I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Vista came in 2006 and Windows 10 in 2016.
Try Installing the Driver in compatiablity mode.Right click the Driver setup file and select properties>compatiablity>Run this in Windows vista.
50-50 chances that it should work.

Hello all,
Just bought a Brother mfc-5490cn and am having issues installing the software suite to print from a PC via an ethernet connection.

Every time I attempt to install it, towards the end of the installation while it is installing everything I get this error message.

An error occurred during the installation.
Please restart your PC, ensure all applications are closed
- Then reinstall "MFL-Pro Suite".

ISO34- InstallNetworkDriver - 1

When I hit the "Ok" button, the installer hangs and I have to end task it.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

I am running Win XP Pro service pack 3 using an admin account.

Thanks in advanced.

I would try installing it in Safe mode

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit version and the install of the Brother DCP 7065DN is causing me grief.

The copy and scan functions are operable, but not the printer function.

I am logged in as Administrator in Vista.

Printing a test page returns an "access is denied" message.

So I try to open as administrator and trying the Print test page, returns message "Printer not installed"

I have tried the XP compatibility mode as well as XP and Win7 printer drivers but no success.

I have had no problem installed the printer on another hard drive with Win 7

Brother says my Vista is corrupted and contact support.microsoft.com . How nice, Doing a web search, it seems that Brother definitely has compatibility issues with Vista judging on all the posts. Unfortunately I see few solutions.

Any takers out there?

Hi There,
I am having problems configuring my Brother MFC-7860DW printer on my home network.
I have connected the printer via ethernet to my home wireless router. I assumed it would pick up a DHCP address from my router but it didn't. When I ran a configuration page, it gave me a 169.x.x.x address. So I manually configured a static IP with the appropriate subnet mask and tried to print from my vista printer, however it failed to print. I tried to ping the printer with the assigned static IP and it said "destination host unreachable". I've re-set printer and turned it off/on and also rebooted the wireless router. Still same thing. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the printer itself? I also have tested the ethernet cable with a laptop and it is working. I even tried adding a static IP reservation in the web admin page of the wireless router.
I'm kinda stuck. Any ideas? Pls help.

Here I go again. I asked this before and the problem was solved. However I installed a new and upgraded mobo and cpu. The printer will not install now. For general safety I reinstalled W10 and all my programs. I downloaded and ran the Brother drivers setup.exe. All I get is "machine not found". This is so even though after running setup.exe the Brother mfc-j895dw printer appears in Devices and Printers each time I attempt the install though I remove that device each time. I even tried the previously failed cd install just in case but it still fails. Setup.exe runs and decompresses all the files into a folder Install which contains setup.exe. I deleted that folder and the driver download and tried running setup several times to no avail. I deleted the downloaded file, the Install folder, and the printer from Devices and Printers before attempting each reinstall. I disconnect the Brother from everything before starting setup and only reconnect it when installation says to reconnect. I also set the printer as the default printer each time to no avail.

I am running into a problem trying to install a Brother QL-800 label printer on a Dell Desktop running 64 Bit Windows 8.1 Professional. The driver installer was downloaded directly from the Brother website Support download page for that model. The installation procedure took a while and completed without any kind of failure or warnings.

The previously installed P-Touch labeling software could not find a compatible label printer and chose the Windows default networked laser printer as the output device. The QL-800 was powered up and connected by a USB cable to the computer before launching the P-Touch software. When I checked the Windows Devices & Printers control panel, the QL-800 was listed as a storage device under Devices instead of under Printers. I removed the device and ran the Brother cleanup utility to remove the drivers and then repeated the installation procedure with the same results.

The user had been using the P-Touch software with an older QL-550 label printer that was starting to have mechanical problems but otherwise was working OK with the P-Touch software. It was not connected to the computer when I removed it from the Windows printer list before I installed the QL-800 drivers. The software was able to immediately recognize and use the QL-550 when the USB cable was moved from the QL-800 to the QL-550.

What do I need to do to make the QL-800 install as a printer? I am leary of uninstalling the QL-550 drivers as the user does need to print labels on a r... Read more

Hi, I cannot re-install my brother printer HL2170W. I have seen here a post that had the link to the website for the latest drivers...went there and when i unzip the file there is no setup file or even an executable file that gets zipped. Am i missing something?

