topic. Maybe that's why nobody replied, but hopefully, someone out could be able to help this time,....?With these MP3 files, I cannot:- open them... either by double-clicking, or 'Sending To' or dragging onto an application. - access the standard context-sensitive menu in an Explorer window. Key items are missing, like Properties, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Enqueue. Although I have shared these MP3 files across our home-network and they play perfectly well on another computer. I can see full context-sensitive menu, and have even managed to right-click | Copy these files, from my computer and put them on a USB stick. From the USB stick, I can even access the copies of these MP3 files on my computer. But for some reason I can't do ANYTHING with the originals -- can't even delete them! (unless I delete their parent-folder)In last 48 hours, - my Location Bar (where you type in URL) and Google Search boxes went missing from FireFox3.- ran Kaspersky webscan last night (but forgot to save the results) -- it detected NOTHING.- scanned with AVG 8, Ad-Aware 2008, MalwareBytes and SpyBot 1.4 -- all detect NOTHING.- removed a bad BHO, w... Hello. Using vb.net, I've been trying to figure out how to paste the clipboard into the window your mouse pointer is pointed.

If anyone has used unix you are familiar with what i am asking for; just to double right click or middle click and to paste the content of clipboard to the given window.

Can anyone offer any ideas for .net?

I would use double right click, or middle click, or single right click.

Please respond with your ideas~

Thanks

-Sandra

I have four computers running Win10. On two of them the windows "Start" button on the task bar doesn't work. So I can't get to Settings or Apps. I can right click on the Start button and get the "right-click menu". All of the other task bar buttons work.

What's going on with this? It used to work. For a while it didn't work on my laptop, now that is working but on two other desktop computers it doesn't work. All computers have same Win10 version and latest updates (although hardware differs some between them).

Can I add the "Settings" and "All Apps" shortcut I would normally get left-clicking on the Start button to the Start button's "right-click menu"?

When I search for programs on the search function when you hit the windows button it only searches for files found on the same harddrive I installed Windows on (C: SSD 120GB).
I have all my other files, pictures games movies etc on my E and F harddrive.
However when I search for the names on the search bar nothing pops up, can I fix this somehow?

A:Start > Windows doesn't search for files in other harddrives

Start> Computer> then select/highlight which hard drive to search.

Tutorial here> Search in Windows 7

I prefer Option Two starting at Step #2. This way you can easily select what drive you search.

The Start search bar you are trying to use only searches the installed OS drive as you have found out.

Hope that helps.

Like the title said I am not able to double click on anything at all. I have found a way to get past it and set it to me only clicking once and opening a program, but now it affects my games when I need to double click. I don't know what to do, if someone could help much would be appreciated!

P.S. and I also can't hear any game sounds on my laptop.

Try another mouse set up your programs (Shortcuts) back to double click to open them.

I had a similar issue found out it was the button inside my mouse.

I'm running XP Pro and for the last 2 months something has changed on shutdown. I open Start , Turn Off Computer, Turn Off and perform my normal one click but other than a whirring nose in the tower and the green light coming on momentarily on the floppy drive nothing happens. I have to go back and repeat the proceedure one more time for shutdown.

This also happens when installing a program and the window appears saying that it needs to reboot to install...when I click OK nothing happens. I have to go to Start, Turn Off Computer, and click on Restart.

I have also noticed that when my browser opens and I click on the dropdown menu for the stored URLs and it won't open on the first click, it flashes momentarily but it takes the second click to view. This only happens initially from then on the menu drops down on and subsequent single clicks work. The problem seems to have started around the time I started using Firefox as my browser.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried using Restore Defaults?

Open My Computer and select Tools and Folder Options. Then on the General tab click Restore Defaults.

Got new parts for PC upgrade. All parts new (including cables) but recycled HDD and DVD/CD-ROM.

All bits connected and powered up last night in about 10 mins. Put Windows XP CD in, went into setup/ reformat process then PC needed rebooting to continue with Windows setup. Fine.... or so I thought.

Then uhoh... rebooted, went into "Please press any key to boot from CD".

IF pressed any key, went through the whole reformat, copy setup files etc. ELSE, just hangs on that screenie. No error messages or anything!

Seems to me like it's gone into a loop, and not running the Windows set-up files copied into the HDD.

Other unusual thing I've noticed was that it takes a while (about 3++ mins) to progress from the "Setup is checking your system configuration" statement -> blank screen -> Windows set-up/ reformat.

Don't remember having faced with this problem before. Am thinking is it the HDD (about 5 yrs old), etc? Don't believe it's the connection as I have checked, unplugged and replugged the cables inside and after all, it recognises the HDD and DVD/CD-ROM in BIOS.

Any thoughts?

A:Clean install doesn't start Windows setup after copying the files!

Welcome to TSG

maybe the key is the '10 minutes' part of your story

take your time to make sure all ribbon cable connectors, add on cards and memory modules are seated properly ... and load the BIOS defaults.

I am having trouble opeing folders normally. Every time I try to double click to open a folder through Windows Explorer, I am greeted with the message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action." If I right-click, I can get in, but it's a huge hassle to use workarounds like that. Is there anything I can do to fix this? System Restore hasn't helped me a lick with this so far.

A:Windows Explorer Double-Click Broken

Hello Gamescook, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Try downloading and merging the Directory and Folder reg files in the tutorial below to see if that may fix this after a restart. They will restore the default associations for directories and folders.

Hope this helps,

My buddy just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5552 and fresh out of the box he cannot double click drag any windows.

If he wants to drag/move a window, he has to actually click and hold the button. He cannot use the trackpad.

He updated to the latest drives directly from Acer's website and it still doesn't work.

I searched google for any solutions and I found one post where the guy had the exact same problem, but no one replied with a solution.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Thanks.

Hello, I use a HP laptop & since the last few days I am not able to open any files or click on something since the left (main) key & double tap on the mouse pad are not working! Although I am able to move the cursor/pointer over the touch pad & the right click is working fine as well! I searched the entire internet & nothing seem to work! Could anyone help me please ? The last thing I remember doing that might have caused this problem (earlier everything was working fine but sometimes touchpad used to get stuck) is hitting the fn+f5 button that I read in this thread Touchpad not working for windows 10. - Page 3 - Windows 10 Forums Thanks!

A:Left Click & double tap not working in windows 10!

Hi, can you check you don't have Clicklock on? (see Control Panel, Mouse). How does a wired mouse behave?

Look in Device Manager and check when your touchpad driver was last updated. Check it's not the date your problem started.