Prior to this, I ran the install of the latest drivers (I think) from the website for 64 bit vista. Then it went through the installation and completed but the printer does not show up on the control panel. So, that is why I tried to follow the instructions posted here.

With my Brother, running the downloaded installer finds the printer already on he network. Sets it up and install the drivers. Otherwise, W& will try to use it's geneic WSD, which is not bidirectional.
I did have a problem that I resolved by completely uninstalling and re-running the latest installer from Brother's website. Hope that helps.

Well I got a new printer for Christmas.
The Epson Stylus Photo R340
From the first day I went to install it. I have had issues.
It shows the drivers installing from the installation CD and the printer seems to work fine.
(I have printed CD/DVDs, and documents with no problems)
The problem is everytime I turn the computer on, or the printer off and then on again.
Windows says "Found new Hardware" and attempts to install the printer again.
I then get an "Installation failed, Access denied error"

I have attempted to uninstall and re-install the printer about 7 times.(re-reading the directions each time) and trying a new USB cable.
I even cleaned the registry with Crap Cleaner to be sure there was no old printer issues.

I then contacted Epson Tech Support, and they said this sounds like a microsoft issue.
Like the computer is'nt recognizing me as the administrator. I am the only user of this computer and have the admin. account.

I am running the following:

Windows XP SP2
2.08 ghz
1 gig RAM
120 gb harddrive w/ 53gb free
4.3 gb harddrive (recovery drive)

All my updates are done and I have had no other issues installing other things..
(2 DVD R/RW drives,Linksys wireless G router and an Epson 2480 scanner )

Hopefully someone has an idea, this is getting annoying.

I am currently using an Asus Transformer Book T100TA and I want to connect my Epson Stylus TX121/NX125 printer to it. This laptop does not have a CD drive for me to load the installation CD, so I went to Epson's portal and downloaded the Win8.1 32-bit prnter driver and utilities combo package. However when running the pack, the Winzip Self-Extractor shows a "system cannot find file specified" message and the execution is always aborted after that; this happens regardless of whether I connected my printer to the laptop via the USB cable or not so I have no idea how to get round this problem.

I have tried Windows troubleshooting my printer since it appears as an unknown device. The results say:
- EPSON Scanner has a driver problem
- USB Printing Support is not working properly

Just fyi, prior to this I haven't installed my printer on this asus laptop via any means. Would appreciate very much if someone can provide me with an answer.

A:Epson printer driver does not install

What is the error you get when you install the drivers. Check if the device install service is enabled under services.msc. It would be better if you could provide the setupapi.dev files here.
You can find the setupapi.dev.txt file under Inf folder. Just type inf in the run box and it should open up for you.

I have an Epson stylus photo R220 printer that I am having difficulty installing on a Compaq Presario computer running Windows XP. When I follow the installation instructions provided with the install CD, I keep getting the message "Error, the printer driver is unknown". I have tried to uninstall all other printers and their drivers, as well as AOL "Safety and Security" programming, as I read somewhere that this may conflict with the printer driver installation, but no success. I have spent countless hours with both Epson and HP Tech support personnel, but no success in resolving the problem. I was able to successfully install this same printer on a different computer running Windows XP (also with AOL installed on that computer), so know it is not a problem with the printer or the installation software. The Compaq Presario is only two years old, and has a 3.2 GHz celeron processer, so there should not be compatibility issues with the computer. Any help?

Hope this is the correct Forum for Printer questions.
Is it ?

Have a 5 yr old Brother printer (HL-2140) which uses a TN-360 ink Cartridge.

A Brother branded "high yield" TN-360 goes for about $ 50. Wow.

I see that Amazon carries several other non Brother, but supposedly compatible
TN-360 cartridges by mfg. names I've never heard of.

Much, much cheaper.
Am willing to try one, but am very uncertain which of the brands to go with.

Anyone have any experience with non Brother labeled "compatible" cartridges ?
Any good ?
Which Brand should I try, perhaps ?

Note: It's almost worth buying a brand new Brother printer instead !

Thought on ?

A:Brother Printer and Non-Brother Branded Ink Cartridges ?

Hi, again:

You will likely find that the answer to this question falls into 2 major camps:
Only use OEM, branded ink from the printer manufacturer (or a trusted, high-volume, reputable seller), OR
It's perfectly fine to use knockoff, refurb, non-branded
I don't know anything about Brother, as I have been using HP printers/all-in-ones since the days of the printing press.

No matter which brand, in the printer industry, the ink/toner is how the manufacturer makes its money, not on the hardware.

There are many factors in the risk:benefit calculation, such as budget, volume of printing needs, need for optimal performance, etc.

My own personal experience for relatively heavy home/home office use is that it is not worth skimping on the cost of discounted ink/toner.
There can be serious quality issues with the cheap stuff (even branded, refurbished ones).
And there can be quality issues even when buying "new" OEM ink/toner from 3rd-party sites or even brick and mortar big box stores (the items may be legit, but they are stale).
If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
HP has a terrific ink/toner program -- 2 or 3 mouse clicks and I have the products on my doorstep 1 or 2 business days later, with free shipping. The price is highly competitive, and the ink/toner is always fresh and high-quality. This works very well for me.

Your mileage may vary, of course....
Cheers, MM

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

I got a Brother printer on a free site but it initially had error "unable to Clean". I've fixed that only to get Error 46. Now it has "Unable to Initialize". It's been a waste of my time to get help from Brother so I advise anyone to not purchase their lousy machines. Somehow I think if I got the codes to reset the factory settings this thing would be fixed. Brother refuses to give me the codes to reset my machine. Please God if there is anyone that can help me fix this problem I would be ever so grateful ! Thanks !

A:Brother MFC3240C Printer error "Unable to Initialize"."

"If it says free, it must mean the headache that accompanies it, Right?" rbm081475, if you have Windows XP and reinstalled, you have overwritten your previous profile. Google "Drivers Brother MFC3240C" and it should take you to the drivers download site, or at least another friendly site to do the same.

Check your Printers and Faxs to see if you have anything such as "XPS Printer" or Fax" "Document Printer"...etc. In other words, sometimes a Faux printer (printers or Faxs created by some software) will give false errors as they are attempting to acces these same little buggers.

Try deleting the printer and reloading. Disconnect from your PC, removed form Control Panel or Printers and Faxs.

Win7 OS on Dell4550

Have a HP2500L color laser installed on USB001 virtual port and running fine. I cannot add another USB printer (Canon S900) without Win7 deleting the HP or apparently overwriting it's driver. When the hp has been deleted, the Canon S900 printer test is printed on the HP printer but only prints one line of misc. characters on each page.

When I get the S900 installed the icon for the HP disappears from the Devices and printer window and the S900 appears but when selected the print the job goes to the HP printer.

Is it possible to have two usb printers installed in Win 7? If so how is it done?

A:Unable to install 2nd USB Printer

Try this:

Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Devices and Printers and right click to select add a printer. I hope this helps.

I cannot get my printer to install on my system, since I refreshed the system from about a week ago. It keeps saying "The Printer Installation Failed".

Can someone please assist me on getting this issue fixed?

A:Unable to Install Printer

You don't tell us which make and model printer you are using -- but my experience with HP printers doing this has required removing all trace of the previous HP software and the printer drivers, rebooting the machine, and then rerunning the HP-specific printer installer again. That usually requires that you do NOT reconnect the printer to the PC until you are prompted to do so. IF you try reinstalling with the printer already connect, it often will not work.

I have an Acer 5741 with Windows 10. Back when I had Windows 7, I was able to use my HP Deskjet F4580 without problem. However, when I try to install the printer, it always fails. I have tried using the driver installer from HP website (which fails in one of the steps after plugging in the printer USB cable) and also just plugging the printer to the computer to see if Windows was able to solve the issue (control panel --> devices and printers --> the detected printer --> solve problems of bad driver).

I don't know what to do anymore. Strangely, in another laptop with Windows 10 this printer works fine. So I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Thanks in advance!

Connect it as a network printer andclick "printer I want is not listed",then put in the ip address of the printer (under "select a shared printer by name")you can find on the router screen. You will also have to install the driver int the Vista pc as well at some point.

I have tried to install HP2840 software, and cannot complete install. I get message saying I need admin rights. I checked, Start>>Run>>control userpasswords2 >> OK, and under Properties and I have admin rights. In fact I am the only user of the computer. I was told by HP that I might need to debug the user accounts. Any suggestions would be helpful as this is for a business computer and my "tech" guy has no answers for me.

I have shared a printer on Windows 7 and in the security tab I gave "Everyone" access rights. I still get the error message - I keep getting the error message ?Windows cannot connect to the printer????.
I was able to shared directories and able to access them without any problems. It's the darn printer that I can't connect.
It's part of my assignment to test the printer to see if I can install the driver via point and print to a shared printer on Windows 7. Someone told me it's a Windows 7 security issue.
On both another Windows XP and another Windows 7 PC able to to connect to a second Windows 7 PC and see the printer, but it won't let me connect to it. Any ideas how to resolve it.
Is it because one pc is on a domain while the other is in a workgroup? If so why am I able to access shared folder, but cannot connect to a shared printer.

I have an epson CX5800f printer. Recently, it stopped responding to printing commands. The printer spooler frequently shut itself off. Since then, I have uninstalled my drivers for the printer. However, now when I try installing any drivers, I get messages saying installation has failed.

I have checked to see if the printer itself is unable to print, and I have found that it still can. Maybe parts of the old driver are still in my computer?

Thanks for any help

A:Unable To Install Printer Software

Right click on "my computer" and click on "properties"
click on the "hardware" tab, then click on "device manager"

locate the printer, then rightclick on it and choose "uninstall".

Once the printer itself is gone, then go and uninstall the drivers

to do this:
Click start > settings > printers and faxes > file > server properties > drivers

locate the drivers you wish to uninstall (all of them if you don't have any other printers or programs that use print drivers) and click "remove".

Then reboot your computer and start from scratch.

I just re installed windows 8.1 on my new SSD and all went fine except that I just can’t re install my Epson wireless NX230 printer. When I bought 6 months ago my Asus K750J laptop never had a problem installing the printer.

The installation program from the DVD says it encountered a problem and I must reboot which I do and the same message repeats. The network light on the printer is ON which indicates that the printer is connected to my network but I’m missing the driver

I downloaded the driver from Epson and I get the same problem

Any ideas where to look for?

Help please.
I've tried unsuccessfully to install my Epson R200 (USB) printer on to my laptop. I used the disc that came with the printer to install the drivers and then tried to install the printer. I tried over and over again to install the printer and each time I kept getting a message to say that it was unable to complete the installation. The R200 was showing in my printer & faxes folder on each occasion. I then downloaded drivers from the Epson website...still no luck.
After that I tried to install my HP printer - same thing happened.
I then tried to install another piece of hardware - a USB multi-card reader. Still no luck.
Can anyone help?

Hello All, Haven't been to TechSupport Forum for a long time, and everything seems different now, it feels like an entirely new website. Any how here is my question:

Trying to setup two network printers at office on a Laptop running Vista. And it has been giving me quite a difficult time, and hoping some old friends here could help out.

OS: Vista SP1
Printers: Toshiba E2550C, Toshiba E655
Setup: all devices are connected to a switch, then router, then to a DSL modem.

Method used to install printers:
1. add local printer
2. create a TCPIP port
3. enter local address of Printer
4. Then things went south.

The address is suppose to be, but Windows automatically added a "_1" (see below image) to the end of the address. So even if I follow through the installation wizard, print jobs will not be directed to the correct device. The same goes for the other printer.

Just curious why Vista would add the "_1" to the address. At first, I thought the port is being occupied by another process. Then I used netstat to check for all ports, and no service is running on the same address.

I am desperate. And this matter is like a needle in my thumb, going crazy if don't resolve this soon.

A:Vista unable to install printer driver

I have always used the "Find Printer" option and let the computer do the work. If you have no printers installed (or uninstall what you have), then from a program like Word, select print and when prompted, or when the appropriate button appears, say "Yes, I'd like to find a printer on the network", then the printer will either self-install, or at the right moment prompt for the insertion of a driver disc. I have always found this the most reliable way of getting the right bits of the printer software in the right place.

Go through the entire download and install process. It get to choosing between installing for a single printer or network printer. After I choose either one, nothing happens.

Tried a XP reload but still did not work.
